Explaining Florida Man, Ira P. Robbins Oct 2021

Explaining Florida Man, Ira P. Robbins

Florida State University Law Review

"Tlorida Man" is a popular cultural phenomenon in which journalists report on Floridians' unusual (and often criminal) behavior, and readers relish in and share the stories, largely on social media. A meme based on Florida Man news stories emerged in 2013 and continues to capture people's attention nationwide. Florida Man is one of the latest unique trends to come from the Sunshine State and contributes to Florida's reputation as a quirky place. Explanations for Florida Man center on Florida's Public Records Law, which is known as one of the most expansive open records laws in the country. All states and …

Review Of Liberia, South Carolina: An African American Appalachian Community, By John M. Coggeshall, Cicero Fain Oct 2021

Review Of Liberia, South Carolina: An African American Appalachian Community, By John M. Coggeshall, Cicero Fain

History Faculty Research

Examining 150 years of history of a small, rural African American community, John M. Coggeshall’s Liberia, South Carolina: An African American Appalachian Community, contributes to recent studies elevating Black Appalachian voices, perspectives, and cultures previously historically elided. Located in Pickens County in the Blue Ridge region of western South Carolina, Liberia, like a lot of rural communities, exists less “as a legally defined entity and more a culturally defined area of recognized neighborly ties.”

Wireless Transmissions: Early Russian Radio And Modernist Poetics, Ana Berdinskikh Oct 2021

Wireless Transmissions: Early Russian Radio And Modernist Poetics, Ana Berdinskikh

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines the first era of mass wireless communication in Russia, and the ways in which emerging media technologies shaped and intersected with cultural production in the early twentieth century. In this project, I study a series of authors and artists who participated in a growing technological discourse, as they wrote, debated and conceived of methods to achieve “direct” and “instantaneous” communication that exceeded the capabilities of written text. Through their poems, fiction, lithographs and collages, these artists explored the role that wireless telegraphy and radio played in shaping conceptions of spatial and temporal limitations, and how these devices …

Viral Subjects: Stigma, Civil Society Activism, And The Making Of Hiv/Aids In Lebanon, Elizabeth Berk Oct 2021

Viral Subjects: Stigma, Civil Society Activism, And The Making Of Hiv/Aids In Lebanon, Elizabeth Berk

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines HIV/AIDS in Lebanon. It asks how people living with this illness do so in light of civil society activism to overcome social stigma associated with HIV/AIDS and related issues. The first full-length ethnographic study of HIV/AIDS in the Middle East region, research for this project was conducted at various periods throughout 2015-2018 at civil society organizations, among physicians, and among people living with HIV. This dissertation employs the research techniques of semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and media analysis. It argues, overall, that the subjectivities of those living with, treating, and advocating for HIV/AIDS cannot be understood without …

Architectures Of The Humanitarian Front, 1915-1930 The American Red Cross And The Refugee Settlement Commission Of The League Of Nations, Theodossios Issaias

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines a period around WWI when conflict, displacement, and territorial insecurity provoked the reconfiguration of humanitarian operations –their spatial organization and ethical imperatives. Between the 1910s and 1930s, a flurry of humanitarian activity emerged, old institutions were restructured, new institutions were formed, and new methods of action crystalized, entrenching representations, languages, and practices that have stayed with us ever since. The dissertation begins with an examination of the American Red Cross (ARC, 1881-), as it transformed from a relatively unknown philanthropic society into the only recognized relief organization responsible for administering foreign aid on the country’s behalf. Contingent …

The Politics Of Play: Digital Youth, New Media, And Social Movement In Contemporary Vietnam, Tri Phuong Oct 2021

The Politics Of Play: Digital Youth, New Media, And Social Movement In Contemporary Vietnam, Tri Phuong

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Abstract The Politics of Play:Digital Youth, New Media, and Social Movement in Contemporary Vietnam Tri Mac Phuong 2021 This dissertation examines the role of media and the mediascape of contemporary Vietnam some 40 years after national reunification as provocation, palimpsest, and portent to a number of citizen-subject formations, sociopolitical negotiations, and cultural upheavals. In particular, I look at how the Internet and related digital technologies influence urban youth’s civic life, communal ties, and social imaginations, and how these so-called new media intersect and interact with older forms of media at particular conjunctures to produce new values, beliefs, habits, functions, and …

Pictures As Mirrors For Shah Tahmasb: How Manuscript Paintings Shaped Court Culture In Early Modern Iran, Selin Unluonen Oct 2021

Pictures As Mirrors For Shah Tahmasb: How Manuscript Paintings Shaped Court Culture In Early Modern Iran, Selin Unluonen

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation investigates how sixteenth-century manuscript paintings shaped courtly identity and behavior at a time of sweeping political change in Iran. During the first half of the sixteenth century, rulers of the new Safavid dynasty in Iran commissioned richly illustrated manuscripts. Turning to a corpus of paintings from a royal copy of the medieval Persian epic Khamsa, this study examines these paintings in light of the numerous extratextual inscriptions incorporated into the pictorial world (an unstudied body of evidence despite the book’s renown), and puts them in dialogue with autobiographical writings, court chronicles, diplomatic letters, and literary anthologies from the …

Is Servant Leadership Just For Western Cultures? Complexities, Gaps, And Challenges, Samuel Chaise Oct 2021

Is Servant Leadership Just For Western Cultures? Complexities, Gaps, And Challenges, Samuel Chaise

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

Servant leadership was originally proposed as an ethical way of leading and has become a near-synonym for Christian leadership. This is problematic, however, because cultures with differing “power distance” vary regarding their view of the ethical use of power in leadership. Further, most of the research and writing on servant leadership has been conducted in Western, professionalized cultures. This article proposes that the way servant leadership is currently being conceptualized is not applicable to all cultural settings, which may mean that there are other “Christian” ways to lead.

Ant 130: Introduction To Biological Anthropology Syllabus (Fall 2021), Britney Kyle

Open Course Materials

This is a science course on human evolution exploring what makes our species unique, strange, and wonderful. We will first learn the biological mechanisms underlying evolution and natural selection. Next, we will look at modern primate variation today (including humans) and learn how to use primates as models to help us learn about the behavior, environments, and lifeways of extinct species. Third, we will interpret data from the human fossil record to understand where, how, when, and in what way modern humans evolved. Finally, we will examine specific modern human traits through this evolutionary lens to build arguments for how …

Edel 455: Approaches To Content Literacy For Diverse Learners (Fall 2021), Deborah Agar

Open Course Materials

This course builds upon previous literacy coursework to explore how to develop students’ content literacy, with special attention to culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners. It provides theoretical foundations for conceptualizing language and literacy learning that are rooted in Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR), sociocultural theory, and systemic functional linguistics. Central course learning activities include: (1) practicing effective strategies for supporting students’ literacy development across content areas; (2) deconstructing school-based texts to analyze how text structure and language features relate to purpose, audience, and voice; and (3) designing content/language integrated lessons. Throughout this course, students will also become familiar with …
