Adaptable Design: Building Multi-Modal Content For Flexible Law School Teaching, Agnieszka Mcpeak
Adaptable Design: Building Multi-Modal Content For Flexible Law School Teaching, Agnieszka Mcpeak
Saint Louis University Law Journal
This essay discusses ways to build course content that can easily toggle between face-to-face and online modes of instruction. It is meant as a quick, practical guide for law professors faced with challenging teaching circumstances due to COVID-19 and campus closures, but with long-term applicability as law schools continue to expand online and hybrid course offerings. This idea for “adaptable design” is based largely on my own experience moving face-to-face courses online. I try to avoid delving too much into technical definitions and pedagogical theory, instead focusing on personal experience and examples. Although COVID-19 has created an immediate need for …

Legal Education In A Pandemic: A Crisis And Online Teaching Reveal Who My Students Are, Sonia M. Suter
Saint Louis University Law Journal
The COVID-19 pandemic upended things for everyone across the world in so many ways, including at universities and law schools. In switching to online teaching in the mid-semester last spring and continuing to teach first-year law students online this past fall, I have witnessed the strength and compassion of my students even in the face of the challenges of the pandemic, online learning, and political unease in our country. I have been heartened and bolstered by their deep commitment to building community with one another.

When our home institution moved all instruction online in response to the pandemic, we began redesigning our business law survey course from scratch. Specifically, we decided to use the popular docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness to explore the legal and ethical environments of business with our undergraduate students. We deliberately chose this surprise-hit television show in order to make our online course as relevant, timely, and engaging as possible. The remainder of the paper will describe the contents of each module of the course, explore their relation to Tiger King, and explain the logic of our …
Teaching Law Online: Yesterday And Today, But Tomorrow Never Knows, Ira Steven Nathenson
Teaching Law Online: Yesterday And Today, But Tomorrow Never Knows, Ira Steven Nathenson
Saint Louis University Law Journal
Although the role of “online” in legal education has grown over the past several decades, online teaching became a lifeline in Spring 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered classrooms nationwide. Online teaching is now necessary, but also problematic. Schools and teachers therefore need to carefully consider how to make effective use of online tools and techniques. This essay reflects on the author’s career-long experiences in online law teaching, much of which predates the COVID-19 pandemic. “With a little help” from a Beatles song or two, the essay reflects the yesterday, today, and tomorrow of online legal education. It closes with …

Biopolitics' New Iteration: Gay Men, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis And The Pharmaco-Pornographic Imagination, Rory David Crath, J. Cristian Rangel, Adam Gaubinger
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
This article builds upon Paul Preciado’s conceptualisation of pharmaco-pornographic power to understand the ongoing affects and effects of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) on queer men’s sexual socialities and subjectivities. Drawing from a new-materialist epistemology, we analyze data from a sexual health pilot study in NYC to trace the techno-sexual health assemblages forming in queer life worlds. Our analysis suggests that these assemblages, entangling PrEP and other pharmacological substances, pornographic imaginaries together with mediatic technologies and public health rationalties, are creating paradoxical desires and practices of intimacy that are both normative and exceed rational health-actor logics and normative understandings of risk. These …

How To End Our Stories: A Study Of The Perspectives Of Seniors On Dementia And Decision-Making, James Toomey
How To End Our Stories: A Study Of The Perspectives Of Seniors On Dementia And Decision-Making, James Toomey
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Because dementia can cause individuals to make decisions that they otherwise would not, the law needs a mechanism to determine which decisions are entitled to the respect of the legal system and which may be overridden by others. In the philosophical literature, three primary theories for how to make this determination have been offered. First, "Cognitivism" posits that whether a decision should be recognized is a function of the mechanical functioning of the individual's brain at the time the decision is made. Second, "Essentialism" holds that decisions should be recognized so long as they are consistent with the cluster of …

Processes involved in applying textile dyes are some of the most toxic, energy consuming processes involved in the production of fashion textiles. This research aims to identify, evaluate, and compare various alternative methods of applying and adhering dyes to textiles that are less pollutant in nature, consume fewer natural resources, are cost-efficient for the industry, and are viable for reproduction and application on an industrial scale. Literature discussing and reviewing sustainable dye application methods …
In The Eyes Of The Beholder: Rapid Body Color Change Provides Facultative Crypsis In A Lizard, Kelly Wuthrich, Amber Morgan
In The Eyes Of The Beholder: Rapid Body Color Change Provides Facultative Crypsis In A Lizard, Kelly Wuthrich, Amber Morgan
Research Days Posters 2021
Camouflage is an important component of antipredator behaviors. In many species, rapid color change provides plasticity in camouflage as animals move through their environments. As rapid color change can also play a role in other aspects of behavior such as territory defense and courtship, an experimental approach is required to determine color change’s function. In the Anolis genus, rapid color change is a signal in social interactions, but why color changes as anoles move through different microhabitats is not well explored. Anolis aquaticus has a rapid dark-to-light color change with an unknown function. We tested the hypothesis that A. aquaticus …

Investigating The Development Of The Hemp Processing Industry In New York State, John Mather
Research Days Posters 2021
Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) has emerged as an environmentally beneficial renewable resource due to its short growing cycle, carbon sequestration properties, and the medical applications of cannabidiol (CBD). All parts of the hemp plant can be used to produce products that are eco-friendly. New York State (NYS) has recently legalized production of hemp. Many farmers have obtained permits to grow hemp, but there has been a lack of hemp processors within the state who can turn raw hemp into hemp products. This research focuses on the lack of processing within the hemp market in NYS in order to develop a …

Research Days Posters 2021
Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a debilitating, neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms, including bradykinesia, tremor, stiffness, and postural instability, that result from significant nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) loss. The current gold standard treatment for PD involves replacement therapy via the DA precursor L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA); however, 90% of patients eventually experience choreic and dystonic side effects termed L-DOPA induced dyskinesia (LID). A key driver of LID is neuroplasticity within the serotonin (5-HT) system leading to the unregulated release of L-DOPA derived DA from 5-HT terminals into the striatum. Previous work has implicated the dual action of 5-HT1A receptor agonism and 5-HT transporter …
Assessment Of Oxytocin-Receptor Modulation Of Social Recognition Following Adolescent Ethanol Exposure, Matthew Goyden
Assessment Of Oxytocin-Receptor Modulation Of Social Recognition Following Adolescent Ethanol Exposure, Matthew Goyden
Research Days Posters 2021
Adolescent alcohol consumption is prevalent in the United States. Studies report that adolescents ages 12 to 20 consume alcohol at and exceed binge levels, which is defined as 4 drinks for women and 5 for men over two hours. Rodent-model studies considering adolescent intermittent alcohol (ethanol) exposure (AIE) have shown that consumption results in long-term deficits in memory, cognition, social and nonsocial anxiety, and other behaviors into adulthood in part due to the vulnerability of late-developing brain regions such as the frontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. Recent developments have indicated that oxytocin receptor activity is diminished following AIE and that …

The Role Of Apparent Competition In Facilitating Ecological Release Of A Range-Expanding Insect, Serena Feldman, Rachel Chen, Aly Milks, Dylan Jones, Leslie Huang, Jenna Ross, Lilly Griffen, Will Smisko
Research Days Posters 2021
Due to anthropogenic climate change, species are expanding their historical natural ranges. However, interacting species will not shift synchronously and range-expanding species are likely to lose interactions and pick up novel ones in their expanded range. If antagonistic interactions, such as with competitors or enemies are lost, range-expanding species may experience “ecological release” and have impacts in their expanded range. Of the parasitoid wasps that attack phytophagous insects, some are specialists and some are generalists attacking alternative hosts (competitors). Range-expanding species may lose enemies if their specialists fail to follow from their native range and if generalist enemies fail to …

Inferring The “Meaning” Of Wing-Tail Flicking Behavior In American Crows, Avree Kestay, Aardash Devkota
Research Days Posters 2021
Wing and tail flicking is observed in many bird species, but the interpretation of this behavior ranges from signaling aggression to reflecting fear. In American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos), wing-tail flicking (WTF) may reflect unease and may even be a signal to other birds. We report the first quantitative analysis of wing-tail flicking by crows with respect to its use by context and identity of the crow. We analyzed pre-recorded videos from other experiments exposing crows to novel objects, both on territory and at a group foraging site. WTF was recorded quantitatively (scale of intensity 1-3 and rates/min), along with context …
