Peninsula Dental School

This paper reports on the recent activity of the pan-European consensus of the ADEE Special Interest Group for Pre-Clinical Operative Skills. Following the previous recommendations from the group, and in order to support teachers and to harmonise the delivery of skills training across Europe, a more formal curriculum relating to pre-clinical operative skills needs to be created. This paper reports European consensus surrounding the categorisation (level of importance, and difficulty) of basic operative dental clinical skills within the undergraduate curriculum and provides recommendations relating to session structure and timing of curricular elements for basic operative dental clinical skills teaching.

Oil Boom, Exchange Rate And Sectoral Output: An Empirical Analysis Of Dutch Disease In Oil-Rich Countries, Marwan Alssadek, James Benhin

Plymouth Business School

This paper examines the Dutch disease in a global sample of 36 oil-rich developed and developing countries for the period 1970 to 2016. It also examines the theory comprehensively by considering the two Dutch disease intermediate effects: spending and resource movement. Using panel data fixed effect with Driscoll-Kraay standard errors estimation approach, our results show that an oil boom causes appreciation in the real exchange rate and a fall in sectoral output, which is consistent with the theory. However, there is significant difference in the effects of oil boom on the real exchange rate and sectoral output among sub-regional groupings, …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Background: Existing research on the costs associated for design and deploying eLearning in health professions education is limited. The way in which these learning platforms compare in cost to face-to-face learning is also not well understood. The lack of pre-defined costing models used for eLearning cost data capture has made it difficult to complete cost evaluation. Objective: The key aim of this scoping review is to explore the state of evidence concerning cost capture within eLearning in health professions education. The review explores what data exists to define cost calculations related to eLearning. Methods: Scoping review using a search strategy …

Preconception And Diabetes Information (Padi) App For Women With Pregestational Diabetes: A Feasibility And Acceptability Study, Chidiebere H. Nwolise, Nicola Carey, Jill Shawe

School of Nursing and Midwifery

AbstractDiabetes mellitus increases the risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Preconception care is vital to minimise complications; however, preconception care service provision is hindered by inadequate knowledge, resources and care fragmentation. Mobile health technology, particularly smartphone apps, could improve preconception care and pregnancy outcomes for women with diabetes. The aim of this study is to co-create a preconception and diabetes information app with healthcare professionals and women with diabetes and explore the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effects of the app. A mixed-methods study design employing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews was used to assess preliminary outcome estimates (preconception care knowledge, …

Where Are The Children? An Autoethnography Of Deception In Dementia In An Acute Hospital, G Hodge Jan 2021

Where Are The Children? An Autoethnography Of Deception In Dementia In An Acute Hospital, G Hodge

School of Nursing and Midwifery

An acute hospital environment is a confusing place for many patients requiring admission, especially when they are presenting as acutely unwell. This can be particularly difficult for people living with dementia. As cognition changes it is not uncommon for people living with dementia to have difficulties with their ability to orientate to time, place and person. These disorientating moments can lead to personal distress, and at times behavioural changes. As well as being distressing for the person living with dementia, it can also be emotionally and ethically challenging for acute hospital staff; including nurses. One area found to be particularly …

Behaviour Change Approaches For Individuals With Diabetes To Improve Foot Self-Management: A Scoping Review, Joanne Paton, Sally Abey, Phil Hendy, Jennifer Williams, Richard Collings, Lynne Callaghan

School of Health Professions

Abstract Background Diabetes related foot complications are increasing in complexity, frequency and cost. The application of self-management strategies can reduce the risk of individuals developing foot complications. The type, range and nature of the literature focusing on interventions that support patients with diabetic foot self-management is unknown. This scoping review aimed to i) identify self-management actions and risky behaviour avoidance strategies within interventions, ii) map the theoretical functions through which these behaviour change interventions have an effect, iii) display gaps in the research. Methodology Arksey and Malley’s (2003) 5 stage framework was followed to conduct the scoping study. This methodological …

The Effect Of Response Biases On Resolution Thresholds Of Sloan Letters In Central And Paracentral Vision, Hatem Barhoom, Mahesh R. Joshi, Gunnar Schmidtmann

School of Health Professions

Sloan letters are one of the most commonly used optotypes in clinical practice. Sloan letters have different relative legibility which could be due to three factors: perceivability, response bias, and similarity. Similarities between Sloan letters are known to be the major source of errors in threshold determination. However, little is known about the effect of response biases on the resolution thresholds. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of response bias and similarity on resolution thresholds of Sloan letters in central and paracentral vision.Eight subjects with normal ocular health participated in this study. Using the method …

Quantifying The Release Of Tyre Wear Particles To The Marine Environment Via Multiple Pathways, Florence N.F. Parker-Jurd, Imogen E. Napper, Geoffrey D. Abbott, Simon Hann, Richard C. Thompson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Desk-based studies have suggested tyre wear particles contribute a substantial portion of microplastic emissions to the environment, yet few empirical studies report finding tyre wear. Samples were collected from three pathways to the marine environment: atmospheric deposition, treated wastewater effluent, and untreated surface runoff. Pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry was used to detect benzothiazole, a molecular marker for tyres. Benzothiazole was detected in each pathway, emitting tyre wear in addition to other sources of microplastics. Release via surface water drainage was the principle pathway in the regions examined. Laboratory tests indicated larger particles likely settle close to their entry …

Wave Modulation Of Flows On Open And Closed Reefs, M Lindhart, Js Rogers, Sa Maticka, Cb Woodson, Sg Monismith Jan 2021

Wave Modulation Of Flows On Open And Closed Reefs, M Lindhart, Js Rogers, Sa Maticka, Cb Woodson, Sg Monismith

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Using observations, numerical models, and theory, we explore a framework to classify reefs as open or closed based on their dynamics. While the concepts of open and closed reefs are used widely in studies of coral reef hydrodynamics and are generally based on geometry, there is no consensus on what qualifies as open and closed. With observations from Ofu, American Samoa, we show that the reef flat exhibits two different dynamical regimes depending on tidal and wave forcing. Flow over this reef flat resembles a classic one‐dimensional barrier reef flow during low tide, where wave setup creates a cross‐reef pressure …

How Consistent Are Estimates Of Roughness Parameters On A Rough Coral Reef?, M Lindhart, Sg Monismith, A Khrizman, D Mucciarone, R Dunbar

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Coral reefs are hydrodynamically rough, creating turbulent boundary layers that transport and mix various scalars that impact reef processes and also can be used to monitor reef health. Often reef boundary layer characteristics derived from a single instrument are assumed to accurately represent the study site. This approach relies on two assumptions: first, that the boundary layer is relatively homogeneous across the area of interest, and second, that two instruments displaced in space or with different spatiotemporal resolution would produce similar results when sampling the same flow. We deployed four velocimeters over a 15 × 20 m reef at 10 …

Situational Judgment Tests: From Low-Fidelity Simulations To Alternative Measures Of Personality And The Person-Situation Interplay, Filip Lievens, Philipp Schäpers, Christoph N. Herde

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In employment and education settings, Situational Judgment Tests (SJTs) have made strong inroads. So far, however, they are still underutilized in personality research. The objective of this chapter is to outline how SJTs might be adapted to measure personality traits, shed light onto the person-situation interplay, and stimulate research on it. We start by discussing the traditional simulation-based view on SJTs, including information on their development and research results. Next, we show how more recent versions have started to assess people’s knowledge of relevant behavior related to personality traits. Finally, we specify various strategies as to how SJTs might be …
