Ecologically-relevant factors such as exercise and diet quality can directly influence how physiological systems work including those involved in maintaining oxidative balance; however, to our knowledge, no studies to date have focused on how such factors directly affect expression of key components of the endogenous antioxidant system (i.e., transcription factors, select antioxidant genes, and corresponding antioxidant enzymes) in several metabolically active tissues of a migratory songbird. We conducted a 3-factor experiment that tested the following hypotheses: (H1) Daily flying over several weeks increases the expression of transcription factors NRF2 and PPARs as well as endogenous antioxidant genes (i.e., CAT, SOD1, …
Law's Ability To Further The "Menstrual Movement", Christopher A. Cotropia
Law's Ability To Further The "Menstrual Movement", Christopher A. Cotropia
Law Faculty Publications
"The current menstrual movement calls for overcoming the cultural stigma associated with menstruation, achieving “menstrual equity,” and ending “period poverty.” The stigma the movement seeks to address is that menstruation is seen as taboo, unclean, and impure. The movement’s aims are twofold: First, it wants to increase awareness of menstruation and remove discrimination against those who menstruate, thus achieving menstrual equity. Second, it intends to provide greater access to menstrual hygiene products (“MHPs”), particularly for homeless and lower income people, thus eliminating period poverty. To achieve these goals, the movement is advocating to legislatively eliminate the “tampon tax” and increase …

Parking Problems And Policies In Bangkok: Issues, Causes, And Implications, Chakaphan Chullabodhi
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Parking policies are integral to promoting sustainable urban mobility and enhancing a city's livability as they can shift people's movement toward more sustainable modes. However, Bangkok still lacks a concrete parking policy. The existing one consists primarily of regulations and standards that help reduce traffic congestion, albeit without well-defined policy objectives. This study examines the current problems of on-street and off-street parking policies, investigates the root causes of parking issues, and establishes a parking policy that supports the city's development of sustainable mobility. We used a modified conceptual framework comprising the Iceberg Model of analysis and the Political Economics Analysis …

An Sdn-Coordinated Multipath Transmission Steering Framework, Kiattikun Kawila
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Data transfer is a primary mechanism that can directly affect the overall performance of Big Data analytic systems. This is because most data are generated from several locations. It has been challenging to collect and transfer data among multiple storage regions. Using the traditional single-path transfer approaches is not efficient to serve several requirements of Big Data applications. In this dissertation, we propose an SDN-coordinated multipath transmission steering framework for Big Data transfer application. Multipath TCP protocol (MPTCP) and SDN architecture are mainly considered to design and develop our multipath transmission framework. To provide a practical routing solution, we propose …

Assessment Of Physicochemical Properties, Nutritional Values, And Sensory Acceptability Of Pigeon Pea Flour Substitution In Chapati Flat Bread, Sirin Sachanarula
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In recent years, an interest in plant–based protein increased dramatically. Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) is recognized as a good source of plant protein. The current study was aimed to develop pigeon pea flour (PPF) and whole wheat flour (WWF) blends, which were then used to make chapatis. The substitution levels of PPF for WWF ranged from 10%–40% w/w. The physical properties and nutritional values of the flour blends and the chapatis were investigated. The chapatis were also evaluated for sensory acceptability. Proximate analysis of the flours revealed protein content in PPF (26.10%) two times higher than that in WWF (13.52%). …

The Association Of Reproductive Factors And Exogenous Hormone Use With Distal Sensory Neuropathy Among The Us Postmenopausal Women: Results From 1999–2004 Nhanes, Jiayu Li
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Background: Distal sensory neuropathy is a common disorder in the peripheral nervous system. We aimed to investigate the association between reproductive history factors and distal sensory neuropathy among the US postmenopausal women aged 40 years and over. We also explored the heterogeneity of these associations by age. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted with data from postmenopausal women aged 40 years and over in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004. Women with diabetes, stroke, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, thyroid disease, liver disease, weak/failing kidneys, or amputation were excluded. Distal sensory neuropathy was measured via 10-gram monofilament test and all …

Ocular Surface Microbiome In Diabetes Mellitus, Orathai Suwajanakorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This cross-sectional, age and gender matched study included 20 eyes of non-diabetic subjects (non-DM group) and 60 eyes of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM group). Subgroups of DM were classified by diabetic retinopathy (DR) staging into no DR (DM-no DR), non-proliferative DR (DM-NPDR), proliferative DR (DM-PDR), and by glycemic control (well-controlled DM; HbA1c<7%, poorly-controlled DM; HbA1c≥7%). Conjunctival swabs were performed for ocular surface microbiome analysis using conventional culture and next-generation sequencing analysis (NGS). A higher culture-positive rate was found in DM (15%) than in non-DM group (5%) (pvalue=0.437). Antibiotic-resistant organisms were only detected in the DR groups (DM-NPDR and DM-PDR). The NGS analysis showed that potentially pathogenic bacteria predominated in DM, especially in DR. There was dissimilarity in the ocular surface microbiome between DM and non-DM groups. The subgroup analysis showed that the DR group had significantly different microbial community from DM-no DR and non-DM groups (p-value<0.05). The microbial community in the poorly-controlled DM was also significantly different from well-controlled DM and non-DM groups (p<0.001). Using the NGS method, this study is the first to signify the importance of DR and glycemic control status, which affect the changes in the ocular surface microbiome.
