Dsc-Based Generation Of Sinusoidal Pwm Signals With The Least Number Of Variables For Single-, Two- And Three-Phase Inverters., Walid Gloneim, Hamdy Ashour

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Inverters are the backbone of many applications such as adjustable speed drives (ASD), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and active power filters (APF). Although they have traditionally been controlled with analog circuits, digital control of inverters is now preferred. This paper covers theoretical and experimental aspects related to the implementation of a Digital Signal Controller (DSC) based true Sinusoidal Pulse Width (SPWM) signals with the minimum number of variables. The technique is applied for single, two- and three-phase inverters covering both bipolar and unipolar modes of operation. A simulation analysis is also carried out, then the resultant experimental and simulated waveforms …

Whiteness In Sports Media: Analyzing Mediated Epl Content For Racialized Narratives, Bradley A. Fountain

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and critical rhetoric of race, this study identifies messages of whiteness present in the narratives produced by sports media in order to highlight the presence of racial discrimination in the English Premier League (EPL). Since sports is a field with increased social impact, the EPL is an important place to center CRT’s agenda and contest dominant narratives. Focusing specifically on Sky Sports, the EPL’s official broadcasting partner, this study examines both verbal and nonverbal racialized messages across their matchday content. The findings suggest that Sky Sports supports the racial hierarchy in the EPL by communicating …

PD-1 blockade represents a promising treatment in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We analyzed results of a neoadjuvant randomized window-of-opportunity trial of nivolumab plus/minus tadalafil to investigate whether immunotherapy-mediated treatment effects vary by site of involvement (primary tumor, lymph nodes) and determine how radiographic tumor shrinkage correlates with pathologic treatment effect.

Patients and Methods: Forty-four patients enrolled in trial NCT03238365 were treated with nivolumab 240 mg intravenously on days 1 and 15 with or without oral tadalafil, as determined by random assignment, followed by surgery on day 31. Radiographic volumetric response (RVR) was defined as percent …

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) has been shown to improve health and social well-being by including diverse, marginalized community voices within academic–community partnerships. Although CBPR has gained in popularity, an explicit examination and evaluation of communication processes and outcomes throughout an entire CBPR project is lacking. Here, we analyze interviews with 10 stakeholders (i.e. 4 academic and 6 community partners) about their experiences in a three-phase, mixed-methods project exploring Hispanic and Somali community members’ perceptions of healthcare needs and access in a rural U.S. community. Results reflect that CBPR endeavors include communication challenges, successes, and ongoing tensions not simply between the …

The Human Dimension Of Peace And Aggression, Chiara Redaelli Dec 2020

The Human Dimension Of Peace And Aggression, Chiara Redaelli

International Law Studies

Since the adoption of the Charter of the United Nations, the current international legal framework has drastically changed. In its traditional understanding, aggression is “the supreme international crime” aimed at protecting sovereignty and the territorial integrity of states. On the other hand, the U.N. Charter endorses an understanding of peace in the negative sense, that is, as mere absence of war. As human rights have gained momentum, they have helped reshape the legal landscape, a phenomenon referred to as the humanization of international law. How do peace and aggression fit within the humanized legal framework? This article will investigate the …

The International Health Regulations (IHR), of which the World Health Organization is custodian, govern how countries collectively promote global health security, including prevention, detection, and response to potential global health emergencies such as the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. While Article 44 of this binding legal instrument requires countries to collaborate and assist each other in meeting their respective obligations, recent events demonstrate that the precise nature and scope of these legal obligations are ill-understood. A shared understanding of the level and type of collaboration legally required by the IHR is a necessary step in ensuring these obligations can be acted upon …

An Update Of The Virion Proteome Of Kaposi Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus, Ramina Nabiee, Basir Syed, Jesus Ramirez Castano, Rukhsana Lalani, Jennifer Totonchy

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The virion proteins of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) were initially characterized in 2005 in two separate studies that combined the detection of 24 viral proteins and a few cellular components via LC-MS/MS or MALDI-TOF. Despite considerable advances in the sensitivity and specificity of mass spectrometry instrumentation in recent years, leading to significantly higher yields in detections, the KSHV virion proteome has not been revisited. In this study, we have re-examined the protein composition of purified KSHV virions via ultra-high resolution Qq time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHR-QqTOF). Our results confirm the detection of all previously reported virion proteins, in addition to 17 …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) have been used to design STBCs that provide improved performance in terms of various design parameters. In this paper, we show that all QODs obtained from generic iterative construction techniques based on the Adams-Lax-Phillips approach have linear and decoupled decoders which significantly reduce the computational complexity at the receiver. Our result is based on the quaternionic description of communication channels among dual-polarized antennas. Another contribution of this work is the linear and decoupled decoder for quasi-orthogonal codes for non-square as well as square designs. The proposed solution …

Covid-19 Impact On Radiology Students’ Distance Learning (Fall 2020), Mary Lee, Zoya Vinokur, Jason Chan, Renzo Marmolejo, Cherylann Jackson-Holmes

Publications and Research

Distance learning (DL) is a teaching tool that offers education to students remotely in various locations (Ruiz, 2006). The increase in distance learning education is evident in all types of educational programs including those in Radiologic Sciences. DL education programs are expected to comply with all standards just as traditional programs are (Aaron, 2015). With traditional class settings, knowledge is taught at a given time and day and is structured in terms of course development and attendance. It does not factor in the domestic and familial responsibilities of the students outside the classroom walls or the effects of a worldwide …

Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) and Optical Spectroscopy using near-infrared (NIR) diffused light has demonstrated great potential for the initial diagnosis of tumors and in the assessment of tumor vasculature response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The aims of this project are 1) to test the different types of LEDs in the near-infrared range, and design the driving circuit, and test the modulation of LEDs at different frequencies; 2) to test the APDs as a detector, and build the receiver system and compare efficiency with pre-built systems. In this project, we are focusing on creating a low-cost infrared transmission system for tumor and …

How Late Does Your Flight Depart? A Quantile Regression Approach For A Chinese Case Study, Zhe Zheng, Wenbin Wei, Bo Zou, Minghua Hu Dec 2020

How Late Does Your Flight Depart? A Quantile Regression Approach For A Chinese Case Study, Zhe Zheng, Wenbin Wei, Bo Zou, Minghua Hu

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Flight departure delays cost airlines and airports millions of dollars and become a systematic problem. The on-time performance at an airport is connected to and easily affected by delay propagation from previous operations of flights using the airport. In this paper, we employ both Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and quantile regressions to investigate the impact of various influencing factors on flight departure delay. By using historical flight records and weather information, the impacts of delay propagation-related and other factors are quantified to study the correlations between the explanatory and response variables. Three variables, including previous arrival delay, turnaround buffer time, …

A Multimodal Analysis Of Bangladeshi Fairness Product Advertisements, Shushmita Hossain Khan Dec 2020

A Multimodal Analysis Of Bangladeshi Fairness Product Advertisements, Shushmita Hossain Khan

Student Works (2020-2029)

The notion of beauty is associated with fair skin tone in Bangladesh. Bangladeshis have varied skin tones although generally most of the people have a dark complexion. Fairness product advertisements tend to suggest that fair complexion is essential for marriage, successful career and promote that using their products can help women to achieve the perfect face, partner, and expected behavior from the society as well as acceptance from the opposite sex. This indicates that fair skin means superiority and beauty in Bangladeshi context. Although these advertisements have gone through some changes in last five years, within these, the advertisements still …

Fluorescence Spectroscopic And Molecular Modelling Studies On The Molecular Interaction Mechanism Of Bromodeoxyuridine With Human Serum Albumin, Amira Adlin Roslan Dec 2020

Fluorescence Spectroscopic And Molecular Modelling Studies On The Molecular Interaction Mechanism Of Bromodeoxyuridine With Human Serum Albumin, Amira Adlin Roslan

Student Works (2020-2029)

The interaction of a nucleoside analogue, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) with human serum albumin (HSA) was studied to investigate the binding phenomenon and analyze the protein conformation upon BrdU binding. Multiple spectroscopic techniques, viz. intrinsic and three-dimensional (3-D) fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy along with molecular docking were used. A decrease in the Stern-Volmer constant (Ksv) with the increase in temperature suggested BrdU-induced quenching of protein fluorescence as static quenching and thus implied BrdU−HSA complex formation. This was also supported by UV-Vis absorption spectral results, showing hyperchromism in the absorption spectrum of HSA upon BrdU addition. Intermediate binding …

Assessing The Vulnerability Of Monterey Bay Area Seniors To Covid-19, Ethan A. Quaranta, Gerhard L. Gross

Culture, Society, and Praxis

This paper assesses the vulnerability of seniors residing in the Monterey Bay Tri-County Region to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to weakened immune systems, seniors are the most at-risk members of our community to COVID-19, and have a death rate that is three times higher than the overall death rate to COVID-19. Using standard ambulance response times from each hospital throughout the area, our objective is to determine what proportion of Tri-County seniors aged 65 and over, including those who are in nursing homes, are living independently, and cannot afford health care, were within an adequate travel time to the hospital. …

Civilization And The Environment: The Norse And Ancient Egypt, Baard Pettersen

Culture, Society, and Praxis

A comparative study on the effects the environment can have on the development of a civilization, with the two case studies being the Norse and Ancient Egypt civilizations. Both had environments that isolated the population from the outside world, but the isolation differed in scope and therefore shaped each civilization in different ways. Isolation around a civilization is shown in Ancient Egypt to have allowed the society to focus inwards and create a structured and unified society. For the Norse civilization, whose isolating environment was on the border of the region, and also within, it created pockets of societies with …
