Texas Hospitality: Pro-Refugee Activism, Volunteerism, And Coalition-Building In Xenophobic Times, Sara Mosher

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

This project employs ethnographic methods to explore the experiences of forty ordinary Texans of different social and religious backgrounds who were active in pro-refugee volunteer and advocacy work during the four chaotic years of the Trump administration. The goal of this research is to better understand people’s reasons for volunteering and advocating on behalf of refugees during a time of political upheaval, when prominent public figures in positions of leadership around the country have repeatedly framed refugees as a threat to American security and cultural identity. Despite the crucial roles that local volunteers typically play in the process of refugee …

Modern Representations Of Childbirth In American Comedy Television Shows, Emily Smith Oct 2021

Modern Representations Of Childbirth In American Comedy Television Shows, Emily Smith

Senior Theses

This is a concurrent, mixed methods pilot study that combines quantitative analysis and qualitative observations with the aim of examining the portrayal of childbirth in modern American comedy shows. 38 episodes airing from 2010 to 2020 (n=38) were analyzed according to objective elements of representation (e.g., location of birth, interventions employed, etc.), as well as coded for common themes. Quantitative data revealed that the most represented births in comedy shows on American television from the 2010s were vaginal (82.1%), in the hospital (69.2%), uncomplicated (66%), and represented technological interventions (66%). Qualitative analysis found six main themes: chaos surrounding childbirth; disgust …

Pacific Studies

We examine in this critical essay a sung and danced poetry of tragedy by Kaliopasi Fe‘iloakitau Kaho about the people of Ha‘apai leaving for Tongatapu in search for their king Tāufa‘āhau. By making good use of the three types of heliaki, “metaphorically saying one thing but historically meaning another,” he talks about the deep sadness of the people of Ha‘apai, in thinking and feeling they have been deserted, promoting them to leave in search of their most beloved. Out of both frustration and desperation, they were determined and committed to embark on their mission, using whatever means and irrespective of …

Exploration Of Lived Experiences Of Science Teachers Of English Language Learners: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Uma Ganesan Oct 2021

Exploration Of Lived Experiences Of Science Teachers Of English Language Learners: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Uma Ganesan

The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal

English language learners (ELLs) are a talented pool of culturally and linguistically diverse students who are persistently increasing both in absolute size and percentage in the U.S. school population; however, they are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in college as well as in the workforce (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018). Education and scientific communities have found it challenging to improve students’ participation in STEM fields (Martinez et al., 2011). Exploring science teachers’ experiences could aid in improving academic achievement of ELLs and promoting educational equity. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study is …

Place-Based Educational Development: What Center For Teaching And Learning Spaces Look Like (And Why That Matters), Laura Cruz, Karen Huxtable-Jester, Brian Smentkowski, Martin Springborg

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This study seeks to explore the physical spaces centers for teaching and learning (CTLs) occupy; with an emphasis on gaining a better picture of what CTL spaces look like; where they are located; how they developed: and what these spaces represent. We gathered visual, empirical, and qualitative data to take the first steps towards developing a shared vision of not only of our physical spaces, but also as a jumping off point for further analysis of the CTL as a meaningful place.

The Rise Of The Cosmetic Industry In Ancient China: Insights From A 2700‐Year‐Old Face Cream, B. Han, J. Chong, Z. Sun, X. Jiang, Q. Xiao, J. Zech, P. Roberts, H. Rao, Y. Yang

KIP Articles

Cosmetics have a long history in China, but their origins remain unclear. Cosmetic industry potentially originated in the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 bce ), but little is known about the early manufacture and use of cosmetics. The Liujiawa site, located on the southern edge of the Loess Plateau in northern China, was the late capital of the ancient Rui state in the early to mid‐Spring and Autumn Period. During the excavation, a sealed small and exquisite container with suspected cosmetic use was unearthed from tomb M49 belonging to a male associated with the aristocratic class. We report in this …

Experiences In Archaeology, Social Justice, And Democratic Principles: The 2016-2019 Archaeological Field School At The University Of Hawai'i West O'Ahu, William Belcher, Suzanne Falgout, Joyce Chinen, Robert Kalani Carriera, Johanna Fuller

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

From 2016 to 2019, the University of Hawai‘i West O‘ahu conducted archaeological field schools at Honouliuli National Historic Site to teach our students basic archaeological skills. Because the site was the largest Japanese and Japanese American concentration camp on O‘ahu, the field school initiated a program related to social justice and democratic principles for the imprisonment of US citizens and legal residents based on racial and national profiling. The demography of O‘ahu created a special bond to the incarcerees’ stories and the students of Asian and Hawaiian descent. Through field trips, student discussion, and curriculum development, we focused on the …

Ethnomusicology, Ethnocentrism, And The Other, Elizabeth Rockwell Oct 2021

Ethnomusicology, Ethnocentrism, And The Other, Elizabeth Rockwell

Munn Scholars Awards

Western academic literature exploring global music frequently perpetuates stereotypes about nonWestern music and countries. This stems from the implicit bias of Western scholars and musicians as well as the dominance of Western music in the U.S. and Europe. Resultant from this bias and these stereotypes is the exoticizing of non-Western music and nations that contributes to the “Otherness” that plagues ethnomusicological scholarship. This “othering” occurs despite the stated purpose of the field of ethnomusicology, which is to look beyond the music being produced and to instead focus on the cultural context in which it was produced. Thus, the state of …

Cases of physiological and psychological health disorders in the generation succeeding generation of the 1994 genocide are rising at an alarming pace. The presented work herein details a qualitative and quantitative approach to understanding the transmission of trauma from the surviving population of the 1994 Genocide Against Tutsi in their offspring using the APA PTSD System Scale-Interview (PSS-I). Several variables including age, gender and background were employed in this study. The results indicate that offspring born of targeted survivors of the 1994 Genocide Against Tutsi show increased trends of experiencing PTSD symptoms with children born in 1994 exhibiting the greatest …

Harvesting The Truth About Salt Mining: An Assessment Of The Factors And Demographics That Influence Women To Become Salt Miners, Katwe Uganda, Amelia Simmonds Oct 2021

Harvesting The Truth About Salt Mining: An Assessment Of The Factors And Demographics That Influence Women To Become Salt Miners, Katwe Uganda, Amelia Simmonds

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Traditional and rudimentary methods of salt mining have been used to harvest salt from Lake Katwe in Uganda for over 400 years. Even though these methods are effective in extracting salt, they are proven to be hazardous to the miners. Though not often acknowledged, the role of women in salt mining operations is significant as they make up half of the workforce in East Africa. Regardless of the health risks associated with the mining sector, the number of women involved in small-scale salt mining increases by the year. The main objective of this study was to gain a better understanding …

Physician’S Assistants As Agents Of Change: Advocating For Bilingual And Culturally Competent Health Care Resources In The Central Kentucky Hispanic Latino Community, Britany Guerrero Oct 2021

Physician’S Assistants As Agents Of Change: Advocating For Bilingual And Culturally Competent Health Care Resources In The Central Kentucky Hispanic Latino Community, Britany Guerrero

Honors Theses

The Hispanic Latino population is the fastest growing ethnic population that is experiencing barriers to receive healthcare. Throughout my Honors Thesis I will identify: the lack of resources in Central Kentucky pertaining to healthcare, the flaws in our healthcare system that are affecting our Latino Community, the need for healthcare professionals with bilingual competency, and how PA’s can better serve our Latino Community. I will be using research and my experience through service learning with a Physician Assistant in the local Latino community to critically analyze the current situation and provide data-driven solutions. The purpose of bringing this topic to …

Factors That Influence The Choice To Major In Stem For Latino And Non-Latino Students And Professionals, Ivan Olivas Oct 2021

Factors That Influence The Choice To Major In Stem For Latino And Non-Latino Students And Professionals, Ivan Olivas

Honors Theses

Latinos are the largest minority group in the United States, with 18.5 percent of the nation’s population. However, when it comes to Latinos in STEM, they represent only 8 percent of all STEM workers. This disparity can be largely traced to disproportionally low numbers in graduation rates in high school and college, in conjunction with the lack of exposure to STEM fields and access to rigorous K-12 curriculums associated with STEM pathways. The survey incorporated into this research investigates which factors influence Latinos in choosing a STEM major. The survey questions focused on high school academics, parental educational attainment, home …
