The Efficacy Of Tocilizumab As A Therapeutic Treatment For Sars-Cov-2 Infections: An Integrative Literature Review, Amanda Vancene Peterson

Nursing Masters Papers

The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and resulting COVID-19 infection has spread from a cluster of unidentified pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China, into an ongoing global health crisis. The strain on the healthcare systems and loss of human life has made finding ways to treat severe COVID-19 infections of the utmost importance. Mortality from COVID-19 has been shown to result from an overwhelming inflammatory response similar to the cytokine release syndrome seen in certain autoimmune reactions (Tleyjeh et al., 2020). It also can be seen after chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy for certain cancers. It is hypothesized that treatments targeting the …

What Has Been Will Be Again: Photographic Meditations On Social Isolation In Alabama, Jared Ragland, Catherine Wilkins Dec 2021

What Has Been Will Be Again: Photographic Meditations On Social Isolation In Alabama, Jared Ragland, Catherine Wilkins

Study the South

"Social isolation is both a phrase and an experience that has defined the past year in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic. Jared Ragland’s ongoing photographic travelogue, What Has Been Will Be Again: Photographic Meditations on Social Isolation in Alabama, expressly evokes the loneliness that has characterized this period; solitary subjects inhabit these frames, and many images in the series are devoid of people altogether. One can imagine the photographer, alone, navigating deserted landscapes with only a camera as his companion, documenting the recent ravaging of the public sphere. Yet, while the theme is certainly au courant, What …

Engaging Young Black Males In Sexual And Reproductive Health Care: A Review Of The Literature, Jade C. Burns, Jaquetta Reeves, Wilma J. Calvert, Mackenzie Adams, Rico Ozuna-Harrison, Maya J. Smith, Salisha Baranwal, Keder Johnson, Caryn R. R. Rodgers, Daphne C. Watkins

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

Young Black males (YBM) ages 18 to 24 years are more at risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and have a substantially greater need for sexual reproductive health (SRH) services than other groups. Despite this significant need, the extant literature does not provide a comprehensive picture of how YBM seek preventive care services (e.g., STI testing). Therefore, the purpose of this review is to address YBM’s SRH access and use of STI/HIV testing and screening in this population, with a specific emphasis on young heterosexual Black males, by identifying barriers and facilitators of engaging with SRH care. An electronic …

Enhancing Therapeutic Approaches For Melanoma Patients Targeting Epigenetic Modifiers., Maria Gracia-Hernandez, Zuleima Munoz, Alejandro Villagra

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Melanoma is the least common but deadliest type of skin cancer. Melanomagenesis is driven by a series of mutations and epigenetic alterations in oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes that allow melanomas to grow, evolve, and metastasize. Epigenetic alterations can also lead to immune evasion and development of resistance to therapies. Although the standard of care for melanoma patients includes surgery, targeted therapies, and immune checkpoint blockade, other therapeutic approaches like radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immune cell-based therapies are used for patients with advanced disease or unresponsive to the conventional first-line therapies. Targeted therapies such as the use of BRAF and …

Habitat for Humanity (HFH) requested a carbon footprint analysis of their most recent home build. Mark Ogland-Hand, a representative of HFH, connected with Professor Heun’s ENGR 333 students to perform the carbon footprint analysis on their new low carbon house. Assuming Consumer’s Energy will incorporate their predicted percentage of renewables into their electric grid, the London home reduces projected carbon emissions by 18% when compared to a “To Code” house over a 25 year lifespan. For the current Consumer’s Energy grid, the “Improved” London house is shown to reduce projected carbon emissions by 30% when compared to the current London …

Identifying the leading health and lifestyle factors for the risk of incident dementia and Alzheimer's disease has yet to translate to risk reduction. To understand why, we examined the discrepancies between observational and clinical trial evidence for seven modifiable risk factors: type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, estrogens, inflammation, omega-3 fatty acids, and hyperhomocysteinemia. Sample heterogeneity and paucity of intervention details (dose, timing, formulation) were common themes. Epidemiological evidence is more mature for some interventions (eg, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs]) than others. Trial data are promising for anti-hypertensives and B vitamin supplementation. Taken together, these risk factors highlight a future need …
