Antibiotic-Loaded Dendrimer Hydrogels In Periodontal Bone Regeneration: A Feasibility Study, Nicholas G. Yesbeck
Antibiotic-Loaded Dendrimer Hydrogels In Periodontal Bone Regeneration: A Feasibility Study, Nicholas G. Yesbeck
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: Prescription of a complete course of oral antibiotics following bone grafting procedures is a common clinical practice in surgical periodontics. Prophylactic administration of antibiotics reduces the risk of surgical site infection and systemic administration is preferred over local delivery because of short duration of action in the latter circumstance. The goal of this study is to demonstrate the ability of dendrimer hydrogels (DH) to prolong the release kinetics of antibiotics in-vitro. A secondary goal will be to analyze the effect of different particulate bone allografts on the release kinetics of the antibiotic.
Methods: Dendrimer hydrogels (DH) were synthesized …
Understanding Predictors Of Telemedicine Adoption Before, During, And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Bradford S. Pierce
Understanding Predictors Of Telemedicine Adoption Before, During, And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Bradford S. Pierce
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined change in physicians’ use of telemedicine before, during, and expectations after the COVID-19 pandemic. It also examined the ability of personal and environmental variables to predict telemedicine adoption, and applied the theory of reasoned action and technology acceptance model to physicians’ adoption of telemedicine during the pandemic. A total of 230 licensed physicians currently practicing in the United States were recruited. Telemedicine accounted for 3.72% of physicians’ clinical work prior to the pandemic, 46.03% during the pandemic, and predicted 25.44% after the pandemic ends. Physicians within hospitals reported less telemedicine use during the pandemic (M = …
The Impact Of Postmodernism On 21st Century Higher Education, Lia B. Wheatley
The Impact Of Postmodernism On 21st Century Higher Education, Lia B. Wheatley
Liberal Studies (MA) Final Essays
The American undergraduate higher educational institution was organized and developed well over 100 years ago, and for the most part, it was designed around Eurocentric ideals, experiences, and values—ones that hardly reflect the population and principles of a 21st century America. The higher education system is undoubtedly a product of modernism; however, as postmodernism has become more widespread through mainstream society, universities must reevaluate their means and their ends in order to meet transitioning standards and expectations especially if academe hopes to remain a pillar of our ever-progressing society.
The three majorly impacted areas of higher education include enrollment …

Nursing, Physical Therapy, And Cytotechnology Graduate And Undergraduate Students' Attitudes Toward Teamwork Before And After Participation In An Interprofessional Education Experience, Shelley C. Mishoe, Muge Akpinar Elci, Rebecca Poston, Kimberly Adams Tufts, Beth Thompson
Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND Educating health professional (HP) students in environments wherein they can learn about, from, and with each other can prepare them for interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP), which may positively impact patient safety and satisfaction (Brashers et al., 2015; Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative [HPAC], 2019). IPCP is characterized by effective communication, shared values, respect for diverse disciplines and teamwork among health professionals (IOM, 2015). However, professional silos in practice can foster competition rather than collaboration. Knowledge of HP roles and responsibilities is a primary tenet of IPCP (Interprofessional Educational Collaborative [IPEC], 2011).
PURPOSE An interprofessional education (IPE) approach that combined book …

With Great(Er) Power Comes Great(Er) Responsibility: Indigenous Rights And Municipal Autonomy, Alexandra Flynn
All Faculty Publications
This article asks how the dialogue surrounding greater municipal autonomy intersects with Aboriginal rights and title, recognized under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 (Constitution), with a particular focus on Toronto. The first part of this article sets out the ways in which Toronto sought empowerment following the Better Local Government Act or Bill 5, including judicial consideration of the constitutional role of Canadian municipalities, the legislative advances made by provincial governments, and the yet-implemented possibilities of protection through a little-used mechanism within the Constitution. Part II analyzes the obligations of municipalities in respect of Indigenous Peoples …

Exploring Renewable Energy Futures In Humboldt County Consistent With The Goals Of California’S Renewable Portfolio Standard, Amin M. Younes
Exploring Renewable Energy Futures In Humboldt County Consistent With The Goals Of California’S Renewable Portfolio Standard, Amin M. Younes
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Humboldt County has abundant wind, solar, and biomass resources, but has made limited progress towards the state’s 2045 requirement of 100% clean electricity. A recently rejected onshore wind project showed that technically and economically viable projects can fall to social and political challenges, emphasizing the need for social considerations in renewable transitions. I therefore integrated community members’ preferences into modeling of RPS-consistent renewable energy scenarios in Humboldt County. My model suggests that offshore wind, utility-scale solar, distributed solar, and biomass power are technically and economically viable sources of significant local generation at varying costs.
In interviews with energy-engaged residents, I …
May All Teachers Be Happy: A Mindfulness Manual For School Staff, Laura Ella Ashley
May All Teachers Be Happy: A Mindfulness Manual For School Staff, Laura Ella Ashley
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
There are many teachers who leave the profession early due to burnout; furthermore, there are many requirements for teachers to support the social emotional wellness of their students. With training provided to teachers as to how to help students as the norm, and no support for helping the teachers who are burnt out, this project aims to bridge this gap. After facilitating and surveying participants in a mindfulness staff group, the results of this study clearly show that teacher well-being can be supported, and enhanced, with a simple mindfulness support group provided on site to school staff.

A Survey On The Status Of Acceptance And Commitment Training In Rural Northern California, Jacqueline A. Morris
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The interest in acceptance and commitment training (ACT) from within the applied behavior analysis (ABA) community has increased as evidenced by recently published literature addressing the need to examine the acceptability and utilization of ACT within ABA. However, there is limited literature on the perspectives of those working in the field of ABA on the use of ACT. In the present study a survey was conducted of ABA practitioners working in rural northern California to evaluate their level of interest in ACT, their perceptions of ACT being within the scope of practice of ABA, and any perceived challenges in developing …

A Quality Assessment Directory For Evaluating Multi-Functional Public Spaces, M. Salim Ferwati, Ali Keyvanfar, Arezou Shafaghat, Omar Ferwati
Faculty Articles
Public spaces facilitate opportunities for social interaction and promote social life. The social-spatial complexity of public spaces can be explored through the relationship between built forms and users' daily social activities. The contemporary needs of users have retrofitted or replaced the controversial public spaces such as streets, depriving the prime function of sustaining and facilitating social life. Thus, any factors influencing users' social/public life impact the quality of public spaces. Also, contextualization and definition of public spaces necessitate an evaluation of their quality. The lack of a quality assessment directory (QAD) for evaluating multi-functional public spaces motivated us to address …

Joint Optimization Of Target Wake Time Mechanism And Scheduling For Ieee802.11ax, Mehmet Karaca
Joint Optimization Of Target Wake Time Mechanism And Scheduling For Ieee802.11ax, Mehmet Karaca
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
IEEE 802.11ax as the newest wireless local area networks (WLANs) standard brings enormous improvements in network throughput, coverage and energy efficiency in densely populated areas. Unlike previous IEEE 802.11 WLAN standards where power saving mechanisms have a limited capability and flexibility, 802.11ax comes with a different mechanism called target wake time (TWT) where stations (STAs) wake up only after each TWT interval and different STAs can wake up at different time instance depending on their application requirements. As an example, for a periodic data arrival occurring in IoT applications, STA can wake up by following the data period and go …

Impact Of Hybrid Power Generation On Voltage, Losses, And Electricity Cost Indistribution Networks, Yavuz Ateş, Tayfur Gökçek, Ahmet Yi̇ği̇t Arabul
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Energy and its capacity has emerged as one of the biggest distribution challenges all over the world. The existing grid becomes insufficient along with the expansion of the consumption. Therefore, the number of distributed generation (DG) in distribution networks increases and it allows us to sell back the extra energy. However, the efficiency of energy must be maintained into optimal values from the grid to the end-users. In spite of a lot of advantages of DG units, there are some disadvantages like fluctuations in voltage, increments of power losses, wrong protection coordination, harmonic and energy quality issues etc.. If the …

Determination Of Pneumonia In X-Ray Chest Images By Using Convolutionalneural Network, Özlem Polat, Zümray Ölmez, Tamer Ölmez
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Pneumonia is one of the major diseases that cause a lot of deaths all over the world. Determining pneumonia from chest X-ray (CXR) images is an extremely difficult and important image processing problem. The discrimination of whether pneumonia is of bacterium or virus origin has also become more important during the pandemic. Automatic determination of the presence and origin of pneumonia is crucial for speeding up the treatment process and increasing the patient's survival rate. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) framework is proposed for detection of pneumonia from CXR images. Two different binary CNNs and a triple …

Power-Based Modelling And Control: Experimental Results On A Cart-Pole Doubleinverted Pendulum, Tuğçe Yaren, Selçuk Ki̇zi̇r
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper is concerned with the modeling framework based on power and control for a mechanical system that has nonlinear, unstable, and under-actuated characteristic features, based on an analogy, which is developed by using the Brayton and Moser's (BM) equations between mechanical and electrical systems. The analogy is based on a mixed-potential function generalized for BM. The mixed-potential function for a cart - pole double inverted pendulum (CPDIP) system is used as a new building block for modeling, analysis, and controller design. The analogy allows for the exact transfer of results from electrical circuit synthesis and analysis to the mechanical …

Information Retrieval-Based Bug Localization Approach With Adaptive Attributeweighting, Mustafa Erşahi̇n, Semi̇h Utku, Deni̇z Kilinç, Buket Erşahi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Software quality assurance is one of the crucial factors for the success of software projects. Bug fixing has an essential role in software quality assurance, and bug localization (BL) is the first step of this process. BL is difficult and time-consuming since the developers should understand the flow, coding structure, and the logic of the program. Information retrieval-based bug localization (IRBL) uses the information of bug reports and source code to locate the section of code in which the bug occurs. It is difficult to apply other tools because of the diversity of software development languages, design patterns, and development …
Novel Ofdm Transmission Scheme Using Generalized Prefix With Subcarrierindex Modulation, Yusuf Acar
Novel Ofdm Transmission Scheme Using Generalized Prefix With Subcarrierindex Modulation, Yusuf Acar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The cyclic prefix (CP) is a prefix technique widely used in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in order to eliminate the intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by the dispersion of wireless channels. However, CP reduces the number of symbols that can be transmitted in one OFDM symbol. Therefore, CP is one of the bottlenecks of OFDM systems limiting their spectral efficiency (SE). This limitation on the SE of the classical CP-based OFDM system is the main motivation for this work to introduce a novel method. In this paper, the design of a new CP structure, which is based on the …
Analysis Of Optical Gyroscopes With Vertically Stacked Ring Resonators, Dooyoung Hah
Analysis Of Optical Gyroscopes With Vertically Stacked Ring Resonators, Dooyoung Hah
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Without any moving part, optical gyroscopes exhibit superior reliability and accuracy in comparison to mechanical sensors. Microring-resonator-based optical gyroscopes emerged as alternatives for bulky conventional Sagnac interferometer sensors, especially attractive for applications with limited footprints. Previously, it has been reported that planar incorporation of multiple resonators does not bring about improvement in sensitivity for a given area because the increase in Sagnac phase accumulation does not outrun the increase of area. Therefore, it was naturally suggested to consider vertical stacking of ring resonators because then, the resonators can share the same footprint. In this work, sensitivity performances of such configurations …

Adaptation Of Metaheuristic Algorithms To Improve Training Performance Of Aneszsl Model, Şi̇fa Özsari, Mehmet Serdar Güzel, Gazi̇ Erkan Bostanci, Ayhan Aydin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Zero-shot learning (ZSL) is a recent promising learning approach that is similar to human vision systems. ZSL essentially allows machines to categorize objects without requiring labeled training data. In principle, ZSL proposes a novel recognition model by specifying merely the attributes of the category. Recently, several sophisticated approaches have been introduced to address the challenges regarding this problem. Embarrassingly simple approach to zeroshot learning (ESZSL) is one of the critical of those approaches that basically proposes a simple but efficient linear code solution. However, the performance of the ESZSL model mainly depends on parameter selection. Metaheuristic algorithms are considered as …

Development And Validation Of A Scale To Explore Pre-Service Teachers’ Sense Of Preparedness, Engagement And Self-Efficacy In Classroom Teaching, Jessy Abraham, Tania Ferfolja, Aaron Sickel, Anne Power, Christina Curry, Denise Fraser, Karin Mackay
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Raising the quality of initial teacher education can make an important contribution to raising the overall quality of the school system. In Australia, the National Framework for Professional Standards for Teaching is used as a common framework to set standards for the accreditation of teacher education programs. However, institution-wise assessments need to be carried out regularly to explore the quality of preparation pre-service teachers receive and to what extent they feel well prepared to enter teaching. This will enable teacher education programs to implement strategies to strengthen the link between university coursework and professional practice of pre service teachers. This …
Understanding Social-Emotional Reciprocity In Autism: Viewpoints Shared By Teachers, Lizaan Schwartz, Wendi Beamish, Loraine Mckay
Understanding Social-Emotional Reciprocity In Autism: Viewpoints Shared By Teachers, Lizaan Schwartz, Wendi Beamish, Loraine Mckay
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Poor social-emotional reciprocity (SER) has been identified as one of the defining traits of autism. It is a key criterion in recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders editions, DSM-IV and DSM-V (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994, 2013). Yet this difficulty related to socially engaging and interacting with others is poorly understood. The study reported here was a small-scale, qualitative inquiry underpinned by a phenomenological approach in which social-emotional reciprocity (SER) was the phenomenon being studied. Semi-structured interviews with three experienced teachers at an Australian autism-specific school were used to capture their understandings and experiences related to the trait. …
Working The Third Space: Reformulating Practice In The Transition From Classroom Teacher To Teacher Educator, Fleur Diamond, Stephanie Wescott, Kristen Molloy
Working The Third Space: Reformulating Practice In The Transition From Classroom Teacher To Teacher Educator, Fleur Diamond, Stephanie Wescott, Kristen Molloy
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The working lives and identities of teacher educators remain an under-researched aspect of teacher education. This paper reports on a collaborative narrative inquiry by three early career teacher educators as they made the transition from classroom practice in schools, to teacher education in a university setting. The authors confronted technical understandings, or ‘official stories’ (Zukas & Malcolm, 2019) of what it means to prepare prospective teachers, derived from contemporary standards-based policies about teacher professionalism. The paper proposes the concept of ‘working the third space’ as a way of framing teacher educators’ efforts to draw upon classroom teaching experience while challenging …
Rethinking Cyberspace Operations: Widespread Electromagnetic Jamming By States Indicates Cyber Interference Is Not A Use Of Force, Vincent L. Defabo
Rethinking Cyberspace Operations: Widespread Electromagnetic Jamming By States Indicates Cyber Interference Is Not A Use Of Force, Vincent L. Defabo
Journal of Air Law and Commerce
Determining if a cyberspace operation by a State actor is an act of war (i.e., use of force under the U.N. Charter) has led to a misguided approach. In 2012, twenty legal experts that published the Tallinn Manual got it wrong. By utilizing the “effects-based approach” they attempted to equate the effects a cyber operation causes to that of a missile to determine if a use of force has occurred. While their underlying premise, that existing international law should be applied to cyber operations, was sound, the analytical approach is flawed.
This paper explores how the analytical model used by …
International Aviation Law And Pandemic, Timothy Ravich
International Aviation Law And Pandemic, Timothy Ravich
Journal of Air Law and Commerce
Commercial airplanes are vectors of infectious disease, advancing, if not sparking, global epidemics and potentially pandemics by exporting pathogens from endemic areas of the world to non-endemic places. For example, according to the global scientific community, the Zika virus was introduced to the Americas by air travel. Researchers also believe that infected mosquitos on international flights contributed to the worldwide spread of malaria, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, and the West Nile virus. Most recently, governmental authorities worldwide, in addition to issuing national or local shelter-in-place orders, closed their borders and grounded nearly all international air travel on account of the …

You Can Call Me Al: Regulating How Candidates’ Names Appear On Ballots, Peter Nemerovski
Nebraska Law Review
In electoral politics, names matter. Studies and anecdotal evidence show that candidates whose names suggest a certain ethnic heritage— for example, an Irish-sounding surname in Chicago, or a Hispanic name in South Florida—outperform candidates without such names, and that “American-sounding” names and names with positive connotations can give candidates a leg up. Therefore, candidates for public office often seek to run under the name they regard as most electorally advantageous. Election boards, secretaries of state, and ultimately courts are often called upon to decide whether a particular candidate can run for office under a particular name.

Metals, beginning in the 1930s, have been frequently used as the material of choice for aircraft construction (Hallion, 1978; Jakab, 1999). Common metals used in the aviation industry range from alloyed and heat-treated aluminum to titanium, magnesium, and superalloys, the latter used in specialized applications (Hallion, 1978; Mouritz, 2012). Nevertheless, a shift in aircraft construction – specifically in terms of the materials used – began in the 1970s, as composite materials were introduced into commercial aircraft (Mouritz, 2012). Among others, the increased use of composited materials was – and still is – propelled by the ability to manufacture comparative lightweight …
