Hepatoprotective Effects Of Treprostinil During Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury, Joyce Hou Jan 2021

Hepatoprotective Effects Of Treprostinil During Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury, Joyce Hou

Open Access Master's Theses

Background: Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) occurs during kidney transplantation and causes acute kidney injury as well as liver injury. Renal IRI depletes hepatic antioxidants and leads to hepatic inflammation, tissue damage and hepatic dysfunction through Tlr9 upregulation. There is no treatment available for liver injury during renal IRI. This study examines the hepatoprotective role of treprostinil, a prostacyclin analog, during renal IRI.

Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: control, sham, IRI-placebo, or IRI-treprostinil and subjected to bilateral ischemia (45 minutes) followed by 1-72 hours of reperfusion. Placebo or treprostinil (100 ng/kg/min) was administered subcutaneously via an …

An In Vitro Investigation Of The Stability And Permeability Of Phytocannabinoids For Skincare Formulations, Toyosi Akanji Jan 2021

An In Vitro Investigation Of The Stability And Permeability Of Phytocannabinoids For Skincare Formulations, Toyosi Akanji

Open Access Master's Theses

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is comprised of ligands, enzymes, and receptors, which are involved in the regulation of various biological functions including cell growth, sensory phenomena, and immune and inflammatory responses. Recent studies have shown that human skin cells contain components of the ECS including cannabinoid receptor 1 and 2 (CB1, CB2) and transient receptor potential channel subfamily V (TRPV1) receptors. The ECS is critical for in maintaining homeostatic conditions and overall skin health, and disruption of ECS may cause pathological disorders including allergic dermatitis, cutaneous itch and pain, and neoplastic cell growth. Published studies also support that cannabinoids from …

Transforming Campus Food Systems Through Agroecology: Pathways To Sustainability And Resilience, Ryleigh Mullens Jan 2021

Transforming Campus Food Systems Through Agroecology: Pathways To Sustainability And Resilience, Ryleigh Mullens

Open Access Master's Theses

Conventional production practices undermine the social, environmental, and economic longevity and sustainability of the U.S. food system. Some postsecondary education institutions (PSEs) have sought to develop alternative, hyper-local food systems through the integration of campus farms into institutional supply chains. These institutions could serve as models for food systems at large; no research has been published on the dynamics and impacts of their efforts at self-provisioning on food system sustainability, resilience, and equity. This research modified existing agroecological resilience frameworks, expanding resilience indicators to include metrics of equity, an often overlooked component of resilience in social-ecological models. The modified framework …

Incorporating Temperature-Dependent Fish Bioenergetics Into A Narragansett Bay Food Web Model, Margaret A. Heinichen Jan 2021

Incorporating Temperature-Dependent Fish Bioenergetics Into A Narragansett Bay Food Web Model, Margaret A. Heinichen

Open Access Master's Theses

Food web models capture shifting species interactions, making them useful tools for exploring community responses to perturbations. The inclusion of environmental drivers, such as temperature, can improve model predictions as energy demands of an organism can be temperature-specific. While Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) and the recent R implementation of this software, Rpath, have included some thermal responses in past work, models have yet to include temperature-dependent energetic demands and metabolic costs. Our work demonstrates the inclusion of temperature-dependent bioenergetics into an Rpath food web model using the case study of a warming estuary: Narragansett Bay (RI, U.S.). Thermal response parameters …

Invisible Chronic Illness In College: Faculty Perspectives And Student Narratives Surrounding Accommodations, Andra Gurley-Green Jan 2021

Invisible Chronic Illness In College: Faculty Perspectives And Student Narratives Surrounding Accommodations, Andra Gurley-Green

Psychology Honors Papers

The objectives of this study were to explore faculty perceptions of accommodations for students with Invisible Chronic Illness (ICI), understand what may influence accommodation perceptions in the case of Chronic Migraine, and gain insight into the experiences of students with ICI. Faculty and students at Connecticut College responded to a hypothetical accommodation letter for a student with Chronic Migraine that varied as follows: standard letter (no illness information), diagnosis, illness education from accessibility office, illness education from student. All participants responded to questions about four approved accommodations (distraction-free testing, extended test time, deadline flexibility, attendance flexibility) asking how “most faculty” …

Collocation-Based Retokenization Methods For Latent Dirichlet Allocation Topic Models, Jin Cheevaprawatdomrong Jan 2021

Collocation-Based Retokenization Methods For Latent Dirichlet Allocation Topic Models, Jin Cheevaprawatdomrong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) discovers hidden themes in documents by using words as input. Past studies show that merging the words into collocation improves topic coherence in English. However, there are still questions about the best merging strategies, especially in the languages without clear word boundaries, such as Thai and Chinese. We compare chi-squared measure, t-statistics, and raw frequency strategies, and show that merging input tokens with appropriate strategies can improve the goodness of fit and topic coherence of the model.

The Hiring Entity’S Usual Course Of Business, Syed M. Q. Ali Khan Jan 2021

The Hiring Entity’S Usual Course Of Business, Syed M. Q. Ali Khan

UC Law Business Journal

The ABC test has increasingly become a tool to differentiate employees from independent contractors. Companies and counsel throughout the nation have grappled with Part B of this test, which requires a determination of the hiring entity’s “usual course of business.” Adjudicators have provided little guidance on how to conduct this analysis and are admittedly frustrated with this “elusive concept.” Yet a thorough treatment of the analytical framework and guiding principles of Part B of the ABC Test has not been put forth.

This article fills this void in scholarship. By tracing the relevant concepts to the common law control test, …

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social and communication deficits, restricted interests (i.e., special interests), and repetitive behaviors. Individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder tend to display difficulties with attention and emotion regulation. Mindfulness meditation has been proven to be an effective in ameliorating several symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder. This project consists of a literature review on Autism Spectrum Disorder and Mindfulness, followed by an original contribution to practice in the form of a “Choose Your Own Adventure” mindfulness intervention. This intervention is designed to incorporate special interests common in Autism Spectrum Disorder into mindfulness meditation …

Utilizing Virtual Reality Therapy In The Treatment Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder In College Counseling Centers, Kaitlyn Barker Jan 2021

Utilizing Virtual Reality Therapy In The Treatment Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder In College Counseling Centers, Kaitlyn Barker

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Anxiety is a leading mental health concern among college students. A growing number of students are presenting with symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which is one of the most common anxiety disorders. As demands for treatment of this disorder increase, counseling centers are also facing limited funding for providing such services. The result is that there is a need to provide more cost effective, and empirically supported approaches to treatment. Therefore, implementing a program that will allow students to utilize already accessible technology to teach themselves how to combat anxiety is merited. Virtual reality therapy (VRT), is one such …

In this class, we wanted to support students’ knowledge of light and the ways in which it interacts with other materials through a series of connected learning experiences. These experiences are related to NGSS standard 1-PS4-3 Waves and Their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer. Plan and conduct investigations to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light. We aimed for children to discover that light tends to move in a straight line unless something gets in the way, materials can affect the beam of light, and the way …

Spring Break Or Heart Break? Extending Valence Bias To Emotional Words, Nicholas R. Harp, Catherine C. Brown, Maital Neta Jan 2021

Spring Break Or Heart Break? Extending Valence Bias To Emotional Words, Nicholas R. Harp, Catherine C. Brown, Maital Neta

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Ambiguous stimuli are useful for assessing emotional bias. For example, surprised faces could convey a positive or negative meaning, and the degree to which an individual interprets these expressions as positive or negative represents their “valence bias.” Currently, the most well- wellvalidated ambiguous stimuli for assessing valence bias include nonverbal signals (faces and scenes), overlooking an inherent ambiguity in verbal signals. This study identified 32 words with dual-valence ambiguity (i.e., relatively high intersubject variability in valence ratings and relatively slow response times) and length-matched clearly valenced words (16 positive, 16 negative). Preregistered analyses demonstrated that the words-based valence bias correlated …

Nontarget Emotional Stimuli Must Be Highly Conspicuous To Modulate The Attentional Blink, Lindsay A. Santacroce, Brandon J. Carlos, Nathan Petro, Benjamin J. Tamber-Rosenau Jan 2021

Nontarget Emotional Stimuli Must Be Highly Conspicuous To Modulate The Attentional Blink, Lindsay A. Santacroce, Brandon J. Carlos, Nathan Petro, Benjamin J. Tamber-Rosenau

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The attentional blink (AB) is often considered a top-down phenomenon because it is triggered by matching an initial target (T1) in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) stream to a search template. However, the AB is modulated when targets are emotional, and is evoked when a task-irrelevant, emotional critical distractor (CDI) replaces T1. Neither manipulation fully captures the interplay between bottom-up and top-down attention in the AB: Valenced targets intrinsically conflate top-down and bottom-up attention. The CDI approach cannotmanipulate second target (T2) valence, which is critical because valenced T2s can “break through” the AB (in the target-manipulation approach). The present …

, The American Constitution In The Cycle Of Kali Yuga: Eastern Philosophy Greets Western Democracy, Shiv Narayan Persaud

Journal Publications

This paper will explore the above-mentioned questions while taking into consideration the intent and overarching tenets of the Constitution in relation to the precepts of Kali Yuga. The hope is to generate discourse on some of the trappings of the Constitution and constitutional democracy in an ever changing and increasingly diverse and segmented society-a nation with a multiplicity of cultures with distinctive beliefs and moral systems. Emphatically stated, the intent is not to examine every article or amendment of the Constitution; this would be presumptuous. The intent is to foster an examination of the Constitution as the overall architectural framework …

Learning From Covid-19: Universal Design For Learning Implementation Prior To And During A Pandemic, Jennifer Renée Kilpatrick, Suzanne Ehrlich, Michelle Bartlett

UNF Faculty Research and Scholarship

This study examined whether higher education faculty knowingly and/or unknowingly applied UDL principles prior to and during the COVID-19 rapid online teaching and learning (ROTL) transition. Researchers collected data through a survey that was disseminated nationwide and completed by higher education faculty (n = 38). Findings included a shift in instruction modality where 50 percent of synchronous in person instruction moved to asynchronous online instruction or optional synchronous remote instruction. Additionally, there was an unsurprising, considerable increase in the use of technology to support student engagement with course content. Researchers identified themes in the barriers (e.g., time, resources, training) to …

True Knowledge Of God Obscured In Mind And Body: Hildegard Of Bingen’S Medical And Religious Understanding Of Adam’S Fall, Minji Lee Jan 2021

True Knowledge Of God Obscured In Mind And Body: Hildegard Of Bingen’S Medical And Religious Understanding Of Adam’S Fall, Minji Lee

Department of Religion Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

According to Hildegard of Bingen, Cause et Cure or “Causes and Cures” in English, Adam saw God’s full prophesy for the structure of the world and the last day of the world that eventually the humankind will restore the secret knowledge given by God and they will come back to God. Here, the woman’s body works essential as it is not polluted by the first sin and it can save the humankind as the Virgin Mary gave birth to the Christ. The woman’s body became the important tool to restore the hidden knowledge of God as the body could remember …

Department of Religion Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a German Benedictine nun, specialized in theology, medicine, and other various fields. Her Cause et cure, "Cause and cure" in English, is one of her many writings that show Hildegard's unique understanding of the human body and soul. Especially this medicinal book presents an unusually favorable understanding of the woman's reproductive body as something healing and creative, which contrasts the polluting and dangerous nature commonly attributed to the woman's body according to the most medieval male theologians and physicians. For Hildegard, conception, pregnancy, and childbirth are the holy repetition of God's Creation. Moreover, these reproductive …

The Effects Of Sea Turtle And Other Marine Megafauna Consumption In Northeastern Madagascar, Emily Rothamel, Be Jean Rodolph Rasolofoniaina, Cortni Borgerson Jan 2021

The Effects Of Sea Turtle And Other Marine Megafauna Consumption In Northeastern Madagascar, Emily Rothamel, Be Jean Rodolph Rasolofoniaina, Cortni Borgerson

Department of Anthropology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Sea turtles are essential to the health of marine ecosystems, yet nearly 90% are threatened with extinction. The unsustainable consumption of sea turtles contributes to their global decline. Because sea turtle meat is also high in heavy metals, the monitoring of sea turtle consumption is a priority for both marine conservation and public health. Despite this, sea turtle consumption was understudied along Madagascar’s eastern coastline. We used structured interviews (collected over nine years) in northeastern Madagascar to study the rural consumption of sea turtles and other marine megafauna (including dolphins, whales, and dugongs). Sea turtle consumption is increasing in the …

The Trouble With Numbers: Difficult Decision Making In Identifying Right-Wing Terrorism Cases. An Investigative Look At Open Source Social Scientific And Legal Data, Daniela Peterka-Benton, Francesca Laguardia Jan 2021

The Trouble With Numbers: Difficult Decision Making In Identifying Right-Wing Terrorism Cases. An Investigative Look At Open Source Social Scientific And Legal Data, Daniela Peterka-Benton, Francesca Laguardia

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Terrorism research has gained much traction since the 9/11 attacks, but some sub genres of terrorism, such as right-wing terrorism, have remained under-studied areas. Unsurprisingly data sources to study these phenomena are scarce and frequently face unique data collection obstacles. This paper explores five major, social-scientific terrorism databases in regards to data on right-wing terrorist events. The paper also provides an in-depth examination of the utilization of criminal legal proceedings to research right-wing terrorist acts. Lastly, legal case databases are introduced and discussed to show the lack of available court information and case proceedings in regards to right-wing terrorism.

Memory Activism And Mexico’S War On Drugs: Countermonuments, Resistance, And The Politics Of Time, Alexandra Délano Alonso, Benjamin Nienass

Department of Political Science and Law Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The widespread violence in Mexico by state and nonstate actors since the government launched a military strategy against drug cartels in 2006 has generated demands for justice, including spaces of mourning and commemoration that recognize hundreds of thousands of Mexican nationals and migrants from other countries who have been killed or disappeared. Creating memorial spaces for ongoing forms of violence whose perpetrators and victims are hard to define has proven difficult from a bureaucratic, political, and aesthetic perspective. This article examines and contrasts three commemorative and transformative memorial interventions to show that in a context that lacks a clear transition …

Dickens’S Changing Perspective Towards Capitalism And The Bourgeoisie, Christina Oliveira Jan 2021

Dickens’S Changing Perspective Towards Capitalism And The Bourgeoisie, Christina Oliveira

Honors Program Theses

Most scholars agree that author and social activist Charles Dickens (1812-1870) made keen observations on human behavior and societal problems through his works. However, scholars are divided over whether to categorize Dickens and his work as radically reformist or pro-bourgeoisie. Through an analysis of three of Dickens’s texts, A Christmas Carol (1843), Bleak House (1852), and Great Expectations (1861), this thesis demonstrates that Dickens’s works carry contradictory ideologies. As time passes, Dickens becomes disillusioned with capitalism but continues to promote capitalist and bourgeois values and ideologies. The trajectory of Dickens’s views shows the difficulties in imagining different realities outside of …
