Editorial Introduction, Lisa Silvestri

Journal of Hate Studies

For the past fifteen years I have written almost exclusively about American warfare in some capacity. As a Communication Studies scholar, my interest in war stems from its exemplary failure. War is communication through force; it is a last resort. As I continue to think, write, and reflect on the subject, I recognize that at the heart of my fascination with war is its inducement. How do we arrive at a warlike mind? On top of that, knowing what we know about war’s horror and trauma, why do we keep doing it? I’m not sure I will ever arrive at …

Envy And Resentment In The Time Of Coronavirus, Sara Protasi Oct 2021

Envy And Resentment In The Time Of Coronavirus, Sara Protasi

Journal of Hate Studies

I examine the role played by the emotions of envy and resentment in interpersonal online dynamics during the COVID19 pandemic. I start by reviewing what we know about the interplay of social media use, social comparison and well-being, and by applying this knowledge to current circumstances. Then, I introduce some philosophical distinctions that complicate the already complex empirical evidence, differentiating, in particular, between envy and resentment, and between different kinds of envy. I argue that we can use the knowledge of these distinctions to better cope with these painful, but sometimes productive and always informative, emotions.

Justification By Race: Wesley Swift’S White Supremacy And Anti-Semitic Theological Views In His Christian Identity Sermons, Ana Bochicchio Oct 2021

Justification By Race: Wesley Swift’S White Supremacy And Anti-Semitic Theological Views In His Christian Identity Sermons, Ana Bochicchio

Journal of Hate Studies

This article explores the discourses of Minister Wesley Albert Swift (1913–1970), one of the original and leading proponents of Christian Identity, a racial theology movement which emerged in the United States after World War II. It is not the aim of this study to analyze the discourse of Christian Identity as an isolated element, but to understand its interrelation with the political-religious culture of the country during the 1950s and 1960s. Christian Identity rhetoric may be understood based on its socio-historical context. During the formulative years of Christian Identity, nuclear anxieties, along with the fear of Communist infiltration, were deeply …

Human-Computer Interaction Research And Education--Crossing Boundaries Between Academic Research And Industry Practices, Yasushi Akiyama Oct 2021

Human-Computer Interaction Research And Education--Crossing Boundaries Between Academic Research And Industry Practices, Yasushi Akiyama

Interface: The C3 Lab Knowledge Commons

In this paper, I will discuss my own experience and approaches to enhancing students' learning in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) classes by adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates academic research and industry practice. Due to the inherent interdisciplinarity of HCI, and to foster a set of "soft" skills known in Interdisciplinary Studies as the "cognitive toolkit," I invite expertise from the other departments at my university as well as industry professionals to give lectures, facilitate workshops, and oversee projects. These collaborations have produced several insights and have had a positive impact on the participants.

Mentalités And The Search For Total History In The Works Of Annalistes, Foucault, And Microhistory, Jason U. Rose Oct 2021

Mentalités And The Search For Total History In The Works Of Annalistes, Foucault, And Microhistory, Jason U. Rose

The Hilltop Review

In this brief essay, the links between the Annales, the works of Michael Foucault, and microhistory are analyzed through the theoretical lens of histoire des mentalités (mentalités). Common threads that link these approaches include the willingness of using outside fields of analysis as well as the willingness to work with vagueness in search of those who Foucault calls, “lost people.” Relatedly, each of these groups and individuals are willing to analyze all aspects of the historical record to fully understand the minds, cultures, and histories of past people. The key to recognizing the relationship of these approaches involve knowing and …

“Never Again Is Now ” Use Of Cultural Frames In A Social Movement Organization, Erik Paul Carlson Oct 2021

“Never Again Is Now ” Use Of Cultural Frames In A Social Movement Organization, Erik Paul Carlson

Theses and Dissertations

The immigrant rights movement is a social movement that has been active in the United States for many decades and adopted as well as changed focus over time. There are many social movement organizations working within this social movement but one of great interest to my research is Never Again Action (NAA). NAA is a national Jewish protest group, which has called for the end to all deportations and the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). NAA is primarily working from a position of an ally to migrants in a social movement with the aim to further rights for …

Fundamentals Of Anthropology As Effective Experiential Learning Strategy To Promote Social Justice, Chelsea G. Abbas Oct 2021

Fundamentals Of Anthropology As Effective Experiential Learning Strategy To Promote Social Justice, Chelsea G. Abbas

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Experiential learning (EL) as it relates to the social sciences, involves going out into the community to conduct field studies or work with different groups who provide new approaches and collaborative perspectives to student learning. EL relies on the fact that students can communicate with distinct populations and oftentimes bridge cultural, linguistic, racial, generational, or geographical divides. As we emerge from a pandemic-induced social isolation into an increasingly siloed and divided political world, creating generative dialogue and skill sets to promote social activism and empathy for the common good is of utmost importance, especially for college students. Two EL experiences, …

Making Explicit Connections Between Experiential Learning And Justice: New Approaches To Teaching And Learning Through An Imagination For Justice, Patrick M. Green Oct 2021

Making Explicit Connections Between Experiential Learning And Justice: New Approaches To Teaching And Learning Through An Imagination For Justice, Patrick M. Green

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

Excerpt

Beyond simply being a form of active learning, experiential learning, in its many iterations, has been promoted as a philosophy, a community development model, a theory, a professional skill training opportunity, a global education and civic development approach, and a pedagogical strategy that leads to deep, high impact learning. Indeed, experiential learning has become increasingly specialized in the last several decades with the evolution of numerous sub-fields, such as study abroad and global immersion programs, outdoor education programs, community-based learning (both domestic and global service-learning), internship and work-integrated learning, undergraduate research experiences, and a myriad of other high-impact learning …

Social Control And Incarceration In Lesotho: A History Of Strategies, 1850-1970, Samuel John Severson Oct 2021

Social Control And Incarceration In Lesotho: A History Of Strategies, 1850-1970, Samuel John Severson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation explores how technologies and infrastructures for promoting control and cohesion have interfaced with the social and political history of Lesotho over the longue durée. This approach allows for tracing lines of historical continuity and change during a period spanning the coalescing of the nation from communities on the Southern African Highveld in the early-19th century, the onset and grinding realities of British colonial rule and the rise of a local economy dependent on labor migration to South Africa, and the unravelling of empire and the challenges of governance in the years following official national liberation in 1966. I …

Leveraging New Technologies And Interdisciplinarity To Study Political Behavior, Attitudes, And Beliefs, John Ternovski Oct 2021

Leveraging New Technologies And Interdisciplinarity To Study Political Behavior, Attitudes, And Beliefs, John Ternovski

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

I make use of new technological and scholarly developments to study political sentiments and behavior in three independent papers. In my lead paper, I address an important consequence of political deepfakes (i.e., computer-manipulated video misinformation): does the provision of information about deepfakes cause people to disbelieve real political videos? Through a set of online survey experiments, I find that information that is typical of news coverage of deepfakes induces people to disbelieve real political information. My second paper uses new social media datasets to address pressing questions about how organized American far-right groups (e.g., neo-Nazis, white supremacists, etc.) recruit new …

Commerce And Justice: Ottoman And Venetian Courts In Istanbul During The Seventeenth Century, Tommaso Stefini Oct 2021

Commerce And Justice: Ottoman And Venetian Courts In Istanbul During The Seventeenth Century, Tommaso Stefini

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

"Commerce and Justice: Ottoman and Venetian Courts in Istanbul during the Seventeenth Century” analyzes legal disputes and economic transactions between Ottoman and Venetian merchants in Istanbul on a daily basis between 1600 and1620. At that time, the Venetians constituted the largest European community in the Ottoman capital, and they engaged intensively in trade ventures with Ottoman businessmen belonging to different religious and ethnic communities, including Muslim Turks, Sephardic Jews, and Orthodox Greeks. This dissertation asks how Ottomans and Venetians cooperated in commercial undertakings and solved controversies despite the absence of a system of inter-polity law and secular legal regimes in …

Fitting Women To Their Work: The Vocational Vision Of Helen M. Bennett, Lisa R. Lindell Oct 2021

Fitting Women To Their Work: The Vocational Vision Of Helen M. Bennett, Lisa R. Lindell

Hilton M. Briggs Library Faculty Publications

"A WOMAN CAN DO ANYTHING IF SHE PUTS HER MIND ON IT."' This conviction propelled the career choices of Helen Marie Bennett in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the vocational message she communicated. Bennett commenced her wide-ranging life's pursuits in western South Dakota, where she was raised, and brought them to culmination in Chicago, where she became a leader in the emerging field of vocational guidance. She firmly believed that all paths should be open to women and that women had a responsibility to find and follow their own vocation. Bennett's life experiences and interests sparked and …
