In 1969, members of Grupo Espeleológico Edelweiss discovered the Sala and Galerías de las Huellas in Ojo Guareña Cave system (Burgos, Spain). These contained hundreds of ancient human footprints, preserved in the soft sediment on the floor. These footprints represent the tracks of a small group of people who walked barefoot through these complex passages in the cave. Owing to the difficult compatibility of the documentation and preservation of these prints, it was not possible to study them before the development of new non-invasive remote sensing techniques. However, since 2012 optical laser scanning and digital photogrammetry have been used in …

The chapter summarizes the new results of the Bàsura Revisited Interdisciplinary Research Project. The integrated interpretation of recent archaeological data and palaeosurface laser scans, along with geoarchaeological, sedimentological, geochemical and archaeobotanical analyses, geometric morphometrics and digital photogrammetry, enabled us to reconstruct some activities that an Upper Palaeolithic human group led inside a deep cave in northern Italy within a single exploration event about 14 ka calBP. A complex and diverse track records of humans and other animals shed light on individual- and group-level behaviour, social relationship and mode of exploration of the uneven terrain. Five individuals, composed of two adults, …
Removal Of Heavy Metals From Water Using Natural Bauxite, Hashindra Kumari Herath
Removal Of Heavy Metals From Water Using Natural Bauxite, Hashindra Kumari Herath
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bauxite, the principal ore of aluminum is a potential low-cost sorbent to treat heavy metal-contaminated water. This work studied the ability of raw bauxite to adsorb Pb2+, Cu2+ , Ni2+, and Co2+ ions in natural waters and the dependency of the sorption efficiency on the initial metal ion concentration in water, contact time, the ‘type’ of bauxite, and the effect of coexisting metals. Goethite-rich (B1) and kaolinite-rich (B2) bauxites were sampled in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Single element and multi-element (ME) solutions were prepared by introducing the metals at concentrations of 10, 100, and 500 ppb in lake water. The solutions …
Responses Of Predatory Myxobacteria To Prey Signaling Molecules & Features Of A Pseudomonas Prey Avoiding Predation, Shukria Akbar
Responses Of Predatory Myxobacteria To Prey Signaling Molecules & Features Of A Pseudomonas Prey Avoiding Predation, Shukria Akbar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gram-negative unicellular myxobacteria, along with their multicellular lifestyle andbiologically active specialized metabolites, are known for the predatory interactions with Gram-negative/ Gram-positive bacteria and fungi. Although myxobacterial predation range have been exploited extensively, little is known about the prey associated molecules contributing to myxobacterial predator-prey dynamics. By employing transcriptomics and untargeted metabolomics approaches, we demonstrate two structurally distinct classes of signaling molecules from Gram-negative bacterial prey elicit significant omics responses from myxobacteria, Myxococcus xanthus and Cystobacter ferrugineus. An overlapping and general response to acylhomoserine lactones, whereas a distinctive response to a quinolone signaling molecule is observed from both myxobacteria. Similarly, by …
Quantifying Microbial Resistance To Nematode Predation, Tyler Bacon
Quantifying Microbial Resistance To Nematode Predation, Tyler Bacon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The selection pressure of predation has encouraged the development of defense traits that can make an individual species more environmentally stable. In addition to biotic pressures, abiotic factors could lead to disruption of predator-prey balance within ecosystems. Consequently, it is significant to better understand how environmental factors can influence predator-prey interactions and how responses may, in turn, affect communities. A current challenge within microbial communities is to understand which intraspecific traits associated with such defense strategies are important for microbial-prey responses to predation, and how the responses vary across environments revealing GxE interactions. In this study, I examined microbial-predator prey …

“[T]Hat Monstrous Machine Of His” : The Machine Metaphor In John Cleland’S Memoir Of A Woman Of Pleasure, Choedphong Uttama
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
John Cleland’s Memoir of a Woman of Pleasure (1748–49), commonly known as Fanny Hill, is regarded as the first pornographic novel in English literature. Its description of sexual activities is explicit but its language is not coarse. It employs a wide range of metaphors to refer to both sexual acts and genitalia and the metaphor used most frequently to refer to the penis is “the machine.” The machine metaphor will be the focus of this paper, which aims to argue that the machine metaphor carries two meanings. The first is the machine as one of military metaphors common in …
Against Hostile Nature : The Roles Of Magic And Science In Thailand’S Cave Rescue, Kanya Wattanagun
Against Hostile Nature : The Roles Of Magic And Science In Thailand’S Cave Rescue, Kanya Wattanagun
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The rescue mission at Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai, Thailand, presents a scenario in which magical rituals and technical knowledge were marshaled against hostile natural conditions. While practical endeavors were made to mitigate the risks and impediments posed by malign weather and topographical features of the cave, myths and rituals were enacted to control unruly factors not subject to human manipulation. In this paper, I argue that: 1) Magical rituals at Tham Luang cave did not originate from the participants’ confidence in the reality of supernatural beings but from their attempt to use alternative approaches to remedy a precarious …
Unmaking Masculine Determinacy : A Postmodern Challenge In Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Usa Padgate
Unmaking Masculine Determinacy : A Postmodern Challenge In Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Usa Padgate
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Venus, a play written by Suzan-Lori Parks, employs unconventional theatrical approaches in retelling the history of a 19th-century freak show attraction. This study examines how the critique of gender bias and sexual manipulations in Venus is explored and projected in ways that can be described as postmodern. Through the subversion of conventional forms and language, the blending of fact and fiction, the pastiches of both low and high generic and linguistic presentations, the liberating of a marginalized voice, and the revision of the philosophical premises that subordinate the female to the male order, the play questions the masculine determinacy …
Agency, Responsibility, And Actor Positioning In Courtroom Narratives, Krisda Chaemsaithong
Agency, Responsibility, And Actor Positioning In Courtroom Narratives, Krisda Chaemsaithong
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Viewing language as a system consisting of grammatical resources for meaning making, this study explores how agency and responsibility are attributed in legal narratives through the lens of transitivity. Drawing upon the opening address of three American trials, the quantitative and qualitative findings indicate that agency and blameworthiness of the individuals on trial are discursively negotiated through starkly different grammatical choices, so that polarized positionings of the same social actors and events are accomplished for the audience. It is argued that such manipulation of grammatical resources exhibits subjective intervention on the part of the presenter and constitutes a prime mechanism …

The VESPACE project aims to revive an evening of theatre at the Foire Saint-Germain in Paris in the 18th century, by recreating spaces, atmospheres and theatrical entertainment in virtual reality. The venues of this fair have disappeared without leaving any archaeological traces, so their digital reconstruction requires fusing many different sources, including the expertise of historians, as well as of historians of theatre and literature. In this article, we present how we have used video game creation tools to enable the use of virtual reality in three key research stages in the human sciences, and particularly, in history or archaeology: …

Comparative Study Of Agrogeophysical Methods For Identifying Soil Pipes, Md Abdus Abdus Samad
Comparative Study Of Agrogeophysical Methods For Identifying Soil Pipes, Md Abdus Abdus Samad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Soil erosion is considered the greatest challenge for soil management and agri-food production threatening human habitat and livelihood. Although soil erosion due to surficial processes has been well studied, the role of the subsurface process such as internal soil pipes has often been overlooked. Internal soil pipes directly contribute to total soil loss in agricultural fields that severely threaten agricultural sustainability. Locating, measuring, and mapping internal soil pipes and their networks are vital to assess the total soil loss in agricultural fields. Internal soil pipes are not commonly visible at the surface, and their subsurface networks rarely follow the surface …

Development Of An Ophthalmic Nanoemulsion Containing Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol-Valine-Hemisuccinate (Thc-Vhs; Nb1111) For Management Of Glaucoma, Corinne Varner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol-Valine-Hemisuccinate (THC-VHS; NB1111) has recently been investigated in the management of intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering activity. The current studies were undertaken to develop a THC-VHS loaded nanoemulsion (NE; THC-VHS-NE) with and without Carbopol® 940 as mucoadhesive agent (NEC; THC-VHS-NEC) that could increase the drug load and the duration of activity. The physical and chemical stability and sterilization of the lead formulation THC-VHS-NE and THC-VHS-NEC were observed under refrigerated conditions (4°C) for sixty days. Further, the pharmacodynamic (PD) effect of the lead formulations were studied in normotensive Albino New Zealand White (NZW) male rabbits following …

Formulation Development, Characterization, And Optimization Of Antimalarial And Antibiotic Drugs, Kai-Wei Wu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Primaquine (PQ)-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), and nano-emulsion (NE) were developed to investigate the influence of lipid excipients, surfactants, and drug loading on the physicochemical properties of lipid formulations. To investigate the drug release mechanisms from the lipid-based formulations, empirical release kinetic models such as zero-order, Higuchi, Korsmeyer-Peppas, and Hixson-Crowell were used. In an ex vivo hemolysis toxicity study, the efficacy of SLN, NLC, and NE to protect erythrocytes against PQ-induced cell lysis was investigated. The results show that all lipid formulations reduced the erythrocyte hemolysis by approximately 4.5-fold compared to the drug solution, suggesting that …
Four Futures For U.S. Pandemic Policy, Daniel J. Hemel
Four Futures For U.S. Pandemic Policy, Daniel J. Hemel
Faculty Articles
The COVID-19 pandemic is probably not the last time that a new and deadly infectious disease will sweep the planet. What can the United States do to improve its chances of averting large-scale loss of life the next time? This essay—prepared for The University of Chicago Legal Forum’s symposium issue on “Law for the Next Pandemic”—envisions four “futures” for the United States’ pandemic response and considers the advantages and drawbacks of each. One approach, the Mass Surveillance strategy, relies on widespread population monitoring, rigorous contact tracing, and enforced isolation of the infected. That strategy has enabled several East and Southeast …
The Incoherence Of Prison Law, Justin Driver, Emma Kaufman
The Incoherence Of Prison Law, Justin Driver, Emma Kaufman
Faculty Articles
In recent years, legal scholars have advanced powerful critiques of mass incarceration. Academics have indicted America’s prison system for entrenching racism and exacerbating economic inequality. Scholars have said much less about the law that governs penal institutions. Yet prisons are filled with law, and prison doctrine is in a state of disarray. This Article centers prison law in debates about the failures of American criminal justice. Bringing together disparate lines of doctrine, prison memoirs, and historical sources, we trace prison law’s emergence as a discrete field — a subspeciality of constitutional law and a neglected part of the discipline called …

Amidst a raft of major Supreme Court decisions, a relatively quiet concurrence has planted the seeds for what may precipitate a major transformation in American constitutional law. Writing for himself in Box v. Planned Parenthood, Justice Thomas chided the Court for declining to review a decision invalidating an Indiana law that prohibited abortions undertaken “solely because of the child’s race, sex, diagnosis of Down syndrome, disability, or related characteristics.” Arguing that the challenged law was merely Indiana’s modest attempt to prevent “abortion from becoming a tool of modern-day eugenics,” Justice Thomas proceeded to elaborate a misleading history in which he …
Taxing Buybacks, Daniel J. Hemel, Gregg Polsky
Taxing Buybacks, Daniel J. Hemel, Gregg Polsky
Faculty Articles
A recent rise in the volume of corporate share repurchases has prompted calls for changes to the rules governing stock buybacks. These calls for reform are animated by concerns that buybacks enrich corporate executives at the expense of productive investment. This emerging antibuyback movement includes prominent politicians as well as academics and Republicans as well as Democrats. The primary focus of buyback critics has been on securities-law changes to deter repurchases, with only passing mention of potential tax-law solutions. This Article critically examines the policy arguments against buybacks and arrives at a mixed verdict. On the one hand, claims that …

Influence Of Rage Signaling On Cellular Communication In Diabetes-Mediated Vascular Calcification, Amber Michelle Kennon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chronic hyperglycemia is one of the main characteristics of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). With the increased prevalence of T2DM, the risk of cardiovascular complications, including heart attack or stroke, is increased. Complications linked to the vasculature are increased vascular calcification (VC) or mineral deposition within the medial layer of conducting arteries. Under calcification conditions, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) undergo an osteogenic switch to an osteoblast-like cell and begin producing bone proteins. Chronic hyperglycemia can also result in increased extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis, accumulation, and crosslinking. One of the cell types responsible for increased ECM synthesis are ‘activated’ fibroblasts …

Describing The Gut Microbiome Of Amblema Plicata, Lauren Lawson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Freshwater mussels are important for nutrient cycling and ecosystem health, as they filter feed on their surrounding water column. This form of feeding makes these bivalves especially sensitive to conditions in their environment. Gut microbial communities (microbiomes) have been recognized as important to both host organism and ecosystem health; however, how microbiomes are organized and influenced is still unclear. In this study, the gut microbiomes of 58 individuals of the freshwater mussel Amblema plicata were compared across two river basins, five rivers, and nine sites in the southeastern USA. Planctomycetes, Firmicutes, and Cyanobacteria were the most common phyla within all …

Childhood sexual assault (CSA) is a growing problem in our society. A child who experiences a sexual assault not only deals with the immediate trauma surrounding this event, but also the aftermath of this event as they progress into adulthood. Trauma and sexual trauma is an umbrella term that incorporates all of the various implications of experiencing a negative event. In the instance of trauma, neurobiological implications have been well researched and established. This knowledge highlights the need for counseling techniques to be developed and studied that target those who have experienced CSA. The aim of this single-case research design …
Enzyme-Initiated Admicellar Polymerization, Elaheh Shakeri
Enzyme-Initiated Admicellar Polymerization, Elaheh Shakeri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Admicellar polymerization was developed in the 1980s as an economical method for modifying various surfaces. In admicellar polymerization, a low monomer to initiator (M/I) ratio was traditionally required to overcome this limitation and achieve high polymer conversion when oxygen was present in the headspace and dissolved in the reaction medium. To develop an environmentally friendly, cost-efficient, and feasible deoxygenation and initiation technique, we studied the use of glucose oxidase (GOx) in admicellar polymerization. In this method, GOx acts as the catalyst in the oxidation of ?-D-glucose, while consuming oxygen and generating hydrogen peroxide and D-glucono-?-lactone. There are many advantages of …
Blood Money: 12th Century Trade Wars And The Fourth Crusade, Alexander Evgeniy Stalowski
Blood Money: 12th Century Trade Wars And The Fourth Crusade, Alexander Evgeniy Stalowski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The historiography of the Fourth Crusade has neglected long-term macroeconomic developments and its influence on the Fourth Crusade within the Byzantine Empire and the Italian states of Venice, Pisa, and Genoa. It is well-established that the Venetians rerouted the crusading forces to Constantinople which caused political, religious, and economic challenges that altered the Mediterranean world. Yet, the trend of writing on political events and short-term microeconomics and macroeconomics from 1180 to 1204, has done great disservice to the larger trans-regional disputes that engulfed the Mediterranean during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. This thesis will attempt to fill the void of …

The Current Treatment Of English Phrasal Verbs In Mext-Authorized Textbooks For Japanese Junior High School Students, Natsuko Yamada
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This comparative analysis, focusing on the 150 highest-frequency phrasal verbs in the phrasal verb pedagogical list (Garnier and Schmitt, 2015), highlights the limited occurrence across English language textbooks for Japanese junior high school. The spoken and written data of Japanese learners of English (i.e., NICT-JLE and NICE) shows considerable differences in the usage patterns of phrasal verbs compared to native English speakers. These results indicated that Japanese learners’ underdeveloped productive knowledge of phrasal verbs could cause intelligibility problems with native speakers especially in oral communication. In order to overcome the semantic and phonological complexity of phrasal verbs, and to break …
