Gaining An Upper Hand: How Gesture Usage During Conflict Resolution Predicts Family Cohesion During The Transition To College, Martha Chan Jan 2021

Gaining An Upper Hand: How Gesture Usage During Conflict Resolution Predicts Family Cohesion During The Transition To College, Martha Chan

West Chester University Master’s Theses

The purpose of this project is to examine the frequency of hand gestures used by family triads (mother, father, and emerging adult offspring) engaging in a conflict resolution task. The hypotheses explored in this thesis expand upon previous research by Chu, Meyer, Foulkes, & Kita (2014), which suggested that the frequency of gestures individuals use may be related to their own desire to communicate clearly, while also functioning as a way to ensure that the listener understands the information they are conveying. In addition, the usage of gestures conveys to all parties the level of attention each participant has invested …

Measurement Invariance In The Cesd-8 And Assessment Of Mood Correlates Between American And Mexican Community Studies On The Multisystemic Geriatric Depression Cycle, Manuel Herrera Legon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The Health and Retirement Study is a longitudinal study that is conducted every other year in the United States and has served as a precursor to similar studies across the world, such as the Mexican Health and Aging Study. The purpose of the current project was evaluating the relationship between depressive symptoms, inflammation and physical activity levels using data from the HRS and MHAS studies. The current project was divided in two main studies. The first study aimed at establishing measurement invariance in a brief questionnaire about depressive symptoms, the CES-D 8. The second study looked at various theories of …

Understanding The Dietary Behavior Of A 7th - 8th Century Avar Community From Jagodnjak, Croatia Using Stable Isotope Analysis Of Bone Collagen, Marlon Koci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The dietary behavior of past communities is influenced by several factors such as environmental sources, social and economic organization, individual preferences, and physiological needs. Every society has its characteristics and understanding the dietary choices of its individuals expands the knowledge about its lifestyle. Applying biochemical tracers, we can explore the food choices of an Early Medieval Avar community. The Jagodnjak cemetery (n=35) in Croatia is dated to the 7–8th century. Historical and archaeological records are currently limited for Avar populations. Jagodnjak is a transitory community from a period where different historical events shaped the community's way of life. The research …

Playing At The Crossroads Of Religion And Law: Historical Milieu, Context And Curriculum Hooks In Lost & Found, Owen Gottlieb

Articles

This chapter presents the use of Lost & Found – a purpose-built tabletop to mobile game series – to teach medieval religious legal systems. The series aims to broaden the discourse around religious legal systems and to counter popular depiction of these systems which often promote prejudice and misnomers. A central element is the importance of contextualizing religion in period and locale. The Lost & Found series uses period accurate depictions of material culture to set the stage for play around relevant topics – specifically how the law promoted collaboration and sustainable governance practices in Fustat (Old Cairo) in twelfth-century …

Wabi-Sabi As A Way Of Life In The Japanese Employment System: Multilateral Connections, Relativity, And Duality, Kanji Kitamura Jan 2021

Wabi-Sabi As A Way Of Life In The Japanese Employment System: Multilateral Connections, Relativity, And Duality, Kanji Kitamura

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Wabi-sabi is a Japanese concept traditionally described as a type of beauty that conveys the philosophical values of imperfection, incompleteness, and impermanence. Going beyond the traditional interpretation of the concept, this chapter attempts to discover wabi-sabi as a way of life in Japanese corporate settings. This chapter first revisits the concept of wabi-sabi and the system of lifetime employment, positioning them as intrinsically linked systems. To contextualize employment practice, it examines the tool of a job description and the system of job rotation as attributes of employment practice. The findings reveal the existence of wabi-sabi as a way of life …

“Let Those Who Have An Experience Of Prison Speak”: The Critique & Praxis Of The Prisons Information Group (1970-1980), Bernard E. Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

As the May ’68 revolution reached a boiling point, a remarkable assemblage of philosophers, writers, and incarcerated persons, doctors, nurses, social workers, and sociologists, activists and organizers, and militants in France turned their attention to the problem of the prison. At a time when prisons were mostly hidden from view, practically impenetrable in France to outsiders, at a time long before we recognized mass incarceration in countries like the United States, the Prisons Information Group (the Groupe d’information sur les prisons or the “GIP”) coalesced to spotlight the travesty of justice that is the prison – one that continues unabated …

Mormon Performance/Performing Mormonism: At The Intersection Of Mormon, Theatre, And Performance Studies, Megan Sanborn Jones

Mormon Studies Review

The Nauvoo Dramatic Association was founded in 1844 to respond to a growing demand for culture and entertainment in the booming young Illinois city. Organized by Joseph Smith, the company was directed by Thomas A. Lyne, a recent convert and professional actor from Philadelphia. The first offering of the society was advertised for performance in the newly dedicated Masonic Hall on April 24, 1844. All were invited to attend Pizarro, or The Death of Rolla, a “rational amusement with usefulness.”1 While the performance was postponed until April 26, 1844, due to heavy rains, the wait did not lessen the positive …

Laughter As Strategies In Business Communication Between Thai And Burmese Professionals, Tabtip Kanchanapoomi, Wannapa Trakulkasemsuk

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Laughter is not just an element in human communication that signifies happiness and enjoyment, it can be used as a communication strategy to lubricate successful interaction including business communication. Nonetheless, not many studies have paid attention to laughter in business communication. Therefore, this paper sheds light on how Thai and Burmese participants used laughter in a restaurant and in a business meeting in Yangon, Myanmar. Audio data was collected together with various pieces of ethnographic data, for example, participant observations reported from extensive field notes, semi-structured interviews and audio recordings. The analysis was based on the classification of laughter adopted …

Perspectives On Malay Language Use And Autonym Preference Among Urban Malays In South Thailand, Christopher M. Joll, Srawut Aree Jan 2021

Perspectives On Malay Language Use And Autonym Preference Among Urban Malays In South Thailand, Christopher M. Joll, Srawut Aree

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This article offers theoretical and ethnographic perspectives on language ideology and autonym preference among bi-lingual urban Malays in Pattani’s provincial capital. The first of its two substantive sections presents a concise summary of the most relevant insights provided by linguistic anthropologists and sociolinguists who have written on language ideology and the role of language in identity formation. The primary purpose of the second section is to explore the heuristic utility of these theoretical insights on a range of ethnographic vignettes where a range of language-related issues have historically represented a significant source of mistrust between the local Malay majority and …

The Incredible 5-Point Scale Board Game, Brooke A. Maupin Jan 2021

The Incredible 5-Point Scale Board Game, Brooke A. Maupin

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Game-based learning has become a staple of the educational community. However, it has not always reached the psychological community. Board games and game-based learning provide an opportunity to teach individuals about psychological concepts in a more engaging and entertaining way. Games are an ideal way to teach emotion related skills because they offer a safe and more accepting environment for mistakes. Further, board games encourage an active learning environment which can improve acquisition of knowledge. The current discussion focuses on taking a therapeutic tool (The Incredible 5-Point Scale) and developing it into a board game for use in session and …

‘Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast’: Use And Abuse Of Culture In International Strategy Research, Stephen Tallman, Jay Valerian Wu Jan 2021

‘Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast’: Use And Abuse Of Culture In International Strategy Research, Stephen Tallman, Jay Valerian Wu

Management Faculty Publications

International strategy, as a subfield of strategic management, has too often settled for simplistic and rote approaches to bringing the international setting into the analysis of cross-border strategies and their consequences. We examine the application of national culture in international strategy research as perhaps the most common expression of locational awareness. We begin by considering the many critical assessments of current theoretical and empirical research on the culture-strategy interaction. We summarize multiple meta-analytic studies and examine a sample of empirical articles from the past 40 years more closely to offer our own criticism of the theories, settings, data, models, and …

Beyond Realism: Reading The Ongoing Wounds Of Enslavement In Beloved And Kindred, Stephanie Fawell Jan 2021

Beyond Realism: Reading The Ongoing Wounds Of Enslavement In Beloved And Kindred, Stephanie Fawell

Honors Theses

In an introductory chapter, I synthesize a genealogy of African Diasporic thinkers that challenge traditionally conceptualized bounds of realism and modernism both aesthetically and intellectually. In the chapters that follow, I look closely at Morrison’s Beloved and Butler’s Kindred, as well as the scholarly discussions surrounding the elements in these novels that stretch the bounds of conventionally defined realism. In both novels the linearity of time and concreteness of space is challenged: in Beloved, the ghost of Sethe’s child continues to haunt her family after her death and then physically manifests as Beloved, crossing a mysterious bridge between …

Origin Stories: Critical Race Theory Encounters The War On Terror, Natsu Taylor Saito Jan 2021

Origin Stories: Critical Race Theory Encounters The War On Terror, Natsu Taylor Saito

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

Stories matter. They matter to those intent on maintaining structures of power and privilege, and to those being crushed by those structures. In the United States, the space to tell, and to hear, our stories has been expanding. This means that the histories and lived realities of those who have been excluded, particularly people of color, are seeping into mainstream discourse, into the books our children read, the movies and television shows they watch, and the many websites comprising social media. Critical race theory has played a role in this expansion. It insists that we recognize the legitimacy of the …

The Museum As A Mirror: Reinterpreting And Delinking American Landscape Art From Colonial Narratives, Blythe C. Romano Jan 2021

The Museum As A Mirror: Reinterpreting And Delinking American Landscape Art From Colonial Narratives, Blythe C. Romano

Honors Theses

Art museums have recently been looking at their existing collections with heightened scrutiny, revisiting their decision to display colonial works uncritically in their gallery spaces, and reconsidering the idea that there is such a thing as a unified art historical canon. These conversations regarding reinterpretation are necessary for all museums that choose to display art with problematic histories, as this information is owed to visitors -- especially within the settler colonial context. The Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine is one site where such collection and gallery “reinterpretation” has begun to be implemented and discussed. For example, in …

An Evangelism And Discipleship Pathway To Address The Cultural And Worldview Distance Between The Preston Seventh-Day Adventist Church And The White British Culture In Preston, Jeff Keith Couzins Jan 2021

An Evangelism And Discipleship Pathway To Address The Cultural And Worldview Distance Between The Preston Seventh-Day Adventist Church And The White British Culture In Preston, Jeff Keith Couzins

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem.

The UK Preston Seventh-day Adventist Church in the North England Conference is a predominantly Black church situated in a White British city. The Church has seen a numerical increase of almost 25% since 2013, but only one person from this growth was from the majority culture population, a group who tend not to be attracted to traditional Adventist forms of evangelism. The hypothesis for this project, therefore, is that when the cultural and worldview distance between church members and individuals in society is reduced, it is easier for the Christian witness to then explain the Kingdom of God. Also, …

Songs From The Sea : Maritime Influence On Indonesian Popular Songs In The 1980s, Abdullah Sammy Jan 2021

Songs From The Sea : Maritime Influence On Indonesian Popular Songs In The 1980s, Abdullah Sammy

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This study examines the influence of maritime affairs on the development of Indonesian popular music in the 1980s. During the 1980s period, maritime events and issues became one of the discourses that developed in society. This is inseparable from the burning incident of the Tampomas II ship which resulted in hundreds of deaths. Not only the Tampomas II tragedy, the 1980s was marked by the issue of damage to marine ecosystems in Indonesia. This research reveals that Indonesian music is heavily influenced by maritime elements. Almost all traditional Indonesian music in each region touches on maritime elements. The same applies …

The Practice Of Creative Music And Dance Performances Of The Asli Mala Group, Rungnapa Sathittham, Nantida Chandransu Jan 2021

The Practice Of Creative Music And Dance Performances Of The Asli Mala Group, Rungnapa Sathittham, Nantida Chandransu

Journal of Urban Culture Research

What are the contexts and conditions important to the sustainability of an expressive culture, especially in the face of an everchanging socio-cultural environment? This research examines the strategies used by the Asli Mala performance group to adapt the traditional rong ngeng Pattani performance into their creative repretoire. Using data gathered from observations and interviews during fieldwork in 2018-19 and drawing on Bourdieu’s practice theory, I asked: How might we read Asli Mala’s creative works in terms of fields, capitals and strategies? While I argue that there are dominant and dominated agents operating under four subfields, the strategies employed by the …

Developing And Validating A Chinese Cultural Value Scale In Tourism, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Jun Wen Jan 2021

Developing And Validating A Chinese Cultural Value Scale In Tourism, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Jun Wen

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Chinese cultural values are important in understanding Chinese tourists’ behaviour. However, the literature is void of a relevant scale measuring Chinese cultural values in tourism. This research aims to develop and validate a Chinese cultural values scale in tourism (abbreviated as CCV-T). Following a rigorous scale development procedure and applying multi-stage studies, the research identified a 5-factor measurement scale of CCV-T, composed of 17 items with sufficient reliability and validity. The five Chinese cultural value factors are Leisure and Life Enjoyment (LLE), Filial Piety and Relationship (FPR), Self-fulfilment, Righteousness, and Humanity. The CCV-T scale provides a …

© 2021 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. This article argues for an expansion of the idea of the first-in-family student to include the student whose spouse or partner has not been to university. Between 2015 and 2016, a qualitative longitudinal study, guided by Gadamer’s hermeneutic philosophy, was undertaken. Twenty-nine undergraduate women nursing students who began university in a heterosexual intimate relationship participated. All 29 were interviewed in their fourth semester of their degree (or part-time equivalent), and 23 of these 29 completed a second interview in their last semester. Thematic analysis of …

‘Mingren Are The Respectable Ones’: An Analysis Of Everyday Engagements With Contemporary Celebrity Culture In China, Min Xu, Stijn Reijnders, Sangkyun (Sean) Kim Jan 2021

‘Mingren Are The Respectable Ones’: An Analysis Of Everyday Engagements With Contemporary Celebrity Culture In China, Min Xu, Stijn Reijnders, Sangkyun (Sean) Kim

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

To investigate the values and social norms underpinning celebrity culture, it is crucial to study everyday uses of celebrity culture. Yet, studies in this area have been limited thus far, especially in non-Western contexts. This exploratory study focuses on the ways how young and middle-aged adults in everyday life in urban China discuss and value media celebrities. The results show that respondents have a rather similar way of valuing celebrity: celebrities need to have strong work ethics and showcase social responsibility; only then do they ‘earn’ their right to be considered ‘famous’. We conclude that these values are closely related …

The Uncanny Swipe Drive: The Return Of A Racist Mode Of Algorithmic Thought On Dating Apps, Gregory Narr Jan 2021

The Uncanny Swipe Drive: The Return Of A Racist Mode Of Algorithmic Thought On Dating Apps, Gregory Narr

Publications and Research

As algorithmic media amplify longstanding social oppression, they also seek to colonize every last bit of sociality where that oppression could be resisted. Swipe apps constitute prototypical examples of this dynamic. By employing protocols that foster absent-minded engagement, they allow unconscious racial preferences to be expressed without troubling users’ perceptions of themselves as non-racist. These preferences are then measured by recommender systems that treat “attractiveness” as a zero-sum game, allocate affective flows according to the winners and losers of those games, and ultimately amplify the salience of race as a factor of success for finding intimacy. In thus priming users …

Directions For Research Practice In Decolonising Methodologies: Contending With Paradox, Tamara A. Lipscombe, Antonia Hendrick, Peta L. Dzidic, Darren C. Garvey, Brian Bishop Jan 2021

Directions For Research Practice In Decolonising Methodologies: Contending With Paradox, Tamara A. Lipscombe, Antonia Hendrick, Peta L. Dzidic, Darren C. Garvey, Brian Bishop

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The complex nature of colonisation presents with the potential for paradoxes in decolonising approaches, hence, fixed conventions and methods are discouraged. In this way, decolonising methodologies concerns interrogating dominant conventions in research that have typically excluded alternative ways of knowing from academia. This raises concern about the issue of breaking conventions, when it is potentially difficult to realise that one is depending upon them. An incremental approach to the research process and subsequent knowledge generated provides opportunity to challenge the conventions that typically dictate research praxis. In addition, fostering epistemological transformation and pluralism presents a solution to problems derived from …

Potential Of Sorghum Polyphenols To Prevent And Treat Alzheimer's Disease: A Review Article, Nasim Rezaee, Warnakulasuriya Mary Ann Dipika Fernando, Eugene Hone, Hamid R. Sohrabi, Stuart K. Johnson, Stuart Gunzburg, Ralph Martins

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by the excessive deposition of extracellular amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) and the build-up of intracellular neurofibrillary tangles containing hyperphosphorylated tau proteins. This leads to neuronal damage, cell death and consequently results in memory and learning impairments leading to dementia. Although the exact cause of AD is not yet clear, numerous studies indicate that oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction significantly contribute to its onset and progression. There is no effective therapeutic approach to stop the progression of AD and its associated symptoms. Thus, early intervention, preferably, pre-clinically when the brain is not significantly affected, is a …

Little is known about how education interruption caused by COVID-19 has influenced the literacy learning of Australian students. This article provides insights into the impact of COVID-19 related education interruption on writing instruction of primary school aged children from the perspectives of their teachers. Drawing on data from a single-stage mixed-methods survey tool, it explores extent of perception of an impact of COVID-19 writing instruction in Australia, as well as capturing data on the nature of this perceived impact. As expected, the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact …

Perceptions Of Consensual Sexual Student-Faculty Relationships, Olivia Pottschmidt Jan 2021

Perceptions Of Consensual Sexual Student-Faculty Relationships, Olivia Pottschmidt

Theses and Dissertations

Consensual, sexual relationships (CSRs) involving university faculty members and students are not uncommon (Richards et al., 2014). Given the increased attention of sexual harassment on college campuses, a number of universities have implemented CSR policies that generally fall into three categories: total ban, limited ban, and discouragement. Despite the intention of these policies,--the prevention of sexual assault and harassment--they have been criticized for being vague and too general (Bellas & Gosset, 2001; Jafar, 2003). Examining student perceptions can provide inside into university culture and inform policymaking. To this end, participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions stemming from …
