This study examined the relationship between perceptions of trainers problems with professional competence (PPC), and the resolution of those competency issues, with trainee professional commitment to mental health professions and self-efficacy for addressing PPC they encounter in others. Data were obtained from 233 trainees enrolled in mental health graduate training programs throughout the United States. The findings indicated trainees who reported higher levels of impact by trainers exhibiting competency issues (including psychological distress) and discomfort addressing trainer PPC endorsed lower professional commitment. Additionally, frustration and disruption due to trainer PPC, discomfort addressing PPC, and need for more information about how …

Multivariate Analysis For Understanding Cognitive Speech Processing, Md Sultan Mahmud Jan 2021

Multivariate Analysis For Understanding Cognitive Speech Processing, Md Sultan Mahmud

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Categorical perception (CP) of audio is critical to understand how the human brainperceives speech sounds despite widespread variability in acoustic properties. Most studiesthat examine cognitive speech processing have applied methodological approaches that focuson specific or a set of brain regions. Departing from hypothesis-driven approaches, in thisdissertation, we proposed multivariate data-driven approaches to identify the spatiotemporal(i.e., when in time and where in the brain) and spectral (i.e., frequency-band power levels)characteristics of auditory neural activity that reflects CP for speech (i.e., differentiatesphonetic prototypes from ambiguous speech sounds). We recorded 64-channel EEG aslisteners rapidly classified vowel sounds along an acoustic-phonetic continuum. We usedparameter …

Our ability to generate data has far outdone our ability to analyze it in order to transform it into useful information. A major tool in addressing the problem is extraction or selection of informative features in the data. When the data is structured, dimensionality reduction and analyses can be much easier. However, structured data (beyond just superficial formatting and cleansing) is rare, hopeless in case of images and even text, particularly with DNA sequences. Deep networks resolve these issues to some extent but the question about explainability and timeliness of results still remains. Recent advancements in Genomic Information Systems (GenISs) …

Individual Auditory Categorization Abilities Are Shaped By Intrinsic And Experience-Driven Neural Factors, Kelsey Mankel Jan 2021

Individual Auditory Categorization Abilities Are Shaped By Intrinsic And Experience-Driven Neural Factors, Kelsey Mankel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

To make sense of the auditory world, listeners must organize diverse, continuously varying sounds into meaningful perceptual categories. The auditory categorization process is believed to be a foundational skill for language development and speech perception. Despite decades of behavioral research, neuroscientific evidence is only beginning to uncover where, when, and how auditory categories arise in the brain. Although it has been proposed that categorical perception is shaped by both innate (nature) and experience-driven (nurture) factors, it is unclear how these features manifest neurally at the individual level. In the first study of this dissertation, we recorded multi-channel electroencephalography (EEG) in …

A Study Of Structures In The Magnetic Basement In The Reelfoot Rift And Surrounding Region, Christopher Marlow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

We apply multiple filters to aeromagnetic intensity data to visualize the magnetic signature of eastern Reelfoot rift margin basement rocks. We interpret the eastern Reelfoot rift margin to be segmented into nine intersecting faults. We calculate the moment magnitude potential of each fault based on the estimated fault length. The minimum moment magnitude potential is 6.0, and the maximum is 7.0.The Crittenden County fault zone is a potentially active fault zone located within 25 km of Memphis, Tennessee, and poses a significant seismic hazard to the region. To improve our understanding of the structure of both fault systems in this …

The present study examined the effects of two error repair procedures on the spelling performance of five students who were rising first through third grades Each participant was diagnosed with a learning disability in reading and spelling. Using an Adapted Alternating Treatments Design, a teacher-led questioning procedure and a student-led visual comparison procedure were implemented in the unbranded Orton-Gillingham instructional model. Teacher-led questioning is the scaffolded model of error repair described in Orton-Gillingham Simultaneous Oral Spelling instruction. Student-led visual comparison is a method which is well documented in the literature as highly effective for students with learning disabilities. The intervention …

Investigating Speech Rate Alignment In Individuals With Traumatic Brain Injury, Megan Battles Parsons Jan 2021

Investigating Speech Rate Alignment In Individuals With Traumatic Brain Injury, Megan Battles Parsons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The alignment of verbal and nonverbal behaviors is important for conversation. Research has shown that interactive behavior alignment is commonly impaired following a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the ability for an individual with TBI to align their speech rate with their conversational partners can be affected. This non-convergence of speech rates can lead to negative social outcomes, including perceptions of decreased social connectedness and decreased willingness of conversational partners to engage in conversation. Despite these negative outcomes, researchers have yet to discover a therapeutic technique to increase speech rate convergence, and in turn, lead to positive social outcomes during …

Advancement Auto-Assessment Of Students Knowledge States From Natural Language Input, Nisrine Ait Khayi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Knowledge Assessment is a key element in adaptive instructional systems and in particular in Intelligent Tutoring Systems because fully adaptive tutoring presupposes accurate assessment. However, this is a challenging research problem as numerous factors affect students’ knowledge state estimation such as the difficulty level of the problem, time spent in solving the problem, etc. In this research work, we tackle this research problem from three perspectives: assessing the prior knowledge of students, assessing the natural language short and long students’ responses, and knowledge tracing.Prior knowledge assessment is an important component of knowledge assessment as it facilitates the adaptation of the …

Hyporheic Exchange Flow In River Bars: Depicting Travel Times At High Temporal And Spatial Resolutions, Eatedal Alqusaireen Jan 2021

Hyporheic Exchange Flow In River Bars: Depicting Travel Times At High Temporal And Spatial Resolutions, Eatedal Alqusaireen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The movement of river water into subsurface, near-streambed sediments and its return to the main channel after relatively short travel pathways is known as Hyporheic Exchange Flow (HEF). Hyporheic exchange brings both solutes and particles into high specific surface area environments, where they suffer biogeochemical transformations which impact a streams water quality and ecology. These processes, which are the basis for the self-purification capacity of river systems, depend on the quantity and travel time of flow within the sediments. Most previous research has focused on the net, larger-scale exchange processes between stream water and sediments, but not on the flow …

Programming skills are a vital part of many disciplines but can be challenging to teach and learn. Thus, the programming courses are considered difficult and a major stumbling block. To overcome these challenges, students could benefit from extensive individual support such as tutoring, but there are simply not enough qualified tutors available to meet rising demands.A potential solution is the development of intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs), which offer individualized, one-on-one instruction. Such systems can offer the support to make programming instruction more effective, scalable and reduce existing teachers' workloads. This dissertation demonstrates how conversational ITSs and the Socratic method of teaching …

Difference And Necessity: Dispositionalism, Deleuze, And The Finite Genesis Of Transfinite Truths, Michael J. Ardoline

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation attempts to resolve a central problem in the metaphysics of science. This problem is the conflict in ontologies that our best scientific theories seem to imply. Our best scientific theories tell us that the universe and everything in it is contingent, changing, and finite. Yet this model of the universe cannot even be formulated without the tools of contemporary mathematics. The objects that mathematics describes are necessary, unchanging, and involve infinities. If we take the statements of mathematics literally, we find all sorts of fantastic objects which cannot possibly fit within the bounds of our scientific picture of …

AbstractOne of the great failures, so far, of the United States experiment with democracy is the failure to ensure that every child receives an equitable educational experience. This study was conducted to contribute both to scholarship and to educational practices aimed at correcting years of disenfranchising Black and Brown children through oppressive educational practices. It is not a study of despair, but one of hope that, when professional development opportunities for teachers are designed to disrupt White supremacy in schools, there will be a greater chance that educators will think more critically about their own dispositions and enact more culturally …

Removing Hidden Barriers: Using Chat To Examine How Women Shape Their Military Experience, Kyle Bellue Jan 2021

Removing Hidden Barriers: Using Chat To Examine How Women Shape Their Military Experience, Kyle Bellue

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Using Critical Military Studies (Basham & Bulmer, 2017; Duncanson & Woodward, 2016), this exploratory case study analysis describes how women officers made sense of their gendered experience within the military, and uses agency, as defined by Post-structural feminism (Davies and Gannon, 2005), to highlight how women are shaped by their environment. The purpose was to both observe how women officers perceived military gender beliefs and practices and analyze how those perceptions shaped how they learn to participate in the military, as well as to analyze how those experiences helped them reshape gender beliefs and practices within the military. I also …

Epigenetics And Lung Function During Pre- And Post-Adolescence, Genome-Scale Studies, Shadia Khan Sunny

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The period from pre-adolescence to post-adolescence of life is significant for lung function development when it reaches its maximal level. Reduced lung function development in early life predisposes to respiratory and other chronic diseases later in life and is associated with early mortality. DNA methylation (DNA-M) is a potential epigenetic mechanism through which environmental exposures can exert their eects on gene expression and disease risk. It acts as an epigenetic memory of past exposure such as pubertal onset. DNA-M changes over time in response to biological aging, sex, and environmental factors, and such changes also occur in the adolescence period. …

An Investigation Of The Relative Impacts Of Hearing Aid Self-Efficacy And Personality On Aspects Of Hearing Aid Success, Lipika Sarangi Jan 2021

An Investigation Of The Relative Impacts Of Hearing Aid Self-Efficacy And Personality On Aspects Of Hearing Aid Success, Lipika Sarangi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

It has been hypothesized that patient factors such as self-efficacy and personality impact aspects of hearing aid (HA) success. Thus, researchers have recommended that clinicians incorporate these factors while planning individualized audiologic rehabilitation. However, the different contributions of these factors have not been evaluated in tandem. Additionally, most of these factors are evaluated using generalized measures. It is unclear whether general measures reflect nuanced psychosocial impacts of listening in difficult environments. This dissertation evaluated the relative impacts of patient factors on aspects of HA success using a series of quantitative and qualitative studies.First, we evaluated the associations between hearing aid …

Fugitive Gestures: The Persistence Of Black Meaning And Black Life In An Anti-Black World, Jasmine Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

My dissertation, Fugitive Gestures: The persistence of Black meaning and Black life in an anti-Black world, develops a phenomenological analysis of contemporary Black lived experience in the US occuring in fugitive spaces--territories independent of white supremacy and anti-Black disciplinary techniques. In contrast to Afropessimists who argue that contemporary Black subjects exists as nonbeing, I demonstrate the presence of contemporary Black meaning and Black being as expressed in Black gestures. First, I develop the concept 'Black archive' to describe how contemporary subjects live with the conceptual awareness of historical anti-Blackness as it unfolds in the present; are symbolically marked by 'hieroglyphics …

Caremark And Esg, Perfect Together: A Practical Approach To Implementing An Integrated, Efficient, And Effective Caremark And Eesg Strategy, Leo E. Strine Jr., Kirby M. Smith, Reilly S. Steel

Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership

With increased calls from investors, legislators, and academics for corporations to consider employee, environmental, social, and governance factors (“EESG”) when making decisions, boards and managers are struggling to situate EESG within their existing reporting and organizational structures. Building on an emerging literature connecting EESG with corporate compliance, this Essay argues that EESG is best understood as an extension of the board’s duty to implement and monitor a compliance program under Caremark. If a company decides to do more than the legal minimum, it will simultaneously satisfy legitimate demands for strong EESG programs and promote compliance with the law. Building on …

Let's Get Free: Family Policing, Prison Industrial Complex Abolition, And Transcendent Love, Emma Li Jan 2021

Let's Get Free: Family Policing, Prison Industrial Complex Abolition, And Transcendent Love, Emma Li

Scripps Senior Theses

My objective is to illuminate the painful, discriminatory, and avoidable effects of family separation underneath the American child welfare system and tradition of family policing. In this bureaucratically sprawling and interconnected system comprising of prisons, courts, social workers, and doctors, individual blame is assigned to parents, families, and communities facing long-running systemic problems. Family policing and the child welfare system have long been excluded from conventional discussions surrounding the harms of police and prisons. The everyday violence Black, Latinx, and low-income families face at the threat of/implementation of family separation - an immensely traumatic and agonizing process - must be …

The Internet-Extended Mind: The Psychological Ramifications And Philosophical Implications Of Cognitive Offloading, Gloria Choi Jan 2021

The Internet-Extended Mind: The Psychological Ramifications And Philosophical Implications Of Cognitive Offloading, Gloria Choi

Scripps Senior Theses

In this thesis, I explore the internet-extended mind through both philosophical and psychological lenses in order to investigate the questions “To what extent is the mind extended onto the internet and, more generally, outside our bodies?” and “How will an increasingly internet-extended brain change the ways in which humans communicate, remember, and behave?”. First, I introduce the idea of a mind that extends out into the world, instead of lying solely in the brain. Then, I outline existing research that introduces the challenges and implications of an internet-extended mind in an ever-changing internet landscape. Next, I discuss how the internet …

Identification And Sequence Analysis Of Set Superfamily Genes In Hymenopteran Insects, Tanima Joshi Jan 2021

Identification And Sequence Analysis Of Set Superfamily Genes In Hymenopteran Insects, Tanima Joshi

Scripps Senior Theses

Post-translational chemical modifications of histones, the proteins that package DNA, are a key component of the “language” of epigenetics. SET (Suppressor of Variegation 39, Enhancer of Zeste, Trithorax) domain-containing proteins are crucial enzymes that establish histone methylations as a major part of the histone code. Studies using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as a model organism have provided most of the known information on SET genes/protein diversity and function in insects. To expand our knowledge of this important protein family, I identified all SET domain-containing genes in a select group of insects belonging to the Hymenoptera order: wasps, bees, ants, …

Global Coordination Between Gene Expression Processes In C. Crescentus, James Raymond Aretakis Jan 2021

Global Coordination Between Gene Expression Processes In C. Crescentus, James Raymond Aretakis

Wayne State University Dissertations

Gene expression is an essential process of all organisms which occurs in two steps, mRNA transcription, and translation and which is shut off by mRNA decay. For a bacterium to grow and divide, these steps need to be tuned to optimize the synthesis rates of thousands of proteins from their genes. Genome-wide experiments were used to determine the absolute transcription rates, mRNA degradation rates, and translation rates on a gene by gene basis in the model bacterium Caulobacter crescentus. This not only provides a system biology view of the organism’s gene expression resource allocation, but also provides a chance to …

Authentic Assessments: Preparing Undergraduate Computing Students For A New Future Of Remote Internships, Farrah Higgins Jan 2021

Authentic Assessments: Preparing Undergraduate Computing Students For A New Future Of Remote Internships, Farrah Higgins

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

It is accepted practice now in higher education in Ireland that assessments should be designed to assess the learning outcomes of a module and the skills needed for professional practice. Due to the current demands and challenges of remote working, employers are looking for a new set of employability skills where graduates can work autonomously and network remotely. Authentic assessments are an opportunity to produce ‘remote work ready’ graduates for this new working environment. However, authentic assessments can be decontextualised if they are designed without considering both academic outcomes and industry/real-world activities. The following practitioner case study reviews the research …
