Job Satisfaction And Retention Among Direct Care Workers In Times Of Covid-19, Emma Boone
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractLow employee satisfaction and retention have been identified as major challenges in the American mental health workforce. High turnover rates and the growing demand for direct care workers necessitates further research regarding satisfaction and retention. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to determine how direct care workers employed by mental health organizations describe what motivates their satisfaction and retention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Herzberg’s theory of job satisfaction was the theoretical framework. Research questions explored job satisfaction and retention among a group of 8 direct care workers. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect participants’ perceptions of their work …

Exploring Ethnic And New Orleans Cultural Influences On Health Behaviors Of African American Women, Keneitra Brown-Mayfield
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States (U.S.), African American women suffer disproportionately due to obesity and chronic diseases. Many studies have examined the culture of African Americans and its influence on their health behaviors in order to gain knowledge to inform obesity and chronic disease prevention interventions. However, a geographical segment of the U.S. African American population shares a unique culture that had yet to be studied. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews to understand the perceptions of overweight and obese African American women living in the Greater New Orleans region about their culture’s role in the prevalence of obesity and obesity-related …

The Paramilitary Police Academy And Conflict Resolution, James Charles
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A police officer’s ability to use conflict resolution is a skill that starts with the training environment of the police academy. This study sought to determine if the paramilitary training environment is affected the students’ ability to use discretion in stressful situations or is promoting threat elimination. This ability to communicate under stress is important as it affected the relationships between communities’ law enforcement agencies. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate whether the paramilitary police academy training environment affects the students’ ability to use verbal conflict resolution skills in place of aggressive physical control methods. This …

Comparing Intrapartum Interventions By Family Medicine Physicians And Obstetricians/Gynecologists In An Urban Academic Medical Center, K. Mariah Chrans
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, over the last four decades, medical interventions in labor were intended to be a rare practice, to be used only when the benefits of birth outweighed the risk to the pregnant individual and fetus. This study was conducted to compare obstetricians gynecologists and family medicine physicians (OB/GYNs and FMPs) in an urban academic medical setting and to identify if they were practicing in an evidence-based manner as recommended by their respecting professional bodies by assessing for (a) associations between provider type and intervention (such as induction and augmentation) and for (b) labor and delivery outcomes for …

Melanoma Cancer Survivors: An Online Community Perspective And Prevention Effort, Lisa Marie Chung
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractMelanoma cancer is a major public health issue and has been associated with tanning and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Minimal information is known about prevention efforts specific to survivors of melanoma cancer who participate in an online community. Surveys of this community differ from previous research of individuals through nononline research; the online community is more likely to be younger in age, comfortable seeking health information using Internet resources, and more advanced in technological capabilities. The main aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the impact of age, gender, and race on melanoma prevention efforts (health maintenance and skin …

Exploring Barriers To Care: Provider Efforts To Improve Retention In Urban-Rural Clusters, Kenyata M. Fletcher
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractOver the years, the infection rates for HIV in the United States has changed partly due to lack of engagement and medication adherence which can lead to substantial declines in individual health. Factors that contribute to the individual’s adherence can include transportation cost, childcare, and lack of finances to name a few. These barriers can often be decreased with the help of supportive service providers and improvement in the patient-provider relationship. Currently, there is limited research that explores how to reduce patient barriers to care, specifically in rural areas. This qualitative study examines how Illinois health care providers help HIV-positive …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As many as 61% of veterans have sought reintegration services after the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) to help them cope with culture shock. TAP is not designed to address cultural transition. However, culture shock has resulted in disassociating behavior, unemployment, and homelessness in the veteran community. The purpose of this study was to identify the unmet reacculturation needs of post-active duty veterans in Chester County, Pennsylvania, who have utilized the United States’ Department of Defense’s TAP. Using an ethnographic approach, this study identified the extent that the TAP helps 13 post-active duty veterans obtain the autonomy stage of culture shock …

Exploring Police Legitimacy Through Procedurally Just Policing Practices In Agencies Using Screen-In And Screen-Out Procedures, David William Justice
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recently there have been widely publicized reports of distrust and a lack of perceived legitimacy in communities across the United States for the police agencies that serve them. Scholars have explored perceptions of police legitimacy and the role of procedural justice in police-community interactions; however, there is a dearth of information concerning the policies of law enforcement agencies using psychological assessments to screen-in or screen-out applicants and the manner in which those agencies serve the community. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore the manner in which one police agency using psychological assessments to screen applicants in and …
When State And Local Policy Clash: The Great Gun Debate In Virginia, Kristin Diane Kremer
When State And Local Policy Clash: The Great Gun Debate In Virginia, Kristin Diane Kremer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Gun policy is a highly contested public policy issue in the United States. The majority of gun legislation is enacted at the state level and a clash exists between state and local initiatives to address the problem of gun violence. As demonstrated in Virginia in 2019-2020, when state governments enact stricter firearms laws, local jurisdictions have responded with 2nd Amendment Sanctuary resolutions. Researchers have documented perceptions on gun policy. However, little information is available regarding attitudes on local jurisdictions enacting resolutions aimed at not enforcing federal or state gun laws. The purpose of this quantitative correlational cross-sectional study was to …

Psychosocial Support During Pregnancy: A Narrative Inquiry Of Low-Income Unmarried Women In Iowa, Summer D. Parrott
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Pregnant women who experience high levels of stress and who lack support are at higher risk for negative birth outcomes for themselves and their offspring including preterm labor, low birthweights, and a myriad of other short- and long-term health and behavioral consequences across the lifespan of the child. Unmarried or socioeconomically disadvantaged women lack the most common resources used to protect against the negative effects of stress during pregnancy. A research gap existed regarding the specific types of psychosocial support perceived by low-income unmarried women to be most beneficial at buffering their perceived prenatal stress. The ecological model and the …

Teacher Perception On Integrating School Psychology In The Developing Nation Of Grenada, Carla Erica Maria St. Louis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractInternationally, formalized school psychology and related services strive to address the academic and mental health of students in schools. In developing nations, teachers are the primary professionals to address students’ needs in schools. Little research has focused on teachers’ perceptions of students’ needs, available services’ quality, and how formalized structures with qualified certified professionals can further address students’ needs. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems and Nastasi’s participatory culture-specific intervention model are the theoretical underpinnings of this qualitative study and focus group interviews were used to investigate special education needs (SEN) teachers’ perceptions. Data were collected using open ended questions and probes with …
