What Happened In Harris Neck?: Racism, Resistance, And Futures, Anna Sharpe Jan 2021

What Happened In Harris Neck?: Racism, Resistance, And Futures, Anna Sharpe

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

This project traces the history and legacy of the seizure of Harris Neck, approximately 2,600 acres on the Georgia coast, once largely composed of rice and cotton plantations. After the Civil War, freedmen and women transformed the area into a thriving Black community. The community of approximately a hundred families, a school, a church, a post office, and many small farms and businesses flourished from the late 1800’s until 1942, when the federal government seized Harris Neck for use as an Army airfield.

The procedures used by the federal government to seize and, later, reallocate Harris Neck will be examined, …

Residual Spatial Autocorrelation In Macroecological And Biogeographical Modeling: A Review, Guetchine Gaspard Jan 2021

Residual Spatial Autocorrelation In Macroecological And Biogeographical Modeling: A Review, Guetchine Gaspard

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

Macroecological and biogeographical modelers have predicted the distribution of species across space relying on the relationship between biotic processes and environmental variables. Such a method employs data associated, for instance, with species abundance or presence/absence, climate, geomorphology, and soils. Statistical analyses found in previous studies have highlighted the importance of accounting for the effects of spatial autocorrelation (SAC), which indicates a level of dependence between pairs of nearby observations. A consensus has existed that residual spatial autocorrelation (rSAC) can substantially impact modeling processes and inferences. However, more emphasis should be put on identifying the sources of rSAC and the degree …

Political Economy Of The Production Of Heritage Space In A Centro Histórico: Attracting Real Estate Capital, Expelling People. The Case Of Cartagena (Colombia), Camilo Rey-Sabogal

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

Cartagena is a South American city whose historical built environment has been recognized as a World Heritage Site due to the preservation of elements of the Spanish military architecture of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. This recognition promoted a tourist and real estate boom in the Centro Histórico and, as a result, its inhabitants have faced gentrification dynamics that are expelling them to other areas of the city. During the last 15 years, these dynamics have shown a strong acceleration. Therefore, the Centro Histórico is experiencing, on the one hand, huge inflows of capital for the purchase of properties …

Micromending The Metabolic Rift: An Analysis Of Food Waste Composting Systems In Lexington, Kentucky, Casey Byrd Jan 2021

Micromending The Metabolic Rift: An Analysis Of Food Waste Composting Systems In Lexington, Kentucky, Casey Byrd

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

The metabolic rift theory explores materials and social exchanges between rural and city communities and human-nature relations. Metabolic rifts can exist both environmentally and socially and are often geographically or culturally unique. Ultimately the metabolic rift is earmarked by increasing disconnection between humans and their environment. This thesis draws upon life cycle analysis studies, social-economic studies, and environmental and sustainability studies to argue that large-scale contemporary urban composting efforts, although well intended, are insufficient to mitigate the effects of the metabolic rift. Mobilizing theories around capitalism and the metabolic rift, this research paper connects social, environmental, and economic notions of …

Bio-Spatial Policing In Theory And Practice: Examining Impacts And Resistance Through Mobilities And Children's Everyday Life, Emily Kaufman Jan 2021

Bio-Spatial Policing In Theory And Practice: Examining Impacts And Resistance Through Mobilities And Children's Everyday Life, Emily Kaufman

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

Despite decades of reforms and technological innovations, increasing evidence shows that state securitization disproportionately harms already racially, spatially, and socio-economically marginalized communities. My research investigates uneven impacts of state securitization, from punitive welfare programs to school surveillance to policing. Across sites, I focus on scales, voices and the everyday lived experiences often left out of scholarly discourse and sensational media. In the current climate of growing awareness and scholarship on police violence, my dissertation addresses three less-studied areas: 1) the interplay between racial, gendered, spatial, and technified police practices; 2) how these practices impact the everyday lives of those racially …

Building Quality? Migration, Suzhi, And Subaltern Masculinity In The Shanghai Construction Industry, Leif Johnson Jan 2021

Building Quality? Migration, Suzhi, And Subaltern Masculinity In The Shanghai Construction Industry, Leif Johnson

Theses and Dissertations--Geography

This doctoral dissertation providesa novel perspective on the everyday lives of construction workers in urban China, demonstrating the underpinnings of urban infrastructure and citizenship policy in affective and gendered relations surrounding the construction industry. Drawing on 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork in Shanghai, China, this dissertation makes a series of three related arguments: First, focusing on the role that migrant labor plays in the construction of urban infrastructure in Shanghai, I argue that the physical existence of infrastructure itself is inextricably tied to systems that govern rural-urban migration across China. Second, building from the Chinese concept of suzhi as both …

Parent Perceptions Of Quality Early Childhood Education Programs, Lichelle Jones-Wilkins Jan 2021

Parent Perceptions Of Quality Early Childhood Education Programs, Lichelle Jones-Wilkins

Doctor of Education Dissertations

Early childhood education (ECE) programs play an important role in a child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. ECE programs strive to prepare the students for kindergarten. The importance and value of ECE programs have increasingly become more important to state and federal officials. As a result, these officials have made significant efforts to make ECE programs more accessible. When it comes to selecting educational programs for their children, parents are frequently the primary decision makers. Rather than parental choice, studies usually focus on stakeholder perspectives on quality care. The goal of this 3-phase study was to better understand the factors …

Nationalism And The Modernisation Of Thai Architectural Education At Chulalongkorn University In The 1920s And 1930s, Chomchon Fusinpaiboon, Thomas Coomans, Pirasri Povatong

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

This paper examines the modernization of Thai architecture through the establishment of Thailand’s first architecture school, its curriculum, its architecture, and the pivotal role of the first generation of Thai architecture professors, who had been educated in England and France. It demonstrates how the establishment of the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, stemmed from the Siamese government’s growing nationalism that aimed to end foreign domination in both Siam’s construction industry and international diplomacy. The process, however, involved the adoption of a western curriculum — which was considered modern — and adapting it to be more Thai for nationalist purposes. …

Understanding Thai Urban Pedestrian Culture During Noon Break : How Sidewalk Users Experience The Walking Infrastructure In Bangkok, Thailand, Shusak Janpathompong, Akinobu Murakami Jan 2021

Understanding Thai Urban Pedestrian Culture During Noon Break : How Sidewalk Users Experience The Walking Infrastructure In Bangkok, Thailand, Shusak Janpathompong, Akinobu Murakami

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

The noon break or lunch hour in Bangkok’s central business district (CBD) is when pedestrians wander around for various activities and purposes, in addition to having a meal, within a limited time frame. It is the only break from their daily working routines for energy recovery or socializing, which, in turn, increases readiness to continue working in the afternoon. Commercial activities preferred by pedestrians during this break contribute to increased economic activity. Since pedestrian behavior depends on the cultural context, this research aims to understand Thai urban pedestrian culture that benefits the public, both socially and economically, and to investigate …

The Vienna Fortresses, Michael J. Zeps S.J. Jan 2021

The Vienna Fortresses, Michael J. Zeps S.J.

History Faculty Research and Publications

While I would not like to saddle the military historian Gordon A. Craig with the content of this book still it would not be complete without saying that encouragement to pursue this line of thought came from him. I showed him some photographs of municipal apartment blocks, known as Gemeindebauten, built by the Social Democrats in Vienna between the wars and he spontaneously labeled the architecture "provocative."

Hans and Rudolph Hautmann had recently compiled a comprehensive book on the apartment projects of Red Vienna, but I wanted to visit the sites myself, being less enthusiastic than they were about the …

Achieving Privacy, Anupam Chander, Meaza Abraham, Sandeep Chandy, Yuan Fang, Dayoung Park, Isabel Yu Jan 2021

Achieving Privacy, Anupam Chander, Meaza Abraham, Sandeep Chandy, Yuan Fang, Dayoung Park, Isabel Yu

SMU Law Review

Is privacy a luxury for the rich? Remarkably, there is a dearth of literature evaluating whether data privacy is too costly for companies to implement or too expensive for governments to enforce. This paper is the first to offer a review of the costs of compliance and to summarize national budgets for enforcement. Our study suggests that, while privacy may indeed prove costly for companies to implement and may present a special burden for small and medium-sized businesses, it is not too costly for governments to enforce. Indeed, the European Union, seen as a global champion of privacy, expends less …

Floristic Diversity Of Threatened Woodlands Of Kazakhstan Formed By Populus Pruinosa Schrenk, Tamara Stikhareva, Anna Ivashchenko, Vitaliy Kirillov, Alimzhan Rakhimzhanov

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Climate aridization and increased anthropogenic pressure pose a severe threat to natural vegetation, including coastal plant communities. Those located in river basins of the desert zone of Central Asia are among the most vulnerable. Of the variety of ecosystems of the Ili-Balkhash region of Kazakhstan, forests dominated by a rare relict species Populus pruinosa Schrenk are of particular concern. This species occupies a very narrow ecological niche associated with river banks of the arid zone, which makes it very vulnerable to adverse natural and anthropogenic factors. The main objective of the research conducted was to fill the knowledge gap related …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Knowledge of the Late Paleozoic sedimentary history of the northern Gondwana shelf is advanced by new data from the Şort Dere section (Hakkari Basin). Early Carboniferous myalinid bivalves from the Middle East are reported here for the first time. The pre-Permian basement of the Hakkari Basin consists of a Lower Carboniferous sedimentary sequence including the Köprülü and Belek formations. The Köprülü Formation has yielded rich assemblages of vertebrates and invertebrates. Hitherto myalinid bivalves were unknown from this formation; this paper reports the discovery of small and poorly calcified myaliniform shells from two thin beds in the middle part of the …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

South Western Anatolia is dominated by E-W and NW-SE trending active faults. The dip-slip Yatağan Fault is one of these active structures that trends in a NW direction for ~30 km. To assess the relative tectonic activity of the Yatağan Fault, two geomorphic segments were defined along the fault: the FS-1 (northern segment) and the FS-2 (southern segment). The vertical slip rate pattern of the fault was analyzed using steepness indexes, chi (χ) plots, and log-log slope area graphs. Results of the analyses indicate that the steepness of the streams draining the footwall reveal increasingly higher values downstream along the …

Instructional Leadership Practices: Teachers Perceptions Of A Rural School Principal In Fiji, Govinda I. Lingam, Narsamma Lingam, Sunil K. Singh

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which teachers perceive their principal to be effectively exhibiting an instructional leadership role. Data for the study were collected from teachers (N=24) in a rural secondary school in Fiji using the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS) developed and advocated by Hallinger (1990). In addition to Likert scale items, the questionnaire included open-ended questions to gain deeper insights into teachers’ ratings of each item. Analyses of the data revealed that ratings for the principal were the highest for communicating school goals to students and protecting instructional time while supervision …

Fostering Values Through Authentic Storytelling, Maya Gunawardena, Bernard Brown Jan 2021

Fostering Values Through Authentic Storytelling, Maya Gunawardena, Bernard Brown

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Stories are used for diverse pedagogical purposes. Storytelling is a culturally inclusive and widely used pedagogical technique. However, the success of storytelling interventions in education can be dependent upon how teachers engage students to analyse experiences, and events to gain deeper insights to influence change in their thinking and behaviour. This paper firstly provides a literature review which synthesises Australian Curriculum content and outcome-based approaches used in values education in primary schools including storytelling. Secondly, it offers a novel taxonomy supported by a pedagogical model for storytelling. The proposed pedagogical model contains a constructivist process that can enable teachers to …

Triad Role In Shaping Tanzanian Pre-Service Teachers' Experience Of Teaching Practice, Hawa Mohamed Mpate, Glenda Campbell-Evans, Jan Gray Jan 2021

Triad Role In Shaping Tanzanian Pre-Service Teachers' Experience Of Teaching Practice, Hawa Mohamed Mpate, Glenda Campbell-Evans, Jan Gray

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study explores the role of the triad relationship in shaping pre-service teachers’ experience during teaching practice. The study is descriptive in nature employing a qualitative approach and data from a sample of five pre-service teachers, five college supervisors, five mentor teachers and three Heads of school. The data were analysed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that limited triad relationship, limited social and instructional support from mentor teachers and supervisors’ limited assessment and feedback provision, negatively impacted pre-service teachers’ learning during teaching practice. To achieve a functioning triad the paper suggests that it is important to equally engage supervisors, …

Secondary Curriculum Literacy And Teacher Word-Knowledge: Further Findings From A Western Australian Ite Cohort Study, Brian R. Moon, Barbara R. Harris, Anne-Maree Hays Jan 2021

Secondary Curriculum Literacy And Teacher Word-Knowledge: Further Findings From A Western Australian Ite Cohort Study, Brian R. Moon, Barbara R. Harris, Anne-Maree Hays

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The Australian Government, in its Professional Standards for Teachers and Australian Curriculum framework, requires that all secondary teachers actively teach the specific literacy of their learning area. Yet achievement of that goal hinges on teachers having first acquired the pre-requisite literate competencies during their own schooling. There are reasons to doubt that this is the case for some graduate teachers, which means attempts to raise standards in schools are beset by a troubling circularity. Here we illustrate the problem with further findings from a Western Australian ITE Cohort Study (n=393), focussing this time on the word knowledge of secondary teaching …

Volvopluteus And Pluteus Section Pluteus (Agaricales: Pluteaceae) In Turkey Based Onmorphological And Molecular Data, Oğuzhan Kaygusuz, İbrahi̇m Türkekul, Henning Knudsen, Nelson Menolli Jr. Jan 2021

Volvopluteus And Pluteus Section Pluteus (Agaricales: Pluteaceae) In Turkey Based Onmorphological And Molecular Data, Oğuzhan Kaygusuz, İbrahi̇m Türkekul, Henning Knudsen, Nelson Menolli Jr.

Turkish Journal of Botany

Pluteus and Volvopluteus are two closely related genera of Pluteaceae that comprise saprotrophic fungi. Although the genera have been well-studied in Europe and North and South America, the diversity of Pluteus, mainly Pluteus sect. Pluteus, and Volvopluteus in Turkey is poorly known due to insufficient morphological descriptions and a lack of DNA sequence data. In this study, the diversity of Pluteus sect. Pluteus and Volvopluteus in Turkey is evaluated by employing both morphological features and phylogenetic approaches. A general phylogeny of Pluteus sect. Pluteus based on sequences of nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 = ITS) region is presented and …

Genetic Structure Of Zannichellia L. Populations According To Mountain Barriers In Iranas Revealed By Issr And Srap Markers, Shabnam Abbasi, Saeed Afsharzadeh, Mehri Dinarvand

Turkish Journal of Botany

Zannichellia L. (Potamogetonaceae) is a widespread aquatic genus that is distributed in temperate and subtropical aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Because the biogeographical location of Iran includes mountain ranges and deserts that may cause different habitat types, it was assumed that these Zannichellia populations would be stronger differentiated than observed in Zannichellia from temperate regions. The present study aimed to test whether Z. palustris would demonstrate high levels of genetic differentiation over long distances and across mountain ranges. The genetic structure of the populations of Zannichellia was investigated using inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR) and sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) as molecular markers. …
