Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective: Extracellular matrix proteins play important roles in embryonic development and antibodies that specifically detect these proteins are essential to understanding their function. The zebrafish embryo is a popular model for vertebrate development but suffers from a dearth of authenticated antibody reagents for research. Here, we describe a novel antibody designed to detect the minor fibrillar collagen chain Col11a1a in zebrafish (AB strain).

Results: The Col11a1a antibody was raised in rabbit against a peptide comprising a unique sequence within the zebrafish Col11a1a gene product. The antibody was affinity-purified and characterized by ELISA. The antibody is effective for immunoblot and immunohistochemistry …

The Challenge Of Water Entries, Andrea S. Andrews, Shayne D. Baker Sep 2021

The Challenge Of Water Entries, Andrea S. Andrews, Shayne D. Baker

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The authors presented a poster at the International Life Saving Foundation's World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2019 in Durban, South Africa titled, "Finding an Aquatic Voice," that was the basis for this article. The conference theme was "Growing Global Drowning Prevention Capacity,” and the aim of our poster’s contribution to the conference was to explore internal reasons for the variable capacity of water-wary persons to engage in water experiences which often manifest as a “water entry and exit conundrum." The paper provides critical decision points associated with these issues to encourage further reflective practice by aquatic professionals. The …

The Experience Of An Intermodal Arts Exploration, Maryellen Mahar Sep 2021

The Experience Of An Intermodal Arts Exploration, Maryellen Mahar

Abstract

In this study, a sequence of visual, sound, and movement expression was utilized to explore how engagement in the intermodal combination influenced participants’ articulation of tacit, felt sense awareness associated with their creative process. The research questions were, “What are artists’ experiences of engagement in an intermodal expressive arts process?” and “How does engagement in non-verbal intermodal arts (visual art, sound/music, and dance/movement) influence participants’ articulation of tacit, felt sense awareness associated with their creative process?” This qualitative and arts-based study included participants (N = 5) over the age of 18 who were purposefully sampled based upon their …

Efficacy Of Predator Exclusion Methods And Id Of Nest Predators For Interior Least Terns And Piping Plovers At Off-Channel Nesting Sites Along The Central Platte River, Nebraska, Usa, Kaley Keldsen Sep 2021

Efficacy Of Predator Exclusion Methods And Id Of Nest Predators For Interior Least Terns And Piping Plovers At Off-Channel Nesting Sites Along The Central Platte River, Nebraska, Usa, Kaley Keldsen

Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Nest predation is a major cause of failed shorebird reproduction. Management to increase reproductive success and survival of nesting interior least terns (Sterna antillarum athalassos; hereafter, least tern), and piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) that nest along the Central Platte River focuses on constructing and managing off-channel nesting habitats that are protected and monitored for least tern and piping plover productivity (i.e., nesting success and fledging success). However, nest and brood fates of unknown outcome, failed to unknown causes, or failed due to predation have been high for both species. These uncertainties lead to the investigation of avian and mammalian predator …

Understanding Conflicts In Natural Resources Management: Using Systems Thinking And Systems Dynamics To Model The Relationship Between The American Prairie Reserve And Neighboring Communities, Amanda Hartman Medaries Sep 2021

Understanding Conflicts In Natural Resources Management: Using Systems Thinking And Systems Dynamics To Model The Relationship Between The American Prairie Reserve And Neighboring Communities, Amanda Hartman Medaries

Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Conservation conflict, whether human-wildlife or human-human, and specifically those that include the public as stakeholders, is seen as one of the most influential reasons reintroduction and/or conservation of species or landscapes is difficult to accomplish. This is due to the numerous mental models involved within conflict. In order to help mitigate or mediate said conflict, understanding these mental models and the roles they play within the system is crucial. Unfortunately, adaptive management, which is reactionary, additive, and most often used within these systems, is unable to do so and solutions to the conflict remain elusive. The aim of this study …

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Migration from the countryside towards the city has become a prominent feature in Iraqi cities due to the deterioration of the rural reality, as well as forced migration in some areas. And that this migration cast a delusion on the cities with the emergence of many problems such as customs, traditions and rural behavior, the most important of which is the emergence of random housing and animal husbandry.... Hilla is one of the Iraqi cities that suffered from this phenomenon. The phenomenon of urban sidewalks for reasons related to the deterioration of the rural situation throughout the countryside of the …

Zero Tolerance Policies Are Anti-Black: Protecting Racially Profiled Students From Educational Injustice, Jonathan Lightfoot Sep 2021

Zero Tolerance Policies Are Anti-Black: Protecting Racially Profiled Students From Educational Injustice, Jonathan Lightfoot

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

When students are tracked from their schools into the juvenile and adult criminal justice system, primarily because of zero-tolerance policies, they fall victim to a practice that is now widely known as the school-to-prison pipeline. President Obama urged educators to abandon severe disciplinary policies that criminalize students for offenses that could be handled without law enforcement (Du, 2015). A review of the literature indicates a disproportionate number of Black students are at a greater risk of being adversely impacted by such policies thus increasing their chances of having a negative educational experience. Research shows that Black students receive higher rates …

Racialization Of Knowledge: How The Marginalization Of Black History And Knowledges Fosters A Lack Of Racial Literacy Among Teacher Candidates, Patrick Radebe, Bathseba Opini

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This paper examines the practice within universities of restricting the number of courses focussing on Black/African-Canadian history and ‘Blackness’, in the context of teacher education programs, and the implications for the unawareness of racial literacy among teacher candidates. The lack of such courses at select universities in Western Canada is discussed, as are the consequences for teacher candidates. Teacher education programs can address the systemic gaps in Black history courses and Black knowledge systems and better serve the interests of students by, offering courses that centers Black worldviews and hire Black scholars to foster a more equitable learning environment.

Identification Of Micrornas And Gene Regulatory Networks In Cleft Lip Common In Humans And Mice, Hiroki Yoshioka, Aimin Li, Akiko Suzuki, Sai Shankar Ramakrishnan, Zhongming Zhao, Junichi Iwata

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The etiology of cleft lip with/without cleft palate (CL/P), one of the most frequent craniofacial birth defects worldwide, is complicated by contributions of both genetic and environmental factors. Understanding the etiology of these conditions is essential for developing preventive strategies. This study thus aims to identify regulatory networks of microRNAs (miRNAs), transcriptional factors (TFs) and non-TF genes associated with cleft lip (CL) that are conserved in humans and mice. Notably, we found that miR-27b, miR-133b, miR-205, miR-376b and miR-376c were involved in the regulation of CL-associated gene expression in both humans and mice. Among the candidate miRNAs, the overexpression of …

Friends, Brothers, And Murderers: Georgia’S Propaganda War During The American Revolution, Daniel Zane Moore Sep 2021

Friends, Brothers, And Murderers: Georgia’S Propaganda War During The American Revolution, Daniel Zane Moore

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Native Americans featured prominently in the letters and military communications of revolutionary Georgians. Georgians called them friends and brothers during treaty talks, “savages” in appeals to the Continental Congress, and honorable and virtuous people when discussing the Natives’ philosophical nature. Each name represented a specific purpose as the Georgians sought to invoke Native Americans in propaganda for the Whigs’ own advantage during the Revolutionary War. The double-talk that spilled forth created a confusing world in which Native Americans played both friend of liberty and “butcher” of innocent women and children in the minds of Georgia Whigs. Throughout the turbulent war …

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The present paper aims at shedding a spotlight on a significant issue in the western life, namely eulogies which are important practices in the western community employed in a funeral of a deceased / living person. However, writing eulogy requires a specific stylishness inscription in order to serve specific functions and purposes so as to mitigate or soften the gloomy effects of the event on his/her family or friends. Metonymy, mitigation of apology and hypophora are regarded as linguistic devices to convey the profound meaning of the eulogist in an elegant way. Exploring these devices , identifying their role in …

An International Agreement On Pandemic Prevention And Preparedness, Lawrence O. Gostin, Sam F. Halabi, Kevin A. Klock

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

During late 2021, national delegations are, or have, met at the United Nations General Assembly, the G20, and, most importantly, the Special Session of the World Health Assembly in November to determine whether the world needs a new international agreement to address pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. The current international agreement, the International Health Regulations (2005), failed to work effectively – SARS-CoV-2 was not detected sufficiently early, relevant information was not shared efficiently, and the global response has not been coordinated. Even the most basic investigations were inadequate such as to discover the origins of SARS-CoV-2. Current proposals focus on …

Pathogenesis Of Chronic Subdural Hematoma: A Cohort Evidencing De Novo And Transformational Origins, Ellie Edlmann, Peter C. Whitfield, Angelos Kolias, Peter J. Hutchinson Sep 2021

Pathogenesis Of Chronic Subdural Hematoma: A Cohort Evidencing De Novo And Transformational Origins, Ellie Edlmann, Peter C. Whitfield, Angelos Kolias, Peter J. Hutchinson

Peninsula Medical School

Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common neurosurgical pathology, yet conflicting opinions exist concerning the pathophysiological processes involved. Many consider CSDH a product of an aged acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) secondary to trauma. Serial imaging, however, has demonstrated CSDH formation in patients without any initial ASDH. To understand the relevance of acute hemorrhage in a cohort of patients with CSDH, transformation from an ASDH were categorized as CSDH-acute transformed (CSDH-AT) and those without any acute hemorrhage at the outset as CSDH-de-novo (CSDH-DN). A cohort of 41 eligible patients with CSDH were included, with baseline imaging after trauma (or spontaneous ASDH) …

Understanding Shoot And Root Development, C. Matthew, E. N. Van Loo, E. R. Thom, L. A. Dawson, D. A. Care

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Shoot and root development of the grass tiller is presented as a series of events on the tiller axis. Leaf, tiller bud, true stem, and root development are successive events in the life cycle of a single phytomer and the tiller is a co-ordinated series of phytomers, successive phytomers being progressively more advanced than the previous phytomer. In reviewing the individual growth processes of leaf, tiller, true stem, and root formation, fundamental determinants of light and nutrient capture are examined and examples presented to illustrate the link between component processes, plant morphogenesis, and plant performance. An example of the application …

Ecophysiology Of Grasslands: Dynamic Aspects Of Forage Plant Populations In Grazed Swards, G. Lemaire Sep 2021

Ecophysiology Of Grasslands: Dynamic Aspects Of Forage Plant Populations In Grazed Swards, G. Lemaire

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The aim of this paper is to review knowledge of the ecophysiological mechanisms influencing the dynamics of plant populations in grazed swards. Such an objective requires some definitions. Firstly, it is necessary to define “ecophysiology” as the study of the interactions between biological individuals (plants) with their own environment: how individuals perceive and react to any constraint and change of their environment, and how the functioning of plants as a population can modify their own environment. Such a definition implies a dynamic approach to pant population functioning as resulting from constant plant-plant interactions mediated by micro-environment modifications. In a grazed …

A Modular Open-Technology Device To Measure And Adjust Concentration Of Sperm Samples For Cryopreservation, Nikolas C. Zuchowicz Sep 2021

A Modular Open-Technology Device To Measure And Adjust Concentration Of Sperm Samples For Cryopreservation, Nikolas C. Zuchowicz

LSU Master's Theses

Repositories for aquatic germplasm can safeguard the genetic diversity of species of interest to aquaculture, research, and conservation. The development of such repositories is impeded by a lack of standardization both within laboratories and across the research community. Protocols for cryopreservation are often developed ad hoc and without close attention to variables, such as sperm concentration, that strongly affect the success and consistency of cryopreservation. The wide dissemination and use of specialized tools and devices can improve processing reliability, provide data logging, produce custom hardware to address unique problems, and save costs, time, and labor. The goal of the present …

Can The Visits Of Dogs (Canis Lupus Familiaris) Influence The Mental Health (Anxiety And Depression) Of Male Aging Patients Institutionalized With Dementia In Health Care Units? A Pilot Study Of Madeira Island, Portugal, S. Vasconcelos, J. Azevedo, C. Casanova, H. Jardim, D. Neto, S. Jardim, C. Viegas

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Despite the fact that in the last decades, several mental health studies have shown that companion animals contribute to psychological and social well- being in humans (e.g., positive impacts have been observed in the elderly medicated for chronic diseases such as anxiety, dementia, and depression), bonds between humans and other animals continue to be under-estimated. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of an animal’s visits (twice a week, N = 30) in depression and anxiety levels of an institutionalized male population diagnosed with dementia. While some of these patients are being partially medicated with antidepressants and/or …

Bite Depth Penetration Patterns Of Dairy Cows Foraging On Complex Swards, W. M. Griffiths, J. Hodgson, G. C. Arnold Sep 2021

Bite Depth Penetration Patterns Of Dairy Cows Foraging On Complex Swards, W. M. Griffiths, J. Hodgson, G. C. Arnold

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Sward height was the dominant cue used by dairy cattle to determine the depth of penetration on young vegetative swards. On more complex swards, bite depth penetration was controlled by variations in the depth of regrowth. Evidence showed that cattle grazed to the pseudostem:lamina interface, but sward height exerted a stronger effect on bite depth than pseudostem height. Modelling efforts to predict how the herbivore places bites in space in the vertical dimension across sward states are currently being restricted by the absence of detailed canopy structure descriptions. We argue that the contrast between strata is an important determinant of …

The Effect Of Progressive Grazing Of A Pasture On The Spatial Distribution Of Herbage Mass And Utilization By Cattle, Masahiko Hirata, S. Ogura Sep 2021

The Effect Of Progressive Grazing Of A Pasture On The Spatial Distribution Of Herbage Mass And Utilization By Cattle, Masahiko Hirata, S. Ogura

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

To develop an understanding of the spatially heterogeneous grazing of a pasture by large herbivores under progressive grazing, the herbage mass, herbage consumption and ingestive behavior by cattle were monitored daily at ninety-one 50 × 50 cm permanent locations in a bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge) pasture during a 6-day grazing period. With the progress of grazing, the mean pre-grazing herbage mass over the locations decreased. Responding to this, the mean number of visits and the mean rate of biting increased, and the mean residence time and the mean rate of defoliation decreased. The pre-grazing herbage mass became more heterogeneous, …

Nitrogen Response Efficiencies From Grazed Dairy Pastures Under Dry Conditions, Frank R. Mckenzie, Joseph L. Jacobs

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Experiments were conducted within a long-term nitrogen (N) fertiliser experiment under grazing. The objective was to examine N response efficiencies (kg dry matter (DM)/kg N) and herbage crude protein (CP) content to fertiliser N applied under dry soil conditions (gravimetric soil moisture content of 17% at 10cm; soil field capacity = 38% and wilting point = 11%) during autumn (April 1999) and late spring (November 1999) in southeastern Australia. Visually, N treated plots were greener in colour than control (no N) plots. No differences were recorded in primary or residual DM yields, N response efficiencies, and pasture growth rates between …
