Economic Change, The Death Of The Coal Industry, And Migration Intentions In Rural Colorado, Usa, Adam Mayer Apr 2021

Economic Change, The Death Of The Coal Industry, And Migration Intentions In Rural Colorado, Usa, Adam Mayer

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Significant portions of the rural U.S. are struggling with out-migration and subsequent population loss. The U.S. energy system is also undergoing a very fundamental transition with the marked decline of the coal industry and the growth of natural gas and renewables. Although the collapse of coal holds many benefits in terms of public health and environmental quality, it could exacerbate problems of population loss. In this analysis, we evaluate how the pending collapse of the coal industry in western Colorado could influence migration intentions using survey data. We find that the decline of the coal industry likely has no substantive …

A Gendered Environmental Justice Perspective Of Tiger Reintroductions To Sariska Tiger Reserve, Elena C. Rubino, Kalli F. Doubleday Apr 2021

A Gendered Environmental Justice Perspective Of Tiger Reintroductions To Sariska Tiger Reserve, Elena C. Rubino, Kalli F. Doubleday

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The reintroduction of Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris) to the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, India, has resulted in perceived increases of human-wildlife conflict for local villagers. Because previous evidence from other settings suggests that women may experience human-wildlife conflict differently than men, this research employed a comprehensive environmental justice framework to explore how women have been uniquely impacted by tiger reintroductions. Findings from focus group discussions with villagers suggest that women bear greater burdens from increased tiger presence, yet these costs are not typically acknowledged by men, and women do not feel that their perspectives were considered …

A Garden In The Jungle, Tom Harlovic Apr 2021

A Garden In The Jungle, Tom Harlovic

Philosophy

Climate change, urbanization, and food insecurity are three interconnected phenomena shaping the world. Such multi-faceted issues require a similarly comprehensive solution. Urban gardening is an emerging practice that fosters both environmental sustainability and social equity. To understand why it is an effective solution, urban gardening must be connected to the issues at hand. First, while the city has long been posited as separate from nature, it can be alternately described as an inherently natural place, and must be demonstrated as such for the purposes of this paper. From here, by analyzing historical examples, poverty in the inner-city can be connected …

Incorporating Environmental Justice Into Youth Education, Morgan F. Prittie Apr 2021

Incorporating Environmental Justice Into Youth Education, Morgan F. Prittie

Community Engagement Student Work

Social Justice is a concept which is often glossed over or excluded from student education, particularly the issues associated with Environmental Justice. Discrimination, oppression, and poor environmental practices all coalesce into dangerously impactful issues, which can be combated by further education and exposure. This project seeks to spread awareness of Environmental Justice issues, provide educators with the tools to implement social justice education, and express the importance of such exposure to students. This interdisciplinary project utilizes the facilitation of a workshop with lessons, activities, and opportunities for participants to engage in discussions. The goal of the workshop was to describe …

Activating Vacant Spaces: An Art And Environmental Justice Project - Assessment In Cleveland, Ohio’S Slavic Village Neighborhood, Patrick Connolly

Community Engagement Student Work

The overdevelopment of cities has caused residents to suffer from environmental and economic harm. Situated near a steel mill and a highway, and with less than 20% tree canopy, the Slavic Village neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio is a community that may be in need of environmental justice. The movement to introduce green elements to urban environments is growing, and there are clear economic benefits to greening urban areas. Using art as a tool for education, this project proposes a series of six sustainable art installations that attempt to teach the community about environmental issues. Using this art project as a …

An Examination Of Sustainable Marketing And Fan Engagment Within The Sports Industry, Caroline Meizen

Honors Projects in Marketing

The goal of this research-based thesis was to uncover the prominent methods of connecting with fans and recognizing preferences of marketing messages to see if sustainable marketing will increase engagement on game-day or have a neutral impact. Research was conducted through an analysis of case studies from the perspective of teams, athletes, and venues. A survey was distributed to analyze fan behaviors related to the importance of sustainability, engagement preferences with marketing messages and overall impact of the sports space as a platform for sustainable messages. Survey results of sports fans showed that the connection with their favorite teams and …

Community Engagement Student Work

This project was conducted to examine the environmental social justice issues in the United States and how they are linked to health issues in younger children in low-income communities and people of color through the lenses of multiple theoretical frameworks. The workshop was focused on educating youth from other communities of people of color, providing them resources so that while bridging the cultural gaps they will become allies. The targeted audience was Asian-Indian youth of Maharashtrian communities across the country. The youth of mixed age group and first and second generations of immigrants from those communities participated in the workshop. …

Policing And The Illusion Of Public Input, Tony Cheng Apr 2021

Policing And The Illusion Of Public Input, Tony Cheng

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Decades of scholarly, policy, and financial investment in police-community reform have coalesced around fulfilling the elusive promise of increasing public input in policing. And yet, policing in America today is currently undergoing a crisis in public legitimacy. By continuing to understand the gaps between the promise and practice of community initiatives as revealing police’s operational shortcomings rather than organizational priorities, we fail to sufficiently theorize and account for the core problem of police-community relations. This book argues that the core problem is an enduring illusion of public input in policing. The illusion exists because police shape the very channels through …

Central American Rivers As Sites Of Colonial Contestation, Adrian Taylor Kane Apr 2021

Central American Rivers As Sites Of Colonial Contestation, Adrian Taylor Kane

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the introduction to Troubled Waters: Rivers in Latin American Imagination (2013), Elizabeth Pettinaroli and Ana María Mutis have argued that rivers in Latin American literature constitute a “locus for the literary exploration of questions of power, identity, resistance, and discontent.” Many works of testimonial literature and literature of resistance written during and about the Central American civil wars of the 1970s and 1980s as a means of denouncing and resisting various forms of oppression would support their thesis. In the 2004 film Innocent Voices, directed by Luis Mandoki, Mario Bencastro’s 1997 story “Había una vez un río,” and …

Terra Nullius Or Terra Incognita? Documenting Land Use Practices In South Kensington, Philadephia, Alexander Olson

Geography, Geology, and the Environment

Greenspaces offer many environmental and social benefits for urban residents. The benefits that urban greenspaces provide improve neighborhood quality of life, and environmental justice concerns arise when they are distributed unevenly across a city’s urban fabric. In this study we analyze the distribution of formal and informal greenspaces (IGS) across the Olde and South Kensington neighborhoods of Philadelphia using high resolution aerial imagery. By using widely accessible tools like Google Earth Pro, we hope to provide a method replicable for community groups and others interested in documenting urban environmental conditions in their neighborhoods. IGS offer increased greenspace access, improving neighborhood …

Illegal Discharge: Exploring The History Of The Criminal Enforcement Of The U.S. Clean Water Act, Dr. Joshua Ozymy, Dr. Melisssa L. Jarrell

Fordham Environmental Law Review

The criminal prosecution of defendants that violate federal clean water laws has been ongoing for roughly four decades. Yet, we continue to have a poor understanding of how federal prosecutors use the U.S. Clean Water Act (“CWA”) to charge and prosecute criminals and the outcomes of those prosecutions. We use content analysis to analyze 2,588 federal criminal prosecution case summaries, 1983-2019, to gain a better historical understanding of how the CWA has been used as a prosecutorial tool, to bring out the major themes in the prosecutions, and quantify sentencing outcomes. Findings from the 828 CWA prosecutions undertaken during this …

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

In 2015, the United Nations Member States, including the United States, unanimously approved 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. The SDGs are nonbinding; each nation is to implement them based on its own priorities and circumstances. This Article argues that the SDGs are a critical normative framework the United States should use to improve human quality of life, freedom, and opportunity by integrating economic and social development with environmental protection. It collects the recommendations of 22 experts on steps that the Biden-Harris Administration should take now to advance each of the SDGs. It is part of …
