Fun Behind The Wire?: Francis “Huck” O’Neill And The Canadian Pow Experience In Hong Kong, 1941-1945, Michael B. Pass

Canadian Military History

Many prior studies of Canadian POWs during the Pacific War have focused on the sadism and mistreatment of their Japanese jailors, helping to make this a dominant image of the conflict. This article moderates this view by discrediting the notion that Japanese soldiers were motivated by an omnipresent belief in “bushido,” as well as by studying newly discovered documents produced in captivity by Canadian Auxiliary Services Officer Francis O’Neill. It argues that Japanese conduct towards POWs was more variable than previously recognised and highlights moments of levity and fun as O’Neill and his fellow prisoners organised sporting events, games and …

The Battle Of Hong Kong, Forgotten And Remembered: C Force, Cultural Memory And Commemoration, Alexandra Mckinnon

Canadian Military History

This article considers how veterans of C Force and their families have shaped Canadian cultural memory of the Battle of Hong Kong and their engagement with memorial and material landscapes. In considering bottom-up processes of commemoration, this article suggests that the “forgotten battle” of Canadian service in the Second World War has not been forgotten after all. Instead, Canadian cultural memory of the battle reflects the enduring impact of individual experience in shaping national narratives.

This tumor was diagnosed through spine magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) examination. The child presented with spastic paraparesis of about three months’ duration. The child was set for spine computed tomographic(CT) scan examination (prior to the MRI study) that failed to detect the lesion well, leading to delay of correct management. MRI should be carried out directly as the investigation of first choice whenever spinal lesion questionable in non-informative CT scan study. In …

The Role Of African Proverbs In Advancing Information Systems Research, Tiko Iyamu Dec 2021

The Role Of African Proverbs In Advancing Information Systems Research, Tiko Iyamu

The African Journal of Information Systems

Despite the richness of African proverbs, they have been muted in information systems (IS) research. This explicitly contributes to the lag in developing information systems and technology solutions for African people by African researchers in African terms. It is on this basis that two related objectives were formulated: (1) to examine the role which African proverbs can play in further advancing IS research, and (2) to understand how the concept can be employed to indigenize IS research. Qualitative data were collected from different sources, and the dimension of social change from structuration theory was employed to examine the role African …

Government Workspace Digitalization And Socioeconomic Development Outcomes In Ghana, Winfred Ofoe Larkotey, John Effah, Richard Boateng

The African Journal of Information Systems

The study sought to understand how the structurational environment shapes socioeconomic outcomes of government workspace digitalization in Ghana based on a qualitative, interpretive case study and the structurational model of technology as a theoretical lens. The findings show how the availability of electronic transactions law, government borrowing, and extendable system design can positively influence socioeconomic outcomes of government workspace digitalization. However, use of multiple system development environments, bureaucracy, a within-country digital divide, and a persistent physical signature and letterhead culture can negatively influence the socioeconomic development goals of government workspace digitalization.

Integrating Social Justice Theory Into Engineering Practice, Letitia Thomas Dec 2021

Integrating Social Justice Theory Into Engineering Practice, Letitia Thomas

Baldy Center Blog

Engineering education has historically been limited in developing students’ awareness of social justice issues, even though research tells us that students who are underrepresented (by class, race, gender, etc.) can be empowered and retained when participating in social justice projects related to engineering (Lucena & Leydens, 2015; Mejia, 2017). My goal is to integrate social justice theory into engineering practice, to empower UB students to make a lasting, collective impact in their community. I want students to study and learn social justice themes while becoming more socially and critically conscious about their own influence, as creators of technology.
