Magnetic Anisotropy Reveals Acadian Transpressional Fabrics In An Appalachian Ophiolite (Thetford Mines, Canada), A Di Chiara, Antony Morris, Mark W. Anderson, Luca Menegon, Alain Tremblay

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

SUMMARY Magnetic anisotropy has proved effective in characterizing primary, spreading-related magmatic fabrics in Mesozoic (Tethyan) ophiolites, for example in documenting lower oceanic crustal flow. The potential for preservation of primary magnetic fabrics has not been tested, however, in older Palaeozoic ophiolites, where anisotropy may record regional strain during polyphase deformation. Here, we present anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility results from the Ordovician Thetford Mines ophiolite (Canada) that experienced two major phases of post-accretion deformation, during the Taconian and Acadian orogenic events. Magnetic fabrics consistent with modal layering in gabbros are observed at one locality, suggesting that primary fabrics may survive deformation …

Ehealth Technologies And The Know-Do Gap: Exploring The Role Of Knowledge Mobilisation, Sheena Asthana, Rod Sheaff, Ray Jones, Arunangsu Chatterjee

Peninsula Medical School

Background: eHealth technologies are widely believed to contribute to improving health and patients’ experience of care and reducing health system costs. While many studies explore barriers to and facilitators of eHealth innovation, we lack understanding of how this knowledge can be translated into workable, practicable and properly resourced knowledge mobilisation (KM) strategies. Aims and objectives: This paper describes the aims, methods and outputs of a large European Union funded project (eHealth Productivity and Innovation in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (EPIC)) to support the development of a sustainable innovation ecosystem in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, in order …

Ecosystem Services Of Temporary Streams Differ Between Wet And Dry Phases In Regions With Contrasting Climates And Economies, Rachel Stubbington, Mike Acreman, Vicenç Acuña, Philip J. Boon, Andrew J. Boulton, Judy England, David Gilvear, Tim Sykes, Paul J. Wood

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Temporary streams are dynamic ecosystems in which mosaics of flowing, ponded and dry habitats support high biodiversity of both aquatic and terrestrial species. Species interact within habitats to perform or facilitate processes that vary in response to changing habitat availability. A natural capital approach recognizes that, through such processes, the ‘natural assets’ of all ecosystems deliver services that benefit people. The ecosystem services of temporary streams remain largely unexplored, in particular those provided during ponded and dry phases. In addition, recent characterizations have focused on dryland systems, and it remains unclear how service provision varies among different climatic regions, or …

Remimazolam For Anaesthesia Or Sedation, J. Robert Sneyd, Ann E. Rigby-Jones Jan 2020

Remimazolam For Anaesthesia Or Sedation, J. Robert Sneyd, Ann E. Rigby-Jones

Peninsula Medical School

Purpose of review Anaesthesia and sedation are ubiquitous in contemporary medical practice. Developments in anaesthetic pharmacology are targeted on reducing physiological disturbance whilst maintaining or improving titrateability, recovery profile and patient experience. Remimazolam is a new short-acting benzodiazepine in the final stages of clinical development. Recent findings Clinical experience with remimazolam comprises volunteer studies and a limited number of clinical investigations. In addition, laboratory investigations explore the implications of its 'soft drug' pharmacology. Summary Remimazolam provides effective procedural sedation with superior success rates and recovery profile when compared to midazolam. Comparisons with propofol are required. Preliminary studies suggest potential for …

Oxygenation Of The Critically Ill In Selected Intensive Care Units In The Uk: Are We Usual?, Benjamin Post, Edward Palmer, Steve Harris, Mervyn Singer, Daniel Martin

Peninsula Medical School

Recent data suggest a conservative approach to oxygen use in acutely unwell patients could be beneficial compared to more liberal use; guidance also suggests oxygen saturation (SpO2) should not exceed 96-98% in those receiving oxygen. Using data from 12 English intensive care units (ICUs), we demonstrated that in 29,657 patient episodes the average SpO2 was 96.2% and 97.2% for medical and surgical patients, respectively. Furthermore, 61% and 23% of patients receiving supplemental oxygen spent at least half their time in ICU with SpO2 readings >96% and >98% respectively. Patients managed on English ICUs tend to have a higher SpO2 than …

After The Fire: Post-Pandemic Reflections, Daniel Martin

Peninsula Medical School

Over the space of a few months virtually everything we know has been turned on its head. In Wuhan (China) during the closing months of 2019 a spillover event occurred in which the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was transferred from its animal host population into humans 1, 2. Spread mainly by respiratory droplets, the virus has a basic reproduction number (R0) of between 2-6 in an unprotected population making it more contagious than influenza, but considerably less so than measles. As SARS-CoV-2 rapidly spread across the planet, aided by our love of intercontinental travel, the local market …

Peninsula Medical School

The aim of this review is to systematically describe and quantify the effects of PA interventions on alcohol and other drug use outcomes, and to identify any apparent effect of PA dose and type, possible mechanisms of effect, and any other aspect of intervention delivery (e.g. key behaviour change processes), within a framework to inform the design and evaluation of future interventions. Systematic searches were designed to identify published and grey literature on the role of PA for reducing the risk of progression to alcohol and other drug use (PREVENTION), supporting individuals to reduce alcohol and other drug use for …

Peninsula Medical School

Background There is modest evidence that exercise referral schemes increase physical activity in inactive individuals with chronic health conditions. There is a need to identify additional ways to improve the effects of exercise referral schemes on long-term physical activity. Objectives To determine if adding the e-coachER intervention to exercise referral schemes is more clinically effective and cost-effective in increasing physical activity after 1 year than usual exercise referral schemes. Design A pragmatic, multicentre, two-arm randomised controlled trial, with a mixed-methods process evaluation and health economic analysis. Participants were allocated in a 1 : 1 ratio to either exercise referral schemes …
