Production Of Π0 And Η Mesons In U+U Collisions At √Snn=192 Gev, Mike Daugherity, Donald Isenhower, Rusty Towell Dec 2020

Production Of Π0 And Η Mesons In U+U Collisions At √Snn=192 Gev, Mike Daugherity, Donald Isenhower, Rusty Towell

Engineering and Physics

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured π0 and η mesons at midrapidity in U+U collisions at √sNN=192 GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the π0(η)→γγ decay modes. A strong suppression of π0 and η meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U+U collisions relative to binary scaled p+p results. Yields of π0 and η mesons measured in U+U collisions show similar suppression pattern to those measured in Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200 GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The η/π0 ratios do not show dependence on centrality or …

Has Neofunctionalization Through Promoter Element Differentiation Driven Drought-Adaptation In Artemisia Tridentata?, Walker Morales, Jim Beck, Anthony Melton, Sven Buerki

VIP 2020

Artemisia tridentata is an ecologically important shrub in dry habitats of western North America. This species has a large, complex genome due to an evolutionary history with hybridization and whole genome duplications. Aquaporins are an important family of genes that function in water transport. We hypothesize that whole genome duplications in Artemisia tridentata may have allowed for neofunctionalization of Aquaporin genes, allowing for greater drought adaptation. To test this hypothesis, aquaporins in the Artemisia tridentata and Artemisia annua genomes were identified via a BLAST search. Afterward, the upstream promoters were obtained and categorized by categories obtained from a PCA based …

Toxacariasis: The Neglected Parasitic Zoonosis, Cassie Wigfall, Jared Romero Dec 2020

Toxacariasis: The Neglected Parasitic Zoonosis, Cassie Wigfall, Jared Romero

VIP 2020

Toxocariasis is an infection by a roundworm parasite that lives in the intestines of cats, dogs, and foxes. Their eggs are shed in animal feces contaminating the ground around them. Infectious eggs can be ingested, hatch, and release larvae that penetrate the intestines and travel to the brain, liver, heart, lungs, muscle, and/or eye. Toxocariasis has been identified by the Centers for Disease Control as one of five neglected parasitic infections (NPI) as surveillance, prevention, and/or treatment are given little attention. About 85% of clinical physicians claim passing knowledge of Toxocariasis, however, when given a list of symptoms only half …

Development Of An In Vitro Method Of Propagation For Artemisia Tridentata Subsp. Tridentata To Support Genome Sequencing And Genotype-By-Environment Research, Hunter Clark, Peggy Martinez, Rachael Barron, Marcelo Serpe, Sven Buerki

VIP 2020

Basin big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata subsp. tridentata) is a keystone species of the sagebrush steppe, a widespread ecosystem of western North America threatened by climate change. The study's goal was to develop an in vitro method of propagation for this taxon to support genome sequencing and genotype-by-environment research on drought tolerance. Suchresearch may ultimately facilitate the reintroduction of big sagebrush in degraded habitats. Effects of IBA and NAA on rooting of shoot tips were tested on 45 individuals and 15 shoot tips per individual. Growth regulator and individual-seedling effects on percent rooting and roots per shoot tip were …

Increasing temperatures and aridity negatively affect plant communities, including the recruitment of foundational species like sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata). While research on the genomic basis of plant resilience towards drought has been conducted in crops and model plants, fewer studies have evaluated natural plant communities. We provide a resource for identifying genes underpinning drought across a broad range of plants using a literature mining approach with the newly developed package G2PMineR. Using our initial gene pool query, we refined the pipeline and manually vetted the top 50 candidate genes/gene families for relatedness to plant stress drought response and categorized …

VIP 2020

Animal, Human, and Environmental Health are all interconnected and reliant upon one another. Humans tend to think of themselves and their actions as separate from nature, rather than part of the larger interrelated system. Our species elitist thinking has resulted in our greatest challenges going forward as a planet, such as climate change, extreme weather events and wildfires, food insecurities, increased antimicrobial resistance, zoonosis, and currently a pandemic. The One Health Solutions VIP course analyzes complex global problems and encourages the development of solutions in an attempt to slow and possibly reverse humanity's role in changing our planet and provide …

VIP 2020

“Regenerative agriculture” is a rehabilitative approach to farming and grazing practices that focus on rebuilding topsoil and restoring soil biodiversity. Instead of using destructive practices like tilling and expensive products like chemical fertilizers and pesticides that degrade soil quality, farmers take a holistic approach incorporating conservation tillage, cover crops, crop rotation, livestock grazing, and composting to revitalize their soil. In recent years, the importance of the soil has become increasingly apparent. Its health may hold the key to ensuring food security and halting global climate change. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates, if we continue with current agricultural practices, …

Rabies And One Health: When The Forest Enters The City, Kassidi Petersen Dec 2020

Rabies And One Health: When The Forest Enters The City, Kassidi Petersen

VIP 2020

Rabies is a virus spread via saliva, often through a bite by infected animals to people and can be spread to any mammal, including house pets like dogs and cats. Signs to look for are behavioral changes, paralysis, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and excessive saliva. The incubation of rabies varies greatly but until clinical signs are shown it cannot be transmitted and cannot be tested for in living animals, only by studying dead animal's brains. As of right now there is no cures for rabies, and it is most often deadly. There are on average 2 rabies cases in humans per …

The Importance Of Coral Reefs And How To Ensure Their Longevity, A One Health Approach, Lexi Shusterove, Jared Romero Dec 2020

The Importance Of Coral Reefs And How To Ensure Their Longevity, A One Health Approach, Lexi Shusterove, Jared Romero

VIP 2020

Coral Reefs are large, diverse underwater ecosystems made from coral; the skeletons of colonial marine invertebrates. The reefs provide food, shelter, and areas for breeding for about 25% of the ocean's marine species. When it comes to the environment, reefs generate half of Earth's oxygen and absorb one-third of the carbon dioxide generated from burning fossil fuels. Along with this, the reefs provide people with food, jobs, new medicine opportunities, and even protection from storms and erosion. The coral reefs are not only important to the environment and marine life, but to the economy as well. However, coral reefs are …

Brazil, Big Hydro, And A Beautiful Monster: “Green” Energy Generation In The Xingu River Basin, Ian F. Hirons

Student Works

Brazil is quickly becoming an influential actor on the world stage of geopolitics. The nation has achieved global economic and environmental recognition due to the extensive development of its hydrological resources in the form of hydroelectric power plants. As the world’s second greatest generator of hydroelectricity, Brazil has proven a staunch adherence to building dams in the large-scale. Though these dams have brought electricity to millions of people across the country, the socio-ecological toll inflicted by their construction has been devastating to natural biomes and local inhabitants. This article traces Brazil’s proclivity for large-scale hydropower to four motivational categories often …

If wave energy technology is to mature to commercial success, array optimization could play a key role in that process. This paper outlines physical and numerical modeling of an array of five oscillating water column wave energy converters. Numerical model simulations are compared with experimental tank test data for a non-optimal and optimal array layout. Results show a max increase of 12% in average power for regular waves, and 7% for irregular waves between the non-optimized and optimized layouts. The numerical model matches well under many conditions; however, improvement is needed to adjust for phase errors. This paper outlines the …
