This study attempts to understand motivators and de-motivators that influence the decisions of software students to take up and sustain software testing careers across four different countries, Canada, India, China, and Malaysia. Towards that end, we have developed a cross-sectional, but simple, survey-based instrument. In this study we investigated how software engineering and computer science students perceive and value what they do and their environmental settings. This study found that very few students are keen to take up software testing careers - why is this happening with such an important task in the software life cycle? The common advantages of …

Vhs Archives, Committed Media Praxis, And ‘Queer Cinema', Alexandra Juhasz
Vhs Archives, Committed Media Praxis, And ‘Queer Cinema', Alexandra Juhasz
Publications and Research
Committed media praxis is a doing as much as it is a knowing. Queerness is a manner of being as much as it is a politics, theory, or set of modish objects. This chapter about topics that are also processes—queer, media praxis, cinema—performs these across two acts: “Part 1: A Hesitant or Maybe Just Slightly Defiant Preamble,” is a creative unfolding, in the body of the text and as much so in its footnotes, of the author’s “queer feminist media praxis”: “Part 2: VHS Archives” is a demonstration of VHS Archives, a multi-sited, many-yeared project in experimental pedagogy, web-based archival …

Leave No Trace, Willful Unknowing, And Implications From The Ethics Of Sustainability For Solution-Focused Practice Outdoors, Stephan Natynczuk, Will W. Dobud
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
Taking talking therapy outdoors is becoming increasingly popular, especially gaining traction in response to COVID restrictions on what can be done face-to-face indoors, and with increasing awareness of benefits from being outdoors in nature (Ewert & Davidson, 2021). In this paper, we draw on ethics of sustainability from the outdoor activity sector to look for metaphors for therapeutic practice outdoors, especially solution-focused brief therapy. We start with what is currently regarded as good practice for the preservation and conservation of the environments and habitats we frequent. We then develop these tenets of ethics, such as Leave No Trace, as metaphors …

A glucose-lowering medication that acts by a different mechanism than metformin, or other approved diabetes medications, can supplement monotherapies when patients fail to meet blood glucose goals. We examined the actions underlying the effects of an insulin sensitizer, tolimidone (MLR-1023) and investigated its effects on body weight. Diet-induced obesity (CD1/ICR) and type 2 diabetes (db/db) mouse models were used to study the effect of MLR-1023 on metabolic outcomes and to explore its synergy with menthol. We also examined the efficacy of MLR-1023 alone in a clinical trial (NCT02317796), as well as in combination with menthol in human adipocytes. MLR-1023 produced …

Background: There are limited data from randomized control trials to support or refute the contention that whole-grains can enhance protein metabolism in humans. Objectives: To examine: 1) the clinical effects of a whole-grain diet on whole-body protein turnover; 2) the cellular effects of whole-grains on protein synthesis in skeletal muscle cells; and 3) the population effects of whole-grain intake on age-related muscle loss. Methods: Adults with overweight/obesity (n = 14; age = 40 ± 7 y; BMI = 33 ± 5 kg/m2) were recruited into a crossover, randomized controlled trial (NCT01411540) in which isocaloric, macronutrient-matched whole-grain and refined-grain diets were …

The Mammy, The Strong, Or The Broken: Politics Of Hair Afrocentricities In Scripted Television, Hayley Blackburn
The Mammy, The Strong, Or The Broken: Politics Of Hair Afrocentricities In Scripted Television, Hayley Blackburn
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
The general literature on the experiences of Black women in America consistently discusses the way that more Afrocentric appearances— whether through skin tone, hairstyles and textures, clothing, language, or a combination of all the above— have been negatively framed throughout cultural and media histories ...
The Ruse Of Reading: The Postcolonial Literary Marketplace And The Novels Of Gina Apostol, Maria Gabriela Martin
The Ruse Of Reading: The Postcolonial Literary Marketplace And The Novels Of Gina Apostol, Maria Gabriela Martin
English Faculty Publications
This paper explores the politics of reading in the novelistic production of Gina Apostol in relation to Sarah Brouillette’s analysis of the postcolonial literary marketplace, Timothy Brennan’s critique of cosmopolitanism, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s tracking of the native informant in postcolonial discourse. In Brouillette’s work, postcolonial writers, unlike the Romantic author who disavows commercial popularity, are aware of the commodification of their work and interact with it, either through resistance or complicity. Cosmopolitanism for Brennan denotes an unequal flow of intellectual commodities between center and periphery instantiated in the consciousness of the migrant writer valorized in “international book markets because …
"Read It Again!": Storytelling To Imitate The Great Teacher, Kate Whatley
"Read It Again!": Storytelling To Imitate The Great Teacher, Kate Whatley
Senior Honors Theses
The student’s mind is bent on stories, asking mothers around the world to ‘read it again’. These stories preserve information and emotions for centuries. In the classroom, stories enliven motivation and empathy in ways that result in higher academic achievement and social awareness. Learning to use stories as a key instructional strategy will allow for more equitable opportunities in classrooms, encourage mental health and truth telling for the teacher and the student collectively, and allow the academic community to imitate Christ by contributing to the bigger story taking place across time. In application of using stories as teachers, this thesis …
We Are Each Other’S Breath: Tracing Interdependency Through Critical Poetic Inquiry, Karen Zaino, Jordan Bell
We Are Each Other’S Breath: Tracing Interdependency Through Critical Poetic Inquiry, Karen Zaino, Jordan Bell
Publications and Research
In this paper, we utilize poetic methods that seek to surface, but not overdetermine, the unanticipated relational excess produced through literacy practices. Karen, a queer white woman, and Jordan, a cis-gendered heterosexual Black man, wrote a series of letters to one another throughout the Spring 2020 semester. We turned to critical poetic inquiry to analyze the letters, interested in poetry’s capacity to highlight literacy’s critical power and its emergent potential. We found ourselves implicated in each other’s lives in new ways; we found our relationship both strengthened and tested. Such relational indeterminacy creates methodological challenges in literacy research. We found …

Presumed Nonhuman: Black Women Intellectuals And The Struggle For Humanity In The Academy, Andrea N. Baldwin
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
In this article I engage with the work of Sylvia Wynter, Christina Sharpe, and Kevin Quashie, weaving in my own personal narrative of being presumed nonhuman to detail the everyday struggles Black women academics face. Herein I also illustrate how these struggles become sites of resistance, building, and hope.

The Fantasy Of “Home”: Locating Dislocation, Loss, And Silence, Roksana Badruddoja
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
The meaning(s) of “home” are once again a robust conversation in the American national landscape as we continue to struggle over postcolonial empire-inspired borders. As a queer Person of Color, Woman of Color, and Mother of Color in the U.S.; an American offspring of Bangladeshi Muslim immigrant parents; and a professor of social inequalities, I am particularly concerned about thinking through neoliberal anti-liberatory U.S. racialization projects and the notion of “home” or what I call the “neoliberal home.” I concern myself with diverse languages, images, myths, and rituals through which “home” is represented and constituted, and from the dispatches of …
Informing Without Conforming: Applying Two Frameworks To Enrich Autoethnography, Annmarie Dull
Informing Without Conforming: Applying Two Frameworks To Enrich Autoethnography, Annmarie Dull
The Qualitative Report
This article explores my experiences using two frameworks to guide the design, implementation and reporting of an autoethnography. I used Hughes, Pennington, and Makris’ (2012) framework for translating autoethnography to the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Standards for reporting empirical research to inform the structure, design, and process for the autoethnography, and Milner’s (2007) framework for researchers to examine seen, unseen, and unforeseen dangers to guide my reflection, support reflexivity, and examine the development of a dynamic positionality. In this article, I illustrate how using these frameworks enhanced the rigor and reflexivity of my autoethnographic research.

Cultural Diplomacy And Co-Operation In Asean: The Role Of Arts And Culture Festivals, David Ocon
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Beyond their traditional role as entertainment, form of expression and meeting spaces within local communities, arts and culture festivals can perform various functions. They can serve as showcases of artistic pride, signal openness towards cultural diversity, support the local economy, contribute to reducing political tension and provide grounds to consolidate international relationships. On occasion, such festivals function as tools to support the vision of a multilateral co-operation institution, as is the case of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Through a comprehensive review of the arts and culture festivals curated in ASEAN, this article investigates the festivals’ ulterior motivations. …
Impact Of Date-Pit Activated Carbon In Different Applications: Biomedical And Environment, Betty Titus Mathew
Impact Of Date-Pit Activated Carbon In Different Applications: Biomedical And Environment, Betty Titus Mathew
Dissertations
Activated carbon (AC) or activated charcoal are black carbonaceous porous solid material with prominent physico-chemical properties such as low volume pore size distribution, high specific surface area, and high-degree of surface reactivity for adsorption and other chemicals reactions. AC as strong and reliable adsorbent have been reported to be employed in diverse applications stretching from water/air purification, medical, sewage treatment, energy storage devices, catalyst, supercapacitor electrodes fabrication, and as biosensors component. In this current work, AC was produced from date pits, which is a common biological waste product in UAE, and used for biomedical and environmental applications instead of using …

Proposing A Framework For Science Teachers’ Competencies Regarding Translanguaging In Multicultural Settings, Noushin Nouri, Alma D. Rodríguez, Maryam Saberi
Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications
The increasing cultural and linguistic diversity in today’s classrooms calls for science teachers to facilitate science learning for all students. Drawing from a sociocultural framework that values diverse students’ cultures and languages, a translanguaging pedagogy has been identified as one way to help linguistically diverse students develop science concepts. A meta-synthesis of studies exploring translanguaging pedagogy in science classrooms was conducted to create a framework for the competencies needed by science teachers to incorporate a translanguaging pedagogy in their instruction. The resulting framework consists of six competencies: (1) The teacher should know pedagogical methods on how to teach bilingual students, …
Collaborative Music And Dance Improvisation Project: Investigating Perspectives, Patricia E. Riley
Collaborative Music And Dance Improvisation Project: Investigating Perspectives, Patricia E. Riley
Visions of Research in Music Education
The 2014 National Core Arts Standards identify creating as one of three primary artistic processes. Music educators have often reported the improvising content standard of the 1994 version of the national standards challenging to implement outside of the jazz setting. With the intent of increasing pre-service teachers’ competence, confidence, and comfort level in implementing improvisation activities, this research explores participant (N=15) perceptions regarding these areas following a collaborative music and dance free-improvisation project. Research questions were: How does a collaborative music and dance free improvisation project impact pre-service music teachers’ perceived competence, confidence, and comfort in their improvisation skills? How …

Iraqi Cinema Beyond The Screen And The Archives Of Leisure, Pelle Valentin Olsen
Iraqi Cinema Beyond The Screen And The Archives Of Leisure, Pelle Valentin Olsen
Regards
The emergence of new forms of leisure in Iraqi urban landscapes, such as cinemas, nightclubs, and theaters, unleashed debates about the dangers and potentials of leisure.
The result of this process is a vast, albeit scattered, archive of texts that deal with practices and institutions of leisure.
The archive of leisure, as it pertains to cinema, can be located across a variety of texts including memoirs, short stories, student essays, police records, official discourse, medical texts, and works by Iraqi historians.
Given the limited access to Iraqi film and cinema archives, the archive of leisure can offer an important addendum …
Bahiga Hafez On Youtube And Feminist Archives Of Egyptian Cinema, Claire Cooley
Bahiga Hafez On Youtube And Feminist Archives Of Egyptian Cinema, Claire Cooley
Regards
Since YouTube’s inception in 2005, scholars of Egyptian cinema have enjoyed access to films in unprecedented ways. Remediated to the digital from a variety of formats – satellite broadcasts, VHS, celluloid – Egyptian films and other parafilmic material are available on YouTube and accessible to nearly everyone.
Despite the growing dependence of scholars on YouTube for research on Egyptian cinema, and the possibility of complicating male-centered narratives through its collections, there has been little theoretical consideration of YouTube’s role in their work.
In this essay, I draw on the idiosyncratic collection of Bahiga Hafez-related material on YouTube to argue that …

The Effect Of Country-Of-Origin On The Customers’ Perception Of Product: A Literature Review, Nora Sadiku Dushi, Gonxhe Beqiri, Aferina Skeja
UBT International Conference
Customer purchasing is considered a very complex process because it is influenced by many intrinsic and extrinsic cues. The extrinsic cue of country-of-origin (COO) also known as a “Made in” label is found to have a significant role in customers' purchasing decisions. The country-of-origin growing popularity is in a large part attributed to the world trade globalization that enabled the free movement of goods between different countries providing the opportunity for buyers to have access to the numerous products produced in different parts of the world. It has been noted that the “Made in” label comes into play especially when …

“You Got To Know Us”: A Hopeful Model For Music Education In Urban Schools, Frank Martignetti, Brent C. Talbot, Matthew Claughs, Timothy Hawkins, Nasim Niknafs
Visions of Research in Music Education
Urban schools, and the students and teachers within, are often characterized by a metanarrative of deficit and crisis, causing the complex realities of urban education to remain unclear behind a wall of assumptions and stereotypes. Within music education, urban schools have received limited but increasing attention from researchers. However, voices from practitioners are often missing from this dialogue, and the extant scholarly dialogue has had a very limited effect on music teacher education. In this article, five music educators with a combined thirty years of experience in urban schools examine aspects of their experiences in the light of critical pedagogy …

Exploration Of Student Development Through Sonwriting, Patricia E. Riley
Visions of Research in Music Education
This research explored the personal development resulting from songwriting interactions of undergraduate liberal arts students in two sections of a first-year experience course working to develop and refine songwriting skill. The goal of the course was to help students communicate and express themselves through songwriting in a supportive and collaborative environment. In-class activities included students collaboratively analyzing and discussing existing songs, interacting with guest songwriters, and discussing two texts. Student assignments included creating five original songs, analyzing pre-existing self-chosen songs, mentoring and collaborating with each other regarding their original songs, performing in a coffee-house presentation, and reflecting on their development …
