Osseointegration For Amputees: Past, Present And Future: Basic Science, Innovations In Surgical Technique, Implant Design And Rehabilitation Strategies, Munjed Al Muderis

Theses

Loss of a leg or arm is a tremendous disability. Immediate and obvious impairments are decreased mobility or diminished functional capacity. Not quite as obvious are the difficulties associated with activities of daily living, quality of life impairments, sometimes loss of independence or employment, and the mental health issues which often accompany limb loss. The interface between native tissue and the prosthetic limb presents the greatest challenge to amputee rehabilitation. Computer-controlled robotic limbs have been widely available since the 1990s. However, the weight of prosthetic limbs, coupled with the difficulty of where to locate the components, requires substantial loads to …

On 'Synderesis' And Moral Imagination: An Inquiry Into The Beneficence Of ‘Imaginative Prudence’ In Moral Development Via The First Principles Of Natural Law Of Saint Thomas Aquinas And The Imagination Ethic Theory Of Darcia Narvaez, Pierangelo Dela Cruz Repuyan Jan 2021

On 'Synderesis' And Moral Imagination: An Inquiry Into The Beneficence Of ‘Imaginative Prudence’ In Moral Development Via The First Principles Of Natural Law Of Saint Thomas Aquinas And The Imagination Ethic Theory Of Darcia Narvaez, Pierangelo Dela Cruz Repuyan

Theses

he Thomistic habit of synderesis innately inclines moral agents to the first principles of natural law which state that good is to be done and pursued and evil to be avoided. Serving as an ethical foundation in moral development, these primary moral principles direct practical reason to those acts that actualise the essence of human nature. Since the act of synderesis involves pre-cognitive (intuitive) and cognitive (apprehensive) processes, moral formation is necessary for the formal knowledge of the primary moral principles to inchoately foment through virtue habituation. According to St. Thomas Aquinas, virtues are habitual acts that form moral agents …

Board Ethnic And Racial Diversity: Does It Impact Earnings Quality?, Ann W Nduati Mungai Jan 2021

Board Ethnic And Racial Diversity: Does It Impact Earnings Quality?, Ann W Nduati Mungai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

I examine whether and how racially/ethnically diverse board impacts the quality of reported earnings. Agency theory suggests that the board of directors acts as a robust governance mechanism to reduce opportunistic managerial behavior that may harm shareholders' wealth. Further, diversity coalesces a variety of attributes from different directors that are valuable in predicting organizational outcomes. The majority of extant literature focuses on gender-diverse boards and various firm outcomes, while little is known about how directors' race/ethnicity affects earnings quality. Using a sample of firms publicly traded in the U.S., I find that increased board racial/ethnic diversity is associated with better …

Collection And Analysis Of Slow Denial Of Service Attacks Using Machine Learning Algorithms, Clifford Kemp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Application-layer based attacks are becoming a more desirable target in computer networks for hackers. From complex rootkits to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, hackers look to compromise computer networks. Web and application servers can get shut down by various application-layer DoS attacks, which exhaust CPU or memory resources. The HTTP protocol has become a popular target to launch application-layer DoS attacks. These exploits consume less bandwidth than traditional DoS attacks. Furthermore, this type of DoS attack is hard to detect because its network traffic resembles legitimate network requests. Being able to detect these DoS attacks effectively is a critical component …

Cultivation of microbial populations is a necessity for the use of microbes within the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries, however, approximately only 1% of bacteria have been successfully cultivated in the lab. Dilution to Extinction (DTE) is a technique which involves serially diluting a microbial suspension to single cell inoculum prior to inoculation in a liquid medium designed to replicate natural aquatic environments. This technique was used here for the cultivation of diverse, potentially novel microbes from the marine sponge, Mycale microsigmatosa. One hundred thirty-six samples were successfully sequenced and identified with the majority belonging to the classes Alphaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria. …

Deep Learning For Crime Prediction, Nicholas Gacharich Jan 2021

Deep Learning For Crime Prediction, Nicholas Gacharich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In this research, we propose to use deep learning to predict crimes in small neighborhoods (regions) of a city, by using historical crime data collected from the past. The motivation of crime predictions is that if we can predict the number crimes that will occur in a certain week then the city officials and law enforcement can prepare resources and manpower more effectively. Due to inherent connections between geographic regions and crime activities, the crime numbers in different regions (with respect to different time periods) are often correlated. Such correlation brings challenges and opportunities to employ deep learning to learn …

Effects Of Anthropogenic Noise On Cognition And Growth In The Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia Guttata), Charlie Daria

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Urban noise is common in anthropogenic environments and impacts behavior and health in wildlife. Noise has been shown to negatively affect cognitive processes such as attention and memory in animals. Cognition is tightly linked with the survival of an organism and so urban noise can potentially hinder cognitive processes and the subsequent survival of the organism. I split my thesis into two experiments: (1) I tested if urban noise impacts avian cognitive performance by testing adult zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), a songbird, on several cognition tasks in the presence or absence of urban noise playback. I found that urban noise …

Florida Pompano Trachinotus carolinus are molluscivorous, greater than 70% of their natural diet consists of hard-shelled gastropods and bivalves. A specialized feeding mechanism (pharyngeal jaw) forms a crushing surface used to grind prey. In aquaculture, extruded pellets are fed and this feeding apparatus results in pellets fracturing and loss of fragments through their gill rakers. The effect of pellet form (hard vs. soft) and size on fractured pellet waste (FPW) and production characteristics of Pompano reared in recirculating aquaculture systems was addressed. No difference in FPW between the standard pellet size and smaller pellet size treatments. However, a difference in …

Effects Of Water Flow On A Wetland Macroinvertebrate Community, Chris Hansen Jan 2021

Effects Of Water Flow On A Wetland Macroinvertebrate Community, Chris Hansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Macroinvertebrates make up a large fraction of secondary production in wetlands and are strongly influenced by hydrologic alterations. However, little is known of the effect flow has on macroinvertebrate production and community composition in wetlands. Reintroducing measurable water velocities (1-5 cm/s) to the oligotrophic (phosphoruslimited) Everglades has the potential to affect macroinvertebrate production and community structure by increasing the supply of phosphorus (P) to periphyton, changing basal food quality, and physically altering the habitat. In Chapter 2, I investigated the potential effects of flow-mediated nutrient-loading on the growth rate of herbivorous grazers, apple snails (Pomacea maculata), by growing periphyton on …

ARB’s food web was found to have a large predator biomass with insufficient prey biomass to sustain the population, suggesting that these predators …

Freeway Operations In The Era Of Automated Vehicles: Impact Of Commercially Available Acc On Freeways, Md Tausif Murshed Jan 2021

Freeway Operations In The Era Of Automated Vehicles: Impact Of Commercially Available Acc On Freeways, Md Tausif Murshed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) vehicles have a longer reaction time, and the on-board sensors have a limited detection range that adversely affects the freeway bottleneck capacity. These limitations can cause small speed fluctuations into larger stop-and-go waves at typical freeway bottlenecks. Microsimulation results revealed that flow instability increases with the increase in ACC market penetration for a single lane freeway. The ACC car following model was developed for higher speed ranges only; thus, it could not capture rapid deceleration to lower speeds, let alone complete stops. The algorithm applies collision avoidance and brake relatively late in those instances, which leads …

From Ink To Screen: Gender And Race In Agent Carter, Jessica Jones, And Wynonna Earp, Samantha Diblasi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Throughout history, women in comics have played subordinate or lesser roles compared to males and were stereotyped. Today, representations have improved in comic-based tv shows. This thesis is answering three research questions: How does one define a “strong female character” within the comic-based and comic-styled genres, specifically in the TV shows Jessica Jones, Agent Carter, and Wynonna Earp? How does race/gender intersectionality affect the ways in which the non-white characters express masculinity or femininity compared to the white characters? How do the videos made by fans of the three tv series define a “strong female character?” This study applies textual …

G-Csf Gene Therapy For Brain Diseases And/Or Sickle Cell Anemia, Stefan Basilio Jan 2021

G-Csf Gene Therapy For Brain Diseases And/Or Sickle Cell Anemia, Stefan Basilio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Ischemic stroke is defined as a blockage or reduced flow of blood to select areas of brain tissue due to either plaque formation or buildup of blood clots in the small blood vessels. A characteristic of sickle cell anemic patients is the potential for them to experience a similar type of blockage due to the sticky nature of the sickled red blood cells as well as defective oxygen delivery to the brain. Because of this similarity, sickle cell anemia may represent a good animal research model for therapeutic intervention based on stroke models. In recent studies, Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor (GCSF), …
