Effect Of Maceration On In Sacco Degradability And Energy Content Of Low-Moisture Round Bale Alfalfa Silage, K. Nonaka, S. Kume, T. Ohshita

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of maceration on in sacco degradability and energy content of low-moisture alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) silage. The results of two treatments were compared: 1) maceration, in which the alfalfa was processed through a large- scale forage mat maker prior to wilting to approximately 50% DM content (FM treatment), and 2) conventional conditioning, in which the alfalfa was tedded and wilted to the same DM content as that in the FM treatment (CC treatment). Silage bales were chopped in 20-mm pieces for each experiment. In sacco degradabilities of DM, CP …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

This experiment is one of a series designed to investigate the efficiency of nitrogen (N) use in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows grazing perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) which has been bred to express high water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentrations. Animals grazed either a High Sugar (HS) grass or a Control (C) variety chosen on the basis of heading date compatibility. Dry matter (DM) intakes were estimated using herbage mass. Milk yields, milk constituent concentrations and plasma concentrations of b-hydroxybutyrate, glucose, total protein, albumin and urea were also measured. Forage DM intakes were similar for the two grasses. However, because of …

Faculty Research 2021

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, affecting 70 million people worldwide. Owing to the similarity in anatomy and physiology between human and mouse eyes and the ability to genetically manipulate mice, mouse models are an invaluable resource for studying mechanisms underlying disease phenotypes and for developing therapeutic strategies. Here, we report the discovery of a new mouse model of early-onset glaucoma that bears a transversion substitution c. G344T, which results in a missense mutation, p. R115L in PITX2. The mutation causes an elevation in intraocular pressure (IOP) and progressive death of retinal ganglion cells (RGC). These ocular phenotypes recapitulate …

Two New Species Of Hermeuptychia From North America And Three Neotype Designations (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae), Qian Cong, Eduardo P. Barbosa, Mario A. Marín, André V. L. Freitas, Gerardo Lamas, Nick V. Grishin

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Abstract

Two new species of Hermeuptychia Forster, 1964 are described. Hermeuptychia sinuosa Grishin, sp. n. (type locality Guatemala: El Progreso, Morazán) is an isolated member of the genus that does not readily fit into known species groups, as suggested by its distinct male and female genitalia and COI DNA barcode sequences. It is distinguished from its congeners by prominently wavy submarginal lines, rounder wings and distinctive genitalia, and can typically be identified by a white dot, instead of an eyespot, near the ventral hindwing apex. Hermeuptychia occidentalis Grishin, sp. n. (type locality Mexico: Guerrero, Acapulco) belongs to the Hermeuptychia sosybius …

Laboratory Diagnostic Testing For Covid-19, Nuntra Suwantarat, Sidayu Suriya

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Laboratory tests play an important role for Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) diagnosis. The diagnostic key point is an appropriate testing during the course of disease. In the early course of COVID-19 infection, nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) especially real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of the respiratory specimen is the gold standard test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection due to the highest sensitivity and specificity during the first 2 weeks after the exposure. A rapid antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 has less complexity of the testing procedure and the faster TAT. However, a rapid antigen test …

SARS-CoV-2 is a cause of COVID-19 a contagious respiratory disease, in which there are many signs and symptoms such as fever, dry cough, shortness of breath, muscle ache, and pneumonia. Meanwhile, antiviral drug mechanisms which are being used to treat SARS-CoV-2 with Western drugs can be divided into three groups as follows: increasing acidic conditions by endosomal formation; viral replication; and affinity interaction with ACE-2 receptor via S-protein. Therefore, hydroxychloroquine/chloroquine, lopinavir, remdesivir, favipiravir, and molnupiravir which have been utilized to treat HIV and influenza via inhibiting viral replication and alkalinization could also modulate COVID-19 symptoms. However, antiviral drugs also have …

Current And Repurposing Medication For Sars-Cov-2 Infection, Kittiya Jantarathaneewat, Korakoch Kangwantas, Nattapong Tidwong

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

In the crisis of COVID-19 pandemic, there is no specific agent to treat SARS-CoV-2 infection. Repurposing medication can be an alternative agent. Remdesivir is the first antiviral drug that has been approved for COVID-19 treatment whereas lopinavir/ritonavir and hydroxychloroquine, which was early used in SARS-CoV-2 widespread, are against by well-known guidelines due to lack of efficacy and potential toxicity. Corticosteroids are an essential supportive care in COVID-19 patient with severe disease to reduce lung inflammation. Favipiravir may have a potential benefit for COVID-19 patient, but the data is still uncertain. Ivermectin, an antihelmintic agent, may be used against SARS-CoV-2 but …

Heat stress affects oocyte developmental competence and is a major cause of reduced fertility in heat stressed cattle. Negative effects of heat stress on the oocyte have been observed at morphological, biochemical and developmental levels. However, the mechanisms by which heat stress affects the oocyte at the transcriptional and epigenetic levels remain to be further elucidated. Here we aimed to investigate the effect of heat stress on oocyte quality, transcriptomic profiles and DNA methylation of oocytes collected through the transition from spring to summer under Louisiana conditions. Summer season resulted in a lower number of high quality oocytes obtained compared …

Covid-19 Treatment, Suttichai Visuttichaikit

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

The ongoing outbreak of COVID-19 has posed a great threat to public health. The various degree and dynamic of illness severity, together with the fact that only few drugs have been proven as an effective therapy has created critical challenges in disease management. Patients in acute viral phase usually present with upper respiratory tract and/or gastrointestinal illness, fever, and myalgia. Antiviral therapy might provide the greatest benefit in reducing disease progression in such patients with older age or significant comorbidities while immunomodulators are less likely to provide advantages. Patients in immune dysregulation phase usually present with pneumonia of different severity. …

Covid-19 And Pulmonary Involvement, Narongkorn Saiphoklang, Nuttapol Rittayamai

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

The COVID-19 pandemic results in the largest global health crisis. Most patients are asymptomatic. Pneumonia usually develops in about one week after infection, with approximately 5% of patients needing ICU admission due to hypoxemia or acute respiratory failure. The common symptoms of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia are fever, cough, and sputum production. Typical radiographic features of pneumonia are bilateral lower lobe lesions with ground-glass opacities or consolidations. N95 respirator in combination with personal protective equipment are necessary to prevent COVID-19 from spreading among healthcare workers during aerosol-generating procedures. Hemodynamic and ventilation management of critically ill patients with COVID-19 should follow …

SARS-CoV-2 virus, the etiologic agent of COVID-19, has affected almost every aspect of human life, precipitating stress-related pathology in vulnerable individuals. As the prevalence rate of posttraumatic stress disorder in pandemic survivors exceeds that of the general and special populations, the virus may predispose to this disorder by directly interfering with the stress-processing pathways. The SARS-CoV-2 interactome has identified several antigens that may disrupt the blood-brain-barrier by inducing premature senescence in many cell types, including the cerebral endothelial cells. This enables the stress molecules, including angiotensin II, endothelin-1 and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, to aberrantly activate the amygdala, hippocampus, and …

A Functional Characterization Of The Omega (Ω) Subunit Of Rna Polymerase In Staphylococcus Aureus, Shrushti B. Patil Oct 2021

A Functional Characterization Of The Omega (Ω) Subunit Of Rna Polymerase In Staphylococcus Aureus, Shrushti B. Patil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In bacteria, RNA polymerase (RNAP) is a well-characterized and highly conserved multi-subunit enzyme complex responsible for transcription of DNA into RNA. The ω subunit (rpoZ/RpoZ), one of the smaller accessory subunits of RNAP, is often overlooked and under-studied, however, particularly in Gram-positive species. We have previously shown that deleting ω impacts the integrity of RNA polymerase in S. aureus, especially the β' subunit, and alters preference of the core enzyme for sigma factors, skewing heavily towards σB instead of the housekeeping σ factor. Consequently, this causes deregulation of myriad transcriptional processes, strongly rewiring gene expression circuits, and ultimately impairing the …

Investigation Of An Alternative Protocol For The Production Of Sars-Cov-2 Antigenic Proteins, Nichole Ninaltowski Oct 2021

Investigation Of An Alternative Protocol For The Production Of Sars-Cov-2 Antigenic Proteins, Nichole Ninaltowski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the COVID-19 pandemic showing no signs of slowing down, large-scale antigenic protein production is still needed for surveillance using serologic assays. From screening to vaccines to biotherapeutics, being able to produce the proteins for these assays is essential; however, the current gold standard method for producing SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins is prohibitively expensive for most research groups.

Alternative methods of transfecting mammalian cells to produce recombinant proteins that are relatively inexpensive have been used for years. Unlike the expensive, commercially available lipid-based methods, other established methods such as polyethyleneimine (PEI), are considerably easier, and cheaper to meet the needs of …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Although the management of livestock numbers within the bounds of carrying capacity of African rangelands is a way to manage risks, both scientists and practitioners, caution against a momentary and local use of carrying capacity as a management indicator. Carrying capacity should be seen in wider spatial and temporal/seasonal context as well as in a social and economic context. Given the large numbers of conservancies across Kenya, and its Maasai Mara region in particular, with many more landowner members, it is difficult for conservancies’ managers to contextualize phenomena such as carrying capacity and market price over space and time.

Silvopastoral Strategy And Sustainable Management Of Forests In Morocco, Mustapha Naggar, Said Lahssini, Said Moukrim, Anass Legdou Oct 2021

Silvopastoral Strategy And Sustainable Management Of Forests In Morocco, Mustapha Naggar, Said Lahssini, Said Moukrim, Anass Legdou

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In Morocco, forests act as a grazing reserve all year long and in a normal year produce 1.5 billion feed units, i.e. 17 % of the national forage assessment. The pastoral question is one of the factors involved in the desertification of forested areas against a bioclimatic background where more than 93% of the national territory is arid. In 2016, the Water and Forestry Department in cooperation with its partners, devised a nation-wide sylvo-pastoral strategy. The approach adopted consists in sustainably managing sylvo-pastoral resources over the long term based on good governance of all goods and services offered by forested …

An Examination Of A Pre-Service Music Teacher’S Reflection Across Consecutive Teaching Placements, Christopher M. Baumgartner

Visions of Research in Music Education

Teachers reflect on their effectiveness in the classroom in both formal and informal manners. The purpose of this case study was to examine the reflective processes of one pre-service music teacher across two consecutive teaching placements. The pre-service teacher served eight weeks in an elementary music setting, followed by eight weeks in a comprehensive instrumental music program. Through written, guided reflections, classroom observations, and interviews, six themes emerged as areas of continual focus for the novice teacher: (a) preparation and lesson/rehearsal planning, (b) student achievement, (c) experience as an important factor in student teaching success, (d) classroom management, (e) extra-musical …

Permission To Play: Obstacles And Open Spaces In Music-Making, Chelsea C. Green Oct 2021

Permission To Play: Obstacles And Open Spaces In Music-Making, Chelsea C. Green

Visions of Research in Music Education

When the word play is used to describe music-making, the implication is that play is a sophisticated phenomenon involving an interaction of so many elements that it is both engrossing and beyond calculation. This definition of play hails from the field of philosophy and is the focus of this article. It is chiefly inspired by Hans George Gadamer’s magnum opus Truth and Method, in which he argues that art is able to communicate shared truths across both time and place via the phenomenon of play. Section I: Play is an illumination of Gadamer’s concept of play as it relates specifically …

The Incorporation Of Principles Of The Reggio Emilia Approach In A North American Pre-School Music Curriculum: An Action Research, Amanda Paige Smith

Visions of Research in Music Education

This study examined the experiences of children in two pre-school classes in a music curriculum that incorporated principles of the Reggio Emilia approach. Video recordings, transcriptions of child compositions, and field notes were analyzed through the lens of the Reggio principles. Findings demonstrated that light and shadow play enabled the children to make discoveries, empowered them to create their own learning experiences, and gave them agency over their learning and the learning of their classmates. Group composition provided a musical equivalent to the creation of murals in the visual arts domain of Reggio Emilia and enabled children to communicate musically …

The Role Of Multimedia Technology In A Hong Kong Higher Education Music Program, Wai-Chung Ho Oct 2021

The Role Of Multimedia Technology In A Hong Kong Higher Education Music Program, Wai-Chung Ho

Visions of Research in Music Education

New developments in e-learning and increasingly sophisticated learning technologies have made a major impact on Hong Kong universities, which welcomed the implementation of Information Communication Technology (ICT) as being core to their educational missions, and to this end encouraged all graduates to be computer or ICT literate. At the same time, academics are increasingly concerned with the processes of curriculum change with respect to ICT in higher education, as well as with their delivery of multimedia lectures. This paper aims to look at students’ comfort with multimedia technology as a means of receiving and presenting knowledge in their music programs. …
