Medical Cannabis Packaging And Labelling Concerns For Middle Aged And Older Manitobans, Vanessa Tatyana Christiuk

Human Development and Family Science

Middle-aged and older adults make up the largest growing proportion of medical cannabis users in Canada, as well as the largest proportion of the population to vote in the last federal election (Elections Canada, 2020; Statistics Canada, 2019). Middle-aged, and older adults may encounter problems with the way their medical cannabis is packaged and labelled. The present study investigated how a sample of Manitobans aged 45 and older experienced their medical cannabis packaging, including the manipulation of medical cannabis packaging and readability of the labelling. Most participants reported having difficulty opening child-safe lids and the inability to clearly read the …

Some Studies On Reliability Analysis Of Complex Cyber-Physical Systems, Alex Vicente Davila Frias Jan 2021

Some Studies On Reliability Analysis Of Complex Cyber-Physical Systems, Alex Vicente Davila Frias

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs), a term coined in 2006 refers to the integration of computation with physical processes. Particularly, modern critical infrastructures are examples of CPSs, like smart electric power grids, intelligent water distribution networks, and intelligent transportation systems. CPSs provide critical services that have great impact in nation’s economy, security, and health. Therefore, reliability is a primary metric. Nevertheless, the study of complex CPSs reliability demands understanding the joint dynamics of physical processes, hardware, software, and networks. In the present research, a series of studies is proposed to contribute to the challenging reliability analysis of CPSs by considering the reliability …

The Uncanny Swipe Drive: The Return Of A Racist Mode Of Algorithmic Thought On Dating Apps, Gregory Narr Jan 2021

The Uncanny Swipe Drive: The Return Of A Racist Mode Of Algorithmic Thought On Dating Apps, Gregory Narr

Publications and Research

As algorithmic media amplify longstanding social oppression, they also seek to colonize every last bit of sociality where that oppression could be resisted. Swipe apps constitute prototypical examples of this dynamic. By employing protocols that foster absent-minded engagement, they allow unconscious racial preferences to be expressed without troubling users’ perceptions of themselves as non-racist. These preferences are then measured by recommender systems that treat “attractiveness” as a zero-sum game, allocate affective flows according to the winners and losers of those games, and ultimately amplify the salience of race as a factor of success for finding intimacy. In thus priming users …

‘The Good English’: The Ideological Construction Of The Target Language In Adult Esol, Kelsey Swift Jan 2021

‘The Good English’: The Ideological Construction Of The Target Language In Adult Esol, Kelsey Swift

Publications and Research

This project problematizes hegemonic conceptions of language by looking at the construction of ‘English’ in a nonprofit, community-based adult ESOL program in New York. I use ethnographic observation and interviews to uncover the discursive and pedagogical practices that uphold these hegemonic conceptions in this context. I find that the structural conditions of the program perpetuate a conception of ‘English’ shaped by linguistic racism and classism, despite the program’s progressive ideals. Linguistic authority is centralized through the presentation of a closed linguistic system and a focus on replication of templatic language. This allows for the drawing of linguistic borders by pathologizing …

Peel, Pare, Plate, Post: Repository Mise En Place For Collecting Faculty Articles, Adriana Palmer, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

Mise en place (pronounced “meez ahn plahs”) is a term used in professional kitchens to describe the organizing and arranging of the workspace, ingredients, and equipment before beginning to cook. It translates directly from French as “to put in place” (“Mise en Place,” n.d.).

A carefully constructed mise en place is the key to this recipe for adding faculty articles to an institutional repository (IR). Step by step, this recipe details one proven way for a head chef to prepare a scholarly communication kitchen for this project: (1) identifying sous-chefs to assist in the project, (2) gathering ingredients from multiple …

Outpatient Appointment Scheduling Study: Utilization Projection, No-Show Prediction, And Capacity Allocation, Fangzheng Yuan Jan 2021

Outpatient Appointment Scheduling Study: Utilization Projection, No-Show Prediction, And Capacity Allocation, Fangzheng Yuan

Transportation Logistics and Finance

Long waiting times could result in many negative effects, such as low capacity utilization, high patient no-show rates, and loss of social benefits, which will also lead to a waste of public resources. Therefore, to better utilize healthcare resources and serve the community, my dissertation will focus on three objectives: To study the relationship between appointment utilization and indirect waiting time (IWT); to predict the patient’s no-shows without profiling them; to develop an optimization model for appointment capacity allocation. To achieve these objectives, multiple models and approaches have been developed in this dissertation. For the first model, two mixture distribution …

Assessing The Applicability Of Three Approaches To Design-Oriented Research, Jing Zhou, Christopher Kueh, Yi Lin

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The three main approaches in inquisitive research design are qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods [1]. However, recent developments in the research field have resulted in multiple other approaches, borrowing ideas from a broad range of fields. One such approach is the practice-led approach. This approach involves an efficient design process, novel qualitative interviewing methods, together with data mining procedures from quantitative data collection [2]. This paper assesses the practice-led approach used in user experience (UX) design, together with three approaches: co-design, service design, and reflective practice.

The Outcomes Of Fifth-Grade Emergent Bi/Multilinguals’ Introduction To A Visual Metalanguage When Constructing Scientific Explanations In Hong Kong, Melanie Williams, Kok-Sing Tang Jan 2021

The Outcomes Of Fifth-Grade Emergent Bi/Multilinguals’ Introduction To A Visual Metalanguage When Constructing Scientific Explanations In Hong Kong, Melanie Williams, Kok-Sing Tang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The visual mode provides emergent bi/multilinguals an essential resource to construct scientific explanations. Yet, while a metalanguage is used to describe the written mode of scientific language such as, claim, evidence, reason; there is little research that makes students aware of the metalanguage of a visual mode. We propose an introduction to the visual metalanguage will ensure emergent bi/multilinguals better access to the visual mode. This study employs an instrumental case study to examine the introduction of visual metalanguage to a fifth-grade science class. Two cameras record ten emergent bi/multilinguals as they construct scientific explanations in nine lessons. We use …

Supporting The Performance Of Noongar Language In Hecate, Clint Bracknell, Kylie Bracknell, Susan F. Studham, Luzita Fereday

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

As the first adaptation of a complete Shakespearean work presented entirely in one Aboriginal language of Australia, Hecate is a landmark production in Australian theatre. The Noongar language of the southwest of Western Australia is a critically endangered language impacted by colonisation since the early 1800s and suppressed until the 1970s. Working with an all-Noongar cast learning what is by birthright their mother-tongue, the Noongar language, on a full Shakespearean work presents a range of challenges. Consideration of effective rehearsal strategies to support brave spaces for the cast to flourish holistically, both as language learners and performers, was imperative. As …
