Technological determinism has been driving conceptions of technology enhanced learning for the last two decades at least. The abrupt shift to the emergency delivery of online courses during COVID-19 has accelerated big tech’s coup d’état of higher education, perhaps irrevocably. Yet, commercial technologies are not necessarily aligned with dialogic conceptions of learning while a technological transmission model negates learners’ input and interactions. Mikhail Bakhtin viewed words as the multivocal bridge to social thought. His theory of the polysemy of language, that has subsequently been termed dialogism, has strong correlations with the semiotic philosophy of American pragmatist Charles Sanders Peirce. Peirce’s …

Tillage Systems In The Establishment Of Pastures In Argentinian Subhumid Area, H. Pagliaricci, C. Saroff, A. Ohanian, T. Pereyra
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effect of three tillage systems on the number of plants produced and forage production of a pasture the first year of establishment was assessed in this experiment. The components of the pasture were alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Shreb), orchard grass (Dactilys glomerata L), and prairie grass (Bromus unioloides). Treatments were three tillage systems: conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT), and direct sowing (DS). Sowing was performed with (NI) and without fertilizers (N0) in each treatment. A split-plot experimental design with two repetitions was used, with tillage being the main factor …

Pregnancies affected by obesity are at high risk for developing metabolic complications with oxidative stress and adipocyte dysfunction contributing to the underlying pathologies. Few studies have examined the role of dietary interventions, especially those involving antioxidants including polyphenolic flavonoids found in fruits and vegetables on these pathologies in high-risk pregnant women. We conducted an 18 gestation-week randomized controlled trial to examine the effects of a dietary intervention comprising of whole blueberries and soluble fiber vs. control (standard prenatal care) on biomarkers of oxidative stress/antioxidant status and adipocyte and hormonal functions in pregnant women with obesity (n = 34). Serum samples …

Patterns Of Torso Morphology In Extant Quadrupedal Amniotes And Their Paleontological Applications, Myles M.A. Walsh
Patterns Of Torso Morphology In Extant Quadrupedal Amniotes And Their Paleontological Applications, Myles M.A. Walsh
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between form and function is an overarching theme in the field of biology. Specifically, body size and shape are important factors when considering the biology of an organism. This study examined the torso morphology of a diverse set of 124 extant terrestrial and semi-aquatic amniote taxa using a novel approach to construct approximated torso shape groupings. My study shows the presence of 10 distinct torso shapes within the examined amniotes, and these torso shape groupings were used to evaluate hypotheses associated with diet and limb bone length as well as explore potential evolutionary patterns. Herbivores had a more …
Collective Awe: The Effects Of Shared Experience, Martha Szekely
Collective Awe: The Effects Of Shared Experience, Martha Szekely
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Awe, as a complex positive emotion that mixes wonder, veneration, and/or dread, has been shown to induce a small sense of self. In the current research, we focused on the question of whether sharing an awe experience has an impact on that experience. We conducted two studies in which we explored the effects of “collective awe” as it relates to awe intensity, awe-related emotions, self-diminishment, and wellbeing. In addition, based on previous research, we hypothesized that participants with higher awe intensity ratings and awe-related emotion scores would score higher on self-diminishment and wellbeing measures than participants with lower awe intensity …

Food systems in many countries are experiencing a shift from traditional foods toward processed foods high in sugar, fat and salt, but low in dietary fiber and micronutrients. There is an urgent need to better understand drivers of changing food behavior, particularly for lower-income countries. This study analyzes drivers of food choice among children and parents in rural Nepal. It uses qualitative data collected through key informant interviews and focus group discussions with school children, parents and teachers. The study reveals substantial changes in food behavior during the past decade with increased consumption of rice, meat, and highly processed snack …
Analyzing Nanoscale Thermal Transport Using Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction, James Grammich
Analyzing Nanoscale Thermal Transport Using Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction, James Grammich
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Classical models of thermal transport breakdown at lengthscales below a few microns in many materials, including the surfaces of bulk semiconductors. This presents difficulties in the analysis and design of small electronic devices, where unexpected thermal effects can occur such as hot spots that deteriorate performance and limit speed. Time-resolved x-ray diffraction has been proposed as one method to investigate this regime of nanoscale thermal transport, especially inside semiconductor materials where other techniques can not penetrate or yield quantitative results. Towards this goal, this thesis benchmarks a new, portable, and fast open-source x-ray dynamical diffraction code (TRXD) for strained crystals …
Phylogenomics And Population History Of Cichlid And Live-Bearing Fish Species In Lowland Neotropical Rivers, Konrad Taube
Phylogenomics And Population History Of Cichlid And Live-Bearing Fish Species In Lowland Neotropical Rivers, Konrad Taube
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Within Middle America, cichlids and poeciliids account for more than half of the fish biodiversity. This richness in fish fauna highlights the complexity of Middle American biogeography: no other continental area on earth contains within its range the unparalleled abundance of secondary freshwater fish species (fish that can tolerate both saltwater and freshwater). Research into the biogeography of widely distributed Middle American freshwater fish is essential to understanding this unique region.
Three species of freshwater fishes (Belonesox belizanus – Pike killifish, Vieja maculicauda – Black belt cichlid, and Gambusia nicaraguensis – Nicaraguan mosquitofish) are widely distributed across rivers on …

Reef-building corals thriving in extreme thermal environments may provide genetic variation that can assist the evolution of populations to rapid climate warming. However, the feasibility and scale of genetic improvements remain untested despite ongoing population declines from recurrent thermal stress events. Here, we show that corals from the hottest reefs in the world transfer sufficient heat tolerance to a naïve population sufficient to withstand end-of-century warming projections. Heat survival increased up to 84% when naïve mothers were selectively bred with fathers from the hottest reefs because of strong heritable genetic effects. We identified genomic loci associated with tolerance variation that …

Living under systemic political oppression by the non-legitimate power means living under the everyday risk of being beaten, detained, tortured, fired from a job, expelled from the educational facility, having your kids expropriated from family, or even murdered to death. Knowing these all, Belarusian people have been resisting the regime since the most recent presidential elections on August 9, 2020. This paper provides a brief description of the main hurdles experienced by Belarusian people from the authorities, the ways of helping them to survive through the most repressive times ever seen in this country, and why all the above turns …
Canines And Commons: An Institutional Analysis, Andy Xie
Canines And Commons: An Institutional Analysis, Andy Xie
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper applies Elinor Ostrom’s Institutional Analysis and Development Framework to explain how a local dog park – the Montrose – is able to overcome communal degradation in the absence of a centralized power. In the first half of this piece, I elucidate the rules, participants, and systems that characterize this specific social-ecological system. In the second half, through a combination of park-goer interviews and analyses of online reviews, I find that the existence of high degrees of social capital between participants, repeated interactions, entwined utilities, and the institutional diversity of a polycentric system serve to explain the effective maintenance, …

Decolonization: The Litmus Test Of The Human Rights Framework, Isiuwa Omoigui
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
This literature review examines the complicated relationship between anticolonial activism and the human rights framework that emerged in the wake of the Second World War. I contextualize the scholarly debate on the tension between conceptions of human rights as an individual entitlement and the collectivist nature of African anticolonial struggles. The universalism of the human rights framework endures the harsh light of critique, given its emergence from the twentieth-century European experience of genocide and great powers’ competing commitments to democracy and empire. The crimes against humanity committed in the name of colonial conquest and rule challenge the great powers’ moral …
Costuming Characters In Early Medieval Irish Literature, Lydia Lee
Costuming Characters In Early Medieval Irish Literature, Lydia Lee
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Clothing in early medieval Irish literature can often serve as a representation of a character’s wealth and status. However, this paper asserts that the storytellers of these texts costume characters in order to reflect more nuanced layers of their identity. By examining the ways in which clothing is desccribed in Irish tales from the Mythological Cycle and the Ulster Cycle, as well as the legal text “Cáin Íarraith,” this paper argues that storytellers use garments to indicate a character’s geographical roots and occupation, reinforce customs and strengthen social bonds, comment on gender roles of aristocratic women, and serve as a …
Spectacular Interiority In Post-Apartheid South African Literature, Jaehyun Kim
Spectacular Interiority In Post-Apartheid South African Literature, Jaehyun Kim
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Near the fall of apartheid, South Africa underwent a literary transformation. No longer bound by racialized dichotomies, South African authors rejected extreme narratives (called spectacular exteriority) in favor of nuanced, analytical, and personal ones. This paper argues that the extreme, spectacular representations remain an essential part of two works of post-apartheid literature, Thirteen Cents by K. Sello Duiker and The Folly by Ivan Vladislavić—however, with a twist. Instead of crafting extreme descriptions and events of society, the authors are more concerned with crafting extreme descriptions and thoughts of the characters’ minds. Within these novels, characters experience graphic, subjective, and hallucinatory …
Examining Variations In Community Benefit Generation Across Namibian Conservancies, Amanda Zhang
Examining Variations In Community Benefit Generation Across Namibian Conservancies, Amanda Zhang
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Centered around Namibia’s Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) program, this analysis explores varying levels of community benefit generation across 51 of Namibia’s conservancies by comparing benefits across four conservancy subsets and using multiple linear regressions (MLRs) to examine relationships between selected conservancy characteristics and benefit generation. The statistically significant models predict that the presence of one additional major species is linked to an additional $N 1.458 in meat value per capita, $N 0.543 in conservancy wage per employee, and 0.661 in community game guard employment. While there appears to be a positive correlation between the number of species and …
Social Movements In The Information Communication Technology Age: The Case Of Hong Kong, Justin Jin
Social Movements In The Information Communication Technology Age: The Case Of Hong Kong, Justin Jin
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper develops current understandings of social movements by incorporating research on state formation and counterinsurgency, expanding political process theory by introducing the concepts of legibility and capacity. It then considers the changes caused by widespread use of Internet communications technologies (ICTs). The paper conceptualizes state-movement contention as a competition for access to civil society and its resources. Movements and states attempt to maximize their access, otherwise known as capacity, and minimize that of their rival. The legibility of society to either side impacts their success. Success, or lack thereof, determines future capacity. Increased usage of ICTs and digital surveillance …
The Dark Side Of Variety: An Economic Model Of Choice Overload, Teeger Li Blasheck, Jawwad Noor
The Dark Side Of Variety: An Economic Model Of Choice Overload, Teeger Li Blasheck, Jawwad Noor
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Choice Overload is a phenomenon well studied in psychology. It goes against the classical ³more is better´ dogma and describes the behavior of an agent when presented with too many options, in which instance an agent may either experience a decrease in satisfaction or end up deferring the choice all together. The standard Utility Maximization model of economics, however, largely follows the classical dogma and is unable to accommodate the behaviors of Choice Overload. This paper seeks to offer two possible economic models for Choice Overload based on the two mechanisms put forward by the psychological literature: search cost and …

Altering Sensory Learning By Chronic Inactivation Of Vip Interneurons, Christopher Alba, Hannah Selwyn, Katie Ferguson, Jessica Cardin
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-expressing interneurons (VIP-INs) play a key role in the regulation of cortical circuits and are implicated in perceptual function and psychiatric disease. However, their role in perceptual augmentation and learning remains understudied. We performed chronic, localized ablation of VIP-INs in the primary visual cortex of adult mice using caspase-induced apoptosis to better understand how VIP-INs contribute to visual perception and the ability to learn a visual detection task. We find that chronic VIP-IN ablation does not affect naïve performance on a full-screen visual contrast detection task. However, mice with suppressed levels of VIP-INs achieved their final expert state …
