Creating An Educational Framework For Popular Music In Public Schools: Anticipating The Second-Wave, Randall Everett Allsup Oct 2021

Creating An Educational Framework For Popular Music In Public Schools: Anticipating The Second-Wave, Randall Everett Allsup

Visions of Research in Music Education

As part of a panel presentation at the 2008 AERA Conference, this paper seeks to advance a critical examination of research on the informal learning practices that are associated with the way so-called popular musicians learn. A call for a “second-wave” of research studies on the teaching of popular music in schools is made. Contra instructional practices that adopt informal learning wholesale, the author argues that a sound educational framework must be in place should teachers and teacher educators wish to “operationalize” the practices of popular musicians. Arguing that there is a distinction between “informal learning” and “informalism,” and critiquing …

Quercetin Loaded Nanoparticles For The Treatment Of Dry Eye Disease, Bassma Sami Nashaat Hamed Eltanameli Oct 2021

Quercetin Loaded Nanoparticles For The Treatment Of Dry Eye Disease, Bassma Sami Nashaat Hamed Eltanameli

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Dry eye disease (DED) is a common condition that affects the eye's anterior surface due to tear deficiency or excessive evaporation. The lack of tears leads to dryness and initiation of an inflammatory response which can irritate the eye and interfere with daily activities. Current treatment depends mainly on artificial tears eye drops which offer temporary relief and require repetitive administration due to frequent blinking. Prescription medications are also available but need around three months to relieve dry eye symptoms. Quercetin is a flavonoid that has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. However, it suffers from low water solubility and low …

Book Review Of The Routledge Companion To Theatre Of The Oppressed, Amy Phillips Oct 2021

Book Review Of The Routledge Companion To Theatre Of The Oppressed, Amy Phillips

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

In my review of The Routledge Companion to Theatre of the Oppressed by Boal, J., Howe, K., and Soerio, J., eds. (London and New York: Routledge, 2019), I compare the book’s call for Theatre of the Oppressed to embrace a nuanced investigation of social problems with its response: the international movements detailed in its chapters. While demonstrating that the first-hand accounts provide a measured answer to contradictions inherent in a system which Augusto Boal developed in response to a specific political climate, I emphasize the beauty of theory and practice sitting side by side, in paradox, and encourage scholar and …

Exploring Online Participatory Theatre During Covid-19: Reflections On Adapting, Delivering, And Evaluating Student-Led Theatre For Health Workshops, Jeffrey Pufahl, Emmanuelle Crider, Kelviyana Walker

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the higher education community to quickly shift and adapt courses to the online environment. While traditional theatre programs struggled, the flexible nature of applied theatre created the space for students and instructors to explore and adapt existing forms, such as Forum Theatre and Sociodrama, and create engaging online workshops for the public. Over the course of 2020-21, students in the University of Florida’s Applied Theatre for Health program developed, delivered, and evaluated online health and wellness workshops for the public. This report focuses on two such projects: 1) a workshop on female reproductive health, and 2) …

Image Theatre As A Conduit For Academic Research, Felicia Owusu-Ansah Oct 2021

Image Theatre As A Conduit For Academic Research, Felicia Owusu-Ansah

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

In the last few decades Africa has seen an upsurge of the use of applied theatre in addressing individual and community issues in diverse paradigms. However, fewer studies have examined its potential beyond sensitisation, awareness creation campaigns and general education through playlets and post-performance discussion. This paper discusses how some aspects of applied theatre were used for data gathering in academic research in connection with Irregular Migration in Ghana. I base the discussion on how I used Applied Theatre, specifically, Augusto Boal’s Image works on the platform of Testimonial Theatre as an investigation tool in academic research. It also shows …

Branding Kidfluencers: Regulating Content And Advertising On Youtube, Gavin Feller, Benjamin Burroughs Oct 2021

Branding Kidfluencers: Regulating Content And Advertising On Youtube, Gavin Feller, Benjamin Burroughs

Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies Faculty Research

This paper analyzes emerging shifts in YouTube, advertising, and children’s digital media industries through a case study of Pocket Watch, a digital-first production and distribution studio built exclusively for YouTube child stars. Our analysis reveals the company’s strategic use of legacy media industry power, networks, and expertise to transform YouTube stars into global brands through the creation of toy, clothing, and lifestyle product lines across several industries. We further argue that Pocket Watch’s newly formed advertising division, Clock Work, exploits its child partners through problematic native advertising and host selling practices. The strategies implemented by Pocket Watch and other similar …

Restarting Plural Modernity: The Lyrical Tradition Of The Hometown In Kaili Blues, Huadong Fan Oct 2021

Restarting Plural Modernity: The Lyrical Tradition Of The Hometown In Kaili Blues, Huadong Fan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The dichotomous paradigm constituted by the realist tradition of Chinese cinema has become the epic and inertial discourse for understanding Chinese modernity. However, I argue that some new filmmakers after the sixth generation of directors have used the narrative and aesthetics of the hometown to change this dominant logic of Chinese modernity. The revolutions and wars of the twentieth century transformed the hometown from a relatively stable agrarian civilization to a modern society in violent turmoil. Recent hometown films are no longer satisfied with this realist aesthetic duality and strive for a pluralistic discourse of Chinese modernity, releasing it from …
