Online Gaming: An Inside Look At How Interpersonal Relationships Are Developed, Raquel Urquizo
Online Gaming: An Inside Look At How Interpersonal Relationships Are Developed, Raquel Urquizo
Culture, Society, and Praxis
The study included six participants that often interacted with other gamers online. The participants shared their experience with other users. The online gaming community is often stigmatized, and past studies have overlooked the social interactions that go on within the online community. The study found that online gamers often built strong interpersonal relationships among other gamers. These relationships often transcended outside of the game and even resulted with individuals meeting in person.

Understanding The Unconscious Bias Of Gender In Boñar, Spain, Alicia Cabral
Culture, Society, and Praxis
Within the province of Leon, Spain is a town named Boñar, which is known for its rich culture connected to the mining industry. In the summer of 2019, I conducted field research to discover the role women played during the mining industry within this town. While in the field looking for women that fit my criteria, I came across many locals who would direct me toward men for my interviews instead of the women I am in search of. This essay explores the idea that the townspeople of Boñar have been socialized to send questions about mining to the men …

Constraints (such as, for example, data privacy limitations) may limit the ability to measure the effectiveness of a piece of content (such as, for example, a Uniform Resource Locator (URL)) in solving a (e.g., network related) problem. Current analytics solutions focus on providing data on how many times a site is visited, but there is a lack of data that correlates a site’s visibility with its effectiveness at solving a problem. To address challenges of these types techniques are presented herein that support a method for developing and safely exposing resolution ratings of internal and external URLs – based on, …
Use Of Per-Cpu Counters To Protect Kernel-Mode Processes On A Multicore Processor, Joel Agnel Fernandes
Use Of Per-Cpu Counters To Protect Kernel-Mode Processes On A Multicore Processor, Joel Agnel Fernandes
Defensive Publications Series
When user and kernel mode processes are scheduled to run simultaneously on the same physical processor core via simultaneous multithreading, processor vulnerabilities can result in sensitive data restricted to kernel-mode processes being leaked to user-mode processes. While disabling simultaneous multithreading or use of a scheduler that determines sequence of execution can prevent such leakage, these changes degrade processor performance. This disclosure describes the use of per-CPU counters to track when each physical core of a processor begins and ends the execution of a program thread running in the kernel mode. Upon detection of such a thread, the core is identified …

Improved Color Compression For People With Color Blindness, Collin Irwin, Rachel Hausmann
Defensive Publications Series
Color blindness is estimated to affect around 9% of the population. Streaming media requires large bandwidth due to the size of the video which depends in part on the color information in the video. This disclosure describes techniques that leverage, with user permission, a user’s unique visual acuity to automatically adjust the parameters and the encoding of a video stream to incorporate suitably modified color information to reduce bandwidth and/or to improve quality of the video stream for the particular user.

Peak Oil, Progressivism, And Josephus Daniels, 1913–21, Roger Stern
Naval War College Review
Daniels’s time as Secretary of the Navy was activated by Progressivism and peak oil. To preserve the Naval Oil Reserve, Daniels ultimately resorted to seizing oil, always at a below-market price and sometimes without compensation at all. His campaign to save the Navy from both peak oil and the ostensible predations of “big oil” ended in fiasco—fuel-oil seizures led by armed Marines.

A “New Look” At Cold War Maritime Defense—The Royal Canadian Navy’S Seaward Defence Report And The Threat Of The Missile-Firing Submarine, 1955, Michael Whitby
Naval War College Review
The Soviets’ development in the mid-1950s of the capability to launch nuclear-armed missiles from conventional submarines constituted a significant challenge to Allied antisubmarine forces during the Cold War, impacting the U.S. Navy and Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) most. The RCN’s 1955 Seaward Defence Report reveals how a midsize navy with comparatively limited resources charged with defending a long coastline and valuable strategic targets proposed to cope with dramatically changing circumstances.
“Neither Fish Nor Fowl Nor Yet Good Red Herring”—Joint Institutions, Single-Service Priorities, And Amphibious Capabilities In Postwar Britain, Ian Speller
Naval War College Review
A joint approach to institutional responsibility for amphibious warfare served British needs during the Second World War but contributed to poor results after 1945. British capabilities did not recover until amphibious warfare became the particular responsibility of the naval service.

“Things Done By Halves”—Observations From America’S First Great-Power Competition, Benjamin F. Armstrong
Naval War College Review
By looking to the maritime past and scuttling the idea that somehow the “gray zones” of today have initiated something unique to our contemporary world, naval forces will be better prepared to address the challenges presented by maritime security, naval irregular warfare, and great-power friction on the world’s oceans. An examination of the Quasi War with France illuminates key questions for strategists and planners considering the interactions among great powers.

Ameliorating The Alliance Dilemma In An Age Of Gray-Zone Conflict—Lessons Learned From The U.S.-Japan Alliance, Michael M. Bosack
Naval War College Review
Fear of abandonment and entrapment can affect alliance management in a modern strategic environment marked by gray-zone conflict. Applying notable takeaways from scholarship to the context of the modern security environment identifies the type of incidents that affect formal alliances. The U.S.-Japan alliance provides a case study of how abandonment and entrapment influence alliance interactions.

Attitude Of Gratitude: Evaluation Of A Wellness Program To Improve Dispositional Gratitude Among Medical Students, Amelia C. Phillips, Farina A. Klocksieben
Journal of Wellness
Introduction: Medical students face significant mental health challenges as they matriculate through medical training. Research has emphasized the need for more interventions that promote physician trainee well-being and resilience during the early stages of training. Recent interventions have shown to be effective in promoting mental health and well-being; however, no interventions have examined the impact that daily gratitude practice, which is linked to increased well-being, may have on dispositional gratitude levels among medical students.
Methods: In Spring 2019, medical students at the University of South Florida were invited to participate in a gratitude program. Participants logged three good things that …
