Electric Airplanes: Bridging The Technological And Regulatory Gap, Kyle Durch Apr 2021

Electric Airplanes: Bridging The Technological And Regulatory Gap, Kyle Durch

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Business success depends on two overarching factors: (1) filling a market niche, and (2) doing it better than the competition. Just such a market gap exists in aviation. Fuel prices rise over time, and the maintenance costs for aging aircraft contribute to skyrocketing costs for training pilots. While shifting pilot training to simulators and allowing the use of alternative types of aircraft to satisfy training requirements addresses some of the cost of aviation, the basic truth remains that flying is expensive and involves burning a large amount of fossil fuel. However, battery breakthroughs usher in a new reality, one which …

Clean Water For All: Examining Safe Drinking Water Act Violations Of Water Systems And Community Characteristics, Junghwan Bae Apr 2021

Clean Water For All: Examining Safe Drinking Water Act Violations Of Water Systems And Community Characteristics, Junghwan Bae

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Drinking water systems in the United States confront several challenges such as aging infrastructure, polluted source water, and fragmented systems. The burdens, however, are not equally distributed across the nation. Disadvantaged communities such as communities of color are disproportionately affected by drinking water-related problems.

This study focuses on drinking water quality violations and slow enforcement actions of Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) during 2016 to 2018. The EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) was used to obtain violation records and characteristics of community water systems. The data set in this study contains 21,845 community water systems. Based on the …

Creation Care As Caring For Human Beings: An Environmental Justice Case Study, Jeffrey S. Lamp, Ph.D., Kathryn J. Moder, Megan R. Munhoffen, Cade A. Rich, Nathan B. Von Atzigen Apr 2021

Creation Care As Caring For Human Beings: An Environmental Justice Case Study, Jeffrey S. Lamp, Ph.D., Kathryn J. Moder, Megan R. Munhoffen, Cade A. Rich, Nathan B. Von Atzigen

Research Symposium

Caring for God’s creation is a burgeoning area of interest among Christians in recent decades. In many Christian circles, however, caring for creation is not given high priority in rankings of the duties of Christian disciples in the world. This article will argue that caring for creation is a biblically mandated call for God’s people in the world and derives from the role of human beings as caretakers of creation, creation’s status as a recipient of God’s salvation in Christ, and the connection between human beings and the other-than-human creation. If creation care is understood as an act of healing …

The Amungme And The Environment: Environmental Justice History And Consumerism, Kole A. Dawson Apr 2021

The Amungme And The Environment: Environmental Justice History And Consumerism, Kole A. Dawson

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

The Amungme are one of hundreds of Papuan people groups who lived in the Indonesian province in New Guinea for thousands of years. This group subsisted in their environment by hunting, cultivation of small crops, and practicing pig husbandry. In the late 1960s, seeking foreign capital to boost the nation’s economy, the president of Indonesia signed a contract with Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold. Freeport began mining in the early 1970s, eventually opening one of the world’s largest gold mines. Excavating sacred Amungme sites, Freeport’s massive pollution to the land and water destroyed the indigenous people’s environment both spiritually and …

Uranium Natives: Mining For The Cold War, Angela M. Wood Apr 2021

Uranium Natives: Mining For The Cold War, Angela M. Wood

Phi Alpha Theta Pacific Northwest Regional Conference

Abstract: During the Cold War the quest for plutonium to produce more bombs and beat the Soviets was the mission for the Department of Energy. There was constant fear of an atomic bomb being dropped on the U.S. The search for uranium was on. People who owned mines, however, were more concerned with production than they were with safety. Unfortunately, because most of the uranium was on Indian lands, one of the biggest casualties of the race were the native communities who especially didn't understand the nature of what they were working with. Due to their traditional relationship with the …

Civic Agriculture In Review: Then, Now, And Future Directions, Allison Kaika, Alexis Racelis Apr 2021

Civic Agriculture In Review: Then, Now, And Future Directions, Allison Kaika, Alexis Racelis

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

"Civic agriculture," a term first coined by rural sociologist Thomas Lyson, refers to forms of agriculture that occur on a local level, from production to consumption, and are linked to a community's social and economic development. Sixteen years since its original articulation, the term "civic agriculture" has taken on greater significance in research, political activism, and community organizing. Grown from the roots of civic community theory, civic agriculture functions as a new branch of civic community theory that is ripe for theorization. In revisiting the foundations of the term, this review paper seeks to consolidate current and future research in …

Arlington Community Garden: The Benefits Of Community Gardens And Keeping Them Sustainable, Laurel Dalton Apr 2021

Arlington Community Garden: The Benefits Of Community Gardens And Keeping Them Sustainable, Laurel Dalton

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Environmental Center Leadership Program Project

In a project for the Environmental Center Leadership Program, Laurel Dalton investigates the importance of community gardens, the issues they often face, and some possible solutions which were utilized for the benefit of the Arlington Community Garden at the Tree Hill Nature Center. Community gardens are a valuable resource to build community, allow participants to connect to nature, and help alleviate food insecurity. The foremost issues for the sustainability of community gardens are the lack of a sufficient, continuous workforce of paid workers and volunteers, and a lack of funding. To alleviate this issue for …
