The Qualitative Report
Writing is one of the most difficult skills in language learning, particularly in learning English as a foreign language. The purposes of this qualitative study were to describe student teachers’ challenges in composing argumentative writing and to explain how they encountered those challenges at one public university teacher-training program in Jambi, Indonesia. The theoretical framework of cultural capital was used to guide the study while the data were collected through demographic profiles and semi-structured in-depth interviews with student teachers. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we only had access to invite 12 students to participate in our study—they were six male …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Depending on the theoretical perspective taken (e.g., biological, evolutionary, relationships science, individual differences), different factors can promote or predict infidelity. While each factor may independently contribute to infidelity, it is likely that the occurrence of infidelity is contingent on a multitude of factors.

Mitochondrial superoxide (O2.−) production is implicated in aging, neurodegenerative disease, and most recently epilepsy. Yet the specific contribution of neuronal O2.− to these phenomena is unclear. Here, we selectively deleted superoxide dismutase-2 (SOD2) in neuronal basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor (NEX)-expressing cells restricting deletion to a subset of excitatory principle neurons primarily in the forebrain (cortex and hippocampus). This resulted in nSOD2 KO mice that lived into adulthood (2-3 months) with epilepsy, selective loss of neurons, metabolic rewiring and a marked mitohormetic gene response. Surprisingly, expression of an astrocytic gene, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was significantly increased relative …

Objective: A diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) needs assessment was conducted at a health sciences library. The objectives were to (1) quantitatively assess patrons’ attitudes towards the existing DEI climate in the library and (2) qualitatively identify contextual factors influencing patrons’ perceptions. The purpose was to better understand patrons’ views of the DEI climate in order to identify potential gaps, strengths, and areas of improvement within the library.
Population: The assessment was led by a DEI Team at the University of Florida’s Health Science Center Libraries (HSCL). HSCL serves the university’s six health science colleges from two sites, Gainesville and …
Cultivating Critical Consciousness Through Digital Video Inquiry, Candance Doerr-Stevens, Melissa L. Gibson
Cultivating Critical Consciousness Through Digital Video Inquiry, Candance Doerr-Stevens, Melissa L. Gibson
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
As political participation across the globe grows increasingly contentious and accusations of "fake news" and "post-truth" politics rise, the how, where, and why of civic learning in schools are called into question. In contrast, multimodal practices such as digital video production continue to promote youth engagement and deliberation of social issues through dialogue, crowd-sourcing, and relationships. Herein we examine the classroom-based approaches to digital video inquiry as a problem-posing antidote to traditional banking approaches to civic education. To forward this claim, we describe 2 classroom uses of digital video production for critical social inquiry. In both cases, digital video inquiry …
Chaplaincy For The Prisoners And The Penitentiary System In Ukraine (1991-2021), Valentyna Kuryliak, Ivan Ostashchuk, Mariia Ovchar
Chaplaincy For The Prisoners And The Penitentiary System In Ukraine (1991-2021), Valentyna Kuryliak, Ivan Ostashchuk, Mariia Ovchar
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This article examines the quality of work of religious organizations in places of deprivation of liberty, as well as their interaction with the penitentiary service of Ukraine. It was revealed that the chaplaincy ministry occupies an important place in the Christian churches of Ukraine. In the early 1990s, ministry in Ukrainian prisons was allowed, but most of the churches were at the stage of survival, so they were not able to carry out active work in prisons. At the legislative level, prisoners have ensured freedom of religion, and the penitentiary service was obliged to provide access to representatives of each …
Sacrality In Modern Ukrainian Poetics: Metamorphoses Of Values, Iryna Lazorevych
Sacrality In Modern Ukrainian Poetics: Metamorphoses Of Values, Iryna Lazorevych
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This is a study of the influence of religious sacrality on modern Ukrainian literature, particularly poetry, analyzing those sacred meanings that the current Ukrainian mentality actively uses. So far, it eclectically synthesizes the ideological impulses of traditional Christian religiosity (which even in the times of Communism retained its natural strength, especially in the Western regions of Ukraine), and elements of Soviet ideologemes and pragmatism of the modern transitional period. At the same time, it uses certain inclinations to new communication with sacred, which is felt by some of the important creators of modern Ukrainian culture. In this article, the author …
Identity Before Production: An Analysis Of Female Asian Representation Within Screenwriting, Kim Larkin
Identity Before Production: An Analysis Of Female Asian Representation Within Screenwriting, Kim Larkin
Postgraduate
This thesis investigates how representation and self-representation are constructed in screenplays. Film scholarship has primarily focused on the constructions of identities by examining the exhibited film product. The screenplay, which forms the foundation of the film text, is rarely examined for its impact on issues of representation and self-representation. Nelmes and Selbo’s ‘Women Screenwriters: An International Guide’ only addresses representation twice and does not reference self-representation within its 900 pages (Nelmes & Selbo, 2015).
Feminist film criticism of cinema has been heavily critical of the patriarchal male gaze in response to positioning women within film. The works of De Lauretis …

Mordor En El Caribe: Releyendo The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao (2007) Desde El Afrofuturismo, Juan A. Suárez Ontaneda
Alambique.
A Part Le Bonheur, Il N’Y A Rien D’Essentiel: The Transnational Narrative Model In Maryse Condé’S Desirada, Eliana Vāgālāu
A Part Le Bonheur, Il N’Y A Rien D’Essentiel: The Transnational Narrative Model In Maryse Condé’S Desirada, Eliana Vāgālāu
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The chapter contends that Maryse Condé’s novel Desirada has been repeatedly read as an identity quest novel, since the narrative impulse is determined by the protagonist’s search for her father’s identity. It argues, however, that Condé goes one step further by entirely subverting the identity quest narrative and presenting us with an excess, the production of fiction, which becomes something entirely different: a quest for an aesthetic truth rather than a filially determined identity. As such, by presenting us with a pastiche of the identity quest model, Condé’s transnationalism moves from minor to major, as her critique aims to dismantle …

Meals In The Melting-Pot: Immigration And Dietary Change In Diversifying Cities, Nicola Frances Rule, Colin Charles Dring, Thomas F. Thornton
Faculty, Staff, and Students
Changes in diets and food practices have implications for personal and planetary health. As these implications have become more apparent, dietary change interventions that seek to promote healthy and sustainable transitions have proliferated, and the processes and drivers of dietary change have come under increasing scrutiny. In particular, dietary acculturation has been recognised as a driver of dietary change in the context of immigration to expanding, cosmopolitan cities. However, research has largely focused on changes in the diets of immigrants and ethnic minorities. In contrast, this study contributes to our understanding of the process of dietary acculturation among the largest …

Factors Affecting The Students’ Re-Use Of The Electronic Learning System (Els), Reynaldo Bautista Jr., Luz Suplico Jeong, Carlo Saavedra, Joseph Sy-Changco
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged higher education worldwide. From face-to-face sessions between teachers and students, teaching and learning have to be done online to allow students to continue learning while preventing the spread of this infectious disease. Faced with a wide range of electronic learning systems (ELS) to choose from, this study examined the factors that could affect the students’ intent to re-use the ELS. There were 135 college students in a private university in Manila, Philippines, and 177 college students from a public university in Macau, China, who were surveyed to find out the factors that would influence their …

Towards Satu Bangsa : A Reevaluation Of The Race-Based Narrative And Its Impact On Chinese Communities In Malaysia, Chun Lean Lim
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Pakatan Harapan has terminated Barisan Nasional’s 61-year rule in Malaysia through the ballot box in the 2018 14th General Election (GE14) of Malaysia. The regime change did not happen overnight; it resulted from (a) the democratization progress in Malaysia over decades, (b) the exposure of corruption and crime related to top tier government officials, and (c) the changing political landscape of Malay political parties. Criticism from the people and its coalition and party overwhelmed Najib Razak and Barisan Nasional. On the other hand, Pakatan Harapan successfully incorporated all the opposition voices to vote against Najib’s regime, but the opposition front, …

Critically Analyzing The Online Classroom: Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, And The Pedagogy They Produce, J.D. Swerzenski
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Working from the crossroads of critical pedagogy and software studies, this study analyzes the means by which teaching technologies—in particular the popular learning management systems (LMS) Blackboard, Moodle, and Canvas—support a transmission model of education at the expense of critical learning goals. I assess the effect of LMSs on critical aims via four key critical pedagogy concepts: the banking system, student/teacher contradiction, dialogue, and problem-posing. From software studies, I employ the notion of affordances—what program functions are and are not made available to users—to observe how LMSs naturalize the transmission model. Rather than present a deterministic look at teaching technology, …

Subcolloquial Mesurative Phraseological Units In The Culture Of The Peoples Of The World, Nodirjon Bakhromalievich Otaqulov
Scientific reports of Bukhara State University
Introduction. This article examines the use of subcolloquial mesurative phraseological units in the French, Uzbek and Russian languages from the point of view of reflecting in them the relationship between language and cultural semantics. Its purpose is to determine the similarities and differences between subcolloquial mesurative phraseological units, taking into account the main symbolic meanings of numbers in world culture. The article examines the subcolloquial mesurative units in French, Uzbek and Russian, their place in the linguistic picture of the world, as well as their use in proverbs, sayings and phraseological units. Various points of view of scientists-linguists are considered, …
Against Discourse: Why Eliminating Racial Disparities Requires Radical Politics, Not More Discussion, Robert Weber
Against Discourse: Why Eliminating Racial Disparities Requires Radical Politics, Not More Discussion, Robert Weber
Georgia State University Law Review
Racial disparity discourse is one of the main modalities through which we discuss and experience race and racism in the United States today—in discussions with colleagues and friends, in scholarly work, on cable news, on social media, and in lecture halls. Despite its ubiquity, racial disparity discourse is under-theorized: what, exactly, is its intended purpose? This Essay argues that most discussion about racial disparities is predicated on the faulty premise—grounded in the Habermasian concepts of discourse and communicative rationality—that antiracists will convince their interlocutors by engaging in a practice of rationalistic discourse among participants who share the objective and expectation …
On The Four Forms Of Contemporary Cultural Criticism, Minghua Xiao
On The Four Forms Of Contemporary Cultural Criticism, Minghua Xiao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the last 30 years, cultural criticism emerged in studies of literature and art thanks to changes in social and cultural context. Some scholars are appealed to interpretative criticism as a result of epistemological interest in the rising popular culture. Some are stimulated to practice cultural criticism by the anxiety about the change of intellectual identity. Some are dedicated to cultural criticism in order to break through disciplinary restraints or to fulfil intellectuals’ role of responding to public concerns. These forms of cultural criticism can be respectively dubbed as “cultural criticism as popular literary criticism,” “cultural criticism as cultural research,” …
Stages Of Legal Discourse Development In Linguistics, Nuriya Jumaniyozova
Stages Of Legal Discourse Development In Linguistics, Nuriya Jumaniyozova
Philology Matters
Although the term ‘discourse’ has been defined by many researchers in linguistics, it still remains an abstract concept. This is because there are different views on discourse and text, discourse and language, and discourse and speech oppositions, and the study of this problem in linguistics is of a particular importance. Besides linguistics, ‘discourse’ is also studied in sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and other fields as the primary research object of social theories. And this requires an interdisciplinary study of this issue. Today discourse is considered in the framework of Forensic linguistics, which connects jurisprudence and linguistics, and the disclosure of the …
Cultural Studies And The Intellectual Genealogy Of Chinese American Scholars: The Controversies On Lydia H. Liu's Study Of The “National Character” And Beyond, Shi Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Lydia H. Liu's criticism on Lu Xun's discourse of national character is not an isolated case in literary criticism, but part of the theoretical nomadism of “translated modernity.” Be it Lydia H. Liu’s conceptualization of “translated modernity,” Leo Ou-fan Lee’s “pursuit of modernity,” David Der-wei Wang’s “repressed modernity,” Rey Chow’s “repressed visuality” or Shu-mei Shih’s “lure of the modern,” the theoretical purport of theirs tends to examine the complex relationship between Chinese literature and politics in the 20th century from the perspective of power criticism, and reflect on the “repressive regime” behind the modern nation-state. The formation of this knowledge …

Interdisciplinary Boundary Experiences: Learning Through Conversations, Laura Ferrarello, Catherine Dormor
Learn X Design Conference Series
The complexity of many social systems and organisations together with the challenges the world is facing in terms of climate and health demands imagining new ideas and approaches. Interdisciplinary collaboration offers good examples of strategies and practices better able to cope with this complexity, but they are reliant upon the dynamics within collaborations and good integration of perspectives. This paper considers an example of interdisciplinary collaboration aimed at growing mindsets capable of dialoguing with other disciplines through the boundary learning. Based within the Royal College of Art Master in Research, we stimulated a learning experience that leveraged the cyclical dynamics …

Transformative Teaching Practice Through A Design Thinking Approach In Social Settings: A Reflection On The Delivery Of A Design Research Methods Module In A Graphic Design Programme At Undergraduate Level, Janey Deng Klingelfuss, Markus Klingelfuss
Learn X Design Conference Series
An acknowledgement of the transformative nature of education; one in which design educators are seen as active agents of change, is not new. However, acknowledging the importance of such a phenomenon is fundamental to exploring academic practice in design education. In relation to social contexts and transformations, meeting stakeholders’ needs is increasingly significant to how universities set out graduate options and outcomes for students. Higher education is expected to play a key role in developing the multiple skills and capacities of design and creative subject students for future work in the creative and cultural industries (Ashton, 2017; Naudin, 2013; Nesta, …
Problems In The Reform Of Design Teaching And Solutions :Taking Shandong University Of Art And Design As An Example, Lei Sun
Learn X Design Conference Series
This article takes the teaching reform of the undergraduate program in Shandong University of Art & Design as a case for study. Through surveys with students, teachers, and employers, it finds out three core challenges faced by the design majors, and proposes three correspondent solutions, namely to use “aptitude-based teaching to cultivate talents”, “learning-assisted teaching to classify the teaching system”, and “learning-promoted teaching to innovate lectures”, which lead to a philosophy for the reform, where student’s development is regarded as the very foundation of all learning, and their achievement as the orientation of all work. This article analyses the common …

Development And Implementation Of A Bilingual Counseling Certificate Program, Claudia Interiano-Shiverdecker, Derek Robertson, Elias Zambrano, Ashley Morgan, Jacqueline Cantu Contreras
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
The ever-growing population of Spanish-speakers in the United States increases the need for counselors to provide services in languages other than English. Yet, very few counselor education programs offer training specifically aimed at providing bilingual counseling services. The authors introduce important elements of bilingual counseling training and describe the implementation of these features into a certificate designed to train competent, bilingual clinical mental health and school counselors. Implications for counseling pedagogy, practice, supervision, and research are discussed.

Environmental Sustainability And The Framing Of Formula E Motor Racing In Uk And Flemish Newspapers, Timothy Robeers
Journal of Motorsport Culture & History
Developed in cooperation with the Fédération Internationale d’Automobile (FIA) as motor sport’s governing body, the fully electric racing series Formula E represents itself as a driving force in making the motor sport and automotive industries more environmentally sustainable (hereafter: ES). However, the question remains whether such ES efforts are picked up on by the media, and more specifically newspapers that are still considered a benchmark for in-depth and reflective journalism, despite a dramatic rise of online and social media coverage of sport. Combining a quantitative content analysis with a qualitative framing analysis, this article identified, compared and contrasted frames, and …

An Ethnographic Study Of Pre-Graduate Precepted Nursing Student Clinical Placements In Long-Term Care Homes, Fran M. Meloche
Theses
Long-Term Care (LTC) home recruitment challenges and nursing student disinterest in such clinical placements and careers, underscore this study's urgent need. This qualitative focused ethnography explored preceptor, faculty advisor, and pre-graduate student beliefs, values, and practices contributing to positive LTC home clinical placements.
