Good Enough For Governance? Audit And Marine Biodiversity Offsetting In Australia, Holly J. Niner, Samuel Randalls Jan 2021

Good Enough For Governance? Audit And Marine Biodiversity Offsetting In Australia, Holly J. Niner, Samuel Randalls

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Biodiversity offsetting is often presented as a way to manage competing demands of environmental protection and economic development. It is premised on the transparent demonstration of how aims of no net loss of biodiversity (NNL) or similar are met in practice. This is complicated in marine systems where ecological predictions are commonly highly uncertain, knowledge of ecological restoration is low and administrative governance is complex. Drawing on a case study of marine biodiversity offsetting in Australia, this paper shows how these uncertainties pose practical challenges for both producers and consumers of marine biodiversity offsets, needing to progress with decision-making while …

Quantifying The Release Of Tyre Wear Particles To The Marine Environment Via Multiple Pathways, Florence N.F. Parker-Jurd, Imogen E. Napper, Geoffrey D. Abbott, Simon Hann, Richard C. Thompson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Desk-based studies have suggested tyre wear particles contribute a substantial portion of microplastic emissions to the environment, yet few empirical studies report finding tyre wear. Samples were collected from three pathways to the marine environment: atmospheric deposition, treated wastewater effluent, and untreated surface runoff. Pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry was used to detect benzothiazole, a molecular marker for tyres. Benzothiazole was detected in each pathway, emitting tyre wear in addition to other sources of microplastics. Release via surface water drainage was the principle pathway in the regions examined. Laboratory tests indicated larger particles likely settle close to their entry …

Behaviour Change Practices In Exercise Referral Schemes: Developing Realist Programme Theory Of Implementation, John Downey, Katie Shearn, Nicola Brown, Ross Wadey, Jeff Breckon

School of Nursing and Midwifery

BackgroundExercise Referral Schemes have been delivered worldwide in developed countries to augment physical activity levels in sedentary patients with a range of health issues, despite their utility being questioned. Understanding the implementation mechanisms of behaviour change practices is important to avoid inappropriate decommissioning and support future service planning. The aim of this study was to develop initial theories to understand what influences the behaviour change practices of Exercise Referral practitioners within the United Kingdom.MethodsAn eight-month focused ethnography was undertaken, to carry out the first phase of a realist evaluation, which included participant observation, interviews, document analysis, and reflexive journaling. A …

Complex Relationships Between Water Discharge And Sediment Concentration Across The Loess Plateau, China, Haiyan Zheng, Chiyuan Miao, Juying Jiao, Alistair G.L. Borthwick

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Understanding of the relationship between water discharge (Q) and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) across the Loess Plateau is a prerequisite for evaluating different soil and water conservation measures. Using daily Q and SSC datasets, this study jointly analyzes changes in Q and SSC on the central Loess Plateau, a major sediment-producing area of China, during the periods 1971-1987 (P1) and 2008-2016 (P2). The results show that during both P1 and P2, the contributions of maximum-3-day-per-year sediment load (SSL) to the total SSL are almost invariably over 50% (dominant), with the majority increasing further between P1 and P2. The contribution of …

Global Syndromes Induced By Changes In Solutes Of The World’S Large Rivers, Jiang Wu, Nan Xu, Yichu Wang, Wei Zhang, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Jinren Ni

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

AbstractSolute-induced river syndromes have grown in intensity in recent years. Here we investigate seven such river syndromes (salinization, mineralization, desalinization, acidification, alkalization, hardening, and softening) associated with global trends in major solutes (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, SO42−, Cl−, HCO3−) and dissolved silica in the world’s large rivers (basin areas ≥ 1000 km2). A comprehensive dataset from 600 gauge stations in 149 large rivers reveals nine binary patterns of co-varying trends in runoff and solute concentration. Solute-induced river syndromes are associated with remarkable increases in total dissolved solids (68%), chloride (81%), sodium (86%) and sulfate (142%) fluxes from rivers to oceans …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

MARINE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES The global ocean and its marine resources play an important role in the livelihoods, food and general wellbeing of humanity. This is especially relevant to the coastal communities in Southeast Asia where almost all the countries have extensive coastlines and a long and rich history of marine-related activities that are key contributors to their economies, social structures and human health. The Southeast Asian seas link the Pacific and Indian Oceans and are characterised by high diversity habitats including coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows, favoured by the tropical climate and heavy precipitation that transports nutrients to the …

Background: A quarter of people with intellectual disability (ID) have epilepsy, compared to approximately one in a hundred across the general population. Evidence for the safe and effective prescribing of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) for those with ID is, however, limited. Aims of Study: This study seeks to strengthen the research evidence around Eslicarbazepine Acetate (ESL), a new AED, by comparing response of individuals with ID to those from the general population who do not have ID. Methods: A single data set was created through retrospective data collection from English and Welsh NHS Trusts. The UK-based Epilepsy Database Research Register (Ep-ID) …

Moving Towards More Sustainable Aquaculture Practices: A Meta‐Analysis On The Potential Of Plant‐Enriched Diets To Improve Fish Growth, Immunity And Disease Resistance, Miriam Reverter, N Tapissier‐Bontemps, Samira Sarter, Pierre Sasal, Domenico Caruso Jan 2021

Moving Towards More Sustainable Aquaculture Practices: A Meta‐Analysis On The Potential Of Plant‐Enriched Diets To Improve Fish Growth, Immunity And Disease Resistance, Miriam Reverter, N Tapissier‐Bontemps, Samira Sarter, Pierre Sasal, Domenico Caruso

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractAquatic animal diseases are one of the major limiting factors in aquaculture development, with disease emergence forecast to increase with global change. However, in order to treat increasing diseases in a context of global emergence of antimicrobial resistance and strengthening regulations on antimicrobial use, sustainable alternatives are urgently needed. The use of plant supplements to increase fish immunity and disease resistance has gained much popularity within the last decades. The use of functional supplements, such as plants, can also improve growth and feed assimilation, contributing to a better optimization of aquaculture resources (e.g. fish meal inclusion). We conducted a systematic …

Effect Of Servant Leadership On Job Satisfaction In Nigerian Mortgage Banks, Adedayo Aderemi Olatunbode Jan 2021

Effect Of Servant Leadership On Job Satisfaction In Nigerian Mortgage Banks, Adedayo Aderemi Olatunbode

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractSeveral researchers examined the relationship between servant leadership and job satisfaction in organizations and reported a significant positive correlation between the two variables. However, the generalizability of these results was limited because 97% of the studies were conducted in the West and China, and none were conducted in Nigeria or in mortgage banks. The purpose of this nonexperimental, quantitative, correlational study was to examine the relationship between servant leadership and job satisfaction in a high-power distance culture, specifically in the mortgage bank industry in Nigeria. The theoretical frameworks were the leader-member exchange theory and motivation-hygiene theory. The research questions addressed …

Barriers In Implementing A Unified Collaborative Policy To Combat Female Sex Trafficking In Edo-State,Nigeria., Grace Chikaodili Uzochukwu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractHuman trafficking has been a historical and global concern as well as a global crime against humanity that violates individual rights, freedom, and privileges. Human trafficking has become a growing phenomenon in Edo State, Nigeria, while the existing policy to combat it has proved ineffective. There was a gap in understanding strategies for the unification of the policies at the level of Edo State, Nigeria, and the level of the United Nations (UN) to ensure better outcomes in the fight against human trafficking. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore perceived barriers to implementing collaborative policy unification …
