As exemplified during the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) can deliver near real-time, population-level pathogen data to guide public health action. Its impact, however, hinges on timely, transparent, and context-specific communication to stakeholders, including health authorities, policymakers, scientists, clinicians, and the public. This review examines current WBS communication practices, identifies persistent challenges, and proposes strategies to enhance relevance. Key challenges include data complexity, lack of standardised communication frameworks, ethical and privacy concerns, and variable stakeholder capabilities. The strategic use of digital platforms, such as dashboards, reports, press releases, and social media, alongside traditional media, can broaden reach and aid interpretation. …

Contrariétés, Indocilités, Indisciplines : La Poésie Au Croisement Des Savoirs, Nathalie Dupont Sep 2025

Contrariétés, Indocilités, Indisciplines : La Poésie Au Croisement Des Savoirs, Nathalie Dupont

Faculty Journal Articles

The poetic works of Suzanne Doppelt and Véronique Vassiliou take shape from an intriguing combination of technical devices and knowledge usually attributed to extra-literary disciplines, ranging from science and technology to the arts, and from the occult to domestic ecology. With a clear propensity for encyclopedism, their interdisciplinary works—which in fact have everything to do with indiscipline—orchestrate a playful confrontation of divergent domains, bringing to light innovative objects of thought around which to articulate multiple leçons de choses (object lessons) about more or less proven theories, from ancient Greece to the extreme contemporary moment. As a …

Aedes Aegypti In The City Of Córdoba: Spatial Distribution And Habitat Suitability Drivers, Elisabet M. Benitez, Florencia Sangermano, Francisco F. Ludueña-Almeida, Walter R. Almirón, Elizabet L. Estallo

Geography

Background: According to the World Health Organization, dengue is among the top ten global health threats. The invasion of new sites by Aedes aegypti and their permanence depends on environmental characteristics of the site. Therefore, the objective was to understand the environmental characteristics that affect Ae. aegypti distribution in Córdoba city, Argentina. Methods: This evaluation was carried out through species distribution models, using maximum entropy modeling technique, incorporating a set of environmental variables known to influence the presence and suitability of Ae. aegypti habitats. The factors evaluated included both meteorological variables, such as minimum and maximum temperature and average precipitation, …

The Return Of Chinese Emigrants: Legal Barriers And Local Practices, Jiaqi M. Liu Sep 2025

The Return Of Chinese Emigrants: Legal Barriers And Local Practices, Jiaqi M. Liu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

While China has observed an increasing influx of foreign nationals, a notable phenomenon involves Chinese emigrants opting for return migration to reestablish themselves in their country of origin. The process of emigrants returning to China, referred to as “return and resettlement” (huiguo dingju 回国定居) in official terminology, however, is not automatic. Emigrant returnees must fulfill a set of selective and documentary criteria, implying that only economically affluent and duly documented migrants are permitted to resettle in China. Through a comprehensive review of national policies and an analysis of local practices in a diaspora hometown, this chapter argues that the hukou …

Item 3: Redlining, Housing Segregation, And Anti-Black Racism, Danielle Hodge Sep 2025

Item 3: Redlining, Housing Segregation, And Anti-Black Racism, Danielle Hodge

Danielle Hodge, Race, Communication, and Anti-Black Racism

This discussion activity explores the relationship between anti-Black racism, redlining, and housing segregation. Students are assigned three texts that introduce them to anti-Black racism as a theoretical framework, highlight the distinction between anti-Black racism and other forms of oppression, and describe how segregation informs racist voting practices. These texts inform their subsequent engagement with two videos (e.g., one from NPR’s Code Switch and a second from NowThis) that facilitate and guide an in-class discussion.

Item 2: Activity 1: Cultural Mapping Workshop: Jambi Districts, Salah D. Hassan

Salah D. Hassan, Global Citizenship: Culture and Climate Justice in Indonesia

As an introductory activity for this education abroad course on global citizenship, students will work in small groups of 3 or 4 with local partners (Jambi students and faculty) to explore the relationship between cultural places and the environment of Jambi by creating cultural maps of the districts of Jambi. This classroom activity aims to prepare students for their community service and site visits in Jambi. They will learn about the local geography, acquire knowledge of the diverse cultural environment, and gain an understanding about specific sites of environmental concern in this mid-size city in central Sumatra. Syllabus: Social Studies Curriculum And Methods In Secondary Education, John Shekitka

John Shekitka, Social Studies Curriculum and Methods in Secondary Education

This is a syllabus for a graduate-level or upper undergraduate course in preparing secondary social studies educators as part of a MAT program. Three weeks of the course specifically deal with civic engagement, and the remainder of the course contains a broader set of complimentary social science teacher skills. The assignments for the course center civic engagement as a central theme. The syllabus also includes a method for students to use ChatGPT or another AI tool ONCE, to experiment with the role of AI in becoming a secondary educator.

Item 4: Activity 3: Shakespeare For Civic Action, Molly Slavin Sep 2025

Item 4: Activity 3: Shakespeare For Civic Action, Molly Slavin

Molly Slavin, Shakespeare for Civic Action Course Syllabus (upper-level undergraduate course)

This standalone activity is tied to a discussion of Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story but could easily be adaptable for many different contexts. Students will take a walking tour of their surroundings immediately outside campus and compare what they see to Shakespeare’s Verona and the film’s Harlem, thinking about cities as civic spaces and what happens when the social contract falls apart. However, the activity is adaptable for other placed-based literary texts, or even social science courses focused on the city, as it includes suggested readings and questions for discussion.

A. Syllabus His 207 Comparative Twentieth Century South African And United States Civil Rights And Voting Rights Histories, Frankie Nicole Weaver

Frankie Nicole Weaver, Comparative Twentieth Century South African and United States Civil Rights and Voting Rights Histories

Originally shared as an in-person comparative upper-level undergraduate history course, this course was adapted for online, virtual use. It works well in either format; however, if you share it virtually, I strongly encourage at least one weekly synchronous class meeting and utilizing breakout rooms to promote discussion. Also, provide discussion questions and randomly enter breakout rooms to facilitate discussion --ensuring that engaging discussions occur. I recommend offering both in-person and virtual office hours, regardless.

Sociological Dichotomies Of Mława, Poland, Over Time: Misplaced Concreteness, Individual Triumph, Social Tragedy, Joseph Drew Sep 2025

Sociological Dichotomies Of Mława, Poland, Over Time: Misplaced Concreteness, Individual Triumph, Social Tragedy, Joseph Drew

Comparative Civilizations Review

For many years, I have been an active member of the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations and Editor-in-Chief of its journal, the Comparative Civilizations Review. Since the 1960s, I have also been a university administrator and a professor, globe-trotting to learn about societies near and far, their rises and falls. Yet even though I lived and worked in Prague, as president of a university, not far from the Polish border, I had never set foot in that country, notwithstanding that my paternal grandfather came from there.
