Hollywood Imagines Revolutionary Haiti: The Forgotten Film Lydia Bailey (1952), Judith E. Smith Jan 2021

Hollywood Imagines Revolutionary Haiti: The Forgotten Film Lydia Bailey (1952), Judith E. Smith

American Studies Faculty Publication Series

This essay explores the history of Lydia Bailey, the only US studio-made film to depict the Haitian Revolutionary period. It asks why, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, such an unlikely project might have seemed commercially promising enough to justify a significant production budget. The essay draws on private studio memos as well as public press discussions to shed light on the high stakes in debates over racial representation and colonialism/decolonization in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and to illuminate everyday assumptions of white supremacy as these shaped the making of the film and its promotion. Integrated Estuary Governance, Mary Jane Angelo, J.W. Glass Jan 2021

Integrated Estuary Governance, Mary Jane Angelo, J.W. Glass

UF Law Faculty Publications

Estuaries are complex, dynamic ecosystems that play a critical role in supporting crucial economic industries, such as commercial fishing and tourism, and providing the resources necessary to sustain coastal communities. A range of anthropogenic environmental stressors are threatening the health of estuaries throughout the world. Traditional top-down single resource focused environmental regulatory approaches have proved inadequate to protect and restore estuarine systems. In recent years, scientific and legal academics, as well as policymakers, have called for more holistic participatory approaches to addressing environmental challenges. Drawing on the literature on ecosystem management, integrated water resources management, collaborative governance, and adaptive management, …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

PREMISE: Understanding the relationship between genetic structure and geography provides information about a species’ history and can be used for breeding and conservation goals. The North American prairie is interesting because of its recent origin and subsequent fragmentation. Silphium integrifolium, an iconic perennial American prairie wildflower, is targeted for domestication, having undergone a few generations of improvement. We present the first application of population genetic data in this species to address the following goals: (1) improve breeding by characterizing genetic structure and (2) identify the species geographic origin and potential targets and drivers of selection during range expansion. METHODS: We …

Global Climate Change is arguably one of the most important global crises of our times. Global Climate Change is the result of increasing global ambient temperatures around the world. These increased temperature changes have been impacting all aspects of human life and activity as wells as impacting all biological and physical systems of Earth. The primary cause of Global Climate Change are anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide and other Greenhouse Gases. Fossil fuel combustion is a primary source of these emissions. The initiation of anthropogenic Global Climate Change has been scientifically traced back to the Industrial Revolution. From the Industrial …

Clash Of Interests? Conflicting Perspectives Of The State And Border Communities On Smuggling In Nigeria, Akhigbe Allwell O. Jan 2021

Clash Of Interests? Conflicting Perspectives Of The State And Border Communities On Smuggling In Nigeria, Akhigbe Allwell O.

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

Smuggling has been a signature of African borders. The study takes a critical look at the issue of smuggling in the Imeko border community of Nigeria that is situated at the Benin border. It examines the perspectives of the state and the border communities and uses the Onion method of Conflict Analysis to determine the actual needs of both parties and how they could be met. While the government sees it as a crime that robs the state of its much-needed resources, the border communities consider smuggling to be legitimate trade relations with their kinsmen across the border as a …

Special Issue "Local- To Global-Scale Environmental Issues", Leslie A. Duram Jan 2021

Special Issue "Local- To Global-Scale Environmental Issues", Leslie A. Duram

Publications

Geography is inextricably linked to sustainability. From local communities to national citizens to global agreements, there is a complex interplay between natural and social processes. In unison, these interacting forces determine our future sustainability. Addressing global issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean pollution, or systemic environmental injustice feels overwhelming, so people frequently decide to take local actions to promote sustainability. Indeed, these individual or community activities, when multiplied across the globe, are often the most feasible way to affect change, particularly when national or international politics halt progress toward sustainability. This Special Issue explores the complex interplay between sustainability …

Assessing And Forecasting Chlorophyll Abundances In Minnesota Lake Using Remote Sensing And Statistical Approaches, Ben Von Korff

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Harmful algae blooms (HABs) can negatively impact water quality, lake aesthetics, and can harm human and animal health. However, monitoring for HABs is rare in Minnesota. Detecting blooms which can vary spatially and may only be present briefly is challenging, so expanding monitoring in Minnesota would require the use of new and cost efficient technologies. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were used for bloom mapping using RGB and near-infrared imagery. Real time monitoring was conducted in Bass Lake, in Faribault County, MN using trail cameras. Time series forecasting was conducted with high frequency chlorophyll-a data from a water quality sonde. Normalized …

Qtl Mapping Of Seedling Root Traits In Synthetic W7984 × Opata M85 Bread Wheat(Triticum Aestivum L.) Mapping Population, Harun Bektaş

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Root system architecture, as a complex trait, has gained attention due to climate change and abiotic stress pressure on crops. The incorporation of root traits in breeding objectives may enable new advances in climate-resilient crops. Here, the genetics of the seedling root system architecture in the Synthetic W7984 × Opata M85 Doubled Haploid mapping population was investigated. Three traits at the seedling stage and mature stage root and shoot biomass traits were mapped for quantitative trait loci (QTL) identification. A total of five different loci on chromosomes 1B, 5A, and 7D with major effects were identified for total root length, …

Salvaging The Utopia : Posthumanism, Feminism, And Anti-Patriarchal Language In Kathy Acker’S In Memoriam To Identity, Fe Lorraine Agustin Reyes Jan 2021

Salvaging The Utopia : Posthumanism, Feminism, And Anti-Patriarchal Language In Kathy Acker’S In Memoriam To Identity, Fe Lorraine Agustin Reyes

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis reads a posthuman feminist ethos, as theorized by Rosi Braidotti, within Kathy Acker’s In Memoriam to Identity. By recognizing the posthuman undercurrent of the text, my argument cuts against the conventional postmodern arguments traditionally associated with Acker’s work. I emphasize the novel’s recuperation of the French feminist theory écriture féminine, a 20th century postmodern method of thinking that sought to embody and empower the “woman” in language. However, my position gives pause to simply recognizing the implications of the text’s postmodern conventions. If left to a postmodern reading, Acker’s text runs the risk of succumbing to language’s patriarchal …

The Construction And Internal Validation Of A Model For The Effective Collaboration Of Distributed Agile Teams, Ernesto Custodio Jan 2021

The Construction And Internal Validation Of A Model For The Effective Collaboration Of Distributed Agile Teams, Ernesto Custodio

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Agile approaches to software development have increased steadily over the past decade. Agile processes emphasize iterative and collaborative discovery of requirements and solutions executed by self-organizing, cross-functional teams. Software development using distributed teams, including distributed sub-teams, fully dispersed teams, and partially dispersed teams, has also increased due to benefits such as access to global talent and faster delivery, among others.

However, most Agile approaches, models, and frameworks only address the needs of colocated teams. Distributed teams come with unique challenges when it comes to effective collaboration. The goal was to construct and validate internally a model for the effective collaboration …

Grid Reliability Through Clean Energy, Alexandra Klass, Joshua Macey, Shelley Welton, Hannah Jacobs Wiseman Jan 2021

Grid Reliability Through Clean Energy, Alexandra Klass, Joshua Macey, Shelley Welton, Hannah Jacobs Wiseman

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Energy policy is at a critical turning point. To counteract potentially catastrophic climate change, we must rapidly transition to clean energy. At the same time, we must ensure the reliability of an increasingly vulnerable electricity grid. In the wake of recent high-profile power failures, both policymakers and politicians have asserted that there is an inherent tension between the aims of clean energy and grid reliability. But continuing to rely on fossil fuels to avoid system outages will only exacerbate reliability challenges by contributing to increasingly extreme, climate-related weather events. These extremes will disrupt the power supply, with impacts rippling far …

The Impact Of North Pacific And North Atlantic Baroclinic Cyclones On Downstream Predictability, Adam Wayne Sisco Jan 2021

The Impact Of North Pacific And North Atlantic Baroclinic Cyclones On Downstream Predictability, Adam Wayne Sisco

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Baroclinic cyclogenesis can act as an impulsive disturbance along the midlatitude waveguide and promote the dispersion of Rossby waves, potentially impacting the predictability of the downstream midlatitude flow. Indeed, several studies have traced medium-range forecast errors and uncertainties to upstream cyclone development, especially when diabatic processes are involved in modifying the upper-tropospheric potential vorticity (PV) distribution. However, it remains unclear why some forecasts downstream of cyclogenesis are particularly uncertain while others are not. This study uses a 30-yr (1985–2014) sample of cool-season North Pacific and North Atlantic baroclinic cyclones and forecasts from the second-generation Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS) reforecast …

Invasive species are one of the greatest threats to biodiversity. Humans are one of the most pervasive vectors of invasive species spread which can be accelerated through different behaviors and pathways as a result of a lack of education and understanding. One of the most effective management efforts undertaken to fight invasive species spread and prevent further infestations is through education and advocacy. Currently, there are several educational resources dedicated to invasive species history, identification, and prevention. These resources range from school curriculums created for State School systems, to regional and national toolkits that contain lessons, identification resources, and activities …

Critical Media Literacy In Social Studies : A Case Study, Lauren Collet-Gildard Jan 2021

Critical Media Literacy In Social Studies : A Case Study, Lauren Collet-Gildard

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

There have been many efforts to address the importance of media literacy in schools, but little research has focused on critical media literacy (CML) in social studies curricula or classrooms. This is the first case study to examine the planning and implementation of a school wide CML lesson designed by teachers, and it traces this process from inspiration and collaborative conception of the lesson through its enactment within the classroom. In addition, this research provides unique insight into how teachers arrive at CML as a means of empowering students in the face of widespread disinformation and political polarization. In my …

"Folks Like Us" : Exploring State Education Policy In New York's Rural School Districts, Nicole Lennon Jan 2021

"Folks Like Us" : Exploring State Education Policy In New York's Rural School Districts, Nicole Lennon

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Diversity has been a major topic in education in recent years. However, often missing from the conversation is consideration of geographic diversity across urban, suburban, and rural school districts. Research shows that geographic place influences educational capacity, opportunities, and trajectories, as well as social life, cultural values, and individual identity. The policy process is influenced by dominant ideologies that tend to problematize rural places and favor the interests of metropolitan places. This metro-centric ideology may continue to influence educational policymaking in the United States today, as scholars have found policymakers often reuse similar urban-favored tools and solutions in the design …

The Sensitivity Of Convection To Boundary Layer Parameterization In Hurricanes Harvey And Irma 2017, Dylan Card Jan 2021

The Sensitivity Of Convection To Boundary Layer Parameterization In Hurricanes Harvey And Irma 2017, Dylan Card

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Tropical cyclones (TCs) pose a significant threat to life and property, and exhibit many severe weather hazards as they make landfall, such as storm surge, strong winds, flooding rains, and tornadoes. TC convection is associated with nearly all of these hazards, which can extend hundreds of kilometers inland; thus, understanding the characteristics and organization of convective cells is important to mitigating risk. Observational studies have noted that TC convection tends to organize downshear and that rotating thunderstorms tend to occur in the downshear-right quadrant of the TC. Modeling studies have also shown that convective cells tend to form upshear right …

Forensic entomology is the study of insects that colonize human/animal wounds and remains and their development for use in legal contexts. It has numerous facets and applications including: estimation of time since death; investigation of neglect/abuse of children and the elderly; and determination of the presence of toxins and drugs as a potential cause of death. In order for the discovered insects to be of forensic utility, accurate species identification is crucial. Current methodologies for species determination rely on the knowledge and expertise of an entomologist; exhaustive taxonomic keys; and access to adequate equipment and facilities; resources which are often …

Antebellum Black Climate Science: The Medical Geography And Emancipatory Politics Of James Mccune Smith And Martin Delany, Colin Fisher Jan 2021

Antebellum Black Climate Science: The Medical Geography And Emancipatory Politics Of James Mccune Smith And Martin Delany, Colin Fisher

History: Faculty Scholarship

This article argues that two prominent antebellum Black physicians—James McCune Smith and Martin Delany—developed competing scientific theories of nature’s impact on the human body in response to the climatic theories of the American Colonization Society, polygenist race scientists, and southern defenders of slavery. It further argues that the physicians’ divergent conclusions regarding nature’s agency played a significant role in underwriting arguably the most important and consequential political debate in antebellum Black America—namely, the dispute between integrationists who advocated remaining in the United States and fighting for equality and emigrationists who argued that America was so hopelessly racist that African Americans …

Challenging Bias Against Women Academics In Religion, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

In today’s world, people access knowledge instantaneously on Internet-connected devices such as laptops, smartphones, and smart televisions. We can ask Siri and Alexa any question imaginable while driving or cooking a meal. The source for this readily accessible information is a changing array of digital, tertiary knowledge-sharing platforms. The day-to-day decisions we make, along with our opinions and views of the world, are shaped by the knowledge we glean from these sources. Bias exists on these digital platforms and matters, especially to underrepresented and oppressed populations, such as women and people of color. This volume attends to bias in knowledge …
