Does The Covid-19 Pandemic Change Consumers’ Food Consumption And Willingness-To-Pay? The Case Of China, Wei Yue, Na Liu, Qiujie Zheng, H Holly Wang
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Since COVID-19 was first detected in China in 2019, governments around the world have imposed strict measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, which substantially impacted people’s life. Consumers’ food consumption behavior has also changed accordingly with reduced grocery shopping frequency, replaced in-person grocery shopping with online shopping, and increased valuation on food. In this paper, we aim to investigate the change in Chinese consumers’ food consumption and their willingness to pay (WTP) for vegetables and meat, using a dataset with 1206 online samples collected between February and March 2020. Consumers’ WTP for vegetables and meat is estimated using …

Teachers As Instructional Designers: Unearthing The Essence Of The Primary School Curriculum For Delivery Within The Remote Learning Classroom, Angela Gonzalez, Michael Poole
Journal of Practitioner Research
Moving our elementary curriculum to emergency remote instruction presented numerous challenges to our elementary school, as teachers recognized that elementary-age children could not be expected to spend the amount of time on computer screens that they had spent in face-to-face classrooms. Working with our colleagues, we adopted a “less is more” approach, using inquiry processes to make systematic and informed choices as to which state standards would be covered. We acted as instructional designers to develop coherent learning units for remote instruction, using inquiry processes to study the effectiveness of our lessons and adjust instruction accordingly. This work could only …

SARS-CoV-2 attacked more than 120 million people and causing the death of more than two million worldwide. Because of the crucial role of ACE2 protein as an entry for SRS-COV2, we investigated the proteins sequence in seventy- three living species. Data analysis of protein sequences, ACE2 mRNA, expression analysis, and protein interaction for humans and other living species were obtained from databases. The phylogenetic tree was constructed using MEGA6. We found 95% or more similarity between the conserved protein domains between Homo sapiens and Felis catus, Pan troglodytes, Pan paniscus, and Equus caballus. These species could be expressed the protein …

Information Sciences Letters
This paper elucidates an ecological model of a three-space food chain consists of two competing species and a third species, which is supporting the first competing species in non-linear manner of Holling type-II functional response and ingests the second competitive species in linear style, within the limited resources. This model is constituted by a system of non-linear decoupled first order ordinary differential equations. By using perturbed method, we investigate the local stability nature of the system at each possible equilibrium point. Further, the numerical illustrations at suitable parametric values to the model are presented by observing the species survivalness in …

Alcohol’S Impact On The Gut And Liver, Keith Pohl, Prebashan Moodley, Ashwin D. Dhanda
Peninsula Medical School
Alcohol is inextricably linked with the digestive system. It is absorbed through the gut and metabolised by hepatocytes within the liver. Excessive alcohol use results in alterations to the gut microbiome and gut epithelial integrity. It contributes to important micronutrient deficiencies including short-chain fatty acids and trace elements that can influence immune function and lead to liver damage. In some people, long-term alcohol misuse results in liver disease progressing from fatty liver to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, and results in over half of all deaths from chronic liver disease, over half a million globally per year. In this review, we …

Many diseases, including cancer, can lead to neuropathic pain (NP). NP is one of the accompanying symptoms of suffering in many conditions and the life quality of NP patient is seriously affected. Due to complex causes, the effects of clinical treatments have been very unsatisfactory. Many experts have found that neuron-microglia interaction plays an essential role in NP occurrence and development. Therefore, the activation of microglia, related inflammatory mediators and molecular and cellular signaling pathways have become the focus of NP research. With the help of modern functional imaging technology, advanced pre-and clinical studies have been carried out and NP …

The roadway safety of the Rural, Isolated, Tribal, or Indigenous (RITI) communities has become an important social issue in the United States. Official data from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) shows that, in 2012, 54 percent of all fatalities occurred on rural roads while only 19 percent of the US population lived in rural communities. Under the serious circumstances, this research aims to help the RITI communities to improve their roadway safety through the development of a roadway safety management system. Generally, a roadway safety management system includes two critical components, the baseline data platform and safety assessment framework. In …

An estimated 70 million persons in the Western Hemisphere are living at risk for Chagas disease, a parasitic infection transmitted to humans by over 156 different competent triatomine insect vector species. Prior Pan American Health Organization insecticide campaigns throughout Latin America in the 1990s and 2000s demonstrated that domestic insecticide spraying had temporary effects, which resulted in the re-establishment of triatomine species within a few years. Serendipitously, our team found ectoparasitic mites parasitizing triatomines collected from the field in multiple locations in the southwestern United States, where human–triatomine interaction was high but human parasite infection remains low. Upon further investigation …

Why Proving A Work-Related, Psychological Injury Claim Stresses You Out, Melissa Lin Jones
Journal of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary
In recognition of the humanitarian purpose of the District of Columbia Workers’ Compensation Act of 1979, D.C. Code as amended, §32-1501 et seq. and the legislative policy favoring awards even in arguable cases, a claimant is entitled to a presumption of compensability (“Presumption”) when applying for workers’ compensation benefits. By establishing a causal connection between the injured worker’s disability and a work-related event, the Presumption enables a claimant to establish entitlement to benefits more easily; however, misapplication of the Presumption makes it more difficult for claimants to prove work-related psychological injuries because they must satisfy additional requirements (including a credibility …

Comparison Of Nitrate Contents For Reed Canarygrass And Orchardgrass In Large Amounts Of Compound Fertilization, A. Fushimi, Y. Tamura, K. Matoba
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) could be an ideal candidate for manure application. We compared its growth, crude protein (CP) and nitrate N (NO3-N) content to that of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) on different levels of nitrogen fertilization (3,10,15 and 20g N m-2, applied from May 15 to September 15 after each monthly cutting. The dry weight (DW) of reed canarygrass increased significantly with increasing amounts of N nitrogen on July, August and September. However, orchardgrass only showed a significant increase in yield on September. The concentration of CP of reed canarygrass was significantly …

Biological Interactions In Grassland Soils And Productivity, R. Cook, R. D. Bardgett, W. R. Eason, L. Skøt, K. J. Webb
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
This paper describes research on interactions between grassland plant species and soil microorganisms. Both parasitic and symbiotic microorganisms modify nutrient transfers between plants and soil. Experiments are described in which nematode infection of clover increased nitrogen transfer to companion ryegrass plants. Infection of clover enhanced activity of soil bacterial and fungal communities. Legume genotypes differing only in responses to symbionts (rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) and pathogens are being developed for studies of gene expression during establishing and functional symbioses. Such plants can be used in experiments as defined perturbations that will provide information on the interactions and functions of …

West Nile virus(WNV) is a globally distributed mosquito-borne virus of great public health concern. The number of WNV human cases and mosquito infection patterns vary in space and time. Many statistical models have been developed to understand and predict WNV geographic and temporal dynamics. However, these modeling efforts have been disjointed with little model comparison and inconsistent validation. In this paper, we describe a framework to unify and standardize WNV modeling efforts nationwide. WNV risk, detection, or warning models for this review were solicited from active research groups working in different regions of the United States. A total of 13 …

The Asian “tiger mosquito” Aedes albopictus is currently the most widely distributed disease-transmitting mosquito in the world. Its geographical expansion has also allowed the expansion of multiple arboviruses like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, to higher latitudes. Due to the enormous risk to global public health caused by mosquitoes species vectors of human disease, and the challenges in slowing their expansion, it is necessary to develop new and environmentally friendly vector control strategies. Among these, host-associated microbiome-based strategies have emerged as promising options. In this study, we performed an RNA-seq analysis on dissected abdomens of Ae. albopictus females from Manhattan, KS, …

Listening For The Voice Of Nature In The City, Ken Boyle
Conference Papers
Nature, as protected habitats/species, is represented and has a voice in the planning system. But most nature in urban environments is ordinary or mundane and lacks a voice in the planning and development process. Cities, the places where more people now live, teem with nature’s wildness. Our relationship with the non-human, particularly during COVID, was vital. This paper examines the need for representation of the voice of ordinary nature in the future development of cities. Using case studies in Dublin city, the hierarchy of ordinary nature, how it speaks to us and its role the city, is considered. By learning …

Therapeutic Potential Of Annexins In Sepsis And Covid-19, Louise Mui, Claudio M. Martin, Brent J. Tschirhart, Qingping Feng
Paediatrics Publications
Sepsis is a continuing problem in modern healthcare, with a relatively high prevalence, and a significant mortality rate worldwide. Currently, no specific anti-sepsis treatment exists despite decades of research on developing potential therapies. Annexins are molecules that show efficacy in preclinical models of sepsis but have not been investigated as a potential therapy in patients with sepsis. Human annexins play important roles in cell membrane dynamics, as well as mediation of systemic effects. Most notably, annexins are highly involved in anti-inflammatory processes, adaptive immunity, modulation of coagulation and fibrinolysis, as well as protective shielding of cells from phagocytosis. These discoveries …
