As cyberattacks on city and public infrastructures become increasingly common and harmful, it is critical that we train the professional workforce to prepare and respond appropriately. This paper supports the development of educational simulations and related experiential learning exercises that help prepare city and public infrastructure personnel to effectively respond to cybersecurity attacks. Specifically, it synthesizes the findings from 8 expert interviews including 12 cybersecurity experts from federal, state, city organizations, as well as academics with relevant expertise. We organize the findings into key learning outcomes, scenarios, roles, and issues that simulation designers should consider. The result paints a vivid …

As producers diversify to additional audiences, they invite scrutiny of themselves and the products they provide, both by external evaluators as well as peer producers. We argue that in certain conditions, audience diversification may suggest producers represent their producer group, prompting special scrutiny by peers. In these cases, peer evaluation of diversification depends on the correspondence between the identity of the diversifying producer and the collective identity of the producer group, such that peers sanction non-prototypical producers and support exemplary producers. We develop and test hypotheses in the context of science, examining how appeals to the general public—giving a TED …
Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems: Youth Prevention And Cessation Discussions By Primary Care Providers, Sarah Hutton Christianson
Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems: Youth Prevention And Cessation Discussions By Primary Care Providers, Sarah Hutton Christianson
Nursing
Youth use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has increased over the last several years, necessitating proactive steps by primary care providers (PCP) including discussing ENDS health effects with youth and providing cessation counseling. The CDC recommends that people under age 25 should not use ENDS. Brief counseling about use of tobacco products is cost-effective and beneficial to patients’ health. PCPs need current, accurate information about ENDS to deliver comprehensive preventive services and cessation counseling to a vulnerable adolescent population. The purposes of this practice improvement project were to increase PCPs’ knowledge, patient discussions, and cessation referrals related to ENDS …

One in three teens is estimated to experience an anxiety disorder between 13 to 18 years of age. Developed mental health burdens in adolescents can go undetected and untreated. About 50% of those with mental health disorders noted in adulthood started by age 14 years. Therefore, adolescence may be a critical phase for developing positive coping mechanisms and one where nurse practitioners can proactively impact outcomes. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based strategy effective in decreasing mental health burden. Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (COPE) is a program created for pediatrics using CBT strategies to manage emotions and promote …
Increasing Workplace Diversity: Evidence From A Recruiting Experiment At A Fortune 500 Company, Jeffrey A. Flory, Andreas Leibbrandt, Christina Rott, Olga B. Stoddard

While many firms have set ambitious goals to increase diversity in their ranks, there is a dearth of empirical evidence on effective ways to reach them. We use a natural field experiment to test several hypotheses on effective means to attract minority candidates for top professional careers. By randomly varying the content in recruiting materials of a major financial services corporation with more than 10,000 employees, we find that signaling explicit interest in employee diversity more than doubles the interest in openings among racial minority candidates, as well as the likelihood that they apply and are selected. Impacts on gender …
Hippotherapy Sensory Trails In Stewartville, Mn, Madison Long
Hippotherapy Sensory Trails In Stewartville, Mn, Madison Long
Landscape Architecture Theses
This thesis will focus on healthcare and therapeutic design with the major focus being hippo-therapy trails for young individuals with anxiety, depression and Sensory Processing Disorder. Hippo-therapy or equine therapy has been used in Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) for over forty years and continues to grow and evolve. Anxiety and depression are also growing more than ever in young people due to the societal pressures on their generation. The purpose of this thesis is to create a community-based program that combines horseback riding and sensory trails. This trail will be an additional element that is applied to an existing equestrian …

Embodiments disclosed herein relate to solar tracking apparatuses , systems that include the same, and methods of operating the same. An example solar tracking apparatus includes a structure attachment portion configured to be attached to a structure (e.g., a moveable or stationary structure) and to remain relatively stationary relative to the structure. The structure attachment portion may include one or more mounts configured to attach the structure attachment portion to the structure. The solar tracking apparatus also includes at least one solar panel portion coupled to the structure attachment portion. The solar panel portion may be configured to move relative …

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this manuscript is to detail development and initial usability testing of an e-toolkit designed to provide skills and knowledge around self-management behaviors for individuals living with systemic lupus erythematosus.
METHODS: Researchers worked with a steering committee of patients and providers to (1) develop a clickable prototype of an e-toolkit and (2) conduct alpha (individuals not affiliated with an academic clinic as patient or provider) and beta (individual patients with systemic lupus erythematosus as well as members of the clinic healthcare team and individuals who work in patient advocacy organizations) usability testing through semistructured interviews.
RESULTS: During …
Short Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites Manufactured By Stereolithography, Michael John Holthaus
Short Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites Manufactured By Stereolithography, Michael John Holthaus
Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics
The effectiveness of manufacturing short glass fiber composites using stereolithography (SLA) was investigated. Modifications were made to a standard SLA printer to induce a flow field through the resin tank. In this study a 1/32 inch glass fiber content of 15% by volume was printed in combination with a commercial Peopoly SLA UV curable resin. Testing was performed for fiber dispersion and whether the addition of glass fiber would increase the mechanical properties of the composites. While printing it was found the surface finish of the specimens was coarse from the glass fibers. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed to …
Rationally Reconstructed And Attenuated Vaccines For Epidemic Response, Agm Rakibuzzaman
Rationally Reconstructed And Attenuated Vaccines For Epidemic Response, Agm Rakibuzzaman
Microbiological Sciences
Most of the recent viral outbreaks were caused by highly mutating RNA and single stranded DNA viruses. The availability of safe and effective rapid response vaccines early on in an epidemic situation, along with good vaccine delivery systems, is critical for pandemic response plans. Additionally, immunodominance patterns in the host response to epitopes in vaccine antigens can complicate immune responses to vaccines. In this thesis, using porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) as a model, we have focused on changing viral immunodominance patterns to rationally improve vaccine efficacy. We hypothesized that rational alteration of the immunodominant decoy epitope would remove nonprotective …

We conducted a retrospective review of a hybrid antimicrobial restriction process demonstrating adherence to appropriate use criteria in 72% of provisional-only orders, in 100% of provisional orders followed by ID orders, and in 97% of ID-initiated orders. Therapy interruptions occurred in 24% of provisional orders followed by ID orders.
