The Evil God Challenge: Two Significant Asymmetries, Carlo Alvaro
The Evil God Challenge: Two Significant Asymmetries, Carlo Alvaro
Publications and Research
Several authors have maintained that every argument in support of God, indeed everything that a theist claims about God, can be reversed and used in support of an evil god. The most salient example is the alleged symmetry between theodicies and reverse theodicies: God gave us free will to promote good, evil god gave us free will to promote evil; God allows evil for soul making, evil god allows good for soul destruction; our suffering is compensated for by the eternal bliss in the afterlife, our happiness is compensated for by the eternal damnation in the afterlife. Considering such symmetries, …
Diabolus Ex Machina? A Comparative Case Study To Test Whether Automatic Weapons Can Disproportionately Benefit Irregular Forces, Harrison Durland
Diabolus Ex Machina? A Comparative Case Study To Test Whether Automatic Weapons Can Disproportionately Benefit Irregular Forces, Harrison Durland
Honors Theses
Researchers in the field of irregular conflict have observed that irregular forces such as insurgents and guerrillas have been victorious or forced draws in a greater percentage of conflicts over the past century compared with the century prior. More generally, researchers and practitioners have sought to better understand why seemingly weaker, irregular forces are able to win some wars against enemies who have significant material and other conventional advantages. This thesis engages with some of the literature in this field and focuses on what appears to be a particularly understudied issue: the potential role of shifts/innovations in military technology. Specifically, …

Antibiotics In Prevention And Treatment Of Multi-Drug Resistant (Mdr) Organisms Causing Surgical Site Infection (Ssi), Saranya K. Lakshmi, Hema N. Gowda, Anuradha K
Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
Antibiotics play a vital role in prevention and treatment of various infections. But inappropriate antibiotic choice could lead to emergence of multi-drug resistance (MDR) among microorganisms. Since, the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of organisms could vary from place to place; forming a local prophylaxis and treatment protocol could hugely reduce this global burden. The primary objectives of the study were to observe the frequency of multi-drug resistant organisms causing Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) and to study the pattern of antibiotic usage for the prophylaxis and treatment of SSIs. A descriptive study was carried out in general surgical wards of KR hospital, …

Winning The Fight For Better Bus Service, Steven Higashide
Winning The Fight For Better Bus Service, Steven Higashide
PSU Transportation Seminars
The "right to the city" depends on the right to access the city, and U.S. regions are marked by profoundly unequal access. One of the clearest manifestations of this is the state of U.S. bus transit. Bus service is simple to improve and has vast potential to better people's lives, but has been constrained by the racist planning and politics that shape every American city.
How can we fulfill the promise of better buses and create abundant transit networks that expand access to opportunity? In this seminar, Higashide unpacks the elements of effective bus service – and cites examples from …

Evaluation Of Mechanical Properties Of Malaysia Local Source Wood For Electric Cruiser Board Applications, Mohamad Rosman Othaman
Student Works (2020-2029)
This research project revolves around the idea to reduce the carbon emission in mitigating the issue of climate change. An idea to introduce the electrical cruiser board by Muhammad Fiqkri Ismail from Universiti Kuala Lumpur with his idea to promote carbon less form of multimodal transportation for users in urban city of Greater Kuala Lumpur leads this research to study the elastic properties of local source woods in Malaysia that could be proposed for this application. The wood is used for the construction of the deck of cruiser board which designed three layers with the cross-ply laminate. Three types of …

Reducing Tornado Warning False Alarm Rates Across The National Weather Service Memphis County Warning Area, Preston Jewel Bradley
Reducing Tornado Warning False Alarm Rates Across The National Weather Service Memphis County Warning Area, Preston Jewel Bradley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Tornado detection has improved in recent years due, in part, to the deployment of dual-polarization radar technology. Depsite these improvements, false alarm rates (FAR) for tornado warnings remain high over Memphis, TN County Warning Area. The purpose of this research was to use a suite of radar products and storm environmental parameters in an effort to decrease tornado warning FAR over the Mid-South. The Memphis National Weather Service Forecast Office County Warning Area (CWA) serves as the study area for this reseach. Previous research has shown that storm mode and environment can imact FAR. Therefore, by combining radar products and …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This research leverages a City of Memphis dataset of over 1,700 survey responses with over 2,400 comments for understanding how people make decisions regarding support for or opposition to bike lanes in their communities. The survey comments were analyzed using both descriptive and thematic analyses along with unbiased computer-generated topic models. Six primary themes were identified along with six major intersections of these themes that provided important insights for understanding respondents’ perspectives. The primary themes are: People on bikes deserve a space on the road, Danger and safety, Roadway is for cars and drivers, No real need for bike lanes, …

[This paper is part of the Focused Collection on Curriculum Development: Theory into Design.] Common models of curricular development in physics education research (PER) have typically involved a hierarchical relationship between researchers and students, where researchers lead the design and testing of curriculum for students. We draw from work in students as partners and related fields in order to codesign curriculum in partnership with students. Such work has the potential to disrupt typical hierarchical relationships and interactions between students and faculty by involving students in the process of making curricular decisions. We invited undergraduate students to participate in a partnership …

Primary Pulmonary Synovial Sarcoma In A 49-Year-Old Male, Sanket Shah, Praveen Sankrithi, Kunal Shah, Samir Dalia, Mohan Rudrappa
Student Publications
Sarcoma is a malignant tumor arising from the mesenchymal tissues such as striated skeletal and smooth muscles, adipose tissue, bone, cartilage, and synovial tissue. The synovial subset of primary pulmonary sarcoma is very rare and is only described in a handful of cases. Our case describes the diagnostic approach and treatment regimen for a 49-year-old male with no significant past medical history. The diagnosis of a primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma was made through the use of endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA), histologic analysis, and immunostaining. The treatment utilized a multimodal approach including resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.
