Russian Peasants In Tolstoy’S War And Peace - Idealized And Instrumentalized, Antonia Seyfarth
Russian Peasants In Tolstoy’S War And Peace - Idealized And Instrumentalized, Antonia Seyfarth
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
In War and Peace, Tolstoy challenges Western European notions of Russian backwardness and ‘barbarity’ through his depiction of the virtuousness, spiritual wisdom, and rich cultural traditions of the common Russian people. This idealized portrayal of Russian peasants and soldiers is essential to Tolstoy’s construction of a Russian national myth that unites members of all social classes behind a shared set of values. However, in turning the Russian peasantry into idealized, oversimplified caricatures that lack individuality, complexity, agency, and the ability for critical thought, Tolstoy reduces these characters to mere instruments that provide morally edifying lessons to Russia’s elites. This imposition …
Argo: Cia Influence And American Jingoism, Andrea De Oliveira
Argo: Cia Influence And American Jingoism, Andrea De Oliveira
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
“Argo: CIA Influence and American Jingoism” focuses on the ways in which CIA involvement in the production and publicity of Ben Affleck’s Argo (2012) yielded a biased representation of the Iranian public. Throughout the film, Affleck pictures Iranians as aggressive and deindividualized, spreading the trope of the Middle Eastern fanatic to viewers worldwide. While villainizing the Iranian public, Argo undermines a fraught history of United States intervention in Iran. Although Affleck takes several liberties in cinematizing the Iranian Hostage Crisis, Argo masquerades as a historical authority, peppered with markers of authenticity such as newsreel footage. I argue that the film …
Western And Chinese Medicine In The History Of Community-Based Care In San Francisco’S Chinatown, Grace Chen
Western And Chinese Medicine In The History Of Community-Based Care In San Francisco’S Chinatown, Grace Chen
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
In fear-inciting epidemic, disease has often led to the disproportionate injury of minority communities through lack of equal access to medical care and implementation of prejudiced policies disguised as public health. In the United States, the use of infectious disease as a vehicle for the targeted suppression of Chinese Americans is no new phenomenon, from the discriminatory reactions to the 1900 San Francisco plague outbreak to the escalation of racial violence in the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Here, I explore how Chinese immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries responded to inadequate public health care in San Francisco, including …
The Misunderstood Monstrous: An Analysis Of The Word “Monster” In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Caroline Benedetti
The Misunderstood Monstrous: An Analysis Of The Word “Monster” In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein, Caroline Benedetti
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Although Mary Shelley invented her chimerical creature in Frankenstein over 200 years ago, the Being still thrives within modern horror mythology. Recognizing that filmmakers, authors, and the characters within the original book itself often refer to Victor’s creation as a “monster”, this essay seeks to investigate how the application of this word impacts Shelley’s work. While the Being assumes many monstrous characteristics, from his abnormal body–built from a conglomeration of parts–to his murderous behavior, he often shows a softer side, driven by human desire. However, individuals with whom the Being interacts with repeatedly reduce him to the role of a …
A Midsummer Night’S Vr: An Exploration Of Virtual Reality Theater, Paige Hann, Nathan Roberts
A Midsummer Night’S Vr: An Exploration Of Virtual Reality Theater, Paige Hann, Nathan Roberts
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Virtual reality (VR) is a medium predicated on immersivity. It therefore has implications for a similarly immersive field – live theater. The benefits of live theater are numerous. However, not everyone has the same access to theater for a variety of reasons, including cost and mental and physical health. Could VR serve as a legitimate alternative to live theater? Investigating this question, we utilized the resources of the Yale’s CCAM to create a virtual reality adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. Research shows that our brains process VR differently from either real-world stimulus or two-dimensional monitors. VR …
Jewish Ancestral Languages And Communicating The Sephardic Experience: The Judeospanish Of Tela De Sevoya, Julia Kahn
Jewish Ancestral Languages And Communicating The Sephardic Experience: The Judeospanish Of Tela De Sevoya, Julia Kahn
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Judeo-Spanish, the ancestral language of Sephardic Jews, enjoys fewer speakers, literature, and less scholarly attention compared to Yiddish, its counterpart spoken by Ashkenazi Jews. Nonetheless, Judeo-Spanish captures the rich experiences of its speakers through exile, persecution, and perseverance, embodying unique Jewish-Spanish culture and religious practice. It has received fresh recognition in the last two centuries from scholars and Sephardim themselves, and the quincentennial of the 1492 Jewish expulsion from Spain inspired a new Sephardic autobiographical genre, where Sephardic authors grapple with their heritages and language, dimming from assimilation and the Shoa. Myriam Moscona is one such author whose unique descent …
For A New Ethics Of Reading: Analyzing Tea In The Harem’S Reception, Hannah Kwak
For A New Ethics Of Reading: Analyzing Tea In The Harem’S Reception, Hannah Kwak
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper examines the extratextual materials that reified the novel/film Tea in the Harem as an archive of knowledge about the beur community. I argue that Tea in the Harem was subjected to what I call an anthropological approach to literature, a reading practice which instrumentalizes and subordinates the text to the historical reality which it is said to represent. Though in many ways entangled with the principles of French republicanism, the reception of Tea in the Harem is symptomatic of a more general phenomenon in which literatures of “the other” are expected to rehabilitate, educate, and civilize the majority …
Did They Consent? A Call To Practice Empathy On Animal Testing, Yao Yao
Did They Consent? A Call To Practice Empathy On Animal Testing, Yao Yao
Alfie Scholars Conferences
About 26 million animals are used for scientific or cosmetic testing in the United States every year, and about 95% of these animals are not protected by the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA), according to non profit organization ProCon. A study conducted by Pew Research center shows that 89% of scientists favor animal testing. Animal testing benefits humans in many ways and has been a popular approach in for many scientists, but it is not necessarily ethical to continue. In this presentation, I would like to explore the current situation on animal testing, reasons why animal testing is unethical, what …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The objective of this study performed in the Atlantic forest region of the South of Bahia (Brazil) was to examine the influence of the presence of the forage legume Desmodium ovalifolium in pastures of Brachiaria humidicola on the nitrogen recycled through plant litter over stocking rates of 2, 3 and 4 head ha-1. The results demonstrated that the presence of the D. ovalifolium in the pasture significantly increased the protein content of the associated Brachiaria grass, and the rate and quantity of N recycled through the litter pathway. While had no significant increase in animal weight gain due …

Production Of Orchard-Grass Cultivars (Dactylis Glomerata) In Mixtures With Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa), Under Grazing Conditions, R. A. Barbarossa, D. P. Miñón
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In the Lower Valley of the Río Negro (northern Patagonia, Argentina), six binary mixtures of orchard-grass (Dactylis glomerata) cultivars (Porto, Currie, Filox, a Local ecotype, Pergamino El Cencerro MAG) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) Monarca SP INTA, were tested under grazing and irrigation. Mixtures were evaluated during three growing seasons (96/97; 97/98 and 98/99). Total forage production of mixtures and botanical composition was measured (orchard-grass cultivars and alfalfa). Porto, Currie, Filox, Local and Cencerro cultivars reached similar yield, while Amba produced less forage (p< 0.05). Mixture yield showed no significant difference, except Porto + alfalfa, which was lower (p< 0.05). The grass was higher in spring (1st grazing) of three growing seasons. Orchard-grass + alfalfa showed highest dry matter …

Carbon monoxide as an endogenous signaling molecule exhibits pharmacological efficacy in various animal models of organ injury. To address the difficulty in using CO gas as a therapeutic agent for widespread applications, we are interested in developing CO prodrugs through bioreversible caging of CO in an organic compound. Specifically, we have explored the decarboxylation-decarbonylation chemistry of 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds. Examination and optimization of factors favorable for maximal CO release under physiological conditions led to organic CO prodrugs using non-calorific sweeteners as leaving groups attached to the 1,2-dicarbonyl core. Attaching a leaving group with appropriate properties promotes the desired hydrolysis-decarboxylation-decarbonylation sequence of …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Brain stimulation has emerged as a powerful tool in human neuroscience, becoming integral to next-generation psychiatric and neurologic therapeutics. Theta-burst stimulation (TBS), in which electrical pulses are delivered in rhythmic bouts of 3-8 Hz, seeks to recapitulate neural activity seen endogenously during cognitive tasks. A growing literature suggests that TBS can be used to alter or enhance cognitive processes, but little is known about how these stimulation events influence underlying neural activity.
OBJECTIVE: Our study sought to investigate the effect of direct electrical TBS on mesoscale neural activity in humans by asking (1) whether TBS evokes persistent theta oscillations …

Apiculture Adaptations In A Shifting World: The Beekeeper’S Experience Across The Globe, Katherine Lloyd
Apiculture Adaptations In A Shifting World: The Beekeeper’S Experience Across The Globe, Katherine Lloyd
Capstone Collection
Existing research suggests that changes in climate, such as rainfall and temperature shifts, will threaten bees’ main food sources and cause detrimental impacts on apiculture globally. Despite this, to the best of the author’s knowledge, there is little available by way of research relating to how beekeepers themselves experience these increased pressures to their practices. This research project investigated the experiences of beekeepers in the United States, Malawi, and Cameroon. Surveys of US beekeepers, and interviews with Malawian and Cameroonian beekeepers were coded for emergent themes and surveys were analyzed via descriptive statistics. Major differences in challenges reported by beekeepers …

Hedgehogs And Hyenas: Peculiar Animals Of Ancient Egypt, Elliotte Thurtle
Studia Antiqua
This essay discusses archeological information gained from the study of Egyptian artifacts, specifically focused on hedgehogs and hyenas. The aim of this paper is to expand our understanding of these animals in the day-to-day lives of Egyptians from this period, and further clarify the symbolism that they hold. Understanding the importance of less common animals within ancient Egyptian religion and symbolism is vital to understanding how the average person lived and interacted with the world around them.
Sacred Writing And Magic Metal: The High Priest's Holy Crown As A Protective Amulet, Abigail Booth
Sacred Writing And Magic Metal: The High Priest's Holy Crown As A Protective Amulet, Abigail Booth
Studia Antiqua
What forces, practices, rituals, or objects worked to safeguard the ancient Israelite sanctuary against evil and harm? Archaeological and textual evidence suggests that the high priest’s golden crown may have been an apotropaic amulet worn to protect the high priest and the holy space. Magical practices described in the Bible are illuminated by the presence of apotropaic ritual and amulets in wider Near Eastern society. Metallic amulets such as those found at Ketef Hinnom were utilized to protect the wearer in the name of the deity. In inscriptions, sacred writing invoked the name of YHWH to guard a sanctuary. The …
International Grassland Congress Outlook – A Historical Review And Future Expectations, L. R. Humphreys
International Grassland Congress Outlook – A Historical Review And Future Expectations, L. R. Humphreys
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Features of the history of the International Grassland Congress are mentioned. Aspects of a number of failed themes in grassland science are described with respect to molecular biology, intensive systems of ruminant production, carbohydrate use in plant growth, plant succession and range condition, and stocking method. Future expectations are focused on meeting a balance of objectives, maintaining reductionist science, taking new initiatives in plant improvement and in the development of animal production systems, and reducing barriers to international trade. The adoption of grassland science depends upon the growth of new learning, especially through cyclical interaction between scientists and farmers.

Grassland Production And Management – Trends And Perspectives For The 21St Century, John Hodgson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The XIX International Congress is set in a time of unprecedented change, with increasing uncertainty about the long-term sustainability of established systems of land use. The major threats are the continuing rapid increase in the human population of the world, the pressure on land resources to meet food requirements, the effects of global warming on climate stability, and the consequence of these factors on land resource stability and food production potential. Overlying these threats is the impact of the global economy on land use policies.
Projections made at the XVIII International Grassland Congress in 1997 suggested that food production could …

Community-Based Organizations And Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy: Giant's Role In Increasing Vaccine Confidence, Megan Cassady
Master's Projects and Capstones
Vaccines are vital in maintaining a healthy community. They assist in decreasing the spread of diseases; in fact, the World Health Organization estimates that globally vaccines prevent 2-3 million deaths a year and that 1.5 million deaths could be avoided if vaccine distribution and confidence improved. Vaccine hesitancy is defined as a delay or refusal in vaccines and the concept is growing among all populations due to a decrease in vaccine confidence and misinformation. In order to decrease vaccine hesitancy, the government and larger healthcare agencies must invest in local community-based programs. These organizations play an important role in educating …

β cells may participate and contribute to their own demise during Type 1 diabetes (T1D). Here we report a role of their expression of Tet2 in regulating immune killing. Tet2 is induced in murine and human β cells with inflammation but its expression is reduced in surviving β cells. Tet2-KO mice that receive WT bone marrow transplants develop insulitis but not diabetes and islet infiltrates do not eliminate β cells even though immune cells from the mice can transfer diabetes to NOD/scid recipients. Tet2-KO recipients are protected from transfer of disease by diabetogenic immune cells.Tet2-KO β cells show reduced expression …

Exploring Mirna Function And Host Response To Coxiella Burnetii Infection, Madhur Sachan
Dissertations and Theses
Alveolar macrophages attempt to control bacterial infection through a spectrum of defense processes, including induction of apoptosis, autophagy, inflammatory response, and nutrient sequestration. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small non-coding RNAs, are involved in a spectrum of physiological processes, including immune response to intracellular infections. However, whether microRNAs have any functions in host response to Coxiella burnetii infection is unknown. Coxiella burnetii is a highly infectious intracellular pathogen that causes Q fever, a zoonosis with a worldwide occurrence. In this work, I investigated the functions of miRNAs in host response to C. burnetii infection and found that miRNAs are an …

Databases containing macro-level data are an underutilized methodological tool for expanding theory in micro research (i.e., individual and team) to the macro (i.e., organizational and higher) level of analysis. We describe how macro archival databases support different theoretical approaches for upwardly expanding micro research and summarize unanswered research questions across micro domains requiring upward expansion. We describe 31 macro archival databases as a resource for testing research questions that upwardly expand theorizing in micro domains and how databases enable methodological best practices (i.e., data collection over time, multiple measures of a construct, multilevel statistical controls, missing data and outlier management) …
