In “Judicialization of the Sea: Bargaining in the Shadow of UNCLOS,” Sara Mitchell and Andrew Owsiak make an important contribution to the literature that considers if and how international courts influence the behavior of states beyond the process of adjudication. Their analysis shows that states that declare an Article 287 choice for dispute resolution when signing the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) are more likely to solve their conflicts in peaceful ways, compared to signatories who do not, suggesting this relationship is not epiphenomenal. Their finding provides us with yet another piece of the puzzle in …

Political Skill: A Servant-Leadership Complementary, Peter Mulinge
Political Skill: A Servant-Leadership Complementary, Peter Mulinge
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The constructs of political skill and servant-leadership may be thought of as paths to influence. Nevertheless, out of curiosity, one might enthusiastically ask whether political skill and servantleadership are two faces of the same coin serving a similar purpose. While one may argue that political skill is an astute skill that leaders employ to influence people to gain political mileage, in some sense, this is a potent argument because leaders do not nominate, elect or put themselves into positions of leadership.
Servant-Leadership For Social And Environmental Justice, Jeff Vanek
Servant-Leadership For Social And Environmental Justice, Jeff Vanek
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Whether we are talking social or environmental justice, we are talking about people issues. Humanity and nature are inseparably intertwined, and servant-leadership is the perfect leadership style needed to address the challenges our planet faces. The term servant-leader, as used today, was coined by Robert Greenleaf in his 1970 essay The Servant as Leader

Motivational Interviewing: A Tool For Servant-Leadership, Jemima Neddy Organ
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
In this essay I hope to interest the servant-leadership (SL) community in the well-developed communication style known as motivational interviewing (MI) (Miller, 1983; Miller & Rollnick, 2013), which bears similarities to a SL style of guiding and leading namely: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to growth, and building community. Furthermore, there is extensive scientific literature bearing on the nature and efficacy of MI in facilitating human growth and change, which could describe SL in practical terms that can be taught, measured, and studied.

My Fortuitous Encounters: A Law & People Who Listened, Bobbette Brown-Vandenberg
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
My career in educational and athletic settings has spanned over four decades. I believe my vocational calling was serendipitously sparked and subsequently nurtured through many fortuitous encounters over a lifetime. Coined by Mr. D. J. De Pree in the 1920’s, fortuitous encounters are “evidence of the hand of God” (Davis & Spears, 2013, p. xiii) in our lives. Davis and Spears (2013) further described these encounters as “moments where a person, place, or thing causes our lives to change in a more positive direction” (p. 1). In this essay, I will describe persons, a place, and legislation (a thing) that …

Reflections On The Origins Of Robert K. Greenleaf’S Five Books, Larry C. Spears
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
In July, my wife Beth gave birth to our second son, Matthew, who joined his big brother, James. Born on July 14, I soon learned that Matthew actually shared a birthday with Bob Greenleaf, who had been born in Terre Haute, Indiana on July 14, 1904. In September, I had my one-and-only face-to-face meeting with Robert Greenleaf—the subject of another story that I have shared in several places, most notably in Fortuitous Encounters: Wisdom Stories for Learning and Growth (Paul Davis and Larry C. Spears, Editors: Paulist Press, 2013). Ten days later, Robert Greenleaf passed away at the age of …
Cultivating Volunteer Leaders In The Fertile Climate Of Servant-Leadership, Michael T. Von Behren
Cultivating Volunteer Leaders In The Fertile Climate Of Servant-Leadership, Michael T. Von Behren
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
A blossoming field of interest in public life, corporate endeavor, and academic inquiry is the cultivation of leadership. Peter Northouse (2019) began his seminal review of scholarly leadership study saying, “People continue to ask themselves and others what makes good leaders” (p. 1). As I take in his work on the landscape of leadership theory a popular folk tune plays in my mind: “Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow. All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground” (Mallett, 1997). The variety of theoretical models identified by Northouse present …

Interruptive Symbology: Servant-Leadership From Micro-Observation To Macro-Movement, Anne M. “Marnie” Rorholm
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
In the summer of 2020, against a backdrop of a global pandemic, a U.S. presidential election and the zenith of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, a hermeneutic phenomenological research study was conducted to establish the legitimacy and help define the theory of interruptive symbology. Despite the civil unrest in America, this was a serendipitous time for this type of research, as the mainstream and social media was rife with disruptive images.
Spirituality Revisited: Heeding Greenleaf’S Call For The Spirituality Of Leadership, Cheryl Broetje
Spirituality Revisited: Heeding Greenleaf’S Call For The Spirituality Of Leadership, Cheryl Broetje
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
Many people are called to a vision for a more loving, more just society, but they are unprepared to hear it. As such, most calls go unclaimed. In Proverbs 29:18 we read “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” It is a deeply spiritual work to listen deeply enough to hear a vision, let alone trust it, while awaiting God’s timing for the vision to be born into the world. A birth of call in our lives takes a community of support, just as the birth of any baby. In our role as family, friends and neighbors, we help …

Nurse Practitioners’ Knowledge And Perceptions Regarding Substance Use, Audrey Bailey, Paden Dawkins, Amber Hankins, Erin Mckinney
MSN Research Projects
Substance use disorder (SUD) is an illness impacting many people today and continues to not be truly understood, even by providers. To gain a greater understanding of this issue in relation to nurse practitioners, the researchers surveyed nurse practitioners in the Southeastern United States. The goal of the study was to identify knowledge and perceptions of nurse practitioners regarding substance use and misuse. Watson’s Theory of Caring was used to guide the study. The research questions that guided this study were 1. Do nurse practitioners have a bias toward patients with substance use disorder, and 2. Do nurse practitioners believe …

A One-Session, Brief Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Workshop For Chronic Pain Patients: A One-Sample Pretest-Posttest Prospective Exploratory Study, Kelly Anne Thomas Ms
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chronic pain affects one in every four persons (NIH, 2010). For individuals residing in rural communities where chronic pain treatment is often not accessible (Artnak et al., 2011), a one-session brief mental health intervention is a critical healthcare need. More specifically, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for chronic pain is a novel treatment approach in need of more research (Society of Clinical Psychology, 2016). This current study contributes to the gap in the literature by implementing an ACT workshop in a rural healthcare setting for individuals with chronic pain. It was hypothesized that the workshop would increase adaptive coping mechanisms …

52 Life Changing Devotional Thoughts: Spiritual Food For The Journey, Trevor O'Reggio
Faculty Publications
Over the last twenty years that I have worked as a professor of Church History at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, Andrews University, I have given a short devotion to my students at the beginning of each class period to inspire and encourage them in their faith journey and to affirm them in their call to ministry. I have gathered up these precious devotional thoughts and put them in this small book, so there will be a permanent record of these spiritual reflections. Enclosed you will find short scriptural reflections, homilies, inspirational poems, bible readings, and common-sense instructions. I hope …

Previous research suggests that patterns of ongoing thought are heterogeneous, varying across situations and individuals. The current study investigated the influence of multiple tasks and affective style on ongoing patterns of thought. We used 9 different tasks and measured ongoing thought using multidimensional experience sampling. A Principal Component Analysis of the experience sampling data revealed four patterns of ongoing thought: episodic social cognition, unpleasant intrusive, concentration and self focus. Linear Mixed Modelling was used to conduct a series of exploratory analyses aimed at examining contextual distributions of these thought patterns. We found that different task contexts reliably evoke different thought …

Illegal Waste Exports: Misdescription At Point Of Export, J Lowther
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Hazardous waste exports are, rightly, the subject of a significant and complex legal regime operating at levels from international through to domestic law. A murky history of developed countries exporting waste to their less developed counterparts prompted the development and agreement of the Basel Convention on Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.1 This Convention has a broad constituency for an international environmental law instrument, having almost universal membership.2 Amendments and protocols to enhance the basic obligations in the Convention have been adopted, including the Liability Protocol and the Basel Ban amendment, which applies in the main …

‘From Lone-Sailor To Fleet’: Supporting Educators Through Wild Pedagogies, Lewis Winks, Paul Warwick
Plymouth Institute of Education
Enabling educators to meet new and challenging times requires fundamental shifts to ways of imagining and enacting their practice. A central yet often understated aspect of this educational change are the various ways in which educators receive training and development. From initial teacher training through to continuing professional development, cultures which underpin policy change in educational institutions emerge from the practices of educators. In this paper we examine educators’ experiences of a Wild Pedagogies gathering which took place over three days in central Devon in late spring 2019. Part workshop, part informal social gathering and mutual exchange, this continuing professional …

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. …

Introduction: Dental therapists have a key role to play in the provision of dentistry in the UK. The Dental Workforce Advisory Group has reported this is relevant in multiple areas, including prevention and care in young children, and to support dentists in providing advanced and routine treatment for complex adult patients within the wider collaborative dental team. There remain diverse and multiple barriers and challenges to utilising the optimal scope of the dental therapist in general practice. In 2013, the General Dental Council introduced direct access (DA) legislation in the UK. By utilising the potential of dental therapists, some of …
