Post Pandemic Shopping, Karlie Matejcek Jan 2021

Post Pandemic Shopping, Karlie Matejcek

Architecture Theses

Shopping malls were originally designed to give people the opportunity to socialize and shop within the same environment. The shopping mall concept is extremely important within the urban spacial system, as it connects both leisure activities and commercial businesses into one environment for pedestrians to enjoy. Retail consumers and visitors are able to fulfill their need for visual stimulation from their surrounding environment as well as the ability to enjoy various relaxing activities in this area. The concept of the retail experience was to bring people together and provide many opportunities for social exchange in one setting. How will this …

Homeostasis, Grace Sundberg Jan 2021

Homeostasis, Grace Sundberg

Architecture Theses

Homeostasis is the self-regulating process by which stability is maintained during the adjustment to conditions. This is similarly seen in how our built environment provides stability to our ever-changing health, wellness, and environment. Utilizing Zero Carbon principles and WELL Building Standards can assist in supporting our built environment to be adaptable to maintain the balance of homeostasis that is desired. By following these standards, the structure that is created should enhance our state of being and improve our sustainability. These factors are extremely prevalent in a society that is overusing resources, overexerting themselves, and underutilizing the power of architecture. The …

Designing For Memory Loss, Mary Biegert Jan 2021

Designing For Memory Loss, Mary Biegert

Architecture Theses

We all live with the fact that someday our loved ones will need to have help with day to day life and that we will too. As of right now there is a generally negative feeling towards moving out of one’s home and into an assisted living facility, and eventually into a nursing home. There is an added anxiety when having to look into memory loss facilities. These institutions are taking peoples' independence and in return creating a glum reality for people who are already suffering. The current pandemic that our world is in, and Covid 19 being the deadliest …

Optical Hygiene And Modernity: A Site Analysis Of Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant Using Lefebvre’S Triad, William R. Stone Jan 2021

Optical Hygiene And Modernity: A Site Analysis Of Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant Using Lefebvre’S Triad, William R. Stone

Pomona Senior Theses

Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant sits at the edge of Los Angeles County as an almost unknowable infrastructure. Unlike the city block, the grocery store, or one’s own home, this integral part of the urban landscape asks not to be experienced by its users, only the employees who work there every day. This place, which I’d hesitate to call a place, amalgamates preconceptions about infrastructure, sewage, purity, danger, modern architecture, and the role of the state.

In this thesis I conduct a site analysis of Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in three parts, or moments based loosely on Henri Lefebvre’s conceptual triad: …

Exploring The Impacts Of No-Till Agriculture And “Three Sisters” Intercropping On Carbon Sequestration And Soil Health, Chloe Wanaselja Jan 2021

Exploring The Impacts Of No-Till Agriculture And “Three Sisters” Intercropping On Carbon Sequestration And Soil Health, Chloe Wanaselja

Pomona Senior Theses

This project seeks to explore whether regenerative agriculture can be a tool to mitigate climate change and increase resilience. It asks if specific practices of no-till (NT) and “Three Sisters” intercropping can contribute to a collective climate mitigation “toolkit” across regions of the USA.

Climate change is the existential threat of the century. We are already experiencing shifts in weather and disease patterns and increased food insecurity. Industrial agriculture is a major contributor to climate change, highlighting the imperative of the development of and transition to well-informed regenerative agricultural practices. Despite the urgency, a comprehensive set of agricultural “climate best …

The Assassin Was Not Insane: The Acquittal Of The Assassin Of A Genocide's Architect As Symbolic Jury Nullification, Christian G. Ohanian Jan 2021

The Assassin Was Not Insane: The Acquittal Of The Assassin Of A Genocide's Architect As Symbolic Jury Nullification, Christian G. Ohanian

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The acquittal of Soghomon Tehlirian for assassinating Talaat Pasha, a key architect of the Armenian Genocide, represents a significant instance of symbolic jury nullification. This verdict symbolically addressed the moral and legal failure to hold Talaat Pasha accountable, influencing the development of international human rights law and figures like Raphael Lemkin.

Social Rights And The Welfare State: A Necessary Relation, Mario Santiago Juarez Jan 2021

Social Rights And The Welfare State: A Necessary Relation, Mario Santiago Juarez

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The article argues that the welfare state is indispensable for fulfilling social rights, emphasizing that mere recognition of these rights is insufficient without robust state commitment to public policies and systems. It traces the historical development of social rights from the industrial revolution to modern times, highlighting the role of key reforms and international frameworks. The analysis critiques the limitations of judicial enforcement and advocates for structural policies, such as progressive taxation and full employment, to ensure equitable access to essential services like education, healthcare, and housing.

Andrews University Communication Under The Covid-19 Pandemic: Feedback Analysis Of International Students, Brice B. Eboule Jan 2021

Andrews University Communication Under The Covid-19 Pandemic: Feedback Analysis Of International Students, Brice B. Eboule

Master's Theses

This research is an informative analysis of international students’ feedback on the Andrews University (AU) crisis communication during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Participants were 21 years or older, on student visas, living on-campus or in student communities and had attended AU for at least 2 years. The theory informing this study is situational crisis communication theory (SCCT). The SCCT argues that the severity of the crisis defines which communicational crisis strategy will be more effective in minimizing attributions and adverse press while both maintaining and enhancing the organization's credibility. The findings of this study indicated that 84 percent of …

The Effect Of Virtual Learning On Parents During Covid-19, Sheila Reeves Jan 2021

The Effect Of Virtual Learning On Parents During Covid-19, Sheila Reeves

Master's Theses

Parents were affected in numerous ways by the sudden shut down of schools and switch to virtual learning in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of these ways included use of technology, income, race, time, mental health, family life and parent insecurities. This study investigates parents' perspectives of some ways they were affected in regards to the virtual learning of their child(ren). All parents with children enrolled at Madison Campus Elementary School were invited to participate in the study, as they had at least one year's experience with their child(ren) in virtual learning.

Data was collected using a …

Characterization Of Spontaneous Preeclampsia In The African Green Monkey (Chlorocebus Aethiops Sabaeus), Chelsea Christina Weaver Jan 2021

Characterization Of Spontaneous Preeclampsia In The African Green Monkey (Chlorocebus Aethiops Sabaeus), Chelsea Christina Weaver

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Hypertensive pregnancy disorders are a major contribution to maternal and neonatal mortality worldwide. Two of these disorders, preeclampsia and chronic hypertension in pregnancy, affect up to 10% of all pregnancies. These hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are associated with long-term, postnatal risk factors for both mother and offspring. Despite numerous recent advances in preeclampsia research, the underlying mechanisms are still not understood. This could be due to lack of a spontaneous animal model. This dissertation presents the African Green Monkey (AGM; Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) as the first known spontaneous animal model of preeclampsia and a highly translational model of chronic …

Spontaneous Postpartum Hypertension In The African Green Monkey, Patrick Rivera Jan 2021

Spontaneous Postpartum Hypertension In The African Green Monkey, Patrick Rivera

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Postpartum hypertension (PPHT) is a hypertensive disorder of the puerperium that occurs in women at a rate between 0.8-28% although the exact incidence is unknown due primarily to its transient presentation during a time of reduced medical supervision. The etiology of PPHT is currently unknown with no present experimental animal model. We present the African green monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus; AGM) as a potentially translational NHP model of PPHT in humans. AGMs were identified as PPHT using Doppler sphygmomanometry and American Heart Association standards of hypertension for systolic blood pressure (systolic blood pressure > 140 mmHg). Disease characteristics were …

Cellular Bioenergetics Regulates Cell Proliferation During Mammalian Regeneration, Sandeep Saxena Jan 2021

Cellular Bioenergetics Regulates Cell Proliferation During Mammalian Regeneration, Sandeep Saxena

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Mammalian system consists of stress-sensing molecules that regulates their cellular response against damage, injury and oncogenic stress. During vertebrate regeneration, cells responding to injury re-enter the cell cycle and proliferate to form new tissue. Cell cycle re-entry or arrest is at least partly regulated by cellular senescence which negatively impacts the proliferative pool of cells during regeneration. What remains unclear is whether cells in regenerating systems possess an increased propensity to proliferate and are refractory to signals that induce senescence. My thesis work has focused on how fibroblasts from the ear pinna differentially regulate healing in highly regenerative mammals (e.g., …

Cloning And Functional Characterizations Of Circular Rnas From The Human Mapt Locus, Justin R. Welden Jan 2021

Cloning And Functional Characterizations Of Circular Rnas From The Human Mapt Locus, Justin R. Welden

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Under pathophysiological conditions, the microtubule protein tau (MAPT) forms neurofibrillary tangles that are the hallmark of sporadic Alzheimer’s disease as well as familial frontotemporal dementias linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17). In this work, I report that MAPT forms circular RNAs through backsplicing of exon 12 to either exon 10 or exon 7 (12→10; 12→7), and that these circular RNAs are translated into proteins.

Using stable cell lines overexpressing the circular tau RNAs 12→7 and 12→10, we have discovered that the tau circular RNA 12→7 is translated in a rolling circle, giving rise to multiple proteins. This circular RNA …

Pre-Clinical Advancements In Biomarkers, Tools, And Therapeutics For A Metabolic Neurodegenerative Disease, Zoë Simmons Jan 2021

Pre-Clinical Advancements In Biomarkers, Tools, And Therapeutics For A Metabolic Neurodegenerative Disease, Zoë Simmons

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Glycogen is the storage form of glucose and a highly important substrate for cellular metabolism. Characterization of the enzymes and mechanisms of glycogen metabolism began over 70 years ago and over the last 20 years, a previously unknown protein called laforin has emerged as an important contributor to glycogen metabolism homeostasis. Multiple labs demonstrated that laforin is a glycogen phosphatase and mutations in the gene encoding laforin cause the formation of aberrant glycogen-like aggregates called Lafora bodies (LBs). LBs are cytoplasmic, water-insoluble aggregates that drive neurodegeneration and early death in Lafora disease (LD) patients. The direct relationship between mutated laforin, …

Faster Fashion: The Piracy Paradox And Its Perils, Kal Raustiala, Christopher Jon Sprigman Jan 2021

Faster Fashion: The Piracy Paradox And Its Perils, Kal Raustiala, Christopher Jon Sprigman

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The article introduces the "piracy paradox," arguing that the fashion industry's ability to thrive despite widespread copying is due to the freedom to copy, which accelerates the fashion cycle and drives creativity. It challenges the conventional view that intellectual property rights are essential for innovation. The authors also address critiques of fast fashion's environmental, labor, and social impacts, suggesting these issues are not unique to fashion and should be resolved through broader policies rather than intellectual property law.
