Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects

Aim: Describe nursing research that has studied prone positioning in patients with COVID-19 and the outcomes.

Background: Prone positioning has been a well-studied intervention in patients experiencing acute respiratory distress syndrome. The intervention has proven to provide beneficial physiological effects.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases. Key search terms were: Covid-19, Coronavirus, outcomes, and prone position. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were outlined and the articles examined for each. Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) integrative approach was used to conduct this review.

Discussion: This review evaluated the different criteria physicians utilized in their decision to implement prone …

"All For The Family:" A Case Study On The Migration Of Philippine Educated Nurses To Ontario Through The Live-In Caregiver Program, Oluwabukola Oladunni Salami

Dissertations

Despite evidence that suggests that nurses migrate to Ontario through the Live-in Caregiver Program, no research has been conducted on this group of nurses in Ontario. This study addresses that gap utilizing the transnational feminist concept of "global care chains" in a single holistic case study design to explore the experience of nurses who migrate to Ontario through the Live-in Caregiver Program (2001-2011), and examine the diverse perspectives of stakeholders on issues of rights and obligations of these nurses. Fifteen live-in caregivers and nine policy stakeholders were interviewed, and an analysis undertaken of immigration and nursing policy documents. Findings indicate …

Current Progress And Future Directions For Theory And Research On Savoring, Fred Bryant Dec 2021

Current Progress And Future Directions For Theory And Research On Savoring, Fred Bryant

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

As research on savoring has increased dramatically since publication of the book Savoring: A New Model of Positive Experience (Bryant and Veroff, 2007), savoring has gradually become a core concept in positive psychology. I begin by reviewing the evolution of this concept, the development of instruments for assessing savoring ability and savoring strategies, and the wide range of applications of savoring in the psychosocial and health sciences. I then consider important directions for future theory and research. To advance our understanding of how naturalistic savoring unfolds over time, future work should integrate the perceptual judgments involved in not only the …

Somatic mutations are rare in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (pAML), indicating that alternate strategies are needed to identify targetable dependencies. We performed the first enhancer mapping of pAML in 22 patient samples. Generally, pAML samples were distinct from adult AML samples, and MLL (KMT2A)-rearranged samples were also distinct from non-KMT2A-rearranged samples. Focusing specifically on superenhancers (SEs), we identified SEs associated with many known leukemia regulators. The retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARA) gene was differentially regulated in our cohort, and a RARA-associated SE was detected in 64% of the study cohort across all cytogenetic and molecular subtypes tested. RARA SE+ pAML …

Effects Of Tendon Viscoelasticity On The Distribution Of Forces Across Sutures In A Model Tendon-To-Bone Repair, Yuxuan Huang Dec 2021

Effects Of Tendon Viscoelasticity On The Distribution Of Forces Across Sutures In A Model Tendon-To-Bone Repair, Yuxuan Huang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Tears to the rotator cuff often require surgical repair. These repairs often culminate in re-tearing when sutures break through the tendon in the weeks following repair. Numerous studies have been performed to identify suturing strategies that reduce this risk by balancing forces across sutures. However, the structural engineering basis for these approaches is still emerging, and the effects of tendon mechanics on load balancing is still unclear. Specifically, the effects of the viscoelastic nature of tendon on load sharing have not been established. With the aim of providing insight into this problem, this thesis studies how tendon viscoelasticity, tendon stiffness, …

Inhibition Of Nadph Oxidase Blocks Netosis And Reduces Thrombosis In Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia, Halina H L Leung, Jose Perdomo, Zohra Ahmadi, Feng Yan, Steven E. Mckenzie, Beng H Chong Dec 2021

Inhibition Of Nadph Oxidase Blocks Netosis And Reduces Thrombosis In Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia, Halina H L Leung, Jose Perdomo, Zohra Ahmadi, Feng Yan, Steven E. Mckenzie, Beng H Chong

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is associated with severe and potentially lethal thrombotic complications. NETosis was recently shown to be an important driver of thrombosis in HIT. We investigated the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase 2 (NOX2) and their contributions to thrombus development in HIT. We showed that neutrophil activation by HIT immune complexes induced ROS-dependent NETosis. Analysis of thrombi formed in a microfluidics system showed ROS production in both platelets and neutrophils, and abundant neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and ROS distributed throughout the clot. Neutrophil-targeted ROS inhibition was sufficient to block HIT-induced NETosis …

The G7 Summit 2021: Time For Our World Leaders To Step Up To The Challenge Of Anti-Microbial Resistance, Lt Joshi

Peninsula Dental School

In June 2021, I wrote a strongly worded opinion piece published in the New Statesman about the G7 Summit and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) [1]. The piece highlighted that AMR should be addressed in the G7 Summit agenda and that our world leaders must recognize that research and investment into feasible solutions are urgently needed. This personal view adds to that original article. The G7 Summit took place in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, UK on the 11–13 June 2021 and the UK took Presidency of the G7 group of nations [2]. The G7 comprises seven member countries, namely the UK, the USA, …

Knowledge Organization System Of Visual Art Resources In West Bengal:A Study, Sudipta Shee Dec 2021

Knowledge Organization System Of Visual Art Resources In West Bengal:A Study, Sudipta Shee

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract: Visual art resource collections specially art works like, painting, sculpture, installation art form are totally ignored for retrieving this kind of information sources. The main concept of visual art resource is visual form and esthetic value of non textual content. They kept in museums and art galleries. West Bengal is a cultural hub of visual art resources. There are many art museum and art gallery which preserves art resources. Transforming visual code into written code and visual information into textual description is very challenging work. Content of painting, sculpture or installation arts are significant challenges to concept-based indexing. The …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The study provides bibliographic reference sources on the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on education and libraries around the world. Paucity of reference materials on this contemporary topic prompted the compilation of the bibliography thereby fill a crucial gap in LIS bibliographic literature. This enumerative bibliography is the researcher’s effort to provide a single-point reference materials to aid researchers and information seekers to easily find relevant and current literature on the topic. The bibliography puts together sources retrieved from the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s library databases: EBSCOhost, Emerald Insight, Google Scholar, Sabinet, and WorldCat and Google.com To optimise the search results, Boolean …

In 1870, a few Swedes led by Dr. William A. Henschen and his brother Esaias settled on Henry S. Sanford’s lands lying on the south shore of Lake Monroe. Other Swedes were not long in following them to central Florida. Sanford, in need of labor for the development of his new town and the care of his groves, employed Henschen as his agent to return to Sweden to recruit immigrants. In May 1871, Henschen returned with the first of two groups of Swedes. Many of their countrymen, hearing of the Swedish colony at New Uppsala near Sanford, came and established …

Spanish Sanctuary: Fugitives In Florida, 1687-1790, Jane Landers Dec 2021

Spanish Sanctuary: Fugitives In Florida, 1687-1790, Jane Landers

Florida Historical Quarterly

Historians of slavery in colonial North America have frequently alluded to the lure of Spanish Florida for slave runaways from the English colonies of South Carolina and Georgia, and contemporary slave owners complained bitterly of the sanctuary provided in St. Augustine. They repeatedly charged the Spanish with deliberate provocation, if not outright theft. Nonetheless, few historians have addressed these issues from the perspective of Spanish Florida. The Spanish policy regarding fugitive slaves in Florida developed in an ad hoc fashion and changed over time to suit the shifting military, economic, and diplomatic interests of the colony, as well as the …

Survival Of A Frontier Presidio: St. Augustine And The Subsidy And Private Contract Systems, 1680-1702, William R. Gillaspie

Florida Historical Quarterly

The last two decades of the seventeenth century were critical years in determining the eighteenth-century destiny of the entire breadth of the Spanish borderlands in North America. Overshadowing the outcome of the international rivalry over the continent were three changing tenets in international law during the last third of the seventeenth century. The first was Spain’s acceptance of “freedom of the seas” in place of mare clausum (closed sea) whereby she had sought exclusivism of the waters adjacent to its territorial holdings. Another changing tenet, to Spain’s advantage, was the European abandonment of “no peace beyond the line” (of demarcation) …

New Light On Gálvez's First Attempt To Attack Pensacola, Everett C. Wilkie Dec 2021

New Light On Gálvez's First Attempt To Attack Pensacola, Everett C. Wilkie

Florida Historical Quarterly

Bernardo de Gálvez’s proposed siege of Pensacola, Florida, in 1780 started inauspiciously when his fleet was overtaken by an October hurricane that seriously compromised prospects for an assault that year on the British garrison. Concrete information about the hurricane’s destruction is, however, sketchy concerning those ships that returned to Havana. The contemporary reports that are known are fairly brief and contain little or no specific information about the damage that befell the fleet as a result of the storm.

Hillsborough County (1850): A Community In The South Florida Flatwoods, John Solomon Otto Dec 2021

Hillsborough County (1850): A Community In The South Florida Flatwoods, John Solomon Otto

Florida Historical Quarterly

Historians of the Old South have traditionally searched for generalizations that might hold true for the entire region. Despite their attempts at regional generalization, they have used sources that come largely from the plantation South— the tidal, riverain, and Piedmont areas of the Lower South, where cash crop plantations predominated. Wealthy planters who owned many slaves and who grew cash crops such as cotton, tobacco, rice, or sugar were far more likely to leave a written legacy than small farmers who owned no slaves and grew few if any cash crops. Moreover, visitors who penned travelogues describing conditions in the …

T. Gilbert Pearson: Young Ornithologist In Florida, Oliver H. Orr

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the introduction to T. Gilbert Pearson’s autobiography, Adventures in Bird Protection, Frank M. Chapman praised Pearson as the “leading bird conserver of his generation,” the person who, more than any other, must be credited with having “secured legal rights for Citizen Bird.“
