Evaluation Of Bone Formation On Orthopedic Implant Surfaces Using An Ex-Vivo Bone Bioreactor System, Rupak Dua, Hugh Jones, Philip C Noble
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Recent advances in materials and manufacturing processes have allowed the fabrication of intricate implant surfaces to facilitate bony attachment. However, refinement and evaluation of these new design strategies are hindered by the cost and complications of animal studies, particularly during early iterations in the development process. To address this problem, we have previously constructed and validated an ex-vivo bone bioreactor culture system that can maintain the viability of bone samples for an extended period ex-vivo. In this study, we investigated the mineralization of a titanium wire mesh scaffold under both static and dynamic culturing using our ex vivo bioreactor system. …

The Horror Of History: Medieval And Early Modern Christianity And The Use Of Narratological Persecution, William Cole Younger
The Horror Of History: Medieval And Early Modern Christianity And The Use Of Narratological Persecution, William Cole Younger
Student Theses and Dissertations
The history of emotion has given a bit of attention to the role that fear plays as a historical motive. Yet, what fear is or how it may be used when examining primary sources which possess fictitious tales has sorely been neglected. In order to address this, this thesis argues that historians need to employ philosophical concepts of horror in order to truly grasp the unique qualities that emerge from these tales. This thesis provides a historical framework for these philosophical understandings of horror by examining the medieval and early modern mentalities which served as a framework for the formalization …
Shifts In The Acute Stress Response In Red-Eared Sliders (Trachemys Scripta) During The Activity Season, Jennifer Lauren Terry
Shifts In The Acute Stress Response In Red-Eared Sliders (Trachemys Scripta) During The Activity Season, Jennifer Lauren Terry
Student Theses and Dissertations
Tradeoffs may occur among biological processes if individuals are energetically challenged. Glucocorticoids (GC) promote essential daily processes and energy reprioritization during stressful or energy-demanding periods and provide insight to an individual’s energetic state. I captured 123 wild adult red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta) outside of Cherry Valley, Arkansas in the Arkansas Delta between May and October 2019 to assess energy tradeoffs between innate immunity and GC secretion. I collected blood samples at 0–3, 30, and 60 min and used plasma in bacterial killing assays and radioimmunoassays to assess innate immunity and corticosterone concentrations, respectively. Tradeoffs were not evident in this population …
Using Deep Learning To Predict The Path Of A Shuttlecock In Badminton, Sachleen Singh
Using Deep Learning To Predict The Path Of A Shuttlecock In Badminton, Sachleen Singh
Student Theses and Dissertations
With this thesis we intend to predict the movement of the shuttlecock given ten frames of a video for the each of the next ten frames. We also present a new regression model for the prediction of the frames called PIFR [Present Imputation and Future Regression] which consists of two models prepared for the same. Both the models try to predict the “future” position of the shuttlecock, the players and their rackets. There are two parts of the prediction network: An object detection stage based YOLO and the regression model. [40]
Creativity In Science, Engineering, And The Arts: A Study Of Undergraduate Students' Perceptions, Dildora F. Beaulieu
Creativity In Science, Engineering, And The Arts: A Study Of Undergraduate Students' Perceptions, Dildora F. Beaulieu
Dissertations and Theses
Creativity is widely recognized as being invaluable for human development and a crucial 21st century talent. Preparing students for an uncertain and complex world requires that higher education promote students' imagination, originality, curiosity, and flexibility and build their capacity to take risks to try new approaches to problem-posing and problem-solving. However, little is known about how undergraduates enrolled in different disciplines view creativity. This quantitative study at a university in the northwestern United States assessed how undergraduate students in different academic disciplines responded to an instrument on creativity measurement developed by Dlouhy (2012). The study asked: How do undergraduates …

The Use Of Rna Interference To Investigate The Role Of Zmpr10 In Salt Stress Response And Mtl/Nld/Zmpla1 In The Improvement Of Haploid Induction In Maize, Max Carl Miller
LSU Master's Theses
RNA interference (RNAi) is a useful tool in gene characterization and its use is expanding into more practical fields. Two RNAi techniques were used in this case. The studies conducted in the chapter two use transgenic maize lines containing an RNAi construct targeting ZmPR10 to characterize its potential role in growth and development in response to salinity stress. T1 transgenic plants from events A44S1-35-3 and A44S1-3-4, which had significantly reduced ZmPR10 expression compared to the non-transgenic controls, showed no differences compared to the controls in heights after 30 and 60 days, nor did the T2 transgenic from these …
Parental Incarceration And Extracurricular Activities: The Effects On Children's Aggressive Behaviors, Danielle Webb Mcnichol
Parental Incarceration And Extracurricular Activities: The Effects On Children's Aggressive Behaviors, Danielle Webb Mcnichol
Student Theses and Dissertations
Previous literature has determined that exposure to parental incarceration increases the chances of children having behavior problems. Using data from the Fragile Families and Childhood Wellbeing Study, the identification of parental incarceration and how it impacts fragile families will be explored. This study focuses on how parental incarceration affects an adolescent’s social, emotional, and behavioral development and how that leads to behavioral problems and delinquency. Further, the current study will examine if involvement in extracurricular activities moderates the relationship between parental incarceration and behavior problems. Identifying how exposure to parental incarceration affects adolescents could help identify new and additional ways …

Phenotypic plasticity is one mechanism whereby species may cope with stressful environmental changes associated with climate change. Reef building corals present a good model for studying phenotypic plasticity because they have experienced rapid climate-driven declines in recent decades (within a single generation of many corals), often with differential survival among individuals during heat stress. Underlying differences in thermotolerance may be driven by differences in baseline levels of environmental stress, including pollution stress. To examine this possibility, acute heat stress experiments were conducted on Acropora hyacinthus from 10 sites around Tutuila, American Samoa with differing nutrient pollution impact. A threshold-based heat …

With the aging population, dementia emerges as a public health concern. In 2012, the Health and Retirement Study found that 8.8% of adults over 65 years suffered from dementia. The etiopathogenesis and treatment of dementia are not well understood. Antioxidant properties of Vitamin E and its major elements tocopherols and tocotrienols have been reported to be effective in slowing down the progression of dementia from its initial stage of Mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Therefore, the current review aims to explore the role of vitamin E on MCI. A literature search using the key words “Vitamin E, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and mild …

Early theories of efficient coding suggested the visual system could compress the world by learning to represent features where information was concentrated, such as contours. This view was validated by the discovery that neurons in posterior visual cortex respond to edges and curvature. Still, it remains unclear what other information-rich features are encoded by neurons in more anterior cortical regions (e.g., inferotemporal cortex). Here, we use a generative deep neural network to synthesize images guided by neuronal responses from across the visuocortical hierarchy, using floating microelectrode arrays in areas V1, V4 and inferotemporal cortex of two macaque monkeys. We hypothesize …

The province of Sindh reported the first COVID-19 case in Pakistan on 26th February 2020. The Government of Sindh has employed numerous control measures to limit its spread. However, for low-and middle-income countries such as Pakistan, the management protocols for controlling a pandemic are not always as definitive as they would be in other developed nations. Given the dire socio-economic conditions of Sindh, continuation of province-wise lockdowns may inadvertently cause a potential economic breakdown. By using a data driven SEIR modelling framework, this paper describes the evolution of the epidemic projections because of government control measures. The data from reported …

The heterogeneous family of complexes comprising Polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1) is instrumental for establishing facultative heterochromatin that is repressive to transcription. However, two PRC1 species, ncPRC1.3 and ncPRC1.5, are known to comprise novel components, AUTS2, P300, and CK2, that convert this repressive function to that of transcription activation. Here, we report that individuals harboring mutations in the HX repeat domain of AUTS2 exhibit defects in AUTS2 and P300 interaction as well as a developmental disorder reflective of Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, which is mainly associated with a heterozygous pathogenic variant in CREBBP/EP300. Moreover, the absence of AUTS2 or mutation in its …

Pelagic Tunicate Grazing On Marine Microbes Revealed By Integrative Approaches, Kelly R. Sutherland, Anne W. Thompson
Pelagic Tunicate Grazing On Marine Microbes Revealed By Integrative Approaches, Kelly R. Sutherland, Anne W. Thompson
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Marine microorganisms comprise a large fraction of ocean carbon and are central players in global biogeochemical cycling. Significant gaps remain, however, in our understanding of processes that determine the fate, distribution, and community structure of microbial communities. Protists and viruses are accepted as being part of the microbial loop and a source of microbial mortality. However, pelagic tunicates (salps, doliolods, pyrosomes, and appendicularians), which are abundant in oceanic and coastal environments and consume microorganisms with higher individual grazing rates than other common grazers, remain underappreciated in their role controlling microbial communities, distributions, and flux through ecosystems. In spite of sampling …

Characterizing patterns of habitat use is an important first step for effective conservation planning. Species restricted to low-lying islands are at greatest risk from climate change-related sea level rise, and requirements for breeding and foraging habitat may determine their risk from tidal inundation. The endangered Micronesian Scrubfowl (Megapodius laperouse senex) is a model species for understanding these impacts. This species faces the cumulative challenges of tourist visitation, invasive species, and rising sea levels, yet little is understood about its habitat use in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon Conservation Area (RISL) of Palau. We studied the habitat requirements of this mound-nesting …

Supplementation Of Dairy Cows Under Alfalfa Grazing Conditions With Ground Corn, A. R. Castillo, L. A. Romero, O. R. Quaino, E. A. Comeron, M. C. Gaggiotti
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Two trials were carried out during the Autumn of 1991 and 1992 to investigate the effects of corn supplementation on lactational performance of dairy cows under alfalfa grazing. Forty two multiparous Holstein cows with 30-60 days in milk were used in a randomized continuous design with covariance analysis. The treatments were 0.0, 3.5 and 7.0 kg.day-1 of corn grain supplementation (T1, T2 and T3 respectively) in 1991 and 0.0, 3.0, 6.0 and 9.0 kg.day-1 (T1, T2, T3 and T4 respectively) in 1992. Six cows per treatment were used divided in 3 cows per grazing paddock. Dry matter (DM) …

Animal Production From Tree-Pasture Association Systems In Brazil, João C. Saibro
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Agroforestry systems (AFS) in general and silvipastoral systems (SPS) in particular, have been studied intensively in Brazil since the 1980’s. The majority of the research work has been conducted in the wet tropical Amazon region, in the semi-arid conditions of the Northeast, and under subtropical soil and climatic conditions in the Southeast or in the South. Research emphasis has been placed on interactions between the main components of AFS: tree, pasture, soil and microclimatic elements. Evaluation of animal performance in SPS generally has not been the main objective of experiments. A recent survey of research on SPS using Eucalyptus spp …
La Méditerranée Des Artistes: Ouverture Sur Le Présent, Maria Grazia Messina
La Méditerranée Des Artistes: Ouverture Sur Le Présent, Maria Grazia Messina
Artl@s Bulletin

Disclosing The Ultimate Mediterranean Cubist Village. Place, Identity And Politics In Eduardo Viana’S Olhão Landscapes, Joana Cunha Leal
Disclosing The Ultimate Mediterranean Cubist Village. Place, Identity And Politics In Eduardo Viana’S Olhão Landscapes, Joana Cunha Leal
Artl@s Bulletin
This article studies the early 1920s Olhão views painted by Eduardo Viana (1881–1967). It analyzes Viana’s turn to Algarvian-Mediterranean landscapes, while considering the emergence of Olhão as the Portuguese “cubist village” rendered just before its regionalization by the fascist cultural industry. I contend that Viana’s vistas stem from his cosmopolitan profile and earlier avant-garde experiences, suggesting also that Olhão’s Mediterranean “cubist”-built environment offered Viana the prospect of a denationalized geography. The relationship between identity, place and politics will therefore be discussed.

Beyond Noucentisme: Joaquim Sunyer’S Mediterranean Pastoral, Maria Lluïsa Faxedas
Artl@s Bulletin
Taking as case study the painting Pastoral (1910–11), one of the iconic works of the Catalan artist Joaquim Sunyer (1874–1956), this paper examines the established link between Mediterraneanism and Noucentisme in Catalan culture in the first decades of the twentieth century. A look at how this work was received when it was first exhibited, and the sub-sequent re- reading of its iconography, enables us to understand Pastoral nowadays not as much as a symbol of Noucentisme, but more as a potential meeting point between the different aesthetic trends of the period.

Les Jardins « Du Climat De L’Oranger » : Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier (1861-1930), Traditions Méditerranéennes Et Jardin À La Française, Camille Lesouef
Artl@s Bulletin

“Dusty” Arcadias: Pastoral Visions And Greek Landscape In The Work Of Fred Boissonnas In The Context Of Mediterranean Cultural Myth, Marianna Karali
Artl@s Bulletin
In the following paper, I examine the possible affiliation the Swiss commercial photographer Fred Boissonnas shared with certain groups of Greek-French Nationalists as early as in 1903-1907 and the way this particular nexus inspired the integrity of his work on Greek landscape, forming as well his naturalistic vision on photography. Within the visionary spectrum of a northerner excursionist and the aesthetic eye of a Pictorialist photographer, Boissonnas marked an Innovative gaze upon Mediterranean Arcadian Imagery, altering the Symbolic Classicism of von Gloeden paradigm of Italian South.

Opposing Strands: The Mediterranean As Site Of Cultural Conflict Around 1900, Neil F. Mcwilliam
Artl@s Bulletin
From antiquity to the Third Republic, this article follows visual and literary representations that measured space, time and ideological oppositions that spawned an image of the Mediterranean as an area of transmission and cultural tension. It focuses on three theorists: the head of Action Française, Charles Maurras; the novelist Louis Bertrand; and critic and cultural impresario Joachim Gasquet. Each contributed to the formation of an image of the Mediterranean basin as the birthplace of European heritage and a battlefield in a struggle against the forces of democracy and cultural hybridization.
