Driven Dipolariton Transistors In Y-Shaped Channels, Patrick Serafin, Tim Byrnes, German Kolmakov V Dec 2020

Driven Dipolariton Transistors In Y-Shaped Channels, Patrick Serafin, Tim Byrnes, German Kolmakov V

Publications and Research

Exciton-dipolaritons are investigated as a platform for realizing working elements of a polaritronic transistor. Exciton-dipolaritons are three-way superposition of cavity photons, direct and indirect excitons in a bilayer semiconducting system embedded in an optical microcavity. Using the forced diffusion equation for dipolaritons, we study the room-temperature dynamics of dipolaritons in a transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterogeneous bilayer. Specifically, we considered a MoSe2-WS2 heterostructure, where a Y-shaped channel guiding the dipolariton propagation is produced. We demonstrate that polaritronic signals can be redistributed in the channels by applying a driving voltage in an optimal direction. Our findings open a route …

An Analysis Of The Competing Views On The Interpretation Of The U.S. Constitution, Joseph Longo Dec 2020

An Analysis Of The Competing Views On The Interpretation Of The U.S. Constitution, Joseph Longo

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis will examine the competing interpretations of the United States Constitution and the different effects these interpretations would have on the American government and legal systems. By examining legal precedents and different philosophical views, the varying interpretations will be examined and put through real-world scenarios. The founding of America was over 200 years ago, but philosophical views throughout history shall be used in the understanding of the different interpretations and real-world consequences. The thesis will not claim that one interpretation is proper and the perfect one for the United States, rather it will challenge each view in an attempt …

Disability Discrimination In Higher Education: The Enabling Spirit Of American Disability Legislation In Conflict With Judicial Interpretation, Travis Murray Dec 2020

Disability Discrimination In Higher Education: The Enabling Spirit Of American Disability Legislation In Conflict With Judicial Interpretation, Travis Murray

Student Scholarship

Disabled individuals have historically been treated as second-class citizens in the United States. While improvements have certainly been made over time, disabled individuals still face significant barriers to enjoying full and equal participation in society. Higher education is one aspect of American society still lacking proportional representation of the disabled community. To try and understand why disabled Americans fail to thrive in higher education at rates approaching those of non-disabled individuals, this paper will examine the following: how the history of disability discrimination in America influenced passage of powerful anti-discrimination legislation; how American courts have generally interpreted that legislation to …

All Publications

H3 K27M-mutant gliomas often manifest as midline gliomas, have a dismal prognosis, and have no effective treatments. ONC201 efficacy has been shown in high-grade glioma preclinical models and durable responses with single agent ONC201 have been reported in adults with recurrent H3 K27M-mutant gliomas. These observations led to a Phase I pediatric clinical trial of ONC201 dosed by body weight. This multi-center, open-label, 3 + 3 dose-escalation and dose-expansion clinical trial (NCT03416530) for H3 K27M-mutant glioma or non-biopsied DIPG has 6 arms: arms A and E determine the RP2D in pediatric post-radiation (recurrent or not-recurrent) H3 K27M-mutant glioma patients with …

A 10-Year-Old With Frequent, Disruptive, And Unexplained Night Awakenings, Sameh S. Morkous Md, Faan

Department of Pediatrics

A 10-year-old female presented to the sleep clinic for a second opinion about her epilepsy diagnosis. She had been treated with antiepileptic medication but her events persisted. The child would wake up several times every night speaking nonsense words, appear confused to her family, and then go back to sleep. A video of the polysomnography (PSG) showed the patient having two of her typical events. The patient was eventually diagnosed with confusional arousal (CoA) secondary to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The nocturnal events resolved after her OSA was treated. This case highlights an atypical clinical presentation for a type of …

Tense Familiarity: Psycho And The Origins, Effects, And Pedagogy Of The Trans-Coded Monster, Dudgrick Bevins Dec 2020

Tense Familiarity: Psycho And The Origins, Effects, And Pedagogy Of The Trans-Coded Monster, Dudgrick Bevins

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

The trans-coded monster, which arose from the spectacle of real-life serial killer Ed Gein’s murderous and taxidermic hobbies and the “gay-panic” spun from the headlines of the Leopold and Loeb slaying, the monster serves as a functionary of social control on two levels. First, the societal level, in which the monster, as a product of society, teaches what is and is not permissible in that society.. The second level is the personal level, in which the monster teaches the audience about the boundaries of their own desire and that desire’s possibility. The product of these two levels’ methods of control …

Toxicology And Analysis Of Psychoactive Tryptamines., Sara Malaca, Alfredo Fabrizio Lo Faro, Alice Tamborra, Simona Pichini, Francesco Paolo Busardò, Marilyn A. Huestis

Institute of Emerging Health Professions Faculty Papers

Our understanding of tryptamines is poor due to the lack of data globally. Tryptamines currently are not part of typical toxicology testing regimens and their contribution to drug overdoses may be underestimated. Although their prevalence was low, it is increasing. There are few published data on the many new compounds, their mechanisms of action, onset and duration of action, toxicity, signs and symptoms of intoxication and analytical methods to identify tryptamines and their metabolites. We review the published literature and worldwide databases to describe the newest tryptamines, their toxicology, chemical structures and reported overdose cases. Tryptamines are 5-HT2A receptor agonists …

Mechanics, Energetics And Implementation Of Grounded Running Technique: A Narrative Review, Sheeba Davis, Aaron Fox, Jason Bonacci, Fiddy Davis Dec 2020

Mechanics, Energetics And Implementation Of Grounded Running Technique: A Narrative Review, Sheeba Davis, Aaron Fox, Jason Bonacci, Fiddy Davis

Open Access archive

Grounded running predominantly differs from traditional aerial running by having alternating single and double stance with no flight phase. Approximately, 16% of runners in an open marathon and 33% of recreational runners in a 5 km running event adopted a grounded running technique. Grounded running typically occurs at a speed range of 2-3 m·s-1, is characterised by a larger duty factor, reduced vertical leg stiffness, lower vertical oscillation of the centre of mass (COM) and greater impact attenuation than aerial running. Grounded running typically induces an acute increase in metabolic cost, likely due to the larger duty factor. The increased …

Video-Based Iris Feature Extraction And Matching Using Deep Learning, Anisia Jabin Dec 2020

Video-Based Iris Feature Extraction And Matching Using Deep Learning, Anisia Jabin

Theses

This research is initiated to enhance the video-based eye tracker’s performance to detect small eye movements.[1] Chaudhary and Pelz, 2019, created an excellent foundation on their motion tracking of iris features to detect small eye movements[1], where they successfully used the classical handcrafted feature extraction methods like Scale InvariantFeature Transform (SIFT) to match the features on iris image frames. They extracted features from the eye-tracking videos and then used patent [2] an approach of tracking the geometric median of the distribution. This patent [2] excludes outliers, and the velocity is approximated by scaling by the sampling rate. To detect the …

Identification Of Degradation Products Formed From Glycerol And Terpenes In Aromatherapy Vaporizers, Alisha Ortiz

University Honors Theses

Degradation chemistry has been widely studied to assess the safety of aerosols in many fields. The study herein investigates the degradation products formed from MONQ personal aromatherapy devices- a new non-nicotine aromatherapy vape pen device on the market. These pens are marketed to alleviate symptoms of an unrecognized medical syndrome called “terpene deficiency”. These pens contain a glycerin (GL), or glycerol (VG), base and a blend of terpene-rich essential oils. Previous studies have investigated the degradation of both VG and terpenes and have shown that concerning compounds are released in the gas phase, including benzene, benzaldehyde, methacrolein and methyl vinyl …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

BACKGROUND: Nine oral disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) have been approved for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the United States. Few studies have examined self-reported quality of life (QoL) and functional status outcomes among patients who switch to oral medications from injectable MS therapies. This study compares self-reported QoL and disability status between participants switching from injectable to oral DMTs, to those who stay on injectable DMTs continuously for the same time period.

METHODS: Longitudinal data were assessed from relapsing MS participants in the Pacific Northwest MS Registry completing a minimum of two surveys between 2012 and 2018 with a …

Amplification Of Structural Inequalities: Research Sabbaticals During Covid-19, Carrie N. Baker Dec 2020

Amplification Of Structural Inequalities: Research Sabbaticals During Covid-19, Carrie N. Baker

Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications

With the closing of schools and child care centers, the pandemic has significantly increased parents’ caregiving labor, especially mothers, who do much more caregiving than fathers. The pandemic is hitting communities of color particularly hard, placing a heavy burden of stress and caregiving responsibilities for ill family members on Black and Brown women. In this essay, I examine how the pandemic is influencing the ability of female faculty members to engage in research and writing during sabbaticals, with particular attention to the impact of parenthood status, race/ethnicity, and socio-economic background. I argue that the pandemic is amplifying pre-existing structural inequalities …

Genome-Wide Identification, Phylogenetic And Expression Pattern Analysis Of Gata Family Genes In Brassica Napus, Weizhuo Zhu, Yiyi Guo, Yeke Chen, Dezhi Wu, Lixi Jiang

Publications

BACKGROUND: Transcription factors GATAs are involved in plant developmental processes and respond to environmental stresses through binding DNA regulatory regions to regulate their downstream genes. However, little information on the GATA genes in Brassica napus is available. The release of the reference genome of B. napus provides a good opportunity to perform a genome-wide characterization of GATA family genes in rapeseed. RESULTS: In this study, 96 GATA genes randomly distributing on 19 chromosomes were identified in B. napus, which were classified into four subfamilies based on phylogenetic analysis and their domain structures. The amino acids of BnGATAs were obvious divergence …

Genetic And Epigenetic Determinants Of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, Tanner Bakhshi, Philippe T. Georgel Dec 2020

Genetic And Epigenetic Determinants Of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, Tanner Bakhshi, Philippe T. Georgel

Biomedical Sciences

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of lymphoma and is notorious for its heterogeneity, aggressive nature, and the frequent development of resistance and/or relapse after treatment with standard chemotherapy. To address these problems, a strong emphasis has been placed on researching the molecular origins and mechanisms of DLBCL to develop effective treatments. One of the major insights produced by such research is that DLBCL almost always stems from genetic damage that occurs during the germinal center (GC) reaction, which is required for the production of high-affinity antibodies. Indeed, there is significant overlap between the mechanisms that …

You Are Academia, Jason Faust

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Jason Faust’s You Are Academia presents the modern landscape of academia as a passive system of exponential growth. The core gameplay mechanic suggests that the fundamental purpose of current higher learning structures is meant to improve revenue and the quantity of works produced—not necessarily the quality of student education. This is a work of overt satire and takes roughly 20 minutes to complete.
