INTRODUCTION: Women comprise two-thirds of people with dementia, making female sex a significant dementia risk factor. Both type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are known dementia risk factors with an increasing global incidence. Understanding whether subtle sex differences persist in cognitive function prior to dementia in the context of diabetes may help elucidate the magnitude of sex effects on dementia risk.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We examined cross-sectional data from the Study of Longevity in Diabetes (SOLID), a prospective cohort study of members of Kaiser Permanente Northern California aged 60 years and older with T1D (n=758), T2D …

Purification And Characterization Of Metmyoglobin Reductase In Beef Longissimus Muscle, Zhao Li-Jun, Zhao Ke, Zhao Gai-Ming, Ma Yang-Yang, Zhu Yao-Di, Li Miao-Yun, Huang Ming-Yuan
Food and Machinery
The longissimus muscle from chilled beef was used as raw material to preliminary study the purification and characteristics of metmyoglobin reductase. The effect of temperature, pH and metal ions on the metmyoglobin reductase activity was investigated. Results revealed that the metmyoglobin reductase of longissimus muscle could be crudely purified with ammonium sulfate (65% saturation) and ultrafiltration (>50 kDa). SDS-PAGE analysis showed that the molecular weight of the metmyoglobin reductase of longissimus muscle was 29.0~66.4 kDa, mainly. The proper temperature of the metmyoglobin reductase of longissimus muscle was 40 ℃, with the proper pH 6.0. Cu2+ could inhibit the …

Effectiveness Of Visual Prompts On Correct Disposal Of Trash And Recyclable Materials, Ronni Hemstreet
Thesis Projects
Recycling is an important and socially significant behavior for which behavior analytic interventions could be greatly beneficial. In the present study, the effectiveness of various visual prompts on increasing correct disposal of trash and recycling items was evaluated with four graduate students. Three visual prompts of varying complexity were compared in an alternating treatments design. The results indicated that visual prompts are an effective way to increase correct disposal of recycling and trash items. However, the results did not show differentiation between the visual prompts for three of the four participants.

Purpose: Exposure to space radiation may place astronauts at significant health risks. This is an under-investigated area of research and therefore more knowledge is needed to better plan long-term space missions. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of radiation on murine naïve and activated T lymphocytes (T cells) and to test the effectiveness of thermal, radiation and flight tracking technology in biological scientific payloads. We cultured cells in specific cytokines known to increase their viability and exposed them to either flight or had them as ground controls. Flight cells were kept under proper environmental conditions by …

Acetaminophen (N-acetyl p-aminophenol or APAP) is used worldwide for its antipyretic and anti-inflammatory potential. However, APAP overdose sometimes causes severe liver damage. In this study, we elucidated the protective effects of carveol in liver injury, using molecular and in silico approaches. Male BALB/c mice were divided into two experimental cohorts, to identify the best dose and to further assess the role of carveol in the nuclear factor E2-related factor; nuclear factor erythroid 2; p45-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway. The results demonstrated that carveol significantly modulated the detrimental effects of APAP by boosting endogenous antioxidant mechanisms, such as nuclear translocation of …

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes clinically important diseases in immune compromised and immune immature individuals. Based largely on work in the mouse model of murine (M)CMV, there is a consensus that myeloid cells are important for disseminating CMV from the site of infection. In theory, such dissemination should expose CMV to cell-mediated immunity and thus necessitate evasion of T cells and NK cells. However, this hypothesis remains untested. We constructed a recombinant MCMV encoding target sites for the hematopoietic specific miRNA miR-142-3p in the essential viral gene IE3. This virus disseminated poorly to the salivary gland following intranasal or footpad infections but …
Religious Exemptions As Rational Social Policy, Justin W. Aimonetti, M. Christian Talley
Religious Exemptions As Rational Social Policy, Justin W. Aimonetti, M. Christian Talley
University of Richmond Law Review
In its 1963 decision Sherbert v. Verner, the Supreme Court interpreted the Free Exercise Clause to permit religious exemptions from general laws that incidentally burdened religious practice. Sherbert, in theory, provided stringent protections for religious freedom. But those protections came at a price. Religious adherents could secure exemptions even if they had no evidence the laws they challenged unfairly targeted their religious conduct. And they could thereby undermine the policy objectives those laws sought to achieve. Because of such policy concerns, the Court progressively restricted the availability of religious exemptions. In its 1990 decision Employment Division v. Smith …

Traumatic brain injury-induced coagulopathy (TBI-IC) causes life-threatening secondary intracranial bleeding. Its pathogenesis differs mechanistically from that of coagulopathy arising from extracranial injuries and hemorrhagic shock, but it remains poorly understood. We report results of a study designed to test the hypothesis that von Willebrand factor (VWF) released during acute TBI is intrinsically hyperadhesive because its platelet-binding A1-domain is exposed and contributes to TBI-induced vascular leakage and consumptive coagulopathy. This hyperadhesive VWF can be selectively blocked by a VWF A2-domain protein to prevent TBI-IC and to improve neurological function with a minimal risk of bleeding. We demonstrated that A2 given through …

Agammaglobulinemia is the most profound primary antibody deficiency that can occur due to an early termination of B-cell development. We here investigated 3 novel patients, including the first known adult, from unrelated families with agammaglobulinemia, recurrent infections, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Two of them also presented with intermittent or severe chronic neutropenia. We identified homozygous or compound-heterozygous variants in the gene for folliculin interacting protein 1 (FNIP1), leading to loss of the FNIP1 protein. B-cell metabolism, including mitochondrial numbers and activity and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/AKT pathway, was impaired. These defects recapitulated the Fnip1-/- animal model. Moreover, we identified either uniparental disomy …

In Silicoidentification Of Toxins And Their Effect Onhost Pathways: Feature Extraction, Classificationand Pathway Prediction., Rishika Sen Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Identification of toxins, which are either proteins or small molecules, from pathogens is of paramount importance due to their crucial role as first-line invaders infiltrating a host, often leading to infection of the host. These toxins can affect specific proteins, like enzymes that catalyze metabolic pathways, affect metabolites that form the basis of metabolic reactions, and prevent the progression of those pathways, or more generally they may affect the regular functioning of other proteins in signaling pathways in the host. In this regard, the thesis addresses the problem of identification of toxins, and the effect of perturbations by toxins on …

Plant hormones are small regulatory molecules that exert pharmacological actions in mammalian cells such as anti-oxidative and pro-metabolic effects. Kinetin belongs to the group of plant hormones cytokinin and has been associated with modulatory functions in mammalian cells. The mammalian adenosine receptor (A2a-R) is known to modulate multiple physiological responses in animal cells. Here, we describe that kinetin binds to the adenosine receptor (A2a-R) through the Asn253 residue in an adenosine dependent manner. To harness the beneficial effects of kinetin for future human use, we assess its acute toxicity by analyzing different biochemical and histological markers in rats. Kinetin at …

Mathematical Zendo: A Game Of Patterns And Logic, Philip Deorsey, Corey Pooler, Michael Ferrara
Journal of Math Circles
Mathematical Zendo is a logic game that actively engages participants in pattern recognition, problem solving, and critical thinking while providing a fun opportunity to explore all manner of mathematical objects. Based upon the popular game of Zendo, created by Looney Labs, Mathematical Zendo centers on a secret rule, chosen by the leader, that must be guessed by teams of players. In each round of the game, teams provide examples of the mathematical object of interest (e.g. functions, numbers, sets) and receive information about whether their guesses do or do not satisfy the secret rule. In this paper, we introduce Mathematical …
The Extent To Which Animals Have Intellectual Rights, Dr. Heidi Issa Hassan
The Extent To Which Animals Have Intellectual Rights, Dr. Heidi Issa Hassan
UAEU Law Journal
Not only humans question the extent to which they have certain intellectual property rights (IPRs), animals also, since they have been owned by humans for ages, may question the same thing. Now is the time to wonder about the extent of intellectual rights enjoyed by animals. This is a pivotal question that stems from reality. Does an animal enjoy an intellectual right?
The research derived its idea from an exceptional case of IP, which has been examined by the US judiciary. Therefore, this question has been answered in a theoretical framework, followed by a judicial one, and ending with specific …

An important goal in our world today is to eliminate food waste by reutilizing available food sources within local communities: leftover food items in restaurants, stores and food distribution centers that may be approaching expiration; and any perishable items not used in entirety within their desired period. This is highly significant, particularly during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper focuses on creating an interesting mobile application (app) called SeVa that provides a ubiquitous platform wherein users can visualize available food resources in their local area and consequently gain access to food, thereby tackling two major issues, i.e. hunger …

The collection, processing, and analysis of remote sensing data since the early 1970s has rapidly improved our understanding of change on the Earth’s surface. While satellite-based Earth observation has proven to be of vast scientific value, these data are typically confined to recent decades of observation and often lack important thematic detail. Here, we advance in this arena by constructing new spatially explicit settlement data for the United States that extend back to the early 19th century and are consistently enumerated at fine spatial and temporal granularity (i.e. 250m spatial and 5-year temporal resolution). We create these time series using …

Owls In Islam And Pakistan: Loopholes And Suggestions For Conservation And Management Of This Highly Ecologically Important Niche, Mubasher Hussain, Jamil Akhtar
Journal of Bioresource Management
Due to their vital ecological significance, owls drew the attention of several groups working on wildlife protection and conservation management across the globe. Hence, certain legal provisions have been articulated in the wildlife protection acts of the advanced countries to ensure full legal protection of wildlife including owls. Although there are certain laws concerning the protection of wild life in Pakistan, the specific and consistent legal provisions are still required for owl’s full protection. This article highlights a dire need of the articulation of such provisions respecting the prohibition of owl hunting on several religious, legal and ecological grounds.
