Group B coxsackieviruses (CVB) containing six serotypes, B1–B6, affect various organs, and multiple serotypes can induce similar diseases such as myocarditis and pancreatitis. Yet, no vaccines are currently available to prevent these infections. Translationally, the derivation of vaccines that offer protection against multiple serotypes is highly desired. In that direction, we recently reported the generation of an attenuated strain of CVB3, termed Mt10, which completely protects against both myocarditis and pancreatitis induced by the homologous wild-type CVB3 strain. Here, we report that the Mt10 vaccine can induce cross-protection against multiple CVB serotypes as demonstrated with CVB4. We note that the …
Mathematically Modeling Plastic Pollution In The Great Lakes, Juliette Daily
Mathematically Modeling Plastic Pollution In The Great Lakes, Juliette Daily
Theses
Mass estimates of plastic pollution based on open water surface samples differ by several orders of magnitude from what is predicted based on production and input rates to the world’s oceans and the Great Lakes. Researchers have proposed that this missing plastic may be located in other reservoirs, including beaches, nearshore water, the water column, or sediment. Studying plastic via sampling efforts is logistically challenging and time consuming. Models, which provide full spatial and temporal distributions, can help fill in the knowledge gaps that sampling efforts leave. Here we present the first three-dimensional modeling effort in the Great Lakes to …

Ethylene plays profound roles in plant development. The rate-limiting enzyme of ethylene biosynthesis is 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) synthase (ACS), which is generally believed to be a single-activity enzyme evolving from aspartate aminotransferases. Here, we demonstrate that, in addition to catalyzing the conversion of S-adenosyl-methionine to the ethylene precursor ACC, genuine ACSs widely have Cβ-S lyase activity. Two N-terminal motifs, including a glutamine residue, are essential for conferring ACS activity to ACS-like proteins. Motif and activity analyses of ACS-like proteins from plants at different evolutionary stages suggest that the ACC-dependent pathway is uniquely developed in seed plants. A putative catalytic mechanism for …

Distribution, Habitat Affinities, And Conservation Of Prairie Moonwort (Botrychium Campestre) On Its Northern Range Limit, Vladimir Kricsfalusy
Western North American Naturalist
Prairie moonwort (Botrychium campestre W.H. Wagner & D.R. Farrar) from the adder’s tongue family (Ophioglossaceae) is a rare plant species in North America with a NatureServe designation of G3N2 (Globally Vulnerable, Nationally Imperiled). The species reaches its northern distribution limit in Saskatchewan, Canada. The range of B. campestre is described here from literature, herbarium data, and field studies. Two newly discovered peripheral populations are reported, and their habitats are characterized in detail. One of the new occurrences was monitored over a multiyear period, and changes in population and vegetation cover are described. Possible threats to the newest occurrences are …

Oppression, Resistance, And Empowerment: The Power Dynamics Of Naming And Un-Naming In African American Literature, 1794 To 2019, Melissa "Maggie" Romigh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Oppression, Resistance, and Empowerment: The Power Dynamics of Naming and Un-naming in African American Literature, 1794 to 2019 researches and discusses the way African American authors both discuss naming and un-naming in their works and the way they use naming in their works to illustrate the dynamics of power in relationships—racial, familial, gender-related, work-related, etc. Chapter 1 focuses on the earliest forms of African American literature, memoirs in particular, also known as “slave narratives.” In their memoirs, many of those men and women who were formerly enslaved wrote about having their names taken from them and replaced with names chosen …

Enhance Dopamine Autoreceptor Functioning During Blockade Of Dopamine Transporters, Rachel Laura Pace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Dopamine autoreceptors (DARs) and dopamine transporters (DATs) influence dopamine transmission in the brain's mesolimbic pathway. Prior studies have focused on how activation of DARs influences trafficking of DATs, but how DATs influence DARs remains unclear. Male and female C57BL/6J mice received daily injections of either cocaine (DAT blocker) or saline for seven days then underwent stereotaxic surgery to obtain fixed potential amperometric recordings of DAR-mediated dopamine release. All mice received a mid-surgery injection of cocaine, and DAR-mediated dopamine release was assessed once more during maximal DAT blockade. The current study found that DAR functionality was increased during peak cocaine effects, …

Simulation Of Bulk Evaporation And Condensation In Cryogenic Propellant Tanks Using The Energy Of Fluid Method, Elijah Gasmen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The design of cryogenic propellant storage systems for long duration space missions relies on accurate prediction of tank self-pressurization. Incident solar radiation heats the cryogenic liquids in the tank over time, vaporizing the cryogenic liquid. As the liquid vaporizes, the tank pressure increases. The objective of the current research is to develop a finite volume based Compuational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model of tank pressurization in reduced gravity using an Energy of Fluid (EOF) method. A commercially available CFD model is significantly enhanced to include the EOF method, which will solve the energy equation in terms of internal energy. Model validation …
Ecological Genomics Of Two Coastal Foundation Plant Species, Jeannie Mounger
Ecological Genomics Of Two Coastal Foundation Plant Species, Jeannie Mounger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
I was born and raised in rural Florida on a tributary of the Withlacoochee River. “Withlacoochee” comes from a series of Muscogee Creek words that together mean “big little water,” possibly owing to the seasonal fluctuations in the breadth and flow of the river or to the chain of lakes that in part form it. The name contains within it an understanding of the capacity of land and water to undergo great shifts. It conjures images of mutable boundaries, of water covering and receding across the landscape over and over again. Many of my clearest memories from childhood are related …
Research On Forage Quality: Progress And Priorities, J. A. Milne
Research On Forage Quality: Progress And Priorities, J. A. Milne
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A broad definition of forage quality is used and the purposes for which research on forage quality is undertaken currently are outlined. These range from research that provides simple measurements that describes the forage quality of a commercial product to research on forage quality to improve understanding of digestion processes. Much of the research in the last decade has related to improving predictive measurements. The different degrees of progress that have been made in the development and use of measurements to further our understanding of forage quality are described and related to their fitness of purpose. It is concluded that …

Forage Quality And The Environment, C. E. Lascano, A. Schmidt, R. Barahona
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The influence of environmental factors on forage quality of temperate and tropical grasses has been reviewed by several authors, who summarized how light, temperature, drought and soil nutrients influence chemical composition, and digestibility of forages grown in contrasting areas of the world. The effects of season of the year on forage growth, grazing behavior and animal performance have also been the subject of numerous papers and reviews. However, there are few recent reviews that summarize how changes in climatic and edaphic factors influence forage quality of legumes with variable levels of condensed tannins (CT), which are important secondary compounds in …

Screening Fresh Forages For Protein Degradation And Nutritive Value, Garry C. Waghorn, J. L. Burke
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A method has been developed to prepare fresh forages for in sacco and in vitro incubation by freezing and mincing to achieve a particle size distribution of dry matter (DM) similar to in vivo conditions. The method is described and data presented to indicate losses of nitrogen (N) during in sacco digestion and net yield of ammonia from proteolysis in vitro for 22 fresh and conserved forages. Grasses, legumes and herbs were evaluated, with fractional degradation rates of forages ranging from 0.07h-1 with tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) to 0.24 h-1 with chicory (Cichorium intybus). …

The Algorithmic Divide And Equality In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Peter K. Yu
The Algorithmic Divide And Equality In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Peter K. Yu
Florida Law Review
In the age of artificial intelligence, highly sophisticated algorithms have been deployed to provide analysis, detect patterns, optimize solutions, accelerate operations, facilitate self-learning, minimize human errors and biases, and foster improvements in technological products and services. Notwithstanding these tremendous benefits, algorithms and intelligent machines do not provide equal benefits to all. Just as the “digital divide” has separated those with access to the Internet, information technology, and digital content from those without, an emerging and ever-widening “algorithmic divide” now threatens to take away the many political, social, economic, cultural, educational, and career opportunities provided by machine learning and artificial intelligence. …

Pelts, Plumes, And Hides: White Traders Among The Seminole Indians, 1890-1930, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
Only a handful of Indians remained in Florida as the Third Seminole War ended in 1858. When Chief Billy Bowlegs led his band out of the Big Cypress Swamp, accepted a government indemnity, and boarded the steamer Grey Cloud which would take him and his group to their new home in the Indian Territory, he estimated that only thirty-eight warriors and their families were left behind. This was probably a low figure, but his information was relayed to the war department by Colonel Elias Rector, Superintendent of Indian Affairs, and plans were made to locate the remaining bands. Throughout that …

In 1565 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded St. Augustine on the Florida peninsula. Spanish activity pushed Spain's northern frontier up as far as Chesapeake Bay, but effective control extended only to Port Royal, South Carolina. Menéndez, and subsequent Florida governors, established missions and presidios along the Atlantic seacoast and in the interior areas to give added protection to Florida.

Florida's Image In Juvenile Fiction, 1909-1914, Peter A. Soderbergh
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the years between Appomattox and Sarajevo many young readers took their leisure pleasures from the pages of hardbacked novelettes. More respectable, to parents at least, than the "dime novel," the novellas exploded with the heady escapades of fictional boys and girls whose mental and physical reserves were unlimited. Descended from earlier models created by Martha Finley and William T. Adams— and rooted in the "success" ethos popularized by Horatio Alger, Jr.— the series published after 1898 outdid their prototypes in every aspect but quality.

Membership Of The Florida Constitutional Convention Of 1868. A Case Study Of Republican Factionalism In The Reconstruction South, Richard L. Hume
Florida Historical Quarterly
In accord with provisions of the Reconstruction Acts, members of the Florida constitutional convention assembled in Tallahassee in mid-January of 1868. An examination of the historiography of this controversial gathering, a body charged with framing the constitution which was to take effect when the state was returned to civilian rule, quickly reveals the existence of the standard Dunningite-revisionist dispute which has so characterized most writing on the postwar South. William Watson Davis, who completed his classic work on Reconstruction in Florida under the direction of William A. Dunning himself, believed that the delegates who attended the Florida "Black and Tan" …
Brood Abundance And Invertebrate Availability In Crop-Dominated Landscapes In The Prairie Pothole Region, Catrina V. Terry
Brood Abundance And Invertebrate Availability In Crop-Dominated Landscapes In The Prairie Pothole Region, Catrina V. Terry
LSU Master's Theses
The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) is the most important region for ducks in North America, producing over half the ducks on the continent, and it is a priority landscape for wetland and grassland conservation. Agricultural expansion has changed the PPR, and the majority of grasslands and potholes have been converted into row-crops. The loss of nesting habitat has directly caused nest success to decline. Most of the remaining wetlands are surrounded by row-crops, and are considered lower quality because they receive runoff of sediment and chemicals, which may decrease primary forage for young ducklings as well as inhibit wetland vegetation. …
Channelling Bamberger: An Unorthodox Appreciation Of Jeanne Bamberger's Work On Musical Development And Musical Understanding, Craig Graci
Visions of Research in Music Education
This article serves as a tribute to Bamberger as a notable researcher and teacher. The author articulates “working principles” that characterize Bamberger’s work and draws comparisons between two programs, Impromptu and Music Exploration Machine (MxM). From the perspective of music cognition, the most significant elements of this paper concern explicitly representing grouping structure and reductional structure of melodies within a computational formalism. From a developmental perspective, the most salient element is the identification and discussion of working principles associated with Bamberger’s compelling and challenging approach to research on musical development.
Representations Of Music: Neural Foundations And Metaphoric Descriptions, Wilfried Gruhn
Representations Of Music: Neural Foundations And Metaphoric Descriptions, Wilfried Gruhn
Visions of Research in Music Education
In Jeanne Bamberger's (1991) instructive case study on Jeff's learning, Bamberger observed and systematically ordered altering states of mental representations. In this study, Bamberger introduced and discussed a differentiated perspective on various forms of representation. In addressing the processing of music in the mind, mental representations can refer specifically to neural correlates of music or they can address more metaphoric ideas. Therefore, there is a proposed differentiation between mental representations if the mind is involved and neural representations if the brain is addressed. Furthermore, corporeal sensations and bodily excitations provide a necessary prerequisite for the development of mental and neural …

Spirituality In Music Education: Respecting And Elevating Students With Music, Tamara R. Freeman
Visions of Research in Music Education
Spiritual Music Education promotes deep, meaningful connections between teachers, students, and their music making. A spiritual approach focuses on every aspect of the student's human dimension-physical, emotional and cognitive-respecting and supporting each dimension equally. Consequently, students engage in music with increased body strength, clearer understanding, boundless creativity and heightened enjoyment. Most importantly, a spiritual music education instills a positive musical outlook for life. Six areas of spiritual music education are explored which are relevant to all vocal and instrumental disciplines, preschool through adulthood: The definition of "spirit" according to 20th century music philosophers, children revealing their deepest sense of spirituality, …

Evaluation Of Locally Delivered 1.2% Atorvastatin Gel Versus 2% Melatonin Gel As Adjunctive To Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy On Gcf Osteocalcin Level In Stage Ii Periodontitis Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Sarah Gamal Moussa
Future Dental Journal
Abstract:
Objective: Atorvastatin (ATV) and melatonin have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and were suggested to have positive effects when used in periodontitis cases. In periodontitis, osteocalcin (OC) was suggested to be a bone formation marker. Regarding bone turnover in periodontium, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) osteocalcin levels are more accurate than salivary or serum levels.
Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of local delivery of ATV gel and melatonin gel as adjuncts to scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of stage II periodontitis patients.
Subjects and method: Thirty-six patients having stage II periodontitis …
