Wilderness Law In The Anthropocene: Purism Or Pragmatism, Phillipa C. Mccormack, Benjamin J. Richardson, David Takacs, Kees Bastmeijer Jan 2021

Wilderness Law In The Anthropocene: Purism Or Pragmatism, Phillipa C. Mccormack, Benjamin J. Richardson, David Takacs, Kees Bastmeijer

Faculty Scholarship

Wilderness is vanishing. Despite explicit legislative protection of wilderness values for over half a century, rapid environmental degradation worldwide in recent decades has severely diminished the extent and quality of terrestrial and marine wilderness to the point where we must reassess the fundamental premises and future of wilderness law. With increased human demands on the natural world, and with climate breakdown looming, the very notion of “wilderness” itself may one day be considered meaningless or irrelevant. We examine legal developments in the United States, Australia, and Europe to critically evaluate the state of wilderness law. In this Anthropocene era, when …

In every toxic-tort case, the plaintiff must prove that the defendant exposed the plaintiff to something that caused an injury. The causal proof is in two parts: proof of general causation and proof of specific causation. General causation addresses the question of whether the exposure can cause injury in anyone. In the area of toxic torts, the evidence available to answer this question comes in the form of groupbasedstudies in the fields of toxicology, epidemiology, and genetics—studies that search for the effects of causes. Proof of general causation, however, is not enough. Because court cases focus on the individual, the …

Who is a member of the political community? What barriers to inclusion do immi- grants face as outsiders to this political community? This article describes several barriers facing immigrants that impede their political belonging. It critiques these barriers not on the basis of immigrants’ rights but based on their rights as current and future members of the political community. This is the second of two Essays. The first Essay focused on voting restrictions impacting Asian American and Latino voters. The second Essay focuses on challenges to including immigrants, Asian Americans, and Latinos in the 2020 Census. Together, the Essays critique …

Race, School Policing, And Public Health, Thalia Gonzalez Jan 2021

Race, School Policing, And Public Health, Thalia Gonzalez

Faculty Scholarship

The ever-growing list of names of Black victims who have died at the hands ofpolice has emboldened a new public narrative that frames police violence—and other more commonplace, though less lethal, disparate policing practices—as a public health crisis rooted in this country’s history of racism and anti-Blackness. This public narrative in turn has spawned a diverse set of responsive actions in both the public and private sectors directed at addressing the effects of individual and structural racism on health. Yet missing from this linkage between police violence and racialized health disparities is any focus on the educational system, despite the …

Études primaires

Objective

Occupational exposure to antineoplastic drugs (ANPs) occurs mainly through dermal contact. Our study was set up to assess the potential exposure of hospital sanitation (HS) personnel, for whom almost no data are available, through contamination of surfaces they regularly touch.

Methods

In the oncology departments of two hospitals around Montreal, surface wipe samples of 120–2000 cm2 were taken at 10 sites cleaned by the HS personnel and five other sites frequently touched by nursing and pharmacy personnel. A few hand wipe samples were collected to explore skin contamination. Wipes were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem–mass spectrometry for …

Leakage Versus Material Filtration In Barrier Facemask Efficiency, Ali Bahloul, Clothilde Brochot, Barbara Layne Jan 2021

Leakage Versus Material Filtration In Barrier Facemask Efficiency, Ali Bahloul, Clothilde Brochot, Barbara Layne

Études primaires

The World Health Association and many governmental agencies recommend the wearing of facemasks by the general public to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is believed that masks can significantly protect others and may offer some protection to the wearer. Although there are standards for FFRs, surgical masks, and recently for barrier face coverings, they all indicate the level of protection for the wearer. However, testing facial masks not at the point of inhalation, but at the source, the exhale, offers a new perspective on how to impede particle emissions. In this paper, the experimental results show that, although the …

On The Removal Of The Open Earcanal High-Pass Filter Effect Due To Its Occlusion: A Bone-Conduction Occlusion Effect Theory, Kevin Carillo, Olivier Doutres, Franck Sgard Jan 2021

On The Removal Of The Open Earcanal High-Pass Filter Effect Due To Its Occlusion: A Bone-Conduction Occlusion Effect Theory, Kevin Carillo, Olivier Doutres, Franck Sgard

Études primaires

The occlusion effect is commonly experienced by in-ear device wearers as an increased loudness sensation of bone-conducted low frequency sounds. A widespread theory proposed by Tonndorf and based on a simplified electro-acoustic model describes the phenomenon as the removal of the open earcanal high-pass filter effect due to a perfect or partial occlusion. However, this filter has not been clearly defined and several ambiguities remain. Revisiting the model, a second order high-pass filter effect for the volume velocity transferred between the earcanal wall and the eardrum is highlighted. This filter remains for partial occlusion but vanishes for perfect occlusion. In …

The purpose of this study was to develop courses of action to promote supervisors’ involvement in the process aimed at achieving sustainable RTW for workers following a work-related musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), and to verify their pertinence, feasibility, and applicability in practice. Methods A two-phase qualitative method was used. (1) Secondary content analysis of 46 interviews of 14 workers post-MSD and 32 other actors in …

Principle Of An Acoustical Method For Estimating The Centroid Position Of The Earcanal Wall Normal Velocity Induced By Bone-Conducted Stimulation: Numerical Evaluation, Kevin Carillo, Olivier Doutres, Franck Sgard Jan 2021

Principle Of An Acoustical Method For Estimating The Centroid Position Of The Earcanal Wall Normal Velocity Induced By Bone-Conducted Stimulation: Numerical Evaluation, Kevin Carillo, Olivier Doutres, Franck Sgard

Études primaires

The occlusion effect is commonly experienced as the altered perception of one’s own physiological noise when the earcanal entrance is blocked. Objectively, this phenomenon corresponds to an acoustic pressure increase in the occluded earcanal. The occlusion effect originates from the earcanal wall normal vibration and depends on the spatial distribution of the latter. At low frequencies, this spatial distribution can be characterized by the position of its centroid along the earcanal middle axis. This paper describes the principle of an acoustical method for estimating this centroid position at low frequencies. The proposed method consists in measuring the eardrum acoustic pressure …

Structural Remodeling Of The Lumbar Multifidus, Thoracolumbar Fascia And Lateral Abdominal Wall Perimuscular Connective Tissues: A Search For Its Potential Determinants, Christian Larivière, Sharon M. Henry, Richard Preuss Jan 2021

Structural Remodeling Of The Lumbar Multifidus, Thoracolumbar Fascia And Lateral Abdominal Wall Perimuscular Connective Tissues: A Search For Its Potential Determinants, Christian Larivière, Sharon M. Henry, Richard Preuss

Études primaires

Recently remodeling of lumbar soft tissues has received increased research attention. However, the major determinants that influence remodeling need to be elucidated in order to understand the impact of different rehabilitation modalities on tissue remodeling. The main aim of this study was to explore the between-subject variance of different measures of lumbar soft tissues quantified with rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI). RUSI measures (n = 8) were collected from 30 subjects without and 34 patients with LBP: (1) lumbar multifidus (LM) echogenicity (fatty infiltration/fibrosis) at three vertebral levels (L3/L4, L4/L5 and L5/S1) (n = 3); (2) posterior layer thickness …

Études primaires

Abstract

Introduction

Growing interest is being paid to the lumbar multifidus (LM) intramuscular fatty infiltrations and fibrosis that are secondary to low back pain as well to the remodeling of perimuscular connective tissues (fasciae) such as the thoracolumbar fascia and fascia sheets separating the abdominalwall muscles. Magnetic resonanceimaging and computed tomography have traditionally been used but rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI) is much more affordable and practical, which can accelerate research and clinical applications on this topic. The aim of this study was to test the medium-term (8 weeks) test-retest reliability of the corresponding RUSI measures.

Methods

Essays On Managerial Opportunism, Pension De-Risking, And Corporate Investment Policies, Brian Silverstein Jan 2021

Essays On Managerial Opportunism, Pension De-Risking, And Corporate Investment Policies, Brian Silverstein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In the first essay, I examine how managerial opportunism affects corporate investment efficiency and, ultimately, firm performance. Prior research establishes corporate investment efficiency as a function of the firm’s information environment and internal governance. To measure managerial opportunism, I use an ex-ante firm level measure of managerial opportunism based on insider trading patterns and test its effects on investment efficiency and performance. Extant research associates opportunistic insider trading with opaque information environments about the firm and weak firm governance, making it an apropos proxy for opportunistic managerial behavior. Despite the clear establishment of opportunistic insider trading as an agency problem …

Food Web Modeling To Assess Interactions Between Artificial Reefs And Natural Reefs, Elizabeth A. Mcnamee Jan 2021

Food Web Modeling To Assess Interactions Between Artificial Reefs And Natural Reefs, Elizabeth A. Mcnamee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The effect of artificial reefs on natural reefs is poorly understood. This study focused on Aquarius Reef Base (ARB), an underwater habitat offshore of Key Largo, Florida, and 14 natural reef sites spanning 4 habitats, on the surrounding Conch Reef. Food web models were created for ARB and natural reef habitats. Biomass at each habitat was quantified by fish surveys. Using Ecopath, species were organized into functional groups with supporting data from previous research for other inputs. ARB’s food web was found to have a large predator biomass with insufficient prey biomass to sustain the population, suggesting that these predators …

Monitoring Wading Bird Colonies Using Acoustic Sampling And Regional Shifts In Wading Bird Nest Abundances In A Pulsed Wetland System, Rachel C. Larson Jan 2021

Monitoring Wading Bird Colonies Using Acoustic Sampling And Regional Shifts In Wading Bird Nest Abundances In A Pulsed Wetland System, Rachel C. Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Wetland loss and degradation have led to the development of restoration programs worldwide, many of which monitor wading bird populations as indicators of wetland quality. Therefore, efficient, standardized monitoring is integral to restoration progress. I tested the use of passive acoustic monitoring to estimate nest abundances and provisioning rates in wading bird colonies and examined regional nesting dynamics in the Florida Everglades, where a long monitoring record enables analysis of nesting patterns relative to hydrologic changes. I found that call rates can serve as indices of colony nest abundances and begging call rate and timing are indicative of provisioning events. …

Photoreceptor Degeneration And Abnormal Retinal Vasculogenesis, Matthew Nguyen Jan 2021

Photoreceptor Degeneration And Abnormal Retinal Vasculogenesis, Matthew Nguyen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Abnormal vasculature in the retina, specifically tortuous blood vessels, are common to many of the most prevalent retinal degenerative diseases currently affecting millions across the world. The mechanisms of their formation and development in the context of retinal degenerative disease, however, are still poorly understood. The rd1 and rd10 mice are relatively well-studied animal models of retinal degenerative disease, however, there lacks a systematic characterization of vascular changes co-related to photoreceptor degeneration in the rd1 and rd10 retina. Here, we utilize advancements in confocal microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and image analysis software in order to systematically characterize vascular changes before and after …

Confirmation Of New Crapemyrtle Bark Scale (Acanthococcus Lagerstroemiae) Hosts (Spiraea And Callicarpa) Through Dna Barcoding, Allen Szalanski

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Crapemyrtle bark scale (CMBS; Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae Kuwana) is an invasive insect that was first discovered in the United States in 2004. The polyphagous feeding habit of CMBS has allowed it to infest a wide range of plant species beyond its primary host, Lagerstroemia. Using molecular approaches, we studied the genetic relationships between CMBS specimens and their hosts from different geographic locations. Naturally occurring CMBS infestations were confirmed on American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana L.), a native plant species in the United States, and spirea (Spiraea L.). The new infestation of CMBS found on Spiraea raises the alarm that other economically important …

Isolation Of Metarhizium Guizhouense And Metarhizium Robertsii Strains From Soil-Exposed Amblyomma Americanum (Acarina: Ixodidae) From Northwest Arkansas, Usa, Allen Szalanski

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acarina: Ixodidae), is the most abundant tick species found in Arkansas and is involved in the trans-mission of pathogens of medical and veterinary importance. When not feeding, most non-nidicolous tick species shelter in the soil and leaf litter where they may be exposed to and potentially infected with entomopathogenic fungi that reside naturally in the soil. Entomopathogenic fungi in the genus Metarhizium Sorokīn (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) have shown promise as biological control agents of ticks. Here, the first study to isolate and identify Arkansas-derived isolates of Metarhizium from A. americanum ticks is presented. We …
