Geodetic Model For Teaching Motion On The Earth's Spheroidal Surface, Boyd F. Edwards, John M. Edwards Nov 2021

Geodetic Model For Teaching Motion On The Earth's Spheroidal Surface, Boyd F. Edwards, John M. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

We explore the forces that shape our spheroidal Earth and the forces that govern the motion of a puck that slides without friction on its surface. The Earth's stable spheroidal shape (apart from small-scale surface features) is determined by balancing the gravitational forces that hold it together against the centrifugal forces that try to tear it apart. The motion of a puck on its surface differs profoundly from motion on a sphere because the Earth's spheroidal deformations neutralize the centrifugal and gravitational forces on the puck, leaving only the Coriolis force to govern the motion. Yet the Earth's spheroidal deformations …

Increasing The Content Of Long Chain Fatty Acids In Seed Oil, Xuemin Wang, Maoyin Li Nov 2021

Increasing The Content Of Long Chain Fatty Acids In Seed Oil, Xuemin Wang, Maoyin Li

UMSL Patents

Provided are plants that express, or overexpress, a pPLAIIIδ protein. Constitutive or seed-specific expression of pPLAIIIδ protein in Arabidopsis increases seed oil content, the amount of C20 and C22 fatty acids, and the amount of C56, C58, and C60 triacylglycerols, effectively resulting in significantly higher oil yield per plant. Use of pPLAIIIδ is therefore an effective biotechnological tool to significantly increase plant yield, including oil, and the amount of high value long chain fatty acids in agricultural and horticultural crops, especially oilseed crops.

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Sin Nombre orthohantavirus (SNV), a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus that is carried and transmitted by the North American deer mouse Peromyscus maniculatus, can cause infection in humans through inhalation of aerosolized excreta from infected rodents. This infection can lead to hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), which has an ∼36% case-fatality rate. We used reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) to confirm SNV infection in a patient and identified SNV in lung tissues in wild-caught rodents from potential sites of exposure. Using viral whole-genome sequencing (WGS), we identified the likely site of transmission and discovered SNV in multiple rodent species not previously known …

A sufficient vascular network within the feto-maternal interface is necessary for placental function. Several pregnancy abnormalities have been associated with abnormal vascular formations in the placenta. We hypothesized that growth and expansion of the placental vascular network in the equine (Equus caballus) placenta is regulated by estrogens (estrogen family hormones), a hormone with a high circulating concentration during equine gestation. Administration of letrozole, a potent and specific inhibitor of aromatase, during the first trimester (D30 to D118), decreased circulatory estrone sulfate concentrations, increased circulatory testosterone and androstenedione concentrations, and tended to reduce the weight of the fetus ( …

Development Of Gluten-Free Sugar Cookies Using Kudzu Starch As A Partial Fat Replacement Ingredient, Saabirah Carr Nov 2021

Development Of Gluten-Free Sugar Cookies Using Kudzu Starch As A Partial Fat Replacement Ingredient, Saabirah Carr

Honors College Theses

The prevalence of kudzu has risen in the United States since its introduction in 1876. Though its invasiveness may play a negative role in our ecosystems, its roots have been used nutritionally in China for over 2,000 years because of their high starch content. In the United States, the use of kudzu starch as food products is limited. This study compared the moisture content and spread of reduced-fat gluten-free cookies prepared with kudzu starch-thickened aqueous mixture to similar gluten-free cookies prepared with rice flour and gluten-containing all-purpose wheat flour sugar cookies with kudzu starch, to gluten-containing sugar cookies (control). Moisture …

Risk Based Simulations Of Sporeformers Population Throughout The Dairy Production And Processing Chain: Evaluating On-Farm Interventions In Nebraska Dairy Farms, Rhaisa A. Crespo Ramírez Nov 2021

Risk Based Simulations Of Sporeformers Population Throughout The Dairy Production And Processing Chain: Evaluating On-Farm Interventions In Nebraska Dairy Farms, Rhaisa A. Crespo Ramírez

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sporeformer bacteria are ubiquitous in the farm environment. These bacteria produce enzymes that negatively affect the quality of dairy products representing a problem for the dairy industry. Two major issues associated with high levels of sporeformers in raw milk are shelf-life reduction of fluid milk and market limitations for milk powder. Specific attention has been given to the contamination of milk powders with sporeformers due to their ability to survive pasteurization and milk powder processing conditions. Hence, the control of sporeformers is crucial to benefit the whole dairy industry. Researchers have suggested that certain management practices could decrease sporeformers in …

Italian Society During World War Ii, Shira Klein Nov 2021

Italian Society During World War Ii, Shira Klein

History Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"This chapter showcases what life was like for ordinary Italians during the Second World War. Up to the 1980s, a typical textbook on Italian history told a narrative of victimhood and heroism, promoting the idea that most Italians had never wanted to join the war in the first place, and resisted both the Fascists and the Germans. It was Mussolini and his henchmen, according to this narrative, who led unwilling Italians into war. The Italian rank-and-file were anti-Fascist heroes and victims of the leadership’s repressive tactics, whereas the Fascist leaders were villainous perpetrators.[i] Since the 1990s, historians have shown that …

The Real Me: Shared Technology’S Impact On Status From The Lens Of Positioning Theory, Christina Nishiyama, Michael E. Nussbaum, Michael S. Van Winkle Nov 2021

The Real Me: Shared Technology’S Impact On Status From The Lens Of Positioning Theory, Christina Nishiyama, Michael E. Nussbaum, Michael S. Van Winkle

College of Education Faculty Research

Participation in collaborative learning environments has demonstrated significant learning advantages due to opportunities for group members to contribute to shared problem-solving processes, shared goals, and co-elaboration of knowledge. Furthermore, research has shown that higher levels of social perceptiveness are positively correlated with higher levels of group performance. However, collaboration is not always successful, sometimes exhibiting imbalances of power and status. In this study, positioning theory and interaction analysis were used to investigate (a) interactions in four racially and gender-mixed groups (of three university students each) working with technology and (b) their negotiated positions of power and status. Results showed that …

Say Her Name: The Narrative Afterlives Of Breonna Taylor, Tyler S. Smith Nov 2021

Say Her Name: The Narrative Afterlives Of Breonna Taylor, Tyler S. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Within the growing literature and media coverage of police misconduct and brutality, Black women and girls are functionally invisible. Since the Black Lives Matter movement began the names of only two women have stood out among the Black male victims we know by name: Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor. Here, I will explore through a Black feminist analytic framework, how the intersectionalities of gender and race contributed to a delay in awareness and accountability for the death of Breonna Taylor. This content analysis looked at the media coverage of Breonna Taylor for the one-year period (3/13/20-3/13/21) to uncover the reasons, …

Fungal airway infection (airway mycosis) is an important cause of allergic airway diseases such as asthma, but the mechanisms by which fungi trigger asthmatic reactions are poorly understood. Here, we leverage wild-type and mutant Candida albicans to determine how this common fungus elicits characteristic Th2 and Th17 cell-dependent allergic airway disease in mice. We demonstrate that rather than proteinases that are essential virulence factors for molds, C. albicans instead promoted allergic airway disease through the peptide toxin candidalysin. Candidalysin activated platelets through the Von Willebrand factor (VWF) receptor GP1bα to release the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf-1 (Dkk-1) to drive Th2 and …

Social Experiences Of Muslim Americans Regarding The Intolerance Displayed By Non-Muslims, Munder Abderrazzaq Nov 2021

Social Experiences Of Muslim Americans Regarding The Intolerance Displayed By Non-Muslims, Munder Abderrazzaq

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Non-Muslims in the United States have openly expressed their opposition regarding Muslim Americans, which has led to the racial profiling and unequal treatment of Muslim Americans. Literature regarding the intolerance displayed by majority members indicates a need for further research that explores the point of view of minorities in the United States. Intolerance is defined as the refusal and unwillingness to respect or tolerate persons of a different social group or members of minority groups who hold beliefs contrary to one’s own. The intolerance displayed among members of different religious and cultural backgrounds can limit the ability to discover new …

Lily Leaf Beetle, Ann Mull, Lori R. Spears Nov 2021

Lily Leaf Beetle, Ann Mull, Lori R. Spears

All Current Publications

The lily leaf beetle (LLB) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is an important pest from Eurasia that threatens native and cultivated true lilies (Lilium spp.) and fritillaries (Fritillaria spp.). It is also known as the red lily leaf beetle or scarlet lily beetle. LLB was first reported in North America in Montréal, Canada, in 1945 and in the U.S. in 1992 in Massachusetts, likely arriving via European shipments of lily bulbs. LLB has been detected in nine of the 10 Canadian provinces and 14 U.S. states, including the New England states, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Washington (EDDMapS, 2021). Based on LLB’s native distribution …

Evaluation Of Centrosema Rotundifolium For Sand-Soil Savannas In Eastern Venezuela, I. Rodríguez, R. Schultze-Kraft, S. González Nov 2021

Evaluation Of Centrosema Rotundifolium For Sand-Soil Savannas In Eastern Venezuela, I. Rodríguez, R. Schultze-Kraft, S. González

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

An evaluation of a collection of amphicarpic Centrosema rotundifolium showed considerable variability among the six accessions tested, regarding above- and below-ground seed production. Dry-season forage yields were very low but rainy-season yields reached acceptable levels. Contents of crude protein, P and Ca were intermediate to high (CP and P) or low (Ca). Three accessions are suggested for on-farm testing in association with grasses in order to explore the plant persistence implications of belowground seed production under practical conditions. Furthermore, the potential of this amphicarpic species for the conservation of sandy soils deserves attention.

Left-Handed Dna: The Right Way Forward, Tracy Mallette

Shared Knowledge Conference

Rapid detection of emerging pathogens, environmental monitoring of waterways, and cancer treatments that operate on a cell by cell basis are all technological advances which could be achieved with DNA-based molecular computers. DNA encodes the building blocks of life and researchers have already shown that it can be used as a powerful tool for us to build nanoscale devices that can interact with the molecular world. However, DNA-based molecular devices are susceptible to degradation by natural defense mechanisms called nucleases. This makes operating in the desired biological settings challenging and has thus limited their practical application. My NSF-funded research in …

Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters Protein Expression Of Stress And Immune Factors In The Amygdala Following Early Life Stress., Annette Fernandez Nov 2021

Moderate Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters Protein Expression Of Stress And Immune Factors In The Amygdala Following Early Life Stress., Annette Fernandez

Shared Knowledge Conference

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the outcome of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) that results in cognitive, mood and neuroimmune disorders. PAE negatively impacts the brain stress-response system by dysregulating the expression of stress neuropeptides such as corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), and neuroimmune factors including interlukin-1beta (IL-1β). Both CRH and IL-1β are suspected to play a role in chronic anxiety and depression. In animal models, studies have characterized the key brain region, the amygdala, in regulating stress and emotion such as anxiety and depression. Prior research demonstrates that stress enhances amygdala activity and alters the expression of neuroimmune factors. However, …

Evaluation Of Thermal Infrared Imaging From Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles For Arboreal Wildlife Surveillance, Blair Mirka Nov 2021

Evaluation Of Thermal Infrared Imaging From Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles For Arboreal Wildlife Surveillance, Blair Mirka

Shared Knowledge Conference

An important component of wildlife management and conservation is monitoring the health and population size of wildlife species. Monitoring the population size of an animal group can inform researchers of habitat use, potential changes in habitat and the resulting behavioral adaptation, individual health, and the effectiveness of conservation efforts. Arboreal primates are difficult to monitor as their habitat is often poorly accessible and most primate species have some degree of camouflage, making them hard to observe in and below the tree canopy. Surveys conducted using uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal infrared (TIR) cameras can help overcome these limitations …

Distributional Effect Of Exposure To Cafos: A Case Study Of Large Dairies In New Mexico, Suraj Ghimire Nov 2021

Distributional Effect Of Exposure To Cafos: A Case Study Of Large Dairies In New Mexico, Suraj Ghimire

Shared Knowledge Conference

The industrialization of the agricultural sector has turned into a double-edged sword for the future of humanity on this planet. On the one hand, without industrialized agriculture, there would be insufficient food and fiber to feed the growing human population. On the other hand, the rapid expansion of large-scale farms has resulted in an unprecedented amount of negative externalities impacting the environment and human health. While the benefits of abundance have been enjoyed evenly across the board, the negative impacts are borne mainly by and concentrated in the historically underprivileged communities. The goal of this research is to look at …

Fish Gelatin Coating As An Antimicrobial Agent On Wild-Caught Louisiana Shrimp, Hunter S. Songy Nov 2021

Fish Gelatin Coating As An Antimicrobial Agent On Wild-Caught Louisiana Shrimp, Hunter S. Songy

LSU Master's Theses

Seafood has a short shelf-life because of its unstable nature. Shrimp has a shelf-life of only eight days. Edible coatings, like those made from gelatin, have been used to apply antimicrobial agents to food product surfaces. Organic acids are naturally occurring, low-cost options that have been proven to effectively reduce bacterial loads on food products and extend their shelf-life. Gelatin can be extracted from catfish skin, helping to reduce product waste. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential effectiveness of fish skin gelatin as an antimicrobial coating alone and in combination with lactic acid, and then compare …

Role Of Aim2 Inflammasome In Pulmonary Host Defense Against Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced Pneumonia, Bibek Dhakal Nov 2021

Role Of Aim2 Inflammasome In Pulmonary Host Defense Against Staphylococcus Aureus-Induced Pneumonia, Bibek Dhakal

LSU Master's Theses

Bacterial pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under the age of five, claiming the lives of two million children each year. Staphylococcus aureus is the extracellular Gram-positive bacteria that causes necrotizing pneumonia. Moreover, the spread of antibiotic-resistant and hypervirulent strains has made treatment more challenging. Absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) is a dsDNA-sensing cytosolic innate immune receptor that activates inflammasomes and is crucial for host defense against intracellular bacteria and DNA viruses. However, its role in extracellular bacterial pathogen-induced pneumonia is unclear. Therefore, understanding how AIM2 initiates host responses during Staphylococcus aureus is crucial for the development …
