Turkish Journal of Biology
We aimed to assess the effects of bradykinin (BK) on the proliferation, apoptosis, and cycle of glomerular mesangial cells via the transforming growth factor-ß 1 (TGF-ß1)/Smad signaling pathway. Rat glomerular mesangial cells, HBZY-1, were divided into normal group (untreated), model group (5 ng/L TGF-ß1), BK group (5 ng/L TGF-ß1 + 1 ng/L BK), and inhibitor group [5 ng/L TGF-ß1 + 1 ng/L LY2109761 (TGF-ß1-specific inhibitor)]. The cell proliferation, cycle, apoptosis, expression of type I collagen (Col-1), and protein expressions of Col-1, TGF-ß1, and phosphorylated Smad2 (p-Smad2) were detected by EdU labeling, flow cytometry, acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) dual staining, immunofluorescence …

Viral pathogens seriously decrease the yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) -an important agricultural crop. Therefore, there is a demand for potato cultivars resistant to multiple viruses. Ribonucleases (RNases) are supposed to be engaged to antiviral response in plants. Heterologous RNase gene expression provides a tool for production of cultivars with multiple resistance to viruses and viroids. Transgenic potato cultivars Luhivs'ka and Lasynak with heterologous genes bov and ZRNase II of apoplastic RNases from Bos taurus and Zinnia elegans respectively were obtained via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The presence of bov and ZRNase II transgenes was confirmed by PCR analysis. RNase activity …

Neuropathy In Covid-19 Associated With Dysbiosis-Related Inflammation, Busra Aktas, Belma Aslim
Turkish Journal of Biology
Although COVID-19 affects mainly lungs with a hyperactive and imbalanced immune response, gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms such as diarrhea and neuropathic pains have been described as well in patients with COVID-19. Studies indicate that gut-lung axis maintains host homeostasis and disease development with the association of immune system, and gut microbiota is involved in the COVID-19 severity in patients with extrapulmonary conditions. Gut microbiota dysbiosis impairs the gut permeability resulting in translocation of gut microbes and their metabolites into the circulatory system and induce systemic inflammation which, in turn, can affect distal organs such as the brain. Moreover, gut microbiota …

To combat the coronaviruses and their novel variants, therapeutic drugs and the development of vaccines that are to be effective throughout human life are urgently needed. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) acts as a modulator in the activation of the microcirculation, immune system, and autonomic nervous system, along with controlling pharmacological functions such as emotional responses, homeostasis, motor functions, cognition, and motivation. The ECS contains endogenous cannabinoids, cannabinoid receptor (CBRs), and enzymes that regulate their biosynthesis, transport, and degradation. Moreover, phytocannabinoids and synthetic cannabinoids that mimic the action of endocannabinoids also play an essential role in the modulation of the ECS. …

Bangladesh-Bhutan Pta: Less Is More?, Md. Rizwanul Islam
South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business
While in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) years, generally developed economies pursued preferential trade agreements (PTAs), and the states of the global South were also pursuing PTAs between and among each other. The recently concluded Bangladesh-Bhutan Preferential Trade Agreement (BBPTA) is an addition to this list. This article argues that the seemingly narrow scope of the BBPTA is somewhat deceptive. This is so because it covers products which are actually traded between the parties, and they create a substantial margin of preference. Thus, though the relatively liberal and simple rules of origin of the BBPTA is a …
Effects Of Harvest Regulations And Post-Release Hooking Mortality On Walleye Populations In South Dakota, Cade Lyon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Harvest regulations are commonly implemented to manipulate fisheries stocks. By regulating the size and number of fish that are harvested by anglers, managers are able to meet the goals and needs of regions. However, these management actions come with the potential for negative consequences. Overexploitation due to less restrictive harvest regulations can cause collapses in fisheries populations. In addition, indirect consequences such as hooking mortality brought on by length-based regulations can also be detrimental to populations. In this study, I investigated the effects of various harvest regulations on Walleye populations in three western South Dakota irrigation reservoirs: Angostura, Belle Fourche, …

Military Combat Veterans, Sentencing Reform, And Problem-Solving Courts, Andrea Sivanich
Theses and Dissertations
Military veterans involved with the criminal justice system may have unique behavioral health and physical needs, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or traumatic brain injury (TBI), and could benefit from sentence mitigation that emphasizes rehabilitation. This research is related to sentencing reform and how it may support problem-solving court sentencing, as a subset of community-based treatment options within the criminal justice system. This research is important in that it attempts to determine whether the law distinguishes veteran offenders, as a specific population, from other offenders with treatment needs. To do that, this dissertation examines the role of legal texts in …
Legal Marijuana Disperser Owners' Lived Experiences About Accessing Banking Services, Jonathan Travis James
Legal Marijuana Disperser Owners' Lived Experiences About Accessing Banking Services, Jonathan Travis James
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Marijuana reform has created a question of the potential market size of the legal marijuana industry on a local, state, or national level. The problem is that having no banking services has forced legal marijuana dispensaries to be cash-only businesses and created an increased risk of theft. The lack of normal banking services has also affected the ability to manage money earned from operations. This hermeneutic phenomenological study was grounded by the conceptual framework of the motivations of humans and humans' need to feel safe. The participants of this study were owners and operators in the legal marijuana industry of …

This Article evaluates the strategy of claiming personhood for natural objects as a way to advance environmental goals in the United States. Using the Colorado River Ecosystem v. Colorado litigation as the focus, we explore the normative foundation of the claim—elements of nature are legal persons—and the work personhood is being asked to do by the plaintiff and other environmental activists. We identify three possibilities: procedural work, substantive work, and rhetorical work. Of those, we suggest the plaintiff’s strongest case is rhetorical. We say this not only because it will likely be difficult to convince a judge to extend standing …

Effects Of Neuronal Activation And Psychiatric Treatment On Circhomer1 Biogenesis, Grigorios Papageorgiou, Nikolaos Mellios
Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day
Schizophrenia (SCZ) and Bipolar disorder (BD) are heterogeneous psychiatric disorders that together affect more than 3.5% of the US population. Studies using animal, pharmacological models
and post-mortem data, have revealed abnormalities in the dopaminergic and glutamatergic pathways, however, the pathogenesis remains vague. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been shown to play a role in regulating gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level and having implications on brain development and psychiatric diseases. Circular RNAs are a category of ncRNAs, formed after back-splicing of exons/introns, covalently linked, enriched in the mammalian brain and derived from genes that are implicated in synaptic plasticity. …

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day
Our prior work demonstrates that adult prenatal alcohol exposed (PAE) rats with minimal nerve injury develop allodynia (pathological light touch sensitivity) in concert with aberrant peripheral-spinal glial and immune activation. Nerve-injured PAE rats display heightened proinflammatory cytokine production (IL-1β, TNF-α, CCL2) typically produced following activation of innate immune receptors, TLR4 and Nod-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasomes. This suggests that PAE-related adaptations prime peripheral macrophages and central nervous system (CNS) glia to over-respond to subtle challenges through exaggerated TLR4 and NLRP3 inflammasome reactivity. Interestingly, morphine, a standard opioid pain therapeutic, binds the μ-opioid receptor and also glial …

Women lawyers are increasing seen among the leading legal defenders of human rights and social movements in Thailand. Increasing visibility is partly a result of news coverage and social media, but women lawyers activism has far older roots. In this article, we examine two related processes of change that contribute to women’s emergence as leading social cause practitioners. First, we discuss the relationship between Thailand’s legal system and its social and political development since the end of the nineteenth century. Second, we employ career narratives of three women lawyers with innovative practices for social causes as a lens through which …

The Road To Free-Market Family Policy, Maxine Eichner
Faculty Publications
This essay investigates and ultimately rejects the claim that the United States’ comparatively heavily reliance on markets over government to provide the resources that families need is a natural outgrowth of the country’s longstanding veneration of capitalism. In tracing the nation’s economic ideology over time, it demonstrates that, at least until the end of the twentieth century, the constant in US history has not been the expectation of a free-market economy, but rather a commitment to ensuring that the economy, however structured, will enable families to thrive. The dramatic recent shift in economic ideology, when the prevailing commitment to government …

Standing And Contracts, F. Andrew Hessick

In Spokeo v. Robbins, the Supreme Court held that, to establish Article III standing to bring suit in federal court, a plaintiff cannot simply allege the violation of a legal right. Instead, the plaintiff must allege an injury in fact. Although it addressed standing to bring suit for statutory violations, Spokeo raises serious questions about limits on the ability to bring breach of contract actions in federal court. After all, contracts simply create legal rights. Under Spokeo’s logic, the breach of contractual rights should not support standing; instead, standing exists only if the breach results in factual harm. …
