The relationship between political affiliations and diet-related discussions on social media has not been studied on a population level. This study used a cost- and -time effective framework to leverage, aggregate, and analyze data from social media. This paper enhances our understanding of diet-related discussions with respect to political orientations in U.S. states. This mixed methods study used computational methods to collect tweets containing “diet” or “#diet” shared in a year, identified tweets posted by U.S. Twitter users, disclosed topics of tweets, and compared democratic, republican, and swing states based on the weight of topics. A qualitative method was employed …

Sexual harassment has been the topic of thousands of research articles in the 20th and 21st centuries. Several review papers have been developed to synthesize the literature about sexual harassment. While traditional literature review studies provide valuable insights, these studies have some limitations including analyzing a limited number of papers, being time-consuming and labor-intensive, focusing on a few topics, and lacking temporal trend analysis. To address these limitations, this paper employs both computational and qualitative approaches to identify major research topics, explore temporal trends of sexual harassment topics over the past few decades, and point to future possible directions in …

Effect Of Occupational Welding Fume Exposure On Hemostatic & Inflammatory Blood Parameters And Cardiovascular Risks On Welders And Non-Welders In Confined Space: A Longitudinal Study, Ning Li
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Occupational welding fumes contains varies of toxic metal particles and may affect cardiovascular system like the Particulate Matters (PM). The hypothetical mechanisms of welding fume toxicity center on oxidative stress and inflammatory, similar as the mechanisms that link PM2.5 and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The popular mechanisms on toxicity of welding fumes agreed that PM was associated with increased WBC and neutrophil counts, and increased WBC counts lead to higher Cardiovascular risks and Coronary heart disease risks.Urine Mn and Cr level in the welder group was significantly higher than the non-welder group (Mn: 0.96 VS 0.22 ug/g creatinine, p < 0.001; Cr: 0.63 VS 0.22 ug/g creatinine, p < 0.01). One third of the non-welders were in the high metal-exposed group. When all the participants were divided by occupation type, two times measurements revealed that Hct, WBC and Eosinophil indices of the welder groups were significantly higher (all p < 0.05). Linear regression models showed that, comparing to non-welders, welding could cause alterations to most hemostatic indices majorly by effecting an increase: Hct (β = 0.015, p = 0.007), WBC (β = 0.047, p = 0.033), Eosinophil ratio % (β = 0.345, p = 0.001). When all the participants were divided by metal level groups, there was bidirectional relationship between urine Mn level and WBC count in the linear regression models ((β = - 0.049, p = 0.045 and β = 0.059, p = 0.007, separately for starting and ending point). The study participants (both welders and non-welders) had an average systolic BP in the “high normal” range (Welders: 125.21 ± 11.23 mmHg for systolic BP Non-welders: mean = 126.33 ± 11.41 mmHg for systolic BP). Systolic blood pressure of the welder group increased significantly higher than the non-welder group after one year follow up (welder group VS non-welder: 4.13 ± 11.76 VS - 0.15 ± 6.60 mmHg, p = 0.037).

Neuroprotective Effect Of Passiflora Edulissims Against Amyloid Beta-Induced Neurotoxicity, Shuqin Cao
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a common and devastating disease characterized by pathological aggregations of beta-amyloid (Aβ) plaques extracellularly, and Tau tangles intracellularly. While our understandings of the aetiologies of AD have greatly expanded over the decades, there is no drug available to stop disease progression. This study involves two parts. First, we demonstrate the potential of P. edulis pericarp (PP) extract in protecting against Aβ-mediated neurotoxicity in mammalian cells and Caenorhabditis elegans models of AD. We show PP protects against memory deficit, neuronal loss, and promotes longevity in the Aβ model of AD via stimulation of mitophagy, the selective cellular …

Process mining is the art and science of (semi)automatically generating business processes from a large number of logs coming from potentially heterogeneous systems. With the recent advent of Industry 4.0 analog enterprise environments such as floor shops and long supply chains are bound to full digitization. In this context interest in process mining has been invigorated. Multilayer graphs constitute a broad class of combinatorial objects for representing, among others, business processes in a natural and intuitive way. Specifically the concepts of state and transition, central to the majority of existing approaches, are inherent in these graphs and coupled with both …

In Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L.: The Court Protects Student Social Media but Leaves Unanswered Questions, published in the Cato Supreme Court Review, David L. Hudson Jr. analyzes the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision addressing the scope of public schools’ authority over off-campus student speech on social media. Situating Mahanoy within the Court’s broader K–12 student speech jurisprudence—from Barnette and Tinker to Fraser, Hazelwood, and Morse—the Article explains how the Court declined to adopt a categorical rule excluding off-campus speech from regulation while nevertheless ruling in favor of the student. The majority recognized diminished school …

Prey choice is the non-random foraging and consumption of prey species by their predators, and is therefore the basis for studies of topics as diverse as quantifying food webs, predator–prey relationships, and optimal-foraging models. Malaclemys terrapin (Diamond-back Terrapin) is a diet generalist with a large geographic distribution: the US Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Massachusetts to Texas. Individual terrapins have relatively small home ranges and feed primarily on local mollusc species. In feeding trials with 1 prey species and 2 prey species, wild-caught terrapins from New York readily consumed Mya arenaria (Soft-shelled Clam) and Geukensia demissa (Atlantic Ribbed Mussel), preferring …

Gephyrin has long been thought of as a master regulator for inhibitory synapses, acting as a scaffold to organize γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABAARs) at the post-synaptic density. Accordingly, gephyrin immunostaining has been used as an indicator of inhibitory synapses; despite this, the pan-synaptic localization of gephyrin to specific classes of inhibitory synapses has not been demonstrated. Genetically encoded fibronectin intrabodies generated with mRNA display (FingRs) against gephyrin (Gephyrin.FingR) reliably label endogenous gephyrin, and can be tagged with fluorophores for comprehensive synaptic quantitation and monitoring. Here we investigated input- and target-specific localization of gephyrin at a defined …

Removal Of Ferrous And Arsenic From Contaminated Groundwater By Co-Precipitation Coupling With Membrane Separation Process, Bonita Pen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This work aimed to treat contaminated groundwater with arsenic and ferrous iron pollutants to be drinking water standard following by WHO by co-precipitation process and membrane separation process. The relative effect of different solid media types (scouring sponge, scouring pad, plastic ring, and activated carbon foam) and operating conditions on oxygen mass transfer coefficient (KLa) and hydrodynamic bubble parameters was studied. The optimization process of ferrous oxidation and arsenic removal was observed by Design of Experiment (DOE) with Central Composition Design of Response Surface Methodology (CCD-RSM). Lastly, separation process was experimented with conventional process and membrane technology, i.e., settling process, …

Natural Rubber Films Reinforced With Cellulose And Chitosan Prepared By Latex Aqueous Microdispersion, Naipaporn Sutipanwihan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Plastics are one of the derived products from petroleum material, which have been used in many applications worldwide, because of their various properties. However, plastic wastes create toxic environmental pollutions and problems because of their toxic constituents and non-biodegradability. Accordingly, nature materials have been proposed as a substitute for petroleum materials for bioplastic production. Natural rubber (NR) is a product from natural, which is well-known for its high elasticity. However, there are some drawbacks such as low tensile strength and low abrasion resistance. Moreover, its applications are also limited because of its poor resistance to oil and solvents. Therefore, the …
