Nontuberculous Mycobacterium (Ntm) Infection In Aquatic Workers With Purified Protein Derivative (Ppd) And Gold Quantiferon Tests., Lavanya Ravipati, Sarah A. Howard
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Background: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections are commonly caused by Mycobacterium marinum and fortuitum with M. marinum more likely to cause skin infections. Aquatic environments are a potential source of contact with M. marinum and fortuitum. Patients with NTM infections may present with positive tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) and/or gold QuantiFERON tests. However, PPD cannot differentiate between NTM infection and other tuberculous infections caused by different mycobacterial strains. We present a patient a marine biologist who was asymptomatic and presented for further evaluation as she has a h/o positive PPD and gold QuantiFERON test.
Methods: Patient informed consent was …

Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Mucosal bleeding is a well-known complication of having a ventricular assist device and commonly presents with epistaxis. Although the frequency of epistaxis as a complication in patients with a ventricular assist device has been documented in the literature, to our knowledge the cost of this complication has not been reported. This case report examines the financial burden of ventricular assist device-associated epistaxis in a single patient from September 2018 to December 2019 using ICD 10 diagnostic codes. The patient was found to have accumulated $138,020 in costs over 38 encounters. This case report not only highlights the recurrent nature and …

Background: Cancer-related abdominal pain is a common symptom associated with upper intra-abdominal carcinoma, especially in patients with advanced disease and it has posed a significant therapeutic challenge to medical practitioners. Typically, cancer pain can be managed by following the World Health Organization 3-step analgesic ladder. However, analgesic use of opioids, the mainstay treatment for moderate-to-severe cancer-related pain, may be ineffective in a subset of cancer patients. Escalation of dosage may be limited by opioid-induced side effects. The aim of this study was to review the literature addressing the effect of neurolytic celiac plexus block (NCPB) on the palliation of pain …

Introduction
Despite high costs of education, extended lengths of training, and rapidly increasing student debt, personal finance is an often-overlooked topic within professional school curricula. Due to the combination of high debt burden and poor financial literacy, professional students report low confidence and high stress regarding their personal finances. While some medical schools have begun to integrate financial education into their formal training, others provide little to no resources to combat this growing issue.
Methods
To address this gap and provide financial education opportunities, the Financial Development Club (FDC) was founded by students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. …

The Yakuza: Organized Crime In Japan, Darlene N. Moorman
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
Examining organized crime groups should not be purely economic; in other words, the culture, social structure, political contexts, and so on, are also critical in an insightful analysis of any organized crime group. For this paper, the Japanese yakuza are considered both in an economic viewpoint, such as how they make money, but also in other areas, such as its syndicates' notable cultural contributions and specific social characteristics. Moreover, this paper explores the dynamic changing of the organization overtime, especially in regards to its shifting relationship with the Japanese government.

Foreign Investments In Disputed Maritime Zones: Maritime Disputes As Events Of Force Majeure In International Law And International Investment Contracts, Hazem M. Kassem
BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية
Sovereign rights in Exclusive economic zones and Continental shelves are functionally limited to the economic exploitation of these zones. Moreover, in the case of disputed maritime zones these sovereign rights are neither exclusive nor necessarily constant. Nevertheless, states are still expected to provide the investments established in these zones the same treatment they should provide in their territories where they exercise full and constant sovereignty. If a host state agrees to the establishment of an investment in a maritime zone that become later contested, do the occurrence of the contestation and the hazards arising from such contestation relief the host …

The Rule Of Commonly Known Is Equal To The Conditional, Dr. Zeinab Darwish
BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية
Custom (commonly known) has a place in Sharia and law. The rule under study can include many texts of the law in its various branches. To study this important rule, several questions have been asked about it: Is this rule true, what is its concept, what are its limits, what is it withheld and what are its applications? And if what people are familiar with is not accepted by Sharia or not implied by law, goes under this rule? Can what people are familiar with be considered a custom and in this way can be applied by the law? What …

On February 8, 2018, the State Shura Council issued its decision No. (421 / 2017-2018), in which it annulled the implicit decision of the General Directorate of Public Security abstaining to cancel the decisions issued by the Directorate regarding amending the requirements for entry and residence of Syrian citizens to the Lebanese Republic. The importance of the decision lies in the fact that it came to present one of the established principles in the administrative law arena, that is the responsibility of the administration for its actions is not an absolute responsibility; however, it is limited by restrictions that would …

We have covered in this study, the types of legal accountability of the Head of the State, within the framework of public law and international criminal law. This liability includes:
First: constitutional or political accountability, second: administrative responsibility, third: Criminal responsibility and finally International Criminal Responsibility.
At the end, we had a general recommendation, which is: The head of state is a person by nature, and he is not infallible. Therefore, we can conclude that the head of the state must be constitutionally accountable, with or without powers, and he must be held accountable administratively, whether he is a direct …

Personal Status Between The Sanctity Of The Text And The Legitimacy Of Jurisprudence, Dr. Wafic Hijazi
BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية
Personal status rules are directly related to human life and have legal effects on social life in general. Those rules are developed conditionally and carefully by the jurisprudence, thus the judge cannot harm its sanctity or deviate from its purposes or neglect to thinking deeply about its implications. Therefore, the judge is given discretionary power regarding the non-textual issues that are subject to customs and change of interests in a way that guarantees family stability and community safety within the legitimacy of jurisprudence whether the text is explicit or the rule is implied.

The phenomenon of judicial specialization is urgent in the present era because of the quality and mastery of judicial work. The economic courts were one of the most important steps of Egyptian legislation in the good work of that principle under Law 120 for the year 2008. With the development of the litigation system in Egypt in recent years, the state is moving towards many legislative reforms. This law was one of one of the laws that has been updated, in order to achieve the goal of establishing these courts and to suit the needs of the Egyptian state to …

In his respect, we mean the role of the predictive justice in substantiating the reliability of the legal action from the perspective of clarifying the opportunities that are provided by such justice for such reliability in the Anglo-Saxon and Latin jurisprudence, in addition to the available potentials of its success in increasing such reliability, for the objective of understanding the way of future approaching to such reliability and …
Punitive Damages In The Lebanese Legal System, Prof. Sami Badih Mansour
Punitive Damages In The Lebanese Legal System, Prof. Sami Badih Mansour
BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية
The conception of compensation in the Lebanese legal system is based on equalizing between the compensation value and the amount of damage, and mainly this conception is independent of the notion of mistake and its aggravation. This Article 134 of the Lebanese Code of Obligations and Contracts stated expressly the latter idea and took into consideration the moral damages not only the materials ones. This conception of compensation adopted in Civil law legal systems differs radically and clearly from the idea of compensation in the Anglo-Saxon laws. Punitive compensation is related to the act committed and its consequences. So, the …

Moral Damage And The Juridical Person- An Analytical Critical Reading Of The Judgement Of The Egyptian Court Of Cassation -The Civil & Commercial Chamber, 22/1/2018, Prof. Mohamad Hassan Kassem
BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية
This paper is an analytical critical reading of the judgement of the Civil & Commercial chamber of the Egyptian Court of Cassation issued on 01/22/2018, in which it concludes that moral damage is not conceivable unless it strikes a physical person. According to the Court, a Juridical person is immune from such damage. Therefore, the latter cannot be compensated for moral damage unless this damage is coupled with material damage, so that the compensation in this case remains a compensation for material damage.By its decision, the Court adopts a narrow concept of moral damage, which contradicts the provisions of the …

Making Data Playable: A Game Co-Creation Method To Promote Creative Data Literacy, Stefan Werning
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This article explores how making data playable, i.e. developing exploratory co-creation techniques that use elements of play and games to interpret small to mid-sized datasets beyond the current focus on visual evidence, can help a) promote creative data literacy in higher education, and b) expand existing definitions of data literacy. The article briefly investigates playful characteristics in existing data practices, and discusses how this perspective compares to existing frameworks that define data literacy. In a second step, we present a Discursive Game Design technique to promote creative data literacy. The article reports on findings from a sample workshop, during which …

To meet the challenges of a data-driven society, high school students need new arrays of literacy skills. In the United States, school librarians, who work across disciplines, are well-positioned to help students improve their data practice, but they first need new domain knowledge. This article presents findings from an evaluating survey and session evaluation data from a virtual data literacy conference, which were part of a federally-funded project to develop data literacy skills among high school librarians and educators. Findings indicated a noticeable shift in participant perceptions of the need and urgency for data literacy instruction across content areas and …

Given the importance of data skills to the economy and the skills shortage within data science, educational policy makers have identified the importance of including technical and analytical data skills in the school curriculum. An equally important aim is to educate children and young people to become data citizens who are aware of the current uses of data in society, able to use data to make decisions in their lives, and are actively engaged in critiquing the societal implications of future uses of data. The paper will explore the meanings of data citizenship, in light of the findings of a …

Internet users may fail to recognize how algorithms filter and personalize information. Two studies explored college students’ algorithm awareness across varying contexts. Study 1 examined Facebook users’ awareness of its algorithms (N = 222). Only about half recognized that Facebook does not show all their friends’ posts. These students more often reported making adjustments to News Feed settings than students lacking algorithm awareness. Study 2 compared students’ (N = 244) algorithm awareness for online shopping and search, and the efficacy of video instruction to increase awareness. Students were more algorithm aware for online shopping. Compared to those who …

Data (Il)Literacy Education As A Hidden Curriculum Of The Datafication Of Education, Pekka Mertala
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This position paper uses the concept of “hidden curriculum” as a heuristic device to analyze everyday data-related practices in formal education. Grounded in a careful reading of the theoretical literature, this paper argues that the everyday data-related practices of contemporary education can be approached as functional forms of data literacy education: deeds with unintentional educational consequences for students’ relationships with data and datafication. More precisely, this paper suggests that everyday data-related practices represent data as cognitive authority and naturalize the routines of all-pervading data collection. These routines lead to what is here referred to as “data (il)literacy” – an uncritical, …

Defining A Critical Data Literacy For Recommender Systems: A Media-Grounded Approach, Arnaud Claes, Thibault Philippette
Journal of Media Literacy Education
The digital processing of massive data is becoming a central component of our technological infrastructures. While being able to use these tools efficiently is an issue that cannot be ignored, it appears crucial to provide citizens with the means to control their technical environment. Recommender systems and personalization technologies are currently being blamed for the destabilization of users’ informational ecosystems and a growing polarization of opinions. However, a critical review of the current literature on the subject indicates that these recommender systems may also be beneficial to the user in specific circumstances. Building on current critical data literacies approaches, key …

Technology Criticism And Data Literacy: The Case For An Augmented Understanding Of Media Literacy, Thomas Knaus
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Reviewing the history of media literacy education might help us to identify how creating media as an approach can contribute to fostering knowledge, understanding technical issues, and to establishing a critical attitude towards technology and data. In a society where digital devices and services are omnipresent and decisions are increasingly based on data, critical analysis must penetrate beyond the “outer shell” of machines – their interfaces – through the technology itself, and the data, and algorithms, which make these devices and services function. Because technology and data constitute the basis of all communication and collaboration, media literate individuals …

Data literacy is a hot topic, which is currently discussed in many different fields from open data initiatives, statistics, computer societies, coding initiatives, and beyond. The resulting literature is inspiring but not always satisfying from the perspective of the media literacy scholarly field. The goals behind data literacy are often instrumental and utilitarian in the function of job-related skills or open data initiatives. We hope that this special issue will contribute to a broader discussion about data literacy. In this introductory essay we provide an overarching introduction, highlighting some of the main themes, questions, issues, and insights addressed in …
