Visions of Research in Music Education
The author writes an autobiographical reflection after attending a hand drumming concert. The rhythmic grooves liberate her mind and body while she reflects on a major transition in her life. Writing helps her reflect on how the concert becomes a pedagogical context forthe emotional and intellectual chaos. In the end, autobiography moves her to gain a deeper understanding about how the pedagogical aspect from the concert enables change.
Character Development And Social Reconstruction In Music Education At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Phillip M. Hash
Character Development And Social Reconstruction In Music Education At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Phillip M. Hash
Visions of Research in Music Education
Educators of the nineteenth century believed that music influenced the will, and thus the character and conduct of human beings. Music instruction during this time was, therefore, used as a tool for shaping the behavior and ideals of young Americans through songs communicating moral and patriotic messages. In the following years, during the Progressive Era (circa 1890s1940s), educators came to value music not for the power of its internal qualities, but rather for the benefits that resulted from engaging in real life musical practices. Consequently, elementary and secondary music curricula expanded to include a greater variety of courses and performing …
Mystery, Fire, And Intrigue Representation And Commodification Of Race In Band Literature, Joseph Abramo
Mystery, Fire, And Intrigue Representation And Commodification Of Race In Band Literature, Joseph Abramo
Visions of Research in Music Education
This article is a critical examination of ostensibly multicultural music for concert bands. Using Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence, I argue that “multicultural” band music, while celebrating diversity and inclusion, actually do the opposite—they are instead, created and used as tools that reproduce stereotypes and racial tropes. This system— where the symbolically violent act of racial tropes are misrecognized as such and celebrated as lessons in diversity—helps reify and perpetuate racial inequalities in society.
Critical Impacts For Music Education, Carol Frierson-Campbell
Critical Impacts For Music Education, Carol Frierson-Campbell
Visions of Research in Music Education
What do music teachers believe are the positive impacts of music education on students and schools? What are the expert skills and knowledge needed to create those impacts? What must students learn in music classes to attain these impacts? Few studies investigate the impact of music education from the point of view of the music teacher. This paper seeks to present preliminary information from a pilot study of the Critical Impacts of Music Questionnaire. Results indicate agreement with many statements of impact from the research literature, but also suggest interesting differences between general, choral, and instrumental music teachers regarding the …

Marshall Journal of Medicine
Abstract
Alpha-gal allergy, or mammalian meat allergy, is described as the development of IgE antibodies to the oligosaccharide galactose-a-1,3-galactose following a bite from the tick species Amblyomma americanum (Lone Star tick) or Dermacentor variabillis (Wood tick). Dermatologic or gastrointestinal symptoms are usually delayed by four to six hours after exposure, making the diagnosis difficult. Due to the use of mammalian proteins in many common medications, surgical equipment and prosthesis, unexpected reactions can occur. In the United States, this pathology is predominately seen in the southeast, but has been associated with other tick species on every continent except Antarctica. As the …

Efficacy Of Curcumin Supplementation In Asthma: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Tabitha M. Grow, Adam Sadowski
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Objective: Over 23 million people are affected by asthma in the United States and 262 million individuals globally. Asthma, if poorly controlled, is associated with significant morbidity as well as increased risk for mortality. Several complex inflammatory pathways and processes are involved leading to an increase in immune cell activation. Curcumin, the active constituent found in turmeric, has been studied in numerous in-vivo and in-vitro studies to generate anti-inflammatory effects in pulmonary diseases. More recently, an increase in clinical data has become available, and since the most recent review assessing the role of curcumin in pulmonary disorders, additional clinical …

Interdependencies in social groups of animals are a combination of multiple pairwise interactions. Heterospecific groups are often characterized by important species that contribute more to group initiation, maintenance or function than other species. However, in large heterospecific groups, many pairwise interactions are not realised, while others may not be biologically significant, confounding inferences about species importance. Hence, in this study, we examine context dependent changes in species importance and assortment in mixed-species bird flocks from a tropical field site in Southern India using social network analysis. Specifically, we ask how the structural importance of a species and the clustering patterns …

Towards A Normative Philosophical Foundation For Management: Contributions From The Catholic Faith Tradition, Christina Kheng
Towards A Normative Philosophical Foundation For Management: Contributions From The Catholic Faith Tradition, Christina Kheng
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
In recent years, there have been increasing efforts to improve management in the Catholic Church. Whilst positive outcomes have been observed, a key challenge is that the accompanying pastoral education and resource materials sometimes conflict with the Church’s theological tradition particularly regarding human work, ethics, and the view of reality. This article notes that a wider debate exists over the principles, effectiveness, and even legitimacy of management per se. It argues that the road to resolution has to begin at the level of philosophical foundations, and that this can be normative for management in both Church and society. An outline …

New Research Suggests Cat And Dog ‘Moms’ And ‘Dads’ Really Are Parenting Their Pets: Here’S The Evolutionary Explanation Why, Shelly Volsche
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Have you noticed more cats riding in strollers lately? Or bumper stickers that read, “I love my granddogs”? You’re not imagining it. More people are investing serious time, money and attention in their pets.
It looks an awful lot like parenting, but of pets, not people.
Can this kind of caregiving toward animals really be considered parenting? Or is something else going on here?

The Assessment Of Physical Risk Taking: Preliminary Construct Validation Of A New Behavioral Measure, Edward A. Smith, Stephen D. Benning
The Assessment Of Physical Risk Taking: Preliminary Construct Validation Of A New Behavioral Measure, Edward A. Smith, Stephen D. Benning
Psychology Faculty Research
Risk taking is a complex heterogeneous construct that has proven difficult to assess, especially when using behavioral tasks. We present an exploratory investigation of new measure–the Assessment of Physical Risk Taking (APRT). APRT produces a variety of different outcome scores and is designed as a comprehensive assessment of the probability of success and failure, and magnitude of reward and punishment of different types of simulated physically risky behaviors. Effects observed on the simulated behaviors are hypothesized to reflect similar effects on real world physical risks. Participants (N = 224) completed APRT in a laboratory setting, half of whom had a …

In plants, the cell wall makes cell migration impossible so plants must carefully control the orientation of cell division to ensure proper tissue development. Before prophase, the division plane is marked by formation of the preprophase band (PPB) which disassembles at the onset of prometaphase. During cytokinesis, the cell plate localizes to the division plane and attaches to the cell wall where the PPB was located. The proteins Tonneau 1 (TON1), Tonneau 2 (TON2), and the Tonneau 1 Recruiting Motif (TRM) family may be involved in the regulation of cell division orientation and PPB formation as plants with mutations in …

Quercetin Loaded Nanoparticles For The Treatment Of Dry Eye Disease, Bassma Sami Nashaat Hamed Eltanameli
Quercetin Loaded Nanoparticles For The Treatment Of Dry Eye Disease, Bassma Sami Nashaat Hamed Eltanameli
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dry eye disease (DED) is a common condition that affects the eye's anterior surface due to tear deficiency or excessive evaporation. The lack of tears leads to dryness and initiation of an inflammatory response which can irritate the eye and interfere with daily activities. Current treatment depends mainly on artificial tears eye drops which offer temporary relief and require repetitive administration due to frequent blinking. Prescription medications are also available but need around three months to relieve dry eye symptoms. Quercetin is a flavonoid that has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. However, it suffers from low water solubility and low …
