Workplace English As Professional Development: The Uw-Madison Model, Karen Parrillo Dec 2020

Workplace English As Professional Development: The Uw-Madison Model, Karen Parrillo

MITESOL Journal: An Online Publication of MITESOL

University human resources departments dedicate themselves to providing relevant professional development to their institutions’ employees. However, few of these departments consider the language learning needs of employees who are nonnative English speakers. This paper introduces the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison)’s unique approach to meeting the English language learning needs of employees through its Cultural Linguistic Services (CLS) department within the Office of Human Resources (OHR). The CLS Workplace English Program features the development of contextualized learning materials, active participation of employees’ supervisors, dynamic scheduling, and on-the-job practice with authentic communicative tasks. The collaboration between CLS/OHR and other UW-Madison departments has …

Montgomery, Crerar And The Possibility Of Canadian Military Independence, 1944, J.L. Granatstein Dec 2020

Montgomery, Crerar And The Possibility Of Canadian Military Independence, 1944, J.L. Granatstein

Canadian Military History

Bernard Montgomery and Harry Crerar were not friends, and their relationship grew worse in September 1944 when Crerar skipped a meeting at Montgomery’s headquarters to attend a commemorative service at Dieppe. A furious Montgomery indicated that he wanted to sack Crerar, and the Canadian responded that he would consult his government. Monty quickly realized he could not easily get rid of the First Canadian Army commander, but Crerar, fuming, asked Canadian Military Headquarters to study how to secure more independence for his army. The course of the war by late 1944 eventually rendered this idea moot, but it was nonetheless …

Connecting The Dots And Dashes: Wireless Telegraphy Communication In The Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914–1918, Brian Pascas Dec 2020

Connecting The Dots And Dashes: Wireless Telegraphy Communication In The Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914–1918, Brian Pascas

Canadian Military History

This article seeks to explain wireless telegraphy (W/T) equipment, its development and use over the course of the First World War and how W/T performed in conjunction with the established landline network. W/T deployment during Canadian Expeditionary Force battles is evaluated to determine whether W/T was viewed as an alternative battlefield communication medium or simply as a standby for emergency situations. The analysis discloses that the Canadian infantry was unable to take advantage of continuous wave, a superior form of wireless that the artillery relied upon. This article contends that by war’s end W/T had become a viable substitute for …

Between Fact And Fiction: The 26th Battalion, The “Crater Fight,” And The “Myth Of The War Experience”, Curt Mainville Dec 2020

Between Fact And Fiction: The 26th Battalion, The “Crater Fight,” And The “Myth Of The War Experience”, Curt Mainville

Canadian Military History

In October 1915, during only their second tour of the front line, New Brunswick’s 26th Battalion conducted a reconnaissance-in-force upon a recently detonated German mine in front of their firing trench. The “crater fight,” as it has come to be known, resulted in twenty-one dead and thirty-six wounded but was portrayed as a success. But how much of what was printed in local newspapers was true? Official reports and personal accounts were engaging, idealistic and emotive. They were also highly exaggerated. This was the genesis of the “myth of the war experience”—a marriage of both fact and fiction that reflected …

Journal of Social Care

This study examines social care workers experiences and knowledge in supporting young people living in residential care cope with the associated trauma of exposure to domestic violence in their pre-care history. Understanding the effect trauma can have on a young person living in residential care is a vital component of social care practice. A qualitative research methodology was implemented to gather the data from social care practitioners working in residential care with young people, involving three focus groups and one semi-structured interview. Emerging strongly from the findings is the difficulty social care practitioners experienced in separating out the trauma associated …

Medical Decision Making Using Knowledge Of Patient Identification As Aboriginal Or Torres Strait Islander: What Do Medical Students Think?, Winnifred Knight, Michael J. Platow, Diana M. Grace, Oliver Tye, Jess Styles Dec 2020

Medical Decision Making Using Knowledge Of Patient Identification As Aboriginal Or Torres Strait Islander: What Do Medical Students Think?, Winnifred Knight, Michael J. Platow, Diana M. Grace, Oliver Tye, Jess Styles

Australian Indigenous HealthBulletin

Objective

Best-practices guidelines require Australian health practitioners to ask all patients “are you [is the person] of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin?”. The present study investigated medical student attitudes regarding medical decisions made after asking this standard status question.

Methods

A hypothetical interaction between a doctor and an Aboriginal patient was presented in a pen-and-paper questionnaire in which: (1) the doctor considered (or did not consider) the patient’s Indigenous status relevant to make a medical diagnosis, and (2) the doctor registered (or did not register) the patient for the Closing the Gap PBS co-payment. Participants were first- and second-year …

Opinions And Perceptions Of Indigenous Mental Health Applications From Service Providers And Youth Samples: A Pilot Study, Lucas Silva-Myles, Sarah Blunden

Australian Indigenous HealthBulletin

Objective

To evaluate opinions and perceptions around managing mental health and the relevance of available mental health applications (apps) for Indigenous youth populations by surveying values of Indigenous service providers and youth samples in a regional area, in order to better target online mental health information.

Method

Participants were 15 Indigenous youths (6 males, 9 females) with a mean (SD) age of 16.93 (2.37), and 30 Indigenous service providers (6 males, 24 females) with a mean age (SD) of 34.59 (12.26). Participants were recruited through a Queensland regional Indigenous community organisation, and given a face-to-face survey, (developed with Indigenous community …

An Exploration Of Interventions For Healing Intergeneration Trauma To Develop Successful Healing Programs For Aboriginal Australians: A Literature Review, Alison J. Simpson, William Abur, James A. Charles Dec 2020

An Exploration Of Interventions For Healing Intergeneration Trauma To Develop Successful Healing Programs For Aboriginal Australians: A Literature Review, Alison J. Simpson, William Abur, James A. Charles

Australian Indigenous HealthBulletin

Introduction

Health outcomes and life expectancy of Indigenous people throughout the world are far poorer than non-Indigenous populations. Emerging evidence from research shows that many social issues which impact on Indigenous peoples globally is linked to trauma over generations. This review explores literature about Indigenous people from around the world to seek interventions which have been successful in healing intergenerational trauma.

Method

To identify interventions that have been successful in healing intergenerational trauma amongst Indigenous populations globally, a systematic search strategy was conducted using keywords and synonyms related to the topic. Peer reviewed academic literature was sourced from four …

Deciphering Functional Redundancy In The Human Microbiome., Liang Tian, Xu-Wen Wang, Ang-Kun Wu, Yuhang Fan, Jonathan Friedman, Amber Dahlin, Matthew K Waldor, George M. Weinstock, Scott T Weiss, Yang-Yu Liu

Faculty Research 2020

Although the taxonomic composition of the human microbiome varies tremendously across individuals, its gene composition or functional capacity is highly conserved - implying an ecological property known as functional redundancy. Such functional redundancy has been hypothesized to underlie the stability and resilience of the human microbiome, but this hypothesis has never been quantitatively tested. The origin of functional redundancy is still elusive. Here, we investigate the basis for functional redundancy in the human microbiome by analyzing its genomic content network - a bipartite graph that links microbes to the genes in their genomes. We find that this network exhibits several …
